    That is awesome, Deebs!

Everything is great with that piece though. The line work, the action, the poses, the textures and the color.
    Very cool! Nice work!

And... it was nearly forever ago and I said I was going to post my hackjob coloring of Zox's headshot... I thought I was going to do it up better, so I delayed... And here it is and I've never redone it, so here is my original color job on your headshot of my Zox'Oculox!
Thanks again, Deebs!! Love your style!!

  5. Well explained, Stone Daemon.

And I was thinking (I'm sure some have already thought of this, but here goes) some of you who have had to change may want to make a chat bind for your global channels that includes something like "(formerly @oldname)" and keep that running for a month of two.
So, every time you type in there, it says "@newname (formerly @oldname) I love Electric-Knight. He is so spiffy!!".
That could go a long way to solving that side of things.

I'm not 100% positive on the correct commands for this...
    A close approximation would be:

    /bind DESIRED-KEY startchat "/send DESIRED-GLOBAL-CHANNEL-NAME (formerly @youroldglobalname) "

I'm not sure if the quotes need to be there... and I am not sure if it should be startchat or beginchat.
  6. Agreed and understood, Maniac Raid!

And, just to clarify, the reason I used the word "intentionally" is because it is true and is the prime difference. I know that aspect was not the focus of what they were doing and was an unfortunate side-effect. More work could have put in to avoid that, but it was not feasible (and I understand and respect that, but it still makes it an intentional choice).
Yes, there were benefits (for some). To be fair, not everyone who had their names changed wants those benefits, nor even sees them as benefits.

Regardless, I absolutely wanted to see the two versions combined and think that, overall, it is worth the costs.
And, as I said, I just hope maybe some of the inactive account stuff can be sorted out, because some people are not going to come back and it'd be nice to find a way to take care of the existing customers over the ones who aren't paying any more.

But I, personally, have yet to hear anyone, at all, complain about the participation system on Live.
In all honesty, while I am not saying that getting jipped on Threads Only happens the majority of the time, when people do get the Threads Only Table, they're not always going to announce it.
That's part of the problem. It (often incorrectly) speaks to that player having not contributed sufficiently and/or as though their playing is inadequate and/or unworthy of proper rewards.
Even if they know better, Maybe it was that time I died twice in a row or any such thing and announcing it could possibly paint them as no better than a door-sitter, leach and/or an incompetent player that no one wants to carry around for the trials.

Obviously not everyone is so self conscious about such things...
I've only gotten the Threads Table twice, myself. I didn't announce it to the Lleague either time (Honestly, I don't like to complain about things in-game anyway. We're all there to have fun. Me griping about anything isn't what others want to hear, hehe... Not that I've had much to complain about).
Once because of a disconnect and another time because of the failure of the League to adequately protect the sole blaster combined with my own failure to recognize that was going to be the case, adapt, use Lucks and not worry about achieving whatever hidden metrics were being used to judge my playing (see, I kept going full force, despite the lack of aggro management being provided, because I didn't want to not get the full reward... and that ended in my blaster face-planting far more than I usually would [although, not that much for the blasters that tend to use the cred "If you're not face-planting, you're not trying hard enough"]).

Seriously though... unless every single member of the league announces their reward each and every time, no announcement of a Thread-Only Table reward doesn't mean no one was getting them.

Yes, so long as the counter argument is to trivialize the fact that many people are experiencing this issue.

I think the Participation System should remain, but based on collected data it should be adjusted as needed.
That is assuming that the system is capable of any such adjustments.
How long has it been so far and the first passes of adjustments have not fixed some of the most obvious cases (not saying it is easy to fix, of course, nonetheless... the problem has been there since day one and has remained. That = unfun for those regularly dealing with it).

    I like this.

In all seriousness (well, as much seriousness as I can muster), I do understand people's issues with this and I do not like that they automatically lost them to inactive accounts. I think that sucks and there's nuffink that can be said to change my mind about that.

And this is a bit different than accidentally spilling coffee on someone, hehe.
They intentionally made some changes that removed aspects of their online gaming that they'd had for several years.
No... not a big deal in the grand scope of things... But an affront within the scope of this being a video game and fun happy pastime stuff.

I wish that badgers and such didn't lord over such options as to give out such gifts for odd circumstances as this.
THAT seems so silly to me.
Not that a badge actually makes up for anything... it's just the gesture that counts.

Still... maybe some time can be spent on sorting through the inactive accounts and some names can be freed up in the future as we move along.

Until then... I shall change my global name in honor of our EU brethren.

    Suggestions are welcome!

  11. As for a participation system that does result in improved chances for better rewards within the component table... If such a system exists and they wish to have such a system... Let it be based on the overall League.
The entire League gets the same weighted rolls, but each member gets their own individual roll, so some will get luckier than others from roll to roll.

Just make it clear that it is not about individual competition and make it a League-Wide metric.

Coming out of the box with the oversights and problems that the participation system has come out with is just terrible, in my opinion (within the realm of importance of a video game).
The worst part about it is that I think that the Incarnate Trials were done very well and are a lot of fun!
The only knocks against it are the participation system, too few (you have to start somewhere and more will be coming), lag problems for some users (which, unfortunately is almost inevitable with new game systems and such... Easy for me to say as someone who hasn't had any severe problems, of course).

Take that participation system out back...
  12. So, VoodooGirl /unsigned.
    Let her disagree, lol.

If participation is truly required... then no trial should be successful without the members of the league participating... so, no metric should be needed other than success or failure.
    No further system is needed.

People have gotten wacky results in extreme tests and no one is entirely sure what is going on with it.
And, quite frankly, I agree 100% with Tech's assessment that all of the potential problems can be policed by the social tools already available.

As for the potential doorsitters of uber friends for max grinding value on multiple accounts...
First off, if the trial can be done so easily, perhaps that should be fixed...
Secondly, so what? The rewards cannot be traded. If people want to get wherever without the "effort" and they have the friends that can carry them on their backs, big deal.
The only problem that creates is a vastly more powerful toon for farming in the normal content.
However, these characters are going to get there eventually anyway. Any Farmer worth their salt is completely capable of going through the trials, participating and pumping out whatever rewards they want.

Some system that "punishes" legitimate players due to oversights in a convoluted metric is a worse option than having more farmers of incarnate status more quickly than we might have otherwise.

I don't see any need for the participation system.

One important note: none of this has to do with your rewards of Commons-Very Rares. It is only about whether you got the Threads Table or any of the Components Table.

To my eyes, it makes no sense to start a hero as a villain just because I want his meta-game AT on the hero-side, even though the character's concept does not include any of that.

And I can live with this being Going Rogue exclusive.
Agreed. And it definitely would have to be a part of Going Rogue.

Yeah, when it was discovered that Going Rogue wouldn't allow for such a thing right off the bat, I was a bit surprised (a bit, not entirely) and have never liked it.

As Sam said, later on in a different reply (and I agree entirely), if people need to be strong-armed into starting into Praetoria... then that is not a good thing at all.
I am not convinced that people need to be strong-armed into there anyway.

    Anyway... What Sam said.
  14. I don't think there's a point in entering this topic of discussion... but there's not much point in anything anyway, so here goes...

One mistake people make when talking about porting/transferring of characters from an original game to a sequel is that it would translate to a level capped character in the new game.

I'm not saying I am all for any such thing, nor am I going to get into specifics of how it could work, but just a very quick example would be something similar to the Incarnate System.
Imagine a game that started with just about as much starting power as a level 50 character in CoH, but then had a full (and even more expanded) Incarnate System.
No, a direct copy of such things wouldn't be good enough, but I'm just talking about similarities.
Obviously there's much more that needs to be done and such in order to take on such a different approach to a game, but people talking about such things as impossibilities and absolute terms are a bit silly.
There are ways it could be done.
Whether or not it should be done comes down to how well it is done and not any absolute rules.

As for sequels and new mmorpgs in general... Arcanaville listed most of my thoughts about the nearly impossible task of delivering a new game with enough content and value for players to switch over to.

The very first live action Wonder Woman that finally managed to get made was the very cheesy Cathy Lee Crosby version in 1974. Despite that being a horrible version of the character it directly generated enough interest in the idea to finally get us the Lynda Carter Wonder Woman shows of 1975-79.

I contend that even though Cathy Lee Crosby's Wonder Woman was horrible it served a valuable purpose at the time to lead to something better. I feel that even if this 2011 David Kelley show had turned out to be horrible it would have at least primed the pump again to have a better chance to get a GOOD Wonder Woman show made in the relative near future. With the news that this series was easily discarded before it got a real chance I figure our collective chances for a good show in the next 5 to 10 years is now virtually nil. *shrugs*
I understand and agree with the idea, as I've seen you say this in previous discussions about this stuff.
I wonder... Things are certainly different, in regards to media coverage/tv/internet/entertainment... Perhaps just having this happen and whatever buzz may take place (or already taken place) could possibly result in the same display of interest to give value to another WW project as the original Cathy Lee WW did back then.
Perhaps internet buzz and the ability to see/read/hear the interest of potential viewers could be the type of influential thing to help make a WW happen, despite this setback.
I know there's always been an internet buzz about potential WW projects, but this is a near miss and focused/concentrated collection of feedback. The suits like them sorts of things, especially when showed ot them in pretty colored charts and stuff.

In today's day and age... a terrible show could possibly kill the brand name's chance. Have we seen any tv shows air, get canceled and then have someone else bring the same trademark to someone else to reinvent a different take on the same IP?

Hopeful thinking maybe... But it makes some sense to me. Not that it'll surely happen... just that what was true back then may not hold true today.
Through the world-wide accessible interactive media we have today, this may have created a larger buzz and generated more feedback than any canceled tv show in the 70s. And, in today's market, a TM'd character may not be coveted after it already aired and failed.

Union (nor any of the other newly available servers to each and everyone) is not a new server to jump to and create a new land in my own name!

It is a long-existing server and home to many happy players and one in which visitors and potential settlers would do well to politely learn the culture and observe and take note of the community in order to possibly eventually become a solid part of it themselves.

Just my opinions as a Virtue-ite who has long wished to visit Union and get a feel for how things were over there and eventually take part in the fun.

    Good luck!

Basically, this is the reason I think Account Names should have been handled the way things were... but (ideally) Global names should have been handled based on loyalty/veteran status/active account type stuff.

Anyone currently not-in-the-know would be pretty messed up trying to log into their account, should they come back and its name has been changed.
However, having the global name changed wouldn't cause any problems (other than the potential of hurt feelings, but they've already reactivated by then, and it's their own fault if they can't accept the fact that a payer customer got preferential treatment... as rotten as many people can be, the amount of people who would truly be incensed over that is very small).

So... limiting instances of confusion about out-of-game login/account information = good/smart thing.
However... basing in-game global information on catering to the inactive customers over currently paying and/or more loyal/longer-veteran-status customers = pointless gesture

All that being said, I think it was mostly for ease and straightforward functionality, which I do respect.
None of it is easy and they just wanted to pound it out.
I just think that, beyond this instance, inactive accounts should have names opened up after a certain amount of time. I've always felt that way... and now, with this instance of global name conflicts, I think it should have extended to that.

Just my opinions and it took no work from me, so take that for what it's worth, hehe!
  19. As for replacing the existing game's engine...
That really means replacing the current game with a new one.
As much as any artist might try to replicate, duplicate, copy everything over... if you're doing it differently, it's going to be different.
I wouldn't ever want to see the game swapped for a new one... and, in reality, an engine replacement would be just that.
There's no chassis that can be opened up and the parts swapped out for new, improved ones that can handle all the wear and tear and new super-awesome ideas that the old ones couldn't.

It's not like swapping the same brain into a new and better body.
It's a bit more like swapping the old brain out for a new one.
It'd take an awful lot of work to get that new brain to contain and understand all the cool stuff of the first brain... and it still wouldn't ever be the same person.

    Bilik'kala'zunkar.

I don't know if it really will be a CoH sequel, related to it or something completely different (oh, speaking of which, I've had some ideas for a Monty Python mmorpg...), but it's been obvious they've been working on something for a while now... I am indeed curious, but it has little-to-no bearing in reality for me right now.

And I agree with Golden Girl... IF they make a sequel, I expect something a bit innovative in the whole tying it in with the original that would hopefully alleviate a lot of the problems some people have with mmorpg sequels.
No, not direct ports or carrying things over... but there definitely are some innovative ways to make things work well for both games.

    Iklachomtralg!!
  20. I liked the title!

And I'm just here for the free food.
Where is that free food anyway??

Hehe... In all (well, some... maybe a little) seriousness, I'm not a fan of the standard game designs. For me, it's not about the genre, as I could enjoy most (likely with a few exceptions), and this game successfully covers many genres on its own anyway... It's just that it is one of the few survivors on the market that focuses more on the fun side than on the standardized rules/mechanics/limitations.
The customization is a huge part of that, both in visuals and in power/ability choices.
Probably the major positive thing is that the ability and skill system is not based on items... and not visual items/apparel. The enhancement system is a nice invisible loot system that almost doesn't even count in my mind as a loot system (even though it is).
And that ties in very nicely with the whole visual customization and allowing the user to create their character/concept with little hindrances from the game mechanics (other than just inevitable limitations of not being an all-encompassing computer program of infinite options and capabilities).
Add to the mix a very fun and friendly mentality/vibe that permeates from the company on down through the game and into the community and you get a wonderful place to spend some fun happy play time make believe!

Also, player bases, mission architect and sidekicking allow for so much freedom and tailor-made fun.

I was never into the standard-fare mmorpgs.
I played one other one that I loved... a long time ago... in a galaxy far far away... until that was literally destroyed... for very similar reasons (minus the great company and community).
I like freedom in my games and the ability to get lost in the world of make believe.
    Cheers to CoH!

(And, after having types this out, you can see why I appreciated the title!)

    EDIT:
    OH!!!!
The animations and most especially the ragdoll physics are HUGE factors to me enjoying this game!!!
All of what I mentioned above is great, but the actual game, when I am punching, kicking, blasting, shooting, mesmerizing my enemies needs to be fun, entertaining, exciting and compelling...
And through the animations, the randomized element of each encounter potentially being unique due to positions, environment, powers, ragdoll physics and such (combined with playing a character I am invested in and enjoy from concept to appearance) makes playing the actual game (solo, small team, large team, league) super fun!!
That all is why I am here... That and the free food. Where is that again??

Which, by the way, is the one piece of coding I would give a great deal to learn how to do (in other words, how to add that functionality to a game engine).

As unique as the /demorecord feature is (and on other games' forums, when I've brought it up, machinima artists are like, "oh, hell, we'd KILL to have that in this game!"), I gather it's a PITA and a half to keep working.
