  1. DDO has been fan run for years despite still being under the Atari name. The game is still around and being updated despite having a smaller fanbase than CoX and being in a far more crowded genre market.

It costs Atari almost nothing to do this and NCSoft could do the same. The fact that they don't shows they don't want to, not that they can't.

In the grand scheme of MMO's, very few die completely unless the parent company deliberately kills it. The majority of MMO's that have been made are still out there. Finding the software to play it might be difficult but they're still out there.

So I wish the NCSoft apologists would stop talking about hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars. Those numbers aren't realistic and it's not the way the business works; never has been. NCSoft is shutting down the game because they want to, not becasue they can't keep it running.
  2. I can still remember the first time I teamed up with someone who didn't speak English well. I don't know if it was a he or she but the person spoke Japanese (which, ironically, I can now speak but I couldn't then). It was shortly after Issue 2 came out. It was clear that he was trying to ask me a question but I just couldn't make sense of it from the English he knew. We were the exact same level (low) so I just invited him to a team hoping I could figure it out. We played together for over eight hours despite not being able to communicate and, to this day, I still have absolutely no idea what he was originally trying to ask me. But I know we both had a blast.

This game was something special and I'm devastated to see it go.

I miss a lot of the old groups. The taxis were great. I also remember, the actual name eludes me, something like the Paragon Police Department. The would fly around and just buff/heal lowbies/newbies who has gotten in over their heads but would deal no damage so they didn't XP steal. They had a huge website at one point.

After playing SOE's Star Wars Galaxies for over a year it sure is refreshing to have a Development Team that actually listens to their clients.

I agree. Now imagine how good it would be if Dev posts and threads weren't derailed by ranters and off-topic posters. Oh wait, I forgot, they do it because they "love" the game.

  5. I'ver only been playing CoH for about 2 months and I'm having a blast. That said, I would much rather see time and resources devoted to balancing the current game rather than adding in epic "stuff". My first character, before I knew much about the game, was a Mind/Emp controller. Now, of course, I can see that Mind, while not unplayable, is woefully underpowered compared to the other controller primaries. Once the epic At's come out, you'll see Mind even less. The reason for this is that to get to level 50 quickly, and qualify for epic characters, players will be even more inclined to cookie-cutter builds. I stopped playing ny ind controller for two reasons. One, no one would ever invite him to a team (or would kick him once the did). Two, soloing was possible, but not very (and in any case was so slow and plodding as to be practically unworkable). Forget ever using him to get to level 50.

For the most part, I think the devs do a great job and, for the most part, I'm enjoying playing the game. But making an expansion that is dependant on acheiving a certain level requires that all At's have the opportunity to get to that level equally; and right now, that just isn't the case.

Right now, some At's are hard to team and hard to solo. And that equals "no fun". Right now, my Mind/Emp is "no fun". I'm far more concerned about that that I am about epic AT's or having fog in the game.

Kudos to the devs for making a very interesting and unique game. But there are right and wrong ways to do everything. I think making epic AT's when the basic ones are wacked out is a wrong way. IMHO. YMMV.

Oh, and just to make it easier for people to flame me:

You're all....uhm....er....oafs. Yeah, that's it. And the horse you rode in on.
