Oh... And I suspected it could possibly by some terrorist act and contacted Homeland Security...
They thanked me very graciously and launched a thorough investigation.
After dealing with them for a few hours, I thought maybe I was just banned for some reason (Likely Dec mis-quoted me and got me into trouble), so I looked at all of the last post time-stamps and realized that it wasn't just me... And updated Homeland Security with that juicy bit of info.
I sent paper messages attached via carrier-pigeon to Samuel Tow and kept getting winked at by some blonde lady outside my window.
All-in-all it was a very productive day.
I wonder if they caught the people responsible yet... -

And yes, David and Jesse are so cute on camera - it's that earnest sincerity, I think... they don't come across as jaded, which helps a lot.

I'm switching it up to "raising the bar." Other options are "upping our game", "bringin' it old school", and "kick **** and take names".
After that, my catch-phrase is up for grabs.

Quote:Yeah, I don't see it as a designed method of punishment/loss. I think it is just a (sort of) happy happenstance of how things will work (Not unintentional, just... it's not supposed to make you go, "Ohhhh, no, I don't want that!"... I get the feeling it is just, "Hey, they are separate and if you switch with some in store, you lose 'em".This isn't a complaint, but there's nothing in that system that says that someone who wanted to not lose their earned H/VMs wouldn't just spend them and then set about switching. I mean, yeah, you could lose them, but I'm not real sure why anyone would, at least not short of a serious dedication to roleplay. (That or a lack of interest in actually spending H/VMs at all).
So, the only negative about going vigilante/rogue is not being able to access this stuff (The Fort/Crucible and whatever goes on there).
Maybe there will be more that a "true" Hero/Villain can accomplish that a Rogue/Vigilante cannot (Some bonuses... or maybe a dayjob type bonus from the Fort/Crucible).
That's just idle speculation/thinking on my part though.
Quote:Any possibility of renaming them before they go live? There are all ready too many types of merits in the game and this new type merit will be easy to confuse with the existing ones.
Could you please call them something like Triumphs, Talents, Glories, Tributes, Statures, Virtues, Kudos, Laurels, Stocks, Bonds, Wampum, etc.....
Something other than merits, anything other than merits...... please.
I'd suggest to stop thinking of reward merits as "merits" and think of them as Reward, Vanguard, Hero and Villain Merits. (Hrm, VM is repeated... RM, HM... Vam and Vim?) -
Quote:Haha, an excellent question/point.Is that because of you though, or because of the general idiocy of other people?
I honestly don't think it makes much difference in most cases even if you tell people. A surprising number of folks like to be fooled.
Being that it is in the realm of art and entertainment, I'm going to say it is because of me... but I may be trying to foll ya!
In most cases though, yeah, tons of people skate by without knowing (nor caring) about what they do, hehe. And, in most cases, people generally don't care (Until it it hits them upside the head, after the fact... all your faulty appliances, poorly made stuff, lousy service, ruined entertainment industries... etc), hehehe.
Anyways... I am going to stop derailing things... didn't mean to! -
Quote:Excellent. Thank you, Ghost Falcon! I like the way that works. Some people have long seen their heroes as villains or villains as heroes and, with this system, they can make that switch and attain the rewards of staying "true".We're keeping it simple. Heroes that travel through the alignment system and become Villains can reaffirm their Villain alignment and gain Villain merits. If that same Villain travels on the path of redemption back to a "hero", then they will be able to re-affirm their alignment as a Hero and earn Hero merits. Being a "true" Hero or a "true" Villain will always grant access to Fort Trident (Heroes) and the Crucible (Villains).
The only penalty is that if you have any Hero or Villain Merits, and then change your alignment to Vigilante or Rogue, your fallen Hero or road to redemption Villain will lose their earned Hero and Villain Merits. (To reiterate, these are rewards for "true" Heroes and Villains.)
So, when Ghost Falcon is saying "true" hero/villain, he's saying not a Vigilante/Rogue (As opposed to the idea that a "true" hero/villain would be one that has never switched sides).
I like how the negative could be that you lose your saved up hero/villain merits. Makes sense. -
Yes, I am liking this idea a lot.
I sort of wish (Or still hope) that the style of the place could meld with the idea of adding a coffee shop or diner for characters to hang out int, hehe.
(That's okay, we can get our diner in addition to this, right, right?)
Hehe, thank you very much for posting that, Ghost Falcon! -
Hehe, eh, I make my living by pretending that I know what I'm doing
It can work surprisingly well.
And sure... I've figured out a fair amount along the way, but still... Shhhhh. -

I can only read so much adoring praise and complimentary commentary about myself before... Ah, actually... it never gets old!
Sure, I would love to read all the ways people have detailed how much they love me!!

Quote:Yep! In case it wasn't clear, part of my point is that I very much consider this medium art. I don't think it is deniable, really (Well, not logically, hehe). And perhaps it is worth pointing out:
Any good programmer will tell you that there is art to code, as well as functionality. Even without any reference to the actual output, without any maps, without any zones, code can be beautiful and art in its own right.
It's like any other work in language. You can write in English, but not all writing in English is art. You can write in C, but not all writing in C is art.
Then again... I consider life to be art, so... don't look at me. Or... please do!
*runs away* -
Quote:Ooh, I didn't intend for my reply to be read as though it was countering interest in the inner workings and whatnot (Not my intention at all!).Art wouldn't be possible without craftsmanship and technique. Developing an MMO without software engineering, coding, QA, etc. is no more possible than, say, playing a musical instrument with no idea of how it works.
Sure, there's much more to any computer game (or any program for that matter) than these craftlike aspects, but... No code, no game, no artistic value.
Whether or not someone finds such a low-level shop-talk interesting is another matter. Those who either work or worked in software business naturally tend to be ones most interested. But we aren't ignoring artistic aspect. We just want to learn how and why it's done the way it's done.
Yeah, craftsmanship is something I value highly and I love learning about the hows, whats and whys.
That reply of mine was aimed squarely at the notion of people suggesting something was not done right. And I was totally agreeing that nothing is ever done "right", but if it succeeds, it is right.
I was just echoing what was said and applying my angle of how I don't like how people insult art that they don't like. If they don't like it, and have decided that much, it doesn't mean that the artist failed.
A person could create and perform a wonderful piece of music and singing with just an acoustic guitar. That artist decides that song should remain that way and that's how they record it and whatnot.
Someone else can not like it and say it needs more bass and more instruments and a female voice and, etc etc.
(And, as far as I am concerned, they can go *** off unless they can create their own works and/or honor the original musician by recording it their own way, if they like)
Hehe, I can see how my initial reply may have come off differently (That's what happens when I don't ramble on forever to cover all ground... but I try and keep my posts shorter than they would be otherwise).

Hmmm... This is all I know of so far. I don't think there is any further info on it yet.
No place or time or date set, as far as I know.
Just in October during NYCC (October 8-10).
Haha, and that quoted comment looks silly with that smiley! -
Quote:Mhmm, and somewhat along those lines...Well, the sad truth abouyt software engineering is...
http://stevemcconnell.com/ieeesoftware/eic10.htm
Tl;DR version: If it works and employees are happy, the methodology is right, no matter what exactly it is.
If on the other hand, your product is best described by four-letter words and the staff looks like characters from Dilbert, you're in trouble, even if you're using what appears to be a modern methodology that successful companies use.
I prefer to consider stuff like this the work done by artists.
Recognize it for what it is and either enjoy your appreciation or forget about it.
"It should be..." "It could be..." "I would..." can all go kiss my ****, as it doesn't have to be anything other than what they wanted it to be. Fortunately, they love the communal aspect of this particular brand of art (Not all mmorpg developers embrace that quite so much... I want name SOmE of those other companies though...) and that translates to the fans/audience/customers feeling more of a part of the art/entertainment.
The truth still is... that it is theirs and we can either enjoy it or find our enjoyment elsewhere. Enough people are enjoying this one now that they feel comfortable continuing to work on it and provide it. -

Quote:HAHA!...
As to the subject of the thread, it's been my experience that 99% of the people on the internet who use nothing but their claimed expertise as 'proof' of what is solely opinion are lying about their credentials. And my statistics are always correct because I work for a statistics gathering company and know lots of statisticians.
Quote:I think the Devs are playing it "safe" with GR and have been playing it "safe" for the past several issues.
I expect them to continue to play it "safe" however much I disagree with the approach. I'm still subing and will probably continue to subscribe up untill November or October.
I tend to look at GR with sobering skepticism, for my own sake I hope I enjoy it. For now i'm enjoying my fox-tails and mutant booster. d;D
synopsis: Are they doing it wrong? Probably not. Have they been avoiding taking risks? most definitely. I really feel now is the time to take a few risks however.
Mission Architect and Power Customization were a few issues ago, but were very far from playing it safe.
The only "playing it safe" I can fathom is how they've been focusing on GR more than breaking ground in any of the free (yes, I said it) issues.
Quote:Is it really that much better to say "the updates are included at no extra charge with your monthly subscription"? Yes, technically, they're not "free", but they're not "extra" either.
Are we really having this conversation?
Quote:I'm not a dev apologist, but our devs are awesome, and I'm sorry for anyone who can't handle that.
I play a game that I enjoy. I don't rely on future updates nor what is to come (Or hope for), because I like what I've got. Plain and simple. As for Paragon Studios, I think they're a great bunch and find them to be one of those excellent examples of great work and down-to-earth personalities, with care and excitement for what they have.
It's a pretty cool thing and I'm glad I'm here and enjoy this game, because the whole scenario is pretty nice and fun to be around.

Rockin' Robin...
Thanks for the updates, even if you got zero information!
Your investigation skills need improving, tweety bird! It wuth, it wuth a puddy tat!
Ummm... Did everyone have tons of fun???
I'm looking forward to seeing them again at the NYCC Meet&Greet.
And I shall pry information out of them that shall make Marcian blush!!
And... really... why were your tweets not all in alliteration, hmmmm?

Just curious... Does anyone have their in-game email set up to receive emails from anybody, not hide from searches and not get spam email any more?
Putting myself on Hiding From Searches pretty much eliminated the spam emails. I like leaving my email open and have no intentions of closing it to just global friends or SG or anything.
But... If the RMT emails are over, I may give turning off hiding from searches a try again.
I never had any problem with tells or invites or anything. -
Quote:*sigh*Opinions are neither right, nor wrong! Their opinions, not statements of fact. Look it up in a dictionary if you don't believe me!
Yes, and, as I said, stating that it is just your opinion does not change it being wrong.
It is my opinion that the world is triangle-shaped and that your name is Ralph!!
-
Haha, Bull Throttle, people are nuts!
Hopefully I balanced ya out there.
Also, I just realized that I know two people who have never posted on the forums (Probably have never signed in) that are always hiding from searches.
Not suggesting to add that in. It just struck me as I was thinking on this topic.
I just don't think that players who remain off of the forums are naturally going to prove any which way on this subject.
The difference in percentage could be + or -
