I apologise for not having read this entire thread, but I wanted to respond to the OP.
First of all, I understand your frustration. Some things I learned about Freedom with time (disabled IO's in particular) have dampened my enthusiasm. I still think Freedom is nice, I just look at it differently now, more as a way to go back to play new characters with older mechanics (no IO's) than a way to return to my old account. I like the game and as a too-casual player who doesn't feel paying $15 a month is justified I think that any option to play for free is good.
I don't know what other games you compare to. Having just read the full forum rules and been reminded not to compare to other games, I'm deleting the comparison I posted and will just say that Freedom is much better than another game gone free to play I tried, and I'm sure other games (some of which I only played as free) have some limitations equally bad or free.
BTW I just wanted to say that I think it's good that people are posting about their impressions of Freedom on the public forum. The beta forums aren't visible to non-subscribers, most information about Freedom is kept there, and so outsiders who are interested in Freedom have no way to learn a lot of things. -
Regarding the prices going up, that's why they give a warning about that, so people can get them now and won't feel like they're being cheated (but I guess this doesn't help for some people). Except for that store problem, which I guess is the reason I haven't been able to buy that extra $1.99 CoH code I wanted.
Regarding the release date, since the word on the last Freedom Friday was that the announcement of Freedom won't be from one day to the next, I guess it won't come at the end of this month as some expected. It's still possible that something big is planned at that time, like a public beta.

Checking out this thread, it looks like Ultra Mode isn't too heavy for modern CPU's. Probably any Sandy Bridge CPU, including the new low end Pentium ones, will run it at decent frame rates. For a GPU I'd suggest something that's not low end, but considering the OP doesn't even know his monitor size, I'd say that he's running at low resolution, so most modern cards will work. Probably anything from Radeon 6670 and up will work nicely.
That said, this is just from what I see on that thread and my estimates of what the OP needs.
Edit: The problem is that OEM's tend to bundle $80 graphics cards with $200+ CPU's, where a $100 will be enough. It would be best to find a place that sells custom specced PCs. I think something like the following will work well if the main purpose is to play CoH:
CPU: Pentium G840
Graphics: Radeon 6670
RAM: 4GB
Disk: 500GB -
Thanks for the info.

Really? Okay, that makes it easier. Plus it makes server transfer tokens less useful. I was thinking of putting some free VIP server transfers to moving character to Union, but if they're not there there's not much point.
I guess I'll just continue using the servers I've always used (Protector, Virtue), maybe add Union just so that I could play with people in a closer time zone.
Thanks a lot for the answer. -
ThePieMaskot, if you're planning to play as Premium, then I think the $1.99 account would be useful. It would give you two character slots on a Premium account (although its lowest level) with 400 PP. More character slots are always nice for Premium considering you don't get much. The 400PP won't get you anything in terms of AT's or powersets (unless you wait for a sale, in which case it might, but I won't count on it), but it could still be nice if you just want a couple of characters using the default AT's and powersets but with a couple of unique costume pieces, or add a little funds to buy something, so it's effectively a discount.
If you plan to stay subscribed (and you'll have to if you want incarnate stuff), then I think such an account will be less useful.
Personally I'm on the first case (plan to play Premium most of the time) and I'm running now on the $1.99 account. Would have bought a couple more if I could, but I think it was a fluke I managed to get this one (got a "try retailer" message before that and since then).
By the way, Robotech Master, nice guide. I discovered it just the other day, and I'm thinking I might take advantage of the PC Game Supply time card sometime. Would be good value for two months of VIP subscription. -
Is there any easy way to test the ping and connection quality to the game servers? I understand that creating a character on each server should do the trick, but I'd like to avoid that if possible.

It would be nice if they could have such a sale on Steam or D2D. It would allow more people around the globe to buy this as well as gift it more easily.

I don't remember if the code was shown fully.
I thought about buying another code, but the store doesn't let me. I guess I was lucky the first time. -
You got my hopes up for a second, but they did say it was only for new accounts.

Quote:I think you just cost me another $4 (or $6), curse you. (Or rather, kiss your feet.) I'll have to try that on one of my old accounts.2. It can be used to upgrade a lapsed CoH account (trial or otherwise).
Edit: Tried it, and looks like it's only possible to apply it to a trial account. At least when I chose to use the code I was only offered trial accounts to apply it to. -
Failed to buy it with PayPal but it worked with a credit card.
Quote:Hey, I paid for the CoH and CoV collector boxes, and that'd be infinitely more than a Freedom player will pay for a free account. It just bothers me that I paid a fifteen times higher price and I'm getting pretty much the same.
As for GR, I think it's worth it for Premium accounts. That's why I bought it (on sale) for both my old accounts. This third one won't have it.
Edit: Actually I haven't yet decided where to apply GR. It might make more sense on this new account since it's a trial containing two GR characters. On the other hand there may be more benefit in applying it to the old account and just starting GR characters there from scratch.
