Wow. Well, that definitely seems to seal it, confusion it is.
I've already got Fire Breath and Firey Embrace is a must have as soon as it's available.
Thanks for the help, again! -
Hello everyone, its time for me to pick your brains again.
Following the advice offered last time, Ive rolled a Plant/Fire Dom and Im having great fun with her. However, it is now time to pick my AoE soft control and I cant find much of a comparison on the boards. So which should I pick, Spore Burst or Seeds of Confusion?
Im aware of the downsides:
Confusion less xp
Sleep next to useless in a (bad) team
As I tend to solo a lot (not by choice) Im tempted to take Spore Burst but Ive heard very good things about Seeds although the recharge seems long. Could any of you friendly Doms help inform my choice? Thanks. -
Hi there, I rolled my Plant/Fire Dom a few weeks ago and she rocks! Possibly the most fun toon to go soloing with IMHO. So far, my slotting has been in this kind of pattern:
Controls - 1/2 Acc, 3 Duration, 1 Recharge.
Assault - 1 Acc, 3 Damage, 1 Recharge.
That seems to do me pretty well and the damage isn't half as bad as I thought it might be. -
As for kicking posterior, I have the joys of a full day off tomorrow so I will be around advancing my alts and my main for the day until about 8:30pm. If you need a hand, let me know and we can arrange a time or just drop me a line ingame @Dante.

I wouldn't worry about poor builds, anyone who took a look at some of mine would weep in despair and wonder how I managed to survive for so long. Besides, I've seen far worse when checking out other people's (e.g. four pools open at level 16). It's really not that bad. Anyone looking at Amber's might think I was suicidal to solo...
As it is, I only realised how essential the Fitness pool was a few months ago. I'm now using the respec that came with issue 7 to address all my old toons one at a time. I'm surprised you don't already have a freespec sitting there waiting for you (Derek was around before I7 yes?) Have a look in the message box next time you log on, it may well say "You have one unused respec available". -
Indeed, welcome to the fun and crazy world of roleplaying. There's a few of us about but we can be a little thinly spread. I don't get the chance to nip down to GG these days but I do keep 'Roleplayer' in my bios and my team search box which can help.
Nice bio, simple and to the point. Enjoy roleplaying and I hope to see you around. -
I think that since we hit the 20s, the level cap has kind of become less of an issue. I certainly struggle to gain more than half a level in one evening now whereas when we first started it was relatively easy to gain several levels in one go.
I think that we should just keep an eye on each others levels as we go and make sure we're not leaving others behind. For example, some people are still below 20 so perhaps we should pursue missions that are not exclusive to 20s upward if we have them in the team that night. We currently have some people on 24 the last time I looked so it would be easy for them to take missions in new areas and leave others high and dry. Perhaps two teams is an idea but we could alter our missions so that they capture everyone and hopefully get us all even. I will be taking 29 out a little more now as there are now 5 levels between him and Amber. I think we may just have to play it by ear. -
The sun was slowly setting, pouring rose coloured light into Dereks apartment. It had taken almost two whole days to clean up the mess that the PPD had left after raiding the place a few weeks earlier.
Derek was sat in front of the TV, Saffron curled into ball on the sofa next to him. He idly played with a strand of her dark hair that was slowly returning to its natural ginger. The TV was showing amateur footage of the battle in Sirens Call for the third time that night. Saffron let out a long sigh.
Whats up? said Derek.
Saffron was quiet for a second before she spoke. A lots changed, she said. I dont think Ive ever done anything like I did tonight.
Well, they were pretty tough, said Derek, Im just glad we had backup.
Saffron pulled herself upright. No, not that, she said. During the fight, I just got so scared. I ended up hiding in one of those big pipes. I didnt think I could be so afraid.
Derek reached for her. I didnt know he began. Saffron stopped him.
They werent like the others weve faced, she continued. The things we face everyday want to hurt us, sure. But that lot wanted us dead. I could feel it. And the last few weeks, everything has gone so weird. Weve been on the run, hunted, accused, damned by the press. You had to kill someone. I got myself lost in the Rogue Isles, saved by my best friend who turns out to be one of the people were meant to be fighting against. Im just confused. When did it get so complicated?
I dont know, said Derek, Its just the way it is.
Im just worried that one day someones going to find out the truth, she said quietly, That Im a little girl playing a big girls game.
Derek pulled Saffron into him and hugged her. No-one thinks that, he said. Saffron laid her head against his chest and listened to his heartbeat.
And worst of all, I almost lost you, she whispered before sleep stole over her.
((Written with Derek)) -
Well it depends on how you define 'light' RP. I can point you in the direction of the Militia who meet up every Thursday night at around 7:30 and spend a few hours missioning in character. Our in character thread is on these boards if you want to get a feel for what we're like.
Oh, and I forget, we're heroes and on the Union server.
Hope to see you around. -
The dancing lights started to fade for Derek as he came to. He was aware of a deep red light above him and of his head being cradled by someone. As he came to he saw a dark haired woman looking down at him. She seemed vaguely familiar. She was talking to a man that Derek recognised as the barman.
Did you have to hit him so hard? she was asking.
I didnt mean to, said the barman. Im a bartender, not one of you guys.
The stirring in her lap made the woman look down, giving the barman an opportunity to slink off back to his job.
Hi hun! she cried, Are you ok? You got me worried there for a second.
Saff? he said, recognising the voice, Whats with the hair?
Saffron pulled at a strand of the dark hair hanging by her face. Disguise, she said, Tara said itll wash out. Are you ok hun? Ive missed you.
Derek sat up and rubbed his head. I think so. Man, that hurt! Where have you been? Ive been going crazy looking for you.
Its a long story, but we dont have the time. We have to find the other members of the Militia, fast.
They got to their feet and embraced. As Derek held her, she relaxed into his arms.
I missed you, she whispered.
Me too, he said, I thought something had happened to you.
Im home now, she said. And Im not going anywhere. But we have to warn the others, were all in big trouble.
I know, he replied, Ive been on the run for the past week. Several of us are missing, Sabrinas about to stand trial, Lady Cobra and 29 are going to testify
Then we have to warn them now! cried Saffron, stepping backwards, Whatever happens, Sabrina must not go back into that courtroom! -
One of my mains is a sonic/energy blaster and I seem to have done ok with her so far. To be honest though, I haven't seen many mezz's going up due to any of the blasts I've been doing. Siren's is good but it's a soft hold meaning that it's great for soloing but next to useless in a team as the mezz will only last until they're attacked. One AoE from a fellow team-mate and they're back up and shooting at you again.
The benefit comes from having a few attacks for keeping the enemy at distance. Both sonic and energy have attacks that can push your opponent back to a distance where you can blast the hell out of them as they get back up. If these miss and they refuse to fly, energy has some nice melee attacks to knock them into submission. Personally, I don't play my blaster as a blapper but energy is definitely the way to go if you do.
As for other player mezz-protection, you may find there's a fair amount about. Although susceptable early on, by the time you get Siren's Song, most (sensible) players will have picked up something to prevent mezz.
That said, Sonic/Energy is a fun combination in my honest opinion. Give it a go, you might like it. -
Saffron leapt over the buildings of Mercy Island with ease. Beside her flew her friend Tara, both of them speeding towards the dock as fast as they could. Both of them could hear the sound of the approaching flyers and knew without doubt that it was them that they were coming for. Breaking and entering Arachnos property was rarely rewarded with gold stars. But what they had gleaned from their investigation would certainly be worth it.
They dived low, trying to keep undetected but they knew that it was only a matter of time before they were discovered. But it didnt matter anymore, their work here was done. They just needed to get to the dock in time.
Faster! shouted Tara, speeding ahead.
I know, I know, gasped Saffron as she leapt over the roof of a house.
A sudden explosion made them dive for cover, hiding behind a large ventilation duct. A quick look above confirmed their suspicions. The flyer scooted overhead, searchlights blazing. Saffron looked down. They only had thirty yards to go. Thirty yards to the port, and the boat that led home, back to her friends, her family and Dereks arms. But the flyer hovered in the air, blocking the way. She turned to Tara who was breathing hard, recovering her breath. For a second she appreciated what they really were, two teenage girls running from a vast military army. It was a sobering thought.
Can we take it down? she asked.
Tara looked at her as if shed proposed giving it a bunny rabbit. Are you crazy!?
Saffron shrugged. What else could they do? Give up? A stupid grin spread across Taras face. Dammit, Ive missed you Saff. Ok, you got an idea?
You think you can blind them for a little? she asked.
No problem sweetie, I hope you know what youre doing .
Saffron crawled over to the edge of the building and prepared to jump. So do I, she muttered to herself.
As the flyer moved into view, Tara took off from the rooftop and sent howling blasts of dark energy towards the machine.
Yoo hoo boys! she cried, Looking for little old me!?
The pilot barely had time to react as shadows enveloped the cockpit, blinding both himself and his crewmen. The flyer shuddered slightly as the pilot tried to bring it around and into a safe hovering position. It was then that Saffron leapt from the rooftop, shooting straight upwards to where the flyer was floating. She landed on its side, and quickly slid down. She grabbed a utility handle and clung on for dear life. Knowing that Taras shadows would not last long, she sucked in a deep breath and sung.
Saffron knew that her voice was powerful, but never before had she tested its limits. Medical equipment had shattered in attempts to measure how loud she could be, she only hoped the same would be true here. The B note that she sang reverberated around the craft, tearing at the ears of its occupants. She felt sudden bangs from within the craft as electrics short-circuited, pistons broke and support structures fractured. The huge machine quivered before it began a lazy descent towards the waters below. The massive engines spat furious sparks as the thing plummeted towards the ground.
Saffron held on tightly, looking for an opportunity to jump. As the ship passed a dirty hoarding, she leapt, bounced off of the billboard and hit the roof of a nearby building, rolling with the impact. She swiftly got up and ran to the edge to see the stricken flyer collide with the water. She allowed herself a moment of pride before turning to see Tara hovering near their ship, waving at her to get a move on.
Dont ever do that through an amp babe, said Tara smiling as Saffron landed next to her. Beside her stood the ramp up to the ship, beyond it a concerned crewman, waiting to push off.
Well talk later, said Saffron, Now weve got to go! She grabbed Taras hand and attempted to drag her onto the boat. Tara resisted, letting her hand slip from Saffrons.
I cant, was all she said.
You what? replied Saffron, taken aback.
Thats not my home anymore, said Tara. This is where I belong. Not over there in your world of rules and regulations. I need my freedom.
But! attempted Saffron but Tara was having none of it.
Look, just go already will you? said Tara, waving her away. I dont need your help, Ill be fine on my own.
Saffron said nothing. She stood on the gangway, waiting for her friend, wondering what had changed her so much that she had to run away. The last few days had been stressful, but the woman stood by her now was not the one she had known as her friend. That woman was dead. Tears welled up as she tried to say goodbye.
Thank you, was all Saffron could manage as the crewman led her up the gangway and prepared to cast off.
Yeah, well, just remember you owe me one, said Tara. Tell your buddies in Longbow to give me a break sometime. Now get lost.
The ship started to slowly pull away from the harbour, separating the two friends once more. Saffron stayed on the deck, watching the shape of her friend become a dark purple dot on the dock before disappearing from view. She wished that Derek was here to hold her. She found a quiet spot on the deck and watched the seagulls fly
-------------------------
Tara stood on the deck waiting, long after the boat had disappeared from view. She was aware of other people coming but she didnt care. She sat on the dock and watched the tide go in and out below her.
Dark Rose Tara? came an officious sounding voice from behind her.
I was wondering when you were going to turn up, she said, not bothering to look around. I guess youre going to lock me up and throw away the key.
Perhaps, said the voice. You are to be detained at his Lordships pleasure for an unspecified length of time.
Tara smiled. It was time to go home. She looked off into the distance, towards Paragon City and Saffron.
Groovy. -
Oh don't get me wrong, I have played an Empath Defender in the past and they can be great fun, running around, making sure everyone's buffed and healed. (Had TP Friend as well, made me quite popular with the Hollows crowd!) I don't deny that they're great and yes, if I'm playing a different alt that night, seeing one on the team brings a great relief. I just wish that we didn't get all tarred with the same brush.
Personally, I don't call myself a healer simply because it's not what I'm looking out for when I play my Dark Defender. I'll be watching whether the enemy's debuffed and under control, not whether any of my team-mates are dipping into the red (well ok, just a little). Therefore, I simply won't be as effective simply because my attention is focussed elsewhere. Plus, my heals and rezzes are very situational so I would prefer that people didn't rely on them.
-
I wouldn't worry about the rant, it's my most hated thing in the game too. Unfortunately, it comes with the territory. I think it's probably just hang over from fantasy games where there's a priest class or some sort who just heals.
And yes, trying to explain things like range and tohit stats to bad teams is just a waste of time. -
Hello everyone.
As Im finally tired of rolling new CoH toons, Im being lured back to CoV to explore my darker urges. As such, Im looking at creating a Dominator (possible Plant/Ice or Plant/Fire) and need to get a bit of guidance. How squishy are Dominators? Any pros and cons? And are they good to team with? (I figure theyre sort of a Controller equivalent.) And most important of all, are they fun?
Advice, recommendations, tactics, recommended guides, all would be welcomed by this newbie Dominator .
Thanks. -
Alas, this is the reason why I always state in my Defender's team search "Not a healer". (But then the people who think like this often don't read them...) Sure I have Twilight Grasp, but it's never going to be as effective as an Empath's heals. But try explaining that to a team who see the green lights going off later on.
"Y u say u not healr?"
"I have one heal, my powers lie in debuffing."
"U heal so u r healr"
Such an event leads swiftly to me leaving the team. There just seems to be a large number of players out there who don't seem to realise that some Defenders can make sure that they don't get hit in the first place so that they won't even need a healer. Sigh
I'm just hoping it gets better at later levels... -
Congratulations both of you. Nice pics.
-
Unit 29 rose slowly to his feet. He looked over at Lady Cobra.
"I concur," he stated. "I shall stand with you."
His point made, he returned to his seat. He was beginning to feel something. He wondered whether it was fear... or excitement. -
Elsewhere...
The hand connected with Taras face with extreme force. It was enough to make her take a step backwards to regain her balance. She touched her face where it hit and smiled.
Well I guess I should have seen that coming, she said wryly.
What did you expect? Ten years of lies and deceit followed by attempted kidnapping! shouted Saffron. Tara had barely had the time to get in the door.
Is that what you call it? said Tara. I call it saving your backside girl. You wanted somewhere safe so I made a judgement call given that you were all over the place. The least you can be is grateful.
But here!? cried Saffron, The Rogue Isles of all places!? How long have you been here? And why? And why did you need to lie to me about it!?
I dont need to justify myself to you, was Taras simple reply. There was work here, so I came. End of story. What of it?
The Rogue Isles? Where the main export is exortion and murder? suggested Saffron.
Ah, it aint that bad, said Tara, shrugging it off. Sure you have to put the hurt on people occasionally but how is that different to what you do?
Saffron ignored the insult. You have to get me home. My friends are in trouble and me being here is just making things worse. Why are you laughing?
Oh I dont think so sweetie, giggled Tara. I dont think youre going anywhere. Theres a price on your head. Its a pretty good bounty too, you must have cheesed off some mighty big people over there. I almost thought of turning you in myself.
The was a moment of tension between the two of them. Saffron readied herself to fight. Tara reached forward and punched her playfully on the arm.
Oh relax will you? she laughed as she walked past her. Im screwing with you. Im not going to turn you in, youre my friend for goodness sake. Jeez, when did you become so uptight?
Saffron didnt miss a beat. Since my friends started lying to me.
Tara stopped by the window. For a second, her constant laughter was absent from her voice.
Im sorry, she whispered. I did what I had to do.
Saffron said nothing. In a way, Tara was right, she had saved her. But either way, she needed to get back home.
Thank you, she said.
She would have said more but Tara turned around, an irritated look on her face. Oh shut up, she said playfully. Youd better find something to disguise that hair of yours if were going to get you home.
Saffron nodded, she knew the matter was now closed as far as Tara was concerned. As she made herself ready, a thought struck her.
So theres some sort of bounty on the Militia then? she said.
Yeah, youre all wanted by the big shots back home, said Tara. Some guy I spoke to told me about it, said there was some operative near the port who was paying big money for you lot.
Saffrons brow furrowed. But the judge just said on telly that hed only put a bounty on us if we didnt turn up for the trial tomorrow. How come theres one on us now?
Tara shrugged. Who knows, maybe hes just getting impatient. Will you get a move on?
But surely he cant do that, said Saffron, undeterred. Not if we havent even had the chance to turn up at the hearing. And besides, why there be someone looking for us over here? No-one knows Im here do they?
Not as far as I know, said her friend with impatience.
Can you take me to see this guy? asked Saffron
Sure, if you like creeps, said Tara. You think somethings up?
Yes, said Saffron, pulling on her jacket. Theres something not quite right about this -
Unit 29's synthesized voice spoke out.
"I concur," he said. "These charges do seem to be fabricated. But proving that in a court of law will be difficult. I am not one for advocating avoidance of the authorities but I do not believe that they will pursue this. We must prove our own innocence, even if it requires us to become outlaws." -
Saffron sat in front of Taras TV, watching the news through red eyes. It had been two hours since she had woken to find herself in a new world, a world of grave danger. She had paced back and forth in Taras small Clocktower apartment, trying to think of what to do. Tara had obviously brought her here for a reason but why? Her friend was absent but the door was unlocked and the balcony within easy reach. But the more Saffron thought about leaving, the worse the idea became.
Shed watched the news as reports came in of her various friends had been detained. Shed watched as Sabrina was taken to the courts and how Lady Cobra had bravely handed herself in. She suspected that she wouldnt be detained for long though. Theyd even brought that new kid Justin in, poor lad. Shed allowed herself a brief giggle as Unit 29 was brought in. Theyd had to use a large armoured lorry and a pair of iron manacles to restrain him. When he stopped and insisted on talking to the reporters, a dozen guards had tried in vain to move him inside before he had finished speaking.
Shed waited for some report about Derek but the more she waited, the more she worried. He had a temper and she just hoped that he hadnt done anything stupid. Nothing had been reported about The Portent either but she knew that he was savvy enough to keep himself hidden away. She just hoped that Force Commander didnt start looking for his answers at the bottom of a bottle.
She had to do something. But what? She had to get back home somehow. She had no doubts that being absent from the trial would go against her. There had to be some way of getting between the two states. A disguise would be a good start, she thought. She rifled through Taras cupboard, trying to find something suitable.
She looked briefly over at the window. And then, she thought, out there, to find her way home -
The motorbikes small engine screamed as it rounded the corner, its rider keeping it at a 45 degree angle. It was travelling slightly above the speed limit, but not quite fast enough to attract the attention of any nearby cops. The most important thing, Saffron reminded herself, was not to draw any attention.
She had been in a lecture when the news broke but it hadnt taken long for it to filter down to her, the whole campus was talking about it. Her immediate reaction was to run. Shed been halfway through packing a bag when she stopped to think. Shed always worn a mask. She knew how her mother would react if she knew what shed been up to so shed always hidden her true identity in case of events like this. She breathed out. There were only three people outside of the team who knew about her other career and they wouldnt sell her out. She was safe. For now.
Calm reigned for about thirty seconds until she remembered Derek strutting around proudly. Hed never worn a mask, never even taken an alias. With his background, hed be the first they went after. Saffron resumed her panic, grabbing her jacket from the door and heading down to the parking lot. She didnt notice her cell-phone lying on the dressing table with one missed call showing.
-----------------------------------------
Saffron had parked her bike up outside of Dereks apartment and forced her way in. She knew that she could have leapt to Eastgate far faster than her bike but the main priority now was to keep a low profile.
Dereks place was a mess. Hed always been untidy but this was something else, as if someone had ransacked the place. Derek was obviously long gone, smart enough to disappear the moment the news hit. Saffron was temped to cry but struggled to keep it in. She wanted to strangle Sabrina for this mess but that little troublemaker had probably gone to ground as well. She pushed thoughts of her team out of her head and concentrated on the search. A crumpled note found near the doorway indicated that Derek had gone home but she had no idea where that was.
As she left the building, she wondered where to go next. The only person whod ever had trouble with the police in the past had been Tara. She reached for her cell phone only to discover it missing. Not sure what to do, she mounted her bike and headed for the only place she could think of finding her.
She didnt notice the police cruiser sat in the nearby alleyway, watching her as she left.
--------------------------------------------
I came as soon as I saw the news, said Tara, sipping her drink. I figured youd need a hand but I would have thought you would have called first.
I think I left my phone back in my dorm, said Saffron sheepishly. Tara pulled a face that said it all.
So what now little lady? she asked. Your teams divided, wanted and hunted by the police. Your friends either on the run or locked up. Whatcha gonna do?
Saffron stared at the table. I dont know, she said after a while. I mean, we were put together by this Minister bloke. Maybe he has some answers
Sounds like a plan, said Tara, downing the remainder of her drink, but you better come up with a faster one quick.
What do you mean? said Saffron, confused.
The Amber Banshee? came a voice from behind her shoulder. Please come with us.
Saffron turned slowly in her seat. Behind her stood two men in suits. One was holding out a badge for her to look at. She swallowed hard and made to get up. It was then that she saw Tara smiling to herself. The room seemed to get darker somehow, shadows gathering around her friend.
The cops calm demeanour shattered as black tentacles erupted from the floor beneath them, wrapping themselves around the policemen, holding them fast. Saffron gasped then looked over at Tara, who was on her feet. Tara grabbed her wrist and pulled at her.
What are you waiting for girl!? RUN!
Saffron jumped up and ran with Tara towards the other end of the club. Tara waved at the barman as they approached.
Dan, emergency! she yelled. The barman stood to one side and kicked open the entrance to the cellar. The girls leapt over the bar and down the stairs into the basement. Saffron had just enough time to see the cops struggling with the dark tentacles before darkness itself consumed them both.
--------------------------------------
Saffron opened her eyes and looked around her. She was lying on a bed in a darkened room. The room was coloured in dark reds and purples, various clothes lay scattered across the floor. It did not take much to realise that she was in Taras bedroom.
As the memories of the last few hours came flooding back to her, she jumped out of the bed in a panic. She remembered running, a drop, a boat, then nothing.
She listened for any trouble but there was silence about her. There were no sirens, no stomping of feet coming to carry her off. She remembered Tara saying that she was taking her somewhere safe but that didnt make sense. She knew that Tara lived in Kings Row and certainly nowhere in Paragon City could be considered safe for her now. She opened the door to the bedroom and stepped outside.
The large room beyond seemed to hold the rest of the house. But there didnt seem to be anyone about. At the end of the room, a door led out onto a balcony. Frightened of where Tara may have led her, but deeply curious to know where she was, she opened it.
The view beyond sent shockwaves through her. The sky was coloured deep red by the setting sun, its pale light illuminating the skyline. Ramshackle houses crowded together on a ragged coastline, gathered around the gothic tower in which she stood. Looking upwards, an ancient clock kept the time while a giant courtyard sprawled out below her. And in the distance stood a fortress of steel and stone and on top of that fortress flew a familiar red and black flag. Tears ran freely down Saffrons face as she looked out over the landscape of what could only be Mercy Isle. -
Energy melee is quite good for groups as it has a reasonable chance to disorient meaning that if you get lucky, you can taunt and disorient a mob while your team-mates pick them off.
That said, I've just started an Inv/SS Tanker and Super Strength is rather fun and feels very heroic.
Good luck. -
Hi there.
I'm working on an idea for a new character (Argh, altisis strikes again!) and I need a little background info which I thought I'd like to open to the RP crowd (and others of course).
Now, we know that our characters do gain fame from their actions (hell, if forms our currency) and often passing NPCs will say something nice about us but I was wondering if anyone thought that there would be TV and other media dedicated to our antics. Just as there are magazines and so forth that scream about how a certain celebrity combed their hair this morning, does it follow that a similar cult of celebrity would spring up around our characters? Does anyone have any good examples of this already happening in game?
The long and short of it is that I'm thinking of starting someone who is a bit of a superhero fan who ends up becoming one themselves. But it'll be a bit pointless if the media that stirs up this kind of frenzy doesn't exist in Paragon City.
So, any 'fans' out there or heroes had their autograph asked for recently? Thanks. -
No explaination needed friend, that was a hell of a blow to be dealt. Hope you're ok, my condolences to all those affected.
On a brighter note, well done everyone for a very well played evening of roleplay. The tension was so tangible you could have cut it with a knife. And welcome to our newest member Nightsparrow who seemed to keep up with the craziness very well.
Looking forward to next week now...
