Oh goodie. We get Ming Na playing yet another political-type with delusions of grandeur.
I was expecting some reference the Falcon when things started going wrong up in the capsule. Fargo, I am disappoint... -
Eureka and Warehouse 13 return with new episodes tonight, plus we get the premier of Alphas which seems to be a Heroes-esque show. Hopefully, without the twins...

Quote:If you're going by single 12v rail amp, the 550W clocks in at 25A on the third rail (with the first two at 22A) while the 650W has 52A on its single 12v rail. Thing about PSUs is that you should get more than what you need at any one time. I picked up a 1000W PSU w/83A on 12v. Did I need that much? Nope. But it sure is nice to have it.I see. I wasn't sure how much "excess power" I would need, so which of these is better
550W, $50

650W, $75

I would go with the 650W. -
Quote:No Monarch? Does that mean 21 and 24 are also going bye-bye?So long as they completely wipe out all the Hawk becoming Monarch/Extant garbage I'll be happy with the reboot. I actually liked Hawk and Dove as characters and was really annoyed at how and why they turned Hawk into Monarch. They didn't do it because it was planned all along. They did it because somebody at DC let slip that Captain Atom was Monarch. Since DC still wanted the reveal to be a shocker they just randomly grabbed some other b list hero and used him instead.

Graphics Card Hierarchy Updated to July 2011
A GT 430 is only three steps up from what you had. Not much of an improvement. An ATI Radeon HD 5750, what I'm using, is doing me pretty well and can be had for around $100 more or less depending upon which manufacturer you go with. Of course, some of what you'll see is dependent upon your CPU, RAM, etc. I'm running at settings right now that are head and shoulders above what I had with my old CPU, despite having the same graphics card. -
Supperman...making sure the right forks are used for the right course! Faster than a speeding scathing glance across the table, more powerful than too-hot soup, it's Supperman!

Quote:So...character growth is reset back to zero. Barbara Gordon has no good reason to go back to being Batgirl when there's two already available for that title. Her going back to Batgirl is equivalent to Dick going back to being Robin. She's outgrown it and that persona. They aren't spitting in your face. You are simply taking it personally. And they aren't divesting themselves of history. Stories that are important to the characters still happened (maybe some of the details will have changed to fit). Barbara crippled by the Joker? Still happened. Blackest Night / Brightest Day? Still happened (as evidenced by the spectrum of ring bearers). Slobo? Maybe not.
As well as saying that psychopath known as Damian is still Robin. They want to have their cake and eat it too. Reset everything, but oh wait, not quite. Keep the crap but jettison the good stuff. And yes, they are pretty much jettisoning all the character growth that has happened since CoIE.
Quote:Stories that are important to the character will either still be part of their history, or they will be retold to fit in with the modern day (and for everyone who gets up in arms about this, may I point you to Green Lantern: Emerald Dawn). If the characters are not allowed to age, then, every so often, they need to be re-imagined. Otherwise, Batman would still be a gun-toting vigilante who was little better than the criminals he murdered and Superman would still be using his fantastic powers to mash mobsters with little thought of restraint or regard for the injuries he caused them.
Seems to me, that they want to take it back to the start because they've run out of ideas and want to retell the same stories again but only slightly different.
Quote:What is happening is not so different from what happened after Crisis on Infinite Earths or Zero Hour. The real difference is that DC actually has the balls to do it right this time, and have the new reality affect the entire line of books, rather than doing it piecemeal like they did after Crisis (remember the mess that was Hawkman after Crisis, or even the story gymnastics that needed to happen with the Wonder Woman reboot, such as the "Who is Donna Troy" storyline.)
One of the stated goals was to make it so that new readers could jump in without knowing a whole lot of backstory. But if things like Brightest Day, Killing Joke, Damian Wayne, all still happened, but everything was compressed into 5 years or so, people are going to even more confused. -
But don't you see...they HAVE to undo all of that meaningless backstory because it's confusing to the new reader. Not that this mishmash of kept and not-kept isn't...
-
God, reading that just nailed it home how ham-fisted this reboot is. Well...at least I have the 20+ years of stuff to get from the time of CoIE.

Quote:So...you were planning on spending the movie just staring into Conan's eyes?Blue eyes. 'Volcanic blue'. Not brown. Just sayin'.

Conan...Ronon...I'm sensing a pattern here...
Also, that second pic makes it look like he has boob implants.
Quote:No manscaping for them lads! RAWR!We're just used to Arnie and his smooth chested Conan. A hairy chest is natural, and manly. Hyborean men didn't shave their chests, man! -
Just gave it the first real test tonight and exceeded my expectations. Medium-highish graphics settings (on a Radeon HD 5750) and I was getting 15-20FPS on a Rikti mothership raid w/only the typical server side lag (and not just on the decks of the ship, maintaining a 15-20 with spikes to 25ish in the center bowl with everyone there). Hopping back from the raid was hitting 60FPS. I checked the ASUS AI program that came with the driver disc and found that with all six cores unlocked and running, that there was about 50% CPU capacity being used on each one (at stock 3.3GHz speed). Granted, I had a lot of Firefox windows opened, but that only amounted to 10%ish CPU on all six prior to starting CoH.
As far as "gaming" goes, it's a success for CoH, in my estimation. -
Doing nothing more than flipping a toggle on the mobo and the CPU goes up to 3.7. No messing with voltages or any of that stuff.

Quote:A life sentence takes on a whole different meaning when there's really no actual end to your life...Pffft... I admit, I'd really like to live to see the American Tricentennial, past that I dont know what I would do other than earn my badge for most depraved human being to have ever lived a thousand years. I figure a coupla hundred years in and I would have gotten bored with being a nice guy.

Quote:Presuming, in fact, that as people get longer-lived that they'll want to have kids. If you can have the knowledge that you'll effectively live forever, then there is no real impetus to breed and produce a new generation. Barring wanting the "experience" of having a kid. Just because someone can live to 1000, does not mean they'll be having kids that long. Heck, just look at our society now. People in their 30's and 40's just starting to have children vs how it was even a hundred years ago.
But mass immortality is unsustainable -- in short order we'll have to do something about overpopulation: everyone who wants to reproduce or live forever will have to do so on another planet or in space colonies. Cause we're running out of room and raw materials rather quickly, especially if we all live 150+ years.
Such life extensions will probably be hideously expensive. Probably 95% of the population will be unable to afford them outright. Others will have to take out "life-mortgages" to pay for the procedures. The people who are poor or bad credit-risks will not get 'em; they'll live, breed, and die as usual.
The article in and of itself sounds A LOT like the Future History storyline by Robert Heinlein. Or possibly Niven's Ringworld setup (been a while since I read that stuff). -
Quote:In other words, they'll be able to sell you a pill every day, but won't actually "cure" old-age! After all, much more profit-effective to not actually "cure" it, but rather to keep it at bay...
"And what I mean by decisive is the same sort of medical control that we have over most infectious diseases today."
I'm not worried about a population overage. As a being's life span approaches immortal, their reproduction rate approaches zero.
But I wonder if Woodrow Wilson Howard is somehow involved in this... -
Quote:Sideswipe is good, yes, but you shouldn't have Sideswipe without Sunstreaker. Had they flopped those characters around, it would've been better.Well Mirage/Dino should probably be reversed with Movieverse Sideswipe. In the End I'm just happy we saw a Movievese Sideswipe. (And Damn he's good.)
Quote:You just named a whole ton of things that likely will never see the light of day heh. I like the Dinobots, and the combiners teams but none of those things translate well to live action. Combiners and City bots have massive scale issues. Something they've tried hard to do keep in order in the films. Not to mention the combiner teams have eb able to transform into a robot and somethnig that resembles a limb. Why for the basic toys the constructicons only turned into a robot and vechiles, and the toy of Devastator only turned into a combiner and vechiles like the film.
Go back to the original combiners. The Aerialbots, along with the Stunticons, Combaticons, Protectorbots, etc., all were good. That first "Devastator" could've been a Decepticon trial run for real combiners. Heck, the story could even be written that the new batch of Constructicons help with the rebuilding of Chicago, surreptiously of course, and do something with Metroplex's spark/code/whatever. The Autobots need to field their combiners to stop him.
Quote:Unicron is lame. Even his name is lame; I mean look how close is name is to Unicorn. Unicorns don't strike fear nto hearts of their enemies. (besides the most interest man in the world.) Unicron was such a scale breaker, I don't think he'd ever go over well in a live action film. I mean whats the point of a planet sized bad guy? It's that just gross over kill. -
Quote:That ain't Mirage. Mirage is one of my favorites from the original toys/toons. Along with Shockwave (never got to have one of him, a friend did but never let anyone else play with it
Mirage in the novel and Dino in the film. ). They can call it what they want, but that ain't him.
Quote:Please no a 1000 times. Unicron is a plot device not a villain. He's too big to fight, and is a rather uninteresting villains since he's too dangerous to actually suceed at killing planets. I prefer villains the heroes can actually fight. I'd prefer never see any threads of the 86 film ever used in the live action films. Once was enough. Givne how little they had to do with Devastator, I don't picture them wanting have transformers that are planet sided. Unicron has been overused in all comics , and cartoons and needs ignored for awhile. -
Oh ya, something else...
The 3D sucked in this movie. I don't know if it was the projectionist, where I was sitting, or the actual movie, but about half of the scenes (and I mean literally half of the scene, half was in focus and half not) seemed blurry as hell. This was one of the few 3D movies that made my eyes water and gave me a headache. Even the craptacularness of Thor's 3D was better than the mess that I saw today. -
Quote:You say that like there's any measurable difference between the two...they were supposed to be futball hooligans? wow...the pictures gave people the impressions of nascar rednecks.
Saw it. Liked the explodey bits. Carly was a nice piece of eye candy. And I understand why Dylan didn't have a Heel-Face Turn, simply because the best he could hope for is a firing squad if/when the Autobots/Humanity won.
Thoughts:
Who was the red Autobot? Poor ol' Ironhide, constantly getting killamajigged. Surprised the Flying Dutchman (gotta be a Firefly AND an Halo:ODST reference there - even though Wash wasn't in ODST, Dutch was played by Jayne and forget the name of Mal's character) didn't get impaled on some random bit of metal. Unicron's gotta show up in the next one...reasoning being that the space bridge was some kind of interstellar/galactic beacon to him. Wish Skywarp and Thundercracker were innit. Wheelie was not quite as annoying and actually useful for a change. -
Quote:And one of the newspaper articles called her, "Rising Star". I mean, come on, could they get much more blatant?I liked that her call sign was Sapphire when she was in the air and I think I saw a sapphire pn her flight helmet too.
Yes she would look quite...excellent....as Star Sapphire. -
Well, something that was honking me off in the second episode...
The sound mixing.
Good god, sound guy. When you have people speaking and/or expository dialog, don't have the frickin' score cranked to 11! Couldn't understand half of what was being said over the trumpets/whatever instrument that was. Especially when it's a soft-spoken female voice.
I'll watch the rest of it, but man, if that scoring problem keeps happening, I'll be mightily disappointed. -
Quote:I have my reasons. Mostly due to the fact that by using/buying any Steam game, you are giving up any and all First Sale rights. It's not strictly limited to Steam, but outside of an MMO and DLC for xbox games, any game that requires that of me is not purchased or played by me.
Oh boy. This excuse has gone wafer thin over the years, imo.
I'm not against digital download services, after all, I buy stuff from GOG. But I don't buy any that require me to tie them to an account that they have the capability of closing out at any point with little to no recourse on my end or games that are priced anywhere near their boxed counterparts.
Quote:Shame. Unless, of course, it's a bad PC port, then I can understand that.
For me, PC gaming is all but dead. I can't really think of anything coming out that I feel an overwhelming need to get. I might look into Skryim at some point, provided it isn't a Steam-based game, but eh.
Quote:Oh yeah, the Corsair PSU, I believe, is better. Don't judge by wattage, at all.
In fact, this might have been good enough: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-020-_-Product
Really depends also on the video card power requirements.
But this might have been all in hindsight, considering it's been more than a week.
The good thing about this build is that if I ever need to, I can always change it out. I could easily see keeping this case for as long as the fans hold out and the ATX form factor for mobos is kept. I'm not one that is constantly on the upgrade treadmill. I will use a comp for as long as it's feasibly possible and still useful. I mean, heck, I still have a Pentium Pro 200 box and a Tandy 1000 that still work.
