Much of what we know of Norse mythology comes from sources *after* Christianity had already established a firm foothold, so there was a lot of cross-pollination between the two. Meaning that existing Norse myth is very likely borrowing bits of Christianity and has stuff that is in direct reaction against Catholicism in particular.
That's the beautiful thing about Ragnorak and Norse Mythology... everything is destroyed and the world restarts and it just so happened that the end of ragnorak ended with a setting similar to genesis so they just said that Norse myth is a prequel... but theoretically any religion could fit that position with Norse.

It depends on what you mean.

if we're talking mainstream, which is the general populous, I'd have a few page pamphlet, if that. Most people don't believe 99% of what the canon of their religion says.

I think going off that is ludricrious. How would I or anyone possibly know what 40,000 sects believe and then know what each individual believe as individuals of sects don't believe the same thing as what is accepted as the canon of their sect.

No, instead I would much rather go off the majority representative in this case which is the catholic church which in the case of christianity. And as such Norse mythology as well as many of those other mythologies are canon and accepted by the catholic church. Whether Catholics believe that is another story.

It's kinda like if the president ordered torture... well I don't agree with it, but the majority representative does and as such i can't be mad at a person when someone says i support torture.

When Christianity was spreading rampantly (and they still do it today) the way they got so many converts, before just threatening them is by taking the mythology of the area and blending it so that whatever mythology was in the currently held beliefs of the natives would match up to christianity in some way.

Some of it entered the main stream canon while a lot of it was either forgotten as people became less connected with their religions and/or maintained as canon (officially), but kept local.

Because most people don't know the commonly known canon of their religion they hardly ever know the less known parts.

Norse Christianity is one of those occurrences where it is considered canon, but because it's local and largely not connected with by even those who would be Odinists (or whatever they'd be called) noone but people who learns random trivia knows this type of stuff for the most part.

There are a number of other well known occurrences of this and more recent as well, but their names escape my mind right now, but one is from latin america and the other is a merge of Buddhism and christianity. I could also think of some more ancient world ones, but let's not as those are more likely to hit on sensitive spots.

I certainly don't want to end up in the same boat with Jacqueline Howett:

Read down into the hilarious comments by the author. You certainly don't want sentences like this in your book:

"She carried her stocky build carefully back down the stairs."

"Don and Katy watched hypnotically Gino place more coffees out at another table with supreme balance."
    Wow... that's really sad...

both the responses she gave and the fact she thinks those are perfectly acceptable sentences... and this comes from a guy that has formed numerous sentences with very odd structure... those sentences are horrible.

i disagree with more of wat you said, but i'm just going to comment on this... Norse mythology is actually fully accepted in christian mythology. They merged a long time ago and is forgotten now, but Norse mythology according to the integrated mythology happens before genesis. They pulled that off because Ragnorak ends with the death of the gods and 2 humans under yggdrasil where as Genesis pretty much begins with a single god left (obviously there would have had to be one to tell the story of Ragnorak) and 2 humans in the garden of eden where the tree of the knowledge of good and evil was. Satan would have been created at this point after Ragnorak...

This means that Loki and Lucifer are not related... also Lucifer is not a trickster where as Loki is and is part of a much older thematic type of god. Lucifer in the mythology is noble, loyal, and a master of "half-truths" where as loki is deceptive, disloyal, and has no honor.

#1. To suggest a race that according to legend can change their gender couldn't change their skin color (which is a far simpler process) is stupid and really quite racist in premise. It could be Heimdall just liked being black at that moment in time and norse looking when they interacted with the norse.

#2. To suggest a group wouldn't change their "deities" to be more like them is naive and suggests that you are not making the connection between your problem with Jesus being portrayed as white even though we know that if he existed he wouldn't have been and the fact that just because a mythology portrays a person one way doesn't mean they are that way and more than likely they have been move more towards the culture that admires them as time passes and further from their actual being.

Kevin james is a great actor but you don't see him suiting up in blue tights trying to play Superman do you? What is that discrimination against fat people?

A Norse god is not a one size fits all role so yes skin color, physical fitness and looks in general should play a part in casting.
So... all those white guys playing Jesus... you have a problem with that?
  9. I've been thinking about this all day for some reason, but I have to ask, in our world what is the meaning or and the value of being "published"

I personally view publishing houses, comic publishers, the music industry, hollywood, and the video game industry largely built on an antiquated system that emphasizes the value of a corporation making decisions about what is and isn't good.

Why do we recognize these authorities? Why would we in our age? Why is it laughed at when someone self publishes a book. Why are web comics not held in as much esteem as regular comics? Why should we care about a music label saying something is good when the music label is only there to fund the production of a hard medium such as a cd/tape/record? We no longer need these corporations because we have the internet and as such their purpose is, more or less, completely obliterated.

Why would artists ever want to be associated with these corporations? They take a majority of the money that is gained by the popularity of the artists and provide no service that the artists couldn't do on their own.

And in those mediums where the money is the big factor (due to hiring people or some such thing)...has having that much money to throw around helped to make great art/product? Or has it in truth harmed it?

So again why do we scoff at self published and laugh at the idea of indy development as not as good as big companies...
  10. Sadly the cast of Smallville has been the best actors to fit their roles yet had to deal with being in a not-so-much version of the universe. Seriously, let the actors play the roles in a high budget movie and fire the crap writers...

I saw the movie back on Monday and loved every moment of it.
that was a failed attempt at a 3rd act ^.^

And yes it ended abruptly with the zooming in on earth peoples and then just going to credits... It seemed like there should have been more after that point and there wasn't

not a movie... they said they would try to pursue continueing the series in another way and given that there was a commercial during the air saying "this is only the beginning" I would think they are likely going to look into a web based series.

When The Event came back from hiatus the writers had changed all the things people had hated about the show.

They got rid of the annoying flashbacks, explained what Sophia’s people were & gave them a purpose for being here & most importantly the writers drastically ramped up the action for the show.

I wonder why it took the writers so long to fix what was wrong with the show; this feels like déjà vu, it was the same thing that happened with SGU.
The Event was planned to work that way from the beginning.

The first part of the season was all exposition and that is the method they were using to give to the audience. The second part they were never going to have all the flashbacks and was always going to be straight forward.

The Event looked cool at first... became annoying to watch after the first few episode and got dropped from my care about watching list... When I heard that the second part wasn't going to have the flashbacks and such I meant to give it a shot, but I didn't care enough to ever turn it on... I'm pretty certain that is what happened to everyone.

V i never heard anything bad about other than it's not the original V and everyone loved it so no clue what happened there. I never watched it... thought about it, but never decided to.
  17. The whole idea behind the season was that to DS is able to bring Apokalips closer to earth because there is so much hopelessness in the world and it is the heroes, in particular, the red-blue blur, if he showed himself that can inspire the hope that is needed to win.

I'm sorry, but streaking by and then going further out of sight will not do that.

What they should have done is have the little Legion of Doom start rampaging through Metropolis and have the heroes fight them, eventually them getting pushed back against crowds of people...having the crowds beginning to turn on the heroes and the omega symbols start showing through the skin and their eyes going blacker... and then Superman drops in gives a quick speech and he along with the other heroes fight back the bad guys. Then have him give another speech about whats happening and how they're going to stop this. He guts cut off as the people's omega symbols vanish one by one during his speech and then the planet vanishes.

It's epic, does the inspiration thing right, and shows the journey to superman...not the destination, and wraps up an arc they missed.

The memory thing with Lex is lame as was the Supergirl leaving thing. They did it because they wanted to get it closer to canon... but why? You already have cloned luthor, Superboy, Clark and lois together, etc. There is no way you can make it match up and doing so just looks sloppy... and with the whole Lex thing it is bad writing. Let Lex know who Superman is... it makes no difference the stories surrounding him and Superman as he attacks Lois and Clark multiple times anyways... it actually makes more sense when you think that Lex knows Clark is Superman.

    No Pete Ross = lame

The Chloe intro and outro with the comic was stupid and took a few minutes they could have done something else with.

The 7 years later thing with them not being married yet was stupid... especially with him calling her Miss Lane. Everyone already knows their a couple and were going to get married at the daily planet so it doesn't make any sense for them to be talking like that.
What would have been cool is to jump to the point in the future where we saw past Clarks PoV and instead seen Present Clark's PoV.

It seems to me that writers in hollywood down't know how to write open ended 3 act movie/episodes currently. Both the Smallville finale and Thor seemed incomplete and like we were missing the 3rd act... almost as if it was cut out after the fact. If I consider Smallville's Finale as incomplete... that we are missing the 3rd act it's a decent episode, but as a final episode missing the actual climax... it's trash.
  18. 12 mins and 3 more arcs to wrap up... let's see them do it
  19. >.> btw did you guys see the villain group?

    Captain Cold
    Roulette
    Toyman

The Puddle Jumpers have their own power source and it was discussed. They had a system that the PJs could be tied into the city for some reason... I forget why but it was only enough for emergency power or some such.

Awww sour grapes huh. No matter how much you want to trash those two shows the simple fact remains that they had fanbases large enough to keep them on the air for years. (SG1 - 10 years, SGA - 5 years) While SGU which aired Oct, 2009 didn't have the fanbase to keep it from getting cancelled 1 year later in Dec, 2010.

So as much as it galls you, yes the viewers felt the shows were better written and had more likable characters.
It's not as straight forward as that.

SG1 and SGA are different show types. And they are different genres.

    SGU is a drama serial.
SG1 and SGA are more comedy one-shot stories

When you switch like that you are going to get a massive negative feedback and it's going to take a while to get numbers back, much longer than a new brand.

You do realize they went through the star with the food all out in the open and it was fine... if it was that bad the food would have been destroyed... this shows that they have a way of cooling the food separate from the rest of the ship, but even still it shouldn't be that hard to find a spot in the ship with AC and have everyone go there and turn it on full bore... i dunno like the chair room >.>

  23. fantasy novels are less likely to be read by hyper critical idiots that don't understand how the world works where as graphic novels are a much more broad audience and stories can cross genres thus the hyper critical idiots that don't mind x in one genre will see it in y genre and then the two cross over and they complain.
