For those that were asking, it looks like those who got invited to the Duel Pistol closed beta do NOT have an invite to I17 closed beta. I finally put Test on last night - or should I say, early this morning - and found out that I could not access the Training Room. Thinking that somehow things had been screwed up somewhere along the lines, I sent off a question to Support. I recieved word back today that only those with I17 closed beta inviate were able to access the room at this time.
I got my DP closed beta invite back on Feb. 9th, but didn't have time to install Test. Since I didn't use that invite, does this now mean that I will never get another closed beta invite in the future? -
Quote:Yeah, I just got the e-mail reply from Support saying the same thing. The Test server is closed for i17 Closed Beta, only the people who are invited in atm are able to log into the server.
If you don't get a invite to the Closed Beta, you'll have to wait until Open Beta to log in.
If you were invited to the Close Beta, PM one of the Mods for help.
The problem is, if there was a message saying that it was in closed beta mode at the time, I wouldn't have felt frustrated, thinking that things had been screwed up even though I had followed the installation instructions to the letter - after having to re-read parts of it three times because it was quite confusing. -
Quote:Well, I finally decided to try and set up Test. I went through the instructions, copied the needed shortcut, typed in the proper ' -test' and let it start downloading. This was yesterday (Mar. 9) late afternoon, and I gave up after seeing that it was going to take 22 hours and the time kept increasing! So, I decided to wait a few hours, and restarted the download at about 11:30 PM, and was given an estimate of only three hours. Needless to say, it took a bit longer, ending at about 4:20 AM. So, it finishes, I load it up, get logged in no problem, click on 'Training Room', and get the following:When I was able to download the patch, starting around 8:30 PM EST on the 2nd, it took me about an hour and 15 mins. to download. Then, when it went to apply, something screwed up. I got an error about C:\Program Files (x86)\CohTest/something-or-other not existing/being valid. Well, yeah. The web uses / and compys use \. Ooops.
I had to close the updater, and the restart it. At that point, it downloaded the file manifest, and fixed each file, byte by byte. At one point, it said it had just shy of 10 hours to go before it was finished. >.< IIRC, it started around 10:00 PM EST, and when I finally gave up and went to bed, it was around 1:00 or 2:00 AM EST. It was still working on it when I got up for work Wednesday at 8:30 AM EST, but was finished when I got home at 1:30 PM EST.
Dunno what went wrong and caused it to throw out the wrong slash, but that royally sucked. >.< And it seems I'm the only one it happened to. *sigh*
So, yeah, to me, it kinda seems a little disorganized, but not too bad. *shrugs* YMMV.
" Account XXXXXXXX is not allowed on this server. reason: Public access to this server has been disabled."
(I've edited out my account info here, just to be on the safe side.)
I actually sent in a question ticket about how to connect to the test server - because, let's face it, the instructions they've given in the past are not all that user-friendly - so I just added to my question with the info I've given here. I'll leave it for now and try again later tonight, in the hopes that it's just a case of needing to wait a set number of hours for it to kick in, but to tell the truth, this is not very reassuring to me. -
So my GeForce GT220 1GB vid card should be good to go?
-
I only have one question. has anyone seen the exact specs for the new graphics mode? I'm wondering because I bought my new system with sweet specs as it is only 6 weeks ago. I'd like to see just how sweet it still is, if it is.
-
Okay, I'm ready to take back everything I said in my prvious post. I finally got in to do the Snappy mishs, and find that there are a lot more Arachnos there then I remember from years past. Also, it looks like the mish diff is now set to the mish holder's level, not the team leader's - AND everyone is SK'd to the mish holder's level.
Is this a big 'you-know-what' from the devs for us hating their banner and LW events? -
I am glad that there is no new content in this years Spring event - especially along the lines of the 'new' content we got in the Hallowe'en and Winter events. (And Madhatter, I hope you were being sarcastic, as I don't want the devs getting any ideas like that.)
I've said it before and I'll say it again, the Banner and Lord Winter events were total busts. Why? Because in those events, it seemed that players would do the event once, get the badge, and then not bother because it was so tough, leaving those who came in late to the event out of luck getting enough teams together to do the events effectively.
Contrast this to all the other missions in the Winter, Spring and Hallowe'en events. There, players would readily jump on teams to help other players get the needed badges, and would stay on until everyone on that team had gotten them - even if they have everything themselves already. (I know I've done this many times with many toons over the years.)
This is the sense of community that I feel the devs were trying to artificially create with the 'new' content in the past two events. There are just some things that you can't instantly create, you have to let them develope naturally.
That said, I have quite a number of toons I want to get Weedwhacker and Coldblooded on - and a lot more for all the other stuff. I'm psyched! -
I believe I've mentioned this before Arcanaville, but with Champions and HERO System, it's more the other way around from what you've said here. HERO Systems actually came out of Champions, in an attempt to build up a universal gaming system to try and rival GURPS. GURPS ("Generic Universal Role-Playing System" - an acronym that Steve Jackson Games claims was just put on it until something better sounding came along) 2nd edition came out just over 20 years ago, emerging from the company's one-on-one man-to-man combat system. It too is a point-based system, but with a set of clear guidlines for building a character.
It should have been a telling point for me that I was able to realize very early on that min/maxing wasn't just insanely easy, it was almost manditory to be able to do what I wanted to do. (It should also be telling that while GURPS is about 3 years into it's 4th edition, HERO Systems is now on it's 6th edition.)
In a way, CO vs. COH seems to be an almost reenactment of the whole HERO Systems vs. GURPS problems years ago. There will always be gamers who will swear by HERO Systems, and swear at GURPS. Then there are other gamers (like myself) who detest HERO Systems because it was such a magnet for all the gaming min/maxing wienies. (BTW, I think I also mentioned this before, but the standard hero stances in CO are taken directly from the hero picture templates from the original PnP game.)
I actually did play CO during their last free weekend. I built two toons, one martial artist and one gun-girl. The martial artist ended up eating a lot of dirt (or snow, when I took her into the Canadian zone) as she died time and again. On the other hand, the gun-girl ROCKED - to the point where I was catching myself saying out loud "Damn, I want this powerset in COH!"
But that just emphesises Arcanaville's point, that certain traits and powers will be coveted by players because they are better over others powers that will be avoided like the plague simply because they aren't as fun to play with. Now COH may not be perfect, and we might find some of the powersets and ATs somewhat limiting, but I was finding myself enjoying COH more after that free weekend.
There are a few things I liked about CO - like the expantion to more than just two colours for costumes, and the fact that you could have things asymetrical (which meant that my gun-girl could have a watch on her right wrist) - that I really wish we could have in here. Just that there wasn't enough there to keep me with that game.
And I'll end with one of my basic wishes for bases. Can we please finally get basic wall and floor building sections to design walls and floors the way we want them in those huge cavernous rooms? -
Quote:Actually, the toughness factor dovetails into this. And I pretty much said this in a PM I sent off to a redname with my concerns over the trend I was starting to see - first with the Hallowe'en banner event and then with the Lord Winter event - were that it was starting to bleed fun away from the game.I wonder if part of the problem with these new events is not the difficulty in itself (though it may need tweaking here and there) but rather the badging mindset of doing it once and then leaving the event alone as opposed to doing the event for the fun of it or at least trying to help others.
I mentioned how in years past, I would keep a team going until I was assured that all of my team had gotten everything: Cap Buster, Bane of Dannon, Toothbreaker, etc. But with these last two events, I fear that the mindset has been one of "Okay, I got the badge. But man, was that tough! I don't think I'll bother doing that again."
And it was more acute of a problem for folks over the Christmas Holidays, as there were probably more people who could not log into the game in the first week or two due to other RL events - one person over on another forum was saying that because of holidays with family, she wasn't able to get home and log back on until Jan. 5th - that there was more frustration in the final two weeks of this event.
Myself, I was able to get the badge on only 5 of my many alts, less then 5% - and two of those were during the 'live beta' sneak peek. This is in comparison to last year when I was able to find teams all through the event to kit out about a third of my alts.
I'm just worried about what, if any, 'new' content along these lines that is coming for next month? -
Once again, those who've done this are not bothering to help those who haven't, mainly because of the extreme toughness of this event - just like it was for the banner event during Hallowe'en. In all the other special event missions, I'd be one of those staying on with a toon that had already gotten everything just to help out my team until I've made sure that EVERYONE had gotten all the badges.
THAT is the sense of community that I think the devs were going for with these two new events, but failed.
And I'm gonna say it again - if these events were made extra tough in order to disuade the farmers and RMT'ers, then you have failed yet again. Those individuals will do whatever they have to to find a way around it, or go on and do something else to get what they want. -
Thanks, I'll try these later today or tomorrow - it's almost 4 AM here, and I need to get to bed.
(Actually, a lot of those sound similar to the settings I had for my ATI Sapphire.) -
Just got my new system today, and still tweeking things. (Really miffed that I won't be able to do anything about no Outlook Express until at least Monday.)
Okay, the specs are:
-Intel Core2 Duo 2.93 Ghz
-4 GB DDR2 RAM
-nVidia Geoforce GT220 1 GB
-Windows 7 64-bit
Also, my screen resolution is 1,600x900, which is what I just chanced the game screen resolution to.
What advice is there for best results here? -
(Okay, not sure if I should start a new thread for this, but here it goes.)
Well, I've been running Win XP for a long while, and had no problems. I'm getting a new system - picking it up on the weekend - with Win 7 Home 64-bit installed. (After porting over all needed files from my old system, I'm probably gonna use it as a backup for mundane stuff like my writings and such.)
So basicly, all I have to make sure of is:
1) I have full admin status. (The owner of the computer store I've been going to has done that with my last two systems I've bought there, so I'm not worried.)
2) That I have full updated drivers for my vid card.
Anything else? -
Dollymistress, I was wondering when someone was gonna put 2 and 2 together and make something of the expansion's name. Let me guess, that's Joe redside, right?
Nice touch. -
Funny you should mention Sims 2 in your post. I know that before I just stopped base construction out of sheer frustration - trying to build a small movie theater room in my one SG's 'sorority house' - I posted a suggestion of buildable walls and floors. Instead of having to spend 3,200 prestige for each square of floorspace, and worrying about going over that magical 11K item number and crashing, could we be able to make floor sections in various sizes and then piece them together.
I was using desks - being able to see up through the tile floors in a sorority house is a bad idea.
I'm hoping that there is one or two of the dev team that is still working on something for bases, even in any spare time they might have, in order to let us be able to do what we want.
I mean, really, can't I just have a simple kitchenette with a simple oven, fridge and microwave for the girls to make a quick breakfast and coffee in the morning? I'd even be willing to pay for the booster pack: "COH 'Sims' hero-lair". -
Quote:Sadly, I found this to be true as well. It seems that while some of us have been asking for 'tougher' opponents and content, this might once again be another instance of "Oh man, this is way too tough, I don't want to go through that again. Hmm...I wonder what I'm missing on some of my alts in the chalet?"For those worried about the difficulty of completing these new events on low population servers, I suggest you drop everything else and try to complete them as soon as possible after the Winter Event starts. I had no trouble getting the Deadly Apocalypse badges on low population servers when the Halloween event first started, but by Novemeber 1st it was hard to get enough people interested even on Virtue.
In other words, during Hallowe'en, people just ignored the banner event after awhile, and simply concentrated on ToT'ing to get the event defeat badges. I'm guessing that the attitude of some by the second week was one of if there were only two teams or less then it wasn't going to be sucessful, so why bother starting in the first place.
I hope that that attitude doesn't show up with this event, but I'm not holding my breath. -
That's just it, "The right mix of people."
I'm starting to wonder if someone has decided that "Well, noone is doing Reichman TF, so let's make every special GM to his streangth and toughness until they start playing him."??? -
Okay, thanks guys. That makes sense - annoying as heck, but still makes sense.
-
Okay, did it a second time, and our two near-full teams were able to finish him with about 45 seconds to spare. However, it seems that I still have the same level of debt after the event.
I'm wondering if it should be debt-free like during a rikti/zombie event or during the Hallowe'en event?
I also agree that the WL you fight before the enent seems to be tougher than in years past. Also, it seems like he can summon other blights and frostlings almost at will.
I like a challenge, but not a total frustration-fest. -
I just tried it, and all I have to show for my effort on my 50 is 394K+ debt. We got him down to 25%, went to deal with the first guardian, and when we got back to him he was almost back up to full.
Unless the devs take a serious look at things, this is going to be a big dissapointment for many players, just like the Hallowe'en Deadly Apocolypse event was. -
I was in the chalet earlier with Teen, and found a slight problem. The list from the Candy Cane store was timing out on me. I asked if anyone else was experiencing this, and got at least one 'yes'.
Also, I noticed that I was offered the chance to buy an item with a previous Winter Event badge, even though I have everything from years past. -
As of last, I've noticed that most of the enemy I face seem to have five points of health left unless I do close to a massive attack. No matter what I would hit it with, no matter how much damage I would do, there would more times than not where I would have to hit it one more time just to deal with that last five points and drop it.
In fact, a couple of times after I started noticing this, I took a closer look at how much damage my attacks were doing and how much health the enemy had. There were more than a few times where they had five health left when that last attack should have dropped them. (I was keeping my cursor hovered over the enemy stats, and could tell just how much health any one of them would have.)
Now if this only happened once in a while, I'd be willing to put it up to "Okay, my last attack didn't do enough damage." But when it would happen over and over again, even after landing a massive critical hit, I started getting suspicious.
I've already sent a bug petition ingame, but thought I'd post about this here. -
Ahhh....so that's why this thread got off on the 'quiting smoking' tangent. (Since I occassionally get sent to a post in a thread I've already read earlier - possible bug in this software - I tend to skim through posts until I see one I haven't seen yet; that's why I was wondering what was happening.)

Quote:However, on the flipside of the argument, the human brain can only remember so much. With the huge number of websites that any one person on the net can be subscribed to, would you insist that they have a seperate unique password for each and every one? Yes, most people are lazy, and there are those out there who will take advantage of that. Yet even when you tell Windows to save your passwords, more often than not you will still have to type in that password every few weeks or so.The SysAdmin in me cringes at that tale. Sorry to say, I would have taken the same action, if she won't help herself...
I've always wondered about the faculties of people who are unable to remember anything but one single simple password. Makes you wonder whether they should have been issued drivers licenses.
Then again, my opinion is that the big computer companies and ISPs should actually be going after these malcontents - whom some experts are now warning are part of big organized crime syndicates, and no longer just some pimply-face teen in their parent's basement - rather than making regular 'net users feel like common criminals for just trying to access their fave websites. (Banking and adult websites being the exclusion in my mind - there's still the need to keep malcontents out of the former and minors out of the latter.)

I logged on with All-American Teen (hero) and Grey Whisper (villain) to check out the artwork on both badges. I know that back in September, after months of frustration with timecards, I switched over to my prepaid Mastercard, so there should be no problem for those who switched over. (I would have done so sooner, but it took awhile to get in touch with someone at MC to see what was the minimum amount I could add onto my card - the pamphlet said $100 min. but I found that was just the initial amount.)
Oh, and for those of you complaining about the whole PST/EST/CET debacle, just be thankful for the concept of Standard Time, otherwise there would be litterally hundreds of times we'd have to deal with.
