    Power Effects: Forcefields

All of the Forcefield powers look kind of dated. The swirly, sparkly water-ish look was nice in 2004, but not so much now. With all the bubbles that have been added to CoH since then, the original bubbles look kind of lackluster. I'm especially thinking of World of Confusion. That vertical ring sprite in it makes the bubble feel more three dimensional, which the Forcefield bubbles kind of don't. Also Barrier, but the flashing in that gets a bit grating on the eyes.

Other things that could be used to make Forcefields look spiffier would be effects like refraction. We have the water effect, and the surface of the forcefields look like water, so maybe adding the refraction water effect to it could make it look different? I know the Thermal shields already use that for a heat effect.

Well, I think that's all I got. I just want to see the 2004 forcefields updated to a 2011 version.
Seconded - and another thing about Force Fields - PLEASE make the casting animations of Deflection and Insulation shield shorter, they take so much longer to buff a team with than the Thermal and Cold shields, it's just silly.
  2. Welcome to the forums, Tunnel Rat.

The biggest VFX type things I want to see make it to City of Heroes are:
    1. Power customization for Mastermind/Robotics - let the lasers and force fields be customized like Demon and Necromancy can color some of their pets' powers.
    2. Particle effect wings, like wings made out of light or fire or ice, et cetera.
    3. Combat auras that would go around the weapon based melee sets, like having a fire aura that would radiate around your Broadsword while drawn.
    4. Power customization for weapon sets, I.E. changing the color of the particles that fire when you slash people with the weapon sets, the crazy laser thing from Katana/Golden Dragonfly, etc. The one I would like to see most would be Archery/Trick Arrow, actually, because right now the FX for them is extremely tech-themed (silver metal arrows with like, grenades and stuff on them...) which is very counter-intuitive to me - archery should definitely have some support for magic characters.
      • Plain ordinary wooden arrows for powers would work acceptably as a simple(ish) solution to the current inherent technology theme.
      • Arrows made of fire/ice/light/acid/etc would be cool for Blazing/Explosive/Ice/Flash/Acid Arrow/etc.
      • Laser arrows to go with the Vanguard Bow would be neat.
    5. Alternate Animations:
      • Weapons for the elemental melee powers that don't have them (I.E. Cremate in Fiery Melee using the fire sword)
      • Non-weapons animations for the elemental melee powers that don't have them (I.E. Fire Sword using a punch in Fiery Melee)
      • Origin themed animations/VFX for blast type powers (Maybe some cool runes and fancy motions for magicy blasts, possibly even adding weapons like a staff or gun to shoot blast powers out of as far as new tech goes)

Edit: As mentioned by another poster, power customization for pool powers would also be really nice... especially the Travel and Patron/Ancillary pools.

Is there any kind of status on this update? I'd like not to see this thread die in obscurity without one.

I did not already know that. Thanks. That's absolutely unacceptable to have a huge announcement saying "your charge will be half of what it says on the in-game store" falsely.

The price on the in-game store (9.99) is what is showing up as the debit pre-authorization on my online bank account page. I'm going to be a little miffed if I end up spending $60 on this instead of the $30 I anticipated because of this announcement.
  7. We discovered on Freedom that almost 100% of the lag during a Hamidon raid consisting of 4 full teams in a league was caused by Destiny: Barrier. The first wave it was absolutely horrible, we had used all our Destiny buffs - second wave, the leader asked for no Barriers, and we were fine (until someone popped their Barrier on Hami after the mitos, then the lag spiked noticeably again).

Since they're not actually Shalice Tilman's giant boobies, I motion to make the term more suited to the character. Mother Mammaries would be an appropriate choice.
  9. The Gamespot article is... pretty bad, honestly. The writer is pretty clearly confused about.. well, basically everything. Someone should probably get in contact with them and correct it.
  10. Here's my revised build - I'm pretty pleased with how it looks, the one extremely obvious problem I'm aware of is that I really am at a loss with what to do with EM Pulse. I have it sitting with five empty slots in the build.
Any suggestions for that or anything else would, again, be greatly welcomed.
Edit: I'd also love to hear some opinions on Musculature Core versus Musculature Radial. On the one hand, Core adds an ED bypassed enhance of 13.3% to-hit debuff, 22% end. mod. buff, and 22% runspeed buff (and none of the runspeed powers are ED capped anyway, so they'd all get the full benefit), which are all actually relevant to some degree to this build. On the other hand, are those effects going to be relevant *enough* to go from a 30% damage boost to 22%? It's only 8% damage, but then again... it's 8% damage - which isn't an insubstantial increase to total output, versus some relatively minor boosts to stam, AM, and RI (and the runspeed powers, but who really cares about that?).

  11. Thanks a ton, Santa, you've given me quite a few good points to work through.
I'll post a second attempt once I have time to get back to it, hopefully later tonight.
  12. Hi folks,
I'm thinking of building a DP/Rad Corruptor with a couple specific goals in mind:
    1. Strong debuffing potential (sort of inherent to /Rad)
    2. High Global Recharge to achieve Perma-Hasten+Perma-Accelerate Metabolism, without needing to use the Alpha Boost on it (so that I could use Musculature Core instead) primarily to provide:
A.) the group force multiplier of perma-AM
B.) the ability to unload rapid, powerful AOE and single target attacks that can't be spammed without heavy recharge.

I have little experience in the realm of high recharge builds, or blasting, for that matter, since before inventions were around. Am I on to something effective here or is there a better way to go about a similar effect?
Please excuse any sloppiness in the build, this is also my first attempt at using Mids' and I can't imagine I did it perfectly. I know my slotting order is wonky, for example.

A note, I did a little bit of frankenslotting on some of the attacks to prop up the lower enhanced values as best as I could figure. Again, attack oriented builds aren't my usual perview, so tips in that area as well would be much appreciated.

As mentioned in the OP, I updated my video drivers today, early on in my quest to improve my framerates.

I would be nothing short of dumbfounded if it was due to a lack of video memory since the rig is running two cards with 1024MB each and the shared system memory is another 2048.

If it's overheating I'm really not sure what I'm going to do about it, there are more fans in this case than any other I've ever built. =(
  14. With everything maxed: About 7-8 FPS.
With just FSAA off: 9-11 FPS.
With just AO at High Quality: 9-11 FPS.
With AO at High Quality and FSAA off: 14-16 FPS.

No difference on any of those between 0 and 16x AF.
These values are all in Steel Canyon.

Edit: Reading comprehension failure. High performance =/= High quality.
At High Performance I'm seeing ~30 with FSAA off, ~20 at 32x.

Edit2: And... while playing with various levels of FSAA, my client suddenly froze with a popup about my graphics configuration not meeting the minimum requirements to run the application.

  16. Tried that. No change between off and 16x.
Also tried FSAA - difference between off and 32x is 2-3 fps.
  17. Hey guys.
Build a new desktop PC recently as my old one was damaged by a roommate who decided that as compensation he would buy it from me and fix it.
Decided that I would get a little crazy (I bought all the parts during Newegg's Black Friday sale and got pretty incredible deals, it's not 100% top of the line, but it's a ton of bang for what I paid).
I was expecting at least decent performance out of it for COX, even maxed out, at 1920x1080 resolution, based on the performance noted in the ultra mode thread here on an older card and before SLI was functional, even, but I am getting 7-10 FPS in Steel Canyon and haven't even bothered to try CoV or GR zones as a result.

    The relevant specs are:
    3.2GHz 6 core CPU
2x GeForce 460 GTX 1GB video RAM GPU SLI configured
    16GB RAM

I updated my video drivers tonight and saw about a 2 FPS improvement.
Really left scratching my head as to what else to do. Is this actually expected performance for these specs? It seems odd to think that you would literally need a 500 series card to get reasonable framerates for maxed ultra mode since they didn't even exist when it came out.

I got on the forums today to ask this myself.
I don't have a lot of play time anymore, but I cleared some up today so I could try to get my Scrapper a Rikti sword. I got on this afternoon and waited almost two hours for an invasion to happen on Virtue server and ended up quitting without seeing a single one.
    That was majorly depressing.
  19. Some of the stuff I'd most like to see available to players overall would be:

    Circle of Thorns
    Carnival of Shadows
    Sky Raiders
    The Lost

And yes I'd probably rather see those sooner than new pieces.
  20. 1.) An alternate to the awful chestbeating animation for anything that uses it. Even if the alternate is really simple, generic toggle activation would be perfectly fine in my opinion, I just hate that emote.

2.) An alternate set for each of the standard 3 "blast" animations that get used over and over by basically every ranged non-weapon set.

3.) Particle Weapon animations for power melees that don't have them // Non-particle weapon animations for power melees that do.

    A thought regarding scabbards/holsters:

The tech to have items that only appear in combat mode already exists - that's how weapons and combat auras work. Couldn't the "weapons" (really just handles) in the holsters have that same logic applied to them, inversely, so they only appear when not in combat? Then, when you entered combat and did the draw animations, the holstered weapons would disappear, and your real ones would appear in your hands. It would take some positioning work to make it look just perfect, but it should be possible.
  22. Kind of a weird bug that I can't find any mention to (though my search-fu is weak).

Playing a Male TA/Archery Defender tonight I noticed that if I have my bow out in Ninja Run stance, standing still, and turn it off with the bow still visible, the character will switch to the Katana pose (two hands holding the center of the bow) instead of the regular Bow stance. This happened every time I tried it (three or four to be sure) so I think it's a guaranteed thing. I cannot confirm if it does or doesn't happen on Female or Huge models.

    Hope it's an easy one!

  23. Name Change successful.
    Leveling pact intact.
    Question answered.

  24. Thanks, I submitted a question.
For posterity's sake I'll post the answer here when I get one.

  25. Just a quick question I'm hoping someone might have the answer to:
Does Name Changing a character in a Leveling Pact have adverse affects on the Leveling Pact (I.E. breaking it)?
    Thanks,
