  1. I suppose not...
Ever since I began playing an mmorpg... I generally play nothing else.

However, if it has the freedom to roam, wander and do whatever, the personal customization, an ongoing/perpetual chance for character development, the 24 hours per day chance to run into other players and encounter whatever spontaneous reaction occurs... Then, yeah, maybe

That being said... I like the way MrVacant said this better though, hehe
  2. One of the odd things about it, to me, is that if I would want to neg rep someone... I'm pretty sure that I would actually want to be reporting them.

    So, again, it seems pointless.
Hehe, I have given positive rep... Although, usually only when someone comments on how they got neg rep'd for a post that I thought was either great or even just unoffensive and not worthy of negative rep.

    *shrugs*

It is silly and I never think of it until someone mentions it.

  4. Heh... This is a bit silly, but, that's the point really...

An idea that just came to mind would be unlocking your transferred (And advanced) character through achievement in-game with another character.
    Similar to unlocking an EAT.

Want your old characters from CoH1?
Transfer that character and then reach Level XX with any character and your transferred character is now unlocked with the full CoH1 to CoH2 conversion advancement (CoH1 - level 1-50 = XX-XX% of CoH2 advancement).

Again, I am not saying they will do any such thing, nor even saying that they should. I just enjoy exploring the options of making such an idea (As transferring characters into an mmorpg sequel) work, without messing things up.
This method would 1) not give players a huge advantage 2) not give advanced characters to someone who has never played any of the content

You can never make everyone happy, of course. Anyways, just throwing out an idea there, hehe.

Hehe, for me, the farther away it is (Or might be), the more excited I am for it

The question remains why you'd want to make that a totally new game rather than just an extension of this game?

In other words, why would you want to go through all the trouble of solving all of the problems you just mention, and then arbitrarily make it difficult to move from CoH1 to CoH2 when you could just jump on the train and zone into it? It would be like if the devs made Going Rogue a totally separate game, and when you hit level 20 you had to character copy yourself into Paragon City.

Basically, I'm not saying what you are theorizing is impossible, nor even necessarily a bad idea. What I'm saying is that if you're going to do it, you might as well go all the way and make it an end-game expansion for CoH1 with optional autoleveling rather than a CoH2.

Of course, the market for an end-game expansion for CoH1 with autoleveling is probably significantly smaller than the market for a CoH2.
Just continuing down this purely speculative path for fun...

Oh, I don't think going all the way would be making it an end-game expansion... I think making it a brand new, very different (In some ways) game is the key.
Ports or no ports... The idea of designing a game where the starting point is a character who has the relative power of an end-game advanced character of previous games isn't lessened by being a stand alone product.

Follow me, if you will... One of the common positive remarks from new players of CoH is how much they enjoy actually having fun and varied powers from very early on.
Now, most of us may not feel this way any more... as we might feel like low levels lack the diversity of powers that we enjoy... and we might think of level 20 or level 32 or level 44 where we really feel like we've finally gotten the powers that makes us enjoy this game so much...

Still, I suppose, compared to other games... this game gives you some fun toys and some powers that make you feel good right out of the box.

Early travel powers seems to be a common praise for CoH.

Anyway... So, take that to a ridiculous extreme that I've not seen before... Where you start out strong, strong enough to shrug aside bank robbers and wade into a room and thwart a gang of very advanced criminals.

However, make the character advancement go from there... Take the enemies to greater extremes. And the characters now have to progress from Portal Corps level heroes to tackling planetary goliaths, spectacular supernova sensations, armies of hyper-advanced aliens...

I'm not saying they should do this or that I expect any such thing.
This is just a way in which a sequel could be done where it doesn't give players of the first game any advancement beyond what anyone else would get... but it also does not cut off the progression from one game to the next and previous characters to the new game.

I hate to say it, but make the sequel more along the lines (Please note that I said "more along the lines" and not 'completely adhere to the precept of') your character being a Superman level being. That doesn;t have to mean they're invulnerable and all that super jazz. It just means the concepts would be geared towards that high of a level adventure (Buckaroo Banzai might be able to defeat any enemy that Superman could have... but he is no Superman, and player's characters would not need to be the man of steel in order to fit in).
Anyways... I think I put more disclaimers in there than actual content, hehe.

One other thing. What you said about zoning from one to the other...

My thinking is that a sequel will be way, far and away, more of an advanced and completely different engine and experience than the predecessor.

If a sequel was going to be Mega-Ultramode Graphics with a few code improvements... I'd rather see them just overhaul the existing game... even if it is a new engine, and slap a virtually new game under the same name.

If they were to do a true sequel... I'd hope for such a drastic change in the engine and all...
Zoning from one to the other would be akin to zoning from Pong to Wii Tennis (I can't be bothered to come up with a different example, hehe. I know that you know what I mean)

Personally, I hope for all the spirit that this game has, combined with the best that modern engines can accomplish and then some through their great innovation.

Take our wonderful rag doll physics into the stratosphere and bring along breakaway walls tons of ridiculously entertaining interactive comicbook mayhem.

And... I will not be looking forward to this game for some time to come.

However, I enjoy dreaming. I always enjoy dreaming, hehe.

I don't think getting a jump start should be considered in the same vein as transferring powerful characters from one game to the other. Both City of Heroes and City of Villains had a couple of days of head start. But you still started from scratch. Allowing people to transfer CoH1 characters into CoH2 would be like allowing people to keep beta characters into launch. I don't know of any MMO that allowed that to happen. The beta wipe is, I think, the ultimate expression of the principle that at launch everyone starts the same, and it appears to be (small pre-order perks aside) an absolute of MMO launch philosophy.
Not that I disagree with what you are saying, nor with the probabilities and all that (Which, I do say in my ramble farther up)...
But, things can be different. Clever people come up with new and interesting ways that don't follow what has happened before.

That being said... I certainly don't expect that sort of leap in this regard. I just don't like ruling out the absurd ^ ^

Still... an interesting (And complicated) approach would be what I touched on earlier...
Making a new game where the character starts on a level seemingly as (Or nearly) as powerful as what CoH offers around 50.

No small feat... And lots of irregularities to work out (Difficult learning curve the more options you have at start... huge task of creating a system that starts where most games end), people would say it is crazy... doesn't mean it couldn't work... And I happen to love a major challenge, which such a design could be.

Anyway... In my opinion, the most likely approach would be a major cataclysm in the CoH universe... or some sort of scenario that offers reasoning for a "restart".
The Coming Storm? Jonas Brother invader alien clones?
Perhaps a slight jump in the future... or an alternate timeline...

Maybe they'll bring in Joe Quesada and make it Ultimate City Of Heroes
We can all make our characters as squeaky youngsters...

I hope for a World or Galaxy of Heroes, though
I rambled in another post a while ago about my hopes of a sequel... Hopefully some of that pie isn't too high.

Should be fun in a few years.
Maybe some of you have time to get training and join the team for it. It should be a while

    EDIT:

And again... As was said earlier in this thread... (Not that I am saying they WOULD nor SHOULD port characters over)... The games do not need to be similar in order to port pre-existing characters over.
  12. Thanks for the information, Dr. Aeon.

We (Well, most of us) know everyone over there cares a great deal and must have been working things out. It's good to let everyone know though, no question.

I'm sure you all know the problems that this change has caused and there has been some great feedback and test documentations about it on the forums.

So, I wish you a speedy solution and much happiness for everyone (Except the exploiters).

I have to say... the negative affect on the rest of the legitimate AE content was harsh this time 'round.

I do love and appreciate the AE for non-xp concerns, but, just as the Team wishes for also, many of us love it for the alternate means to progress at a pace consistent with the rest of the game (not exploiting, but not gimped).

    A tricky balance, no question.

    Best of luck!

Or... should I say... FOR SCIENCE!
  13. Since it keeps on coming up...
A quick search found this definition that pertains specifically to online gaming:

An exploit, in online games, is the use of a bug or design flaw by a player to their advantage in a manner not intended by the game's designers.

Now, based on the latest change that the Developers made... I think it is safe to say that the way some players were using the AE to create buffbot allies was not an intended game design of the developers.
Hence, we can intelligently surmise that they considered this a design flaw that worked against their intentions and thus... it could be referred to as an exploit.

Words/labels/names don't matter to me. The ease and reward of the offense was clear. The Developers' changes (regardless of the poor implementation) make their opinions clear. Continued debate about defining this instance and questioning knowledge of the Developers' definitions are beyond redundant.

What is in a name? That which we gain far too easily and without risk, by any other name, would be just as lame.

Hehe This is true (Although, the story arcs are, of course, worse off for xp/rewards, which I'm sure is what they meant).

Still, I am very happy and thankful that we simply have the ability to create our own scenarios in this game.
Even if we didn't gain any rewards, it is a sweet thing.
I'd love for the rewards to be equal, but... oh well, it is a very very tricky balance for the Devs. This I do understand.

Hopefully a better solution may come about for Allies within Battles and the like.
  15. I understand the change for multiple allies.
    However...

So it's counting every NPC you place or spawn with Ally faction. Just FYI.
If what Venture says here is correct, that does not sound good to me.

Including battles and patrols in this change hurts potential story telling as an alternative way to gain rewards a good deal.

It guts our options more than I'd like to see.

I have to ask, is this working as intended? Battles and Patrols count in this ally change?

I suppose it could be a preemptive move. After multiple buffbot allies were taken away, those mission creators might turn to custom friendly patrols and/or battles? (That seems to clunky to me for a good farming exploit, but I don't know)

    Damn life-ist bastages!
Another case of the living trying to keep the dead under wraps!

Sure... Villains can get away with it... But the goody-two-shoes don't want to make a ghost a public figure... Boo, I say boooooo!
*Umm... That "boo"-ing is not in the context of the common life-ist terminology of poorly imitating/mocking a ghost (How demeaning)... Just simply intended as the jeering sense of "boo" *nods*.

  17. I think, "Hmm... No double brackets..."

That aside... I'd send a tell, "((Hi! Do you still have room for a level XX X?))"

To me, a Level 50 only would (Or should) specify the "only" part.
Of course, most people do not communicate quite so well, so you never know intentions...
And it never hurts to ask... Well, it can, actually... but it is generally the only way to obtain some sort of psychotic approximation of what another being potentially had within their crazy brains...

As far as ITFs and level 50s are concerned...

    Two things...
    1) It's been suggested to me by a number of people to avoid any ITF that is not being run at level 50 (With some actual level 50s on the team)
    2) So long as there are a couple of level 50s on the team... a number of SKd 35s and up should be okay (The higher the better, but we should be good to go without much of a problem)

A 3rd thing... It really isn't that difficult to type (nor read) longer messages.
Don't be afraid to type, people!! It's okay! It does not make you lame to actually type out real sentences and also to actually expend some effort communicating with others!

    imnsho

  18. Like others have said... it takes years... so... that's the first part we need to keep in mind...

However, on to the subject of transferring/porting over existing characters...

It doesn't matter if the game is entirely different, it is still possible to grant an approximation of a player's/character's previous achievements.
The simplest form of which would be starting the CoH1 character off in CoH2 as advanced: Some percentage based system of advancement... how far along the scale of progression they are [CoH- level 1-50 = CoH2 advancement 0-100%]. Choosing powers/powersets/whatever the options would be... would just be open to the player to choose (Your blaster could now be an axe wielder, if you were to so choose).

    Now...

    All that being said...
It seems unlikely they'd want to allow a player to have completed advancement without playing (a single bit of) the new content.

    That being said...
This team has always been pretty spiffy and loves the playerbase so much... Who knows what they might come up with.

As for myself... Its seems like a great move to make the CoH1 playerbase feel as though they are porting from one game to the next. Otherwise, as was said earlier, they could end up with a split population between the two games... and that could hurt the new title (Might not, but it could).
However, to what degree you allow players to have advanced within a brand new game... that's a tough tough call. Allowing grandfathering and initial advancement could turn off new/potential players.

Best idea could be... starting the new game on a level of power that matches CoH1 level 50.

What if CoH2 were more like World of Heroes... Or Universe of Heroes? (Galaxy of Heroes!)

A lowest level character is more like a level 50 CoH character...
And advancement puts people more on par with cosmic forces.

Of course... that too has problems... (Never mind the monumental development/design obstacles [although, could be totally worth it and immense]) as many people certainly enjoy playing a far-less-than-cosmic-level character.
It'd still be possible to accomplish this and include smaller/street-level heroes/criminals... But yeah... It'd be a bit tougher. Still, that could be the way to go, hehe.
    Okay.. get working on that...
    Level 1... Is level 50!!
    Go!!!!!

Honestly... a sequel is a favorable eventuality...
It is either... a sequel one day...
    Or a dead CoH.

With this team and the great run this game has had so far (And should continue for some time now)... I'd be happy to see them continue.

Let's hope we get a full virtual-reality/holodech version soon!

See, I understand this, but there are a few more things about this that bother me...
We will have player-controlled Villains in Paragon City and Heroes in the Rogue Islands as Rogues and Vigilantes will still be seen more as one or the other, no matter what zone they are in. I mean, we do already have that as it is. When Captain Death-Maker is spamming in Atlas Park about how big and bad he is in the Rogue Isles, we can't do anything about it.
I do understand the difference of seeing Villains attacking Longbow in Atlas Park and not being able to fight, though.

If these missions I suggest had timers and/or ambushes, it could alleviate the potential trouble of seeing villains and not being able to attack them. Everything does have the potential to be another can of worms, though.
However, that also shouldn't preclude good ideas from taking form.

Also, Police Drones and the like would keep things more controlled (And much more dangerous) than we might fear. (Plus other clever safeguards and such to help, if they implemented any such ideas)

    Speaking of which...

It would definitely have to include an "Auto Decline" Option (And maybe default as "auto decline" until someone goes in and changes their settings to allow the option).

Is Paragon City the "city of heroes" or a city of villains and chaos?
With all of the villains and bad stuff every single half a block in the city... I think allowing mutually agreed upon duels could be great.

Of course, I know there are some who despise PvP so much that they don't even want to see it.

Anyways... I am no campaigning for any of this... Just sharing some thoughts as I wait for some compiling to finish...

  21. Yeah, I don't think they will be releasing GR with True Heroes and True Villains visiting the opposite zones... I just think it could be cool and hopefully a possibility for the future (Although, we could be wrong and there is planned content for such a thing... I do doubt it though!).

The four new zones cap at 20, and as side switching can't start until 20+, so I think it would seem to make more sense to add however much 20-50 side switching content there is into the current zones that would match the levels, rather than sending players to run around zones capped at 20.
Oh I agree... When I said about the Trues being able to visit new zones, I just meant "new" to them... being the opposite side (Red/Blue).

And, again... not freely traveling back and forth or anything... Just some set content for such a fun thing. *shrugs*

I just don't see a reason to be completely closed off about that, so I am curious if they do (Or if anyone else does).
  22. GG, a simple INF bonus is a good possibility. Makes sense, for certain.

Something I was realizing... I am hoping (If not upon release, later on) for Blueside Content on the Isles and Redside Content in Paragon City.
And not just on mission maps.

Rather, True Blues and True Reds getting missions that require them to actually travel to the opposing side.

We know Vigilantes and Rogues can cross back and forth...
And they play both sides a little bit (How much content there is for them on both sides is uncertain)...

But it would be nice to see True Heroes and Villains capable of visiting the other side for some action that is purely in line with their moral compass.

Ever since I began playing this game... I wanted to do villainous things in the nice clean Paragon City... And I wanted to help defend the innocent in the Rogue Isles (There are some!).

So, anyways... This would not be cheating the idea that True Heroes/Villains would be cut off from what Rogues/Vigilantes and Side-Switchers get to do... It would just allow for them to experience some of the other zones through arcs, events, certain game mechanics/accomplishments... whatever they design.

    *shrugs*

I have no idea if they plan any such thing nor if they would be for or against it.

I just realized this was something I was hoping for, in the back of my mind.

I was referring to the specifics of the playerbase's lists and such.
Yes, WW is great and hands on with this game. I'm not saying a single negative thing in any regard about her, nor am I suggesting she wouldn't know about how to make bases better... Just was speaking directly about what everyone before me was talking about... The multiple stickied threads of suggestions.

Re-doing lists and suggestion threads is just a matter of cleaning things up over the course of time.
When a thread is started, it might be a concise list... As the time goes by, pages are added with some great additions, some possibly not-so-feasible suggestions and everything beyond and in-between. Changes are implemented to the game as well.

The stacks of papers on the desk rise, and sometimes they need to be resorted, fixed up.

I'm not going to stress and push the idea... I, honestly, have not recently looked over the multiple stickied threads we have here that people were suggesting the team should use instead of asking for suggestions now... So, for all I know, they are perfectly fine, easy and quick presentations for them to digest. If that's the case, just direct them to the threads and... then we wait, hehe

And, since I am not likely to be a big part in any repackaging effort... I will leave my suggestion as it was and see what happens. If I have the time and feel so inclined, we'll see... But... yeah, that possibility in the near future doesn't seem too likely for me.

I just tend to prefer to take whatever action I can in order to accomplish things I care about.
When all is said and done... if things didn't work out the way I had wished, at least I know I did what I could.

And... none of this is negative/personal nor am I attempting to preach upon anyone at all

I think we all have a common desire and love here and that is great

  25. No one can be aware of all things and all that jazz... As lead designer, WW has to keep herself aware, but how much detail is realistic?
    Regardless...
We, as a community, must consolidate the information, issues, suggestions and lists and present them to her/the team.

I'm sure WW or others on the staff are well aware of the stickied threads and all...
But, when I see the Devs (And WW, no less) publicly making it known she/they are interested in hearing suggestions, it means it is time to take everything we have, consolidate it and make a nice new shiny packaged presentation for quick and easy consumption.

Turbo, forgive me for being uncertain about your (terrific) news... it was posted on April 1st, hehehe.
Truly, if that is mere coincidence, yay and congratulations! (And good luck! Let's all pitch in and make sure we have a clear and concise presentation of ideas and desires!)
