I agree that acknowledging that there have been more skirmishes with the Praetorians is a good thing. As the invasions are occurring in the TFs and not in the outside world, we can probably accept that there are attempts at invading going on around us but ones that get fought off by Paragons heroes. We already have precedent for the Praetorians appearing in our world from some of the random missions given out from level 45-50.
Therefore, I think itll be ok to say that invasion attempts are being made in the same way that we semi-acknowledge the Rikti when they decide to hit us with a bombing raid. Not a permanent IC event, but one that goes on in the background. Each RP TF attempt can be a character taking part in repelling the invasion but not necessarily being solely responsible for turning the tide.
As for the other side of things, I dont expect the exit from Praetoria to change. The game has our journeys from 1 50 as quite linear so to a level 20 character just leaving Praetoria, the war effort is only just building up whereas to a level 50 character about to embark on the Apex TF, the war has begun. However, as someone who finds the forced exit from Praetoria both clunky and immersion breaking, I rarely acknowledge it as an event, having my characters leave Praetoria for their own means. Certainly for my Praetorian Loyalist, when she leaves, it will be to aid the war against Primal Earth, not to fight against it.
(As a side note, I really do hope there is a chance to aid the war effort for Loyalists who have crossed over. Its kind of a shame that for a Loyalist that has crossed over, both new TFs are about repelling the invasion and not about aiding it. Im hoping the new 20-30 arcs might help that situation a little ) -
I don't like quoting entire posts so I'll just say: everything that Techbot said. With a cherry on top. Yes please. Mmmm mmm.

By now I'm about at this point with this thread:
So far all it's achieved is to show that Union roleplayers can be exceptionally petty and hold grudges for ridiculous reasons. I'm quite frankly embarrassed by this thread and wish I'd never posted in it. I'm interested in building bridges with other roleplayers on the Union server whereas others seem to be more interested in burning them down. If anyone likes the idea of bringing people together, I'm all ears.
I suggest taking further discussions to a separate thread called 'Union RP Issues' so that others can get back to discussing the original topic. But not for me.
I'll be somewhere else, having fun rather than continuing some OOC grudge match. -
Quote:I always think that's the key to running arcs IC: are they such big events that they would only happen once? If they are then I tend to generic them. Sure I've run missions like Frostfire but then it can be someone other than him. If it's an arc that pertains purely to my character such as the cloning arcs that were added in i18, then I'm less bothered about running them in character.I personally have a dislike of doing any of the more identifiable arcs IC. IMO it's one thing to IC shut down a comparatively generic drugs ring, stop a bomb plot or join Vanguard, but I feel it's a little silly when a lot of people can claim to have rescued Statesman from Praetoria (after all, I'm sure he doesn't make a habit of it and his status as Primal Earth's lead hero would be called into question if he really did have such Daphne Anne Blake tendencies!
).
Do what works for you without them impacting on other people's gameplay I say. However, I am surprised at how many people won't be treating the arcs as IC or canon for their characters. -
Amen to that.
For me, Dante will use the Incarnate powers but he already has magic outside of the game system so although he'll run the arcs semi-IC, it'll be because they're an adventure not because he needs to access the powers.
My other possibility is Karnac who although he's convinced that his powers come from exposure to the Devoured Earth, doesn't realise that they actually come from 'a greater power'. I have no problem with that tying into the Well mythology. And given that he's one of my most reluctant heroes, seeing him take on the challenge of the Incarnate arcs IC will be amusing at least.
With this, like all arcs in the game, it'll be the choice of the player as to whether they take them as relevant to their story or not and that can alter from character to character.
Ironically, the two characters that I have that would make my best Incarnates character-wise, Dragonstar and Pyralith are only just over level 30 but then all good things come to those who wait as they say. -
Quote:Perhaps that's something we could seek to change then? An open, forum based location set in the Unionverse where anyone can come and go as they please. I'd be willing to support such an idea.Of course, I can only speak of the official forums. Random forum RP for anyone to drop it isn't gonna happen on SG's own forums, is it?
Quote:The problem, again IMHO, is that many GGer do not stray outside their "safe zone". -
Quote:Depends on who you ask.Thing is, though.. Forum RP never really massively caught on in the EU side. We tend to prefer our RP live and raw, where we can react in real time to things as they happen, and not have to wait 8 hours for the other person to wake up or get home from work.
Forum RP is alive and well in the EU, it just might not happen as much on this forum much although Open Season seems to have done very well here.
I love forum RP but I do the majority of it on my own boards. I've found forum RP on these boards to move so fast I loose track, loose control and get very lost very quickly, hence why I've never been that good at it on here. However, I may be willing to try again sometime soon. -
This thread makes me sad. I've been roleplaying in CoX for about four years and I decided a while ago to take my RP off of the main forums mostly due to being told how what I was doing was 'wrong' even though it didn't break any major RP rules. So it does make me sad that the EU can be perceived as being exclusive sometimes. (And it is, occasionally.)
Quote:I find that like with most groups, it helps to know someone there beforehand who can show them around. But I'd like to think that I have enough patience to help anyone who's new to RP or even RPing in an MMO. I had some great tutors when I first came here so I do my best to repay the favour if anyone ever wants to have a go.Corrections/information related to necessary links for "how to get into the groups here" would be greatly appreciated, unfortunately, my 1st few experiances of just trying to talk at GG all those years ago didnt go down well for me, as I was just ignored when i tried to talk to people in local.... >.>
Getting stuff started for new people can sometimes be tough as veterans and old grudges can often overshadow sometimes seemingly gentle plots. Given that I'd like to meet more roleplayers from the community, I might try starting something simple up again and try to keep a better grip on it than last time. But I think I might let the dust settle on this thread first.
Folks are always welcome to pop by the Militia boards for a chatter if they like but I think I might have to start looking at some other folks' board too now. -
I'm afraid that this is a common problem that is occurring more and more since the servers moved to the US. (See the Connecting...X thread in the European lounge.) I'd like to think that they will get their techy bods looking into it but I suspect more attention is being focussed on getting i19 out of the gate while stuffed full of turkey.
There's a few tips in that thread about how to work around the updater or kick it into life, maybe one of them will work for you. -
This happens to me regularly but it has been happening more since the move to the US along with increased rubberbanding when I do get in. The flushdns trick works once in a blue moon but most of the time it's time to stick the kettle on while the downloader tries to connect. I'm trying the shortcut idea but for some reason, the route in the target box is 'invalid'. Ho hum.
I wouldn't mind so much if I hadn't of crashed out of an ITF last night and spent half an hour trying to get back on. -
It's one of the downsides of having a shared RP environment that encompasses the whole world. Whereas from what I've seen, RP on the NA servers is more 'instanced'. This happens every time a new game event unfolds such as the Rikti invasions or in this case, Incarnates and the Well returning to the world. From what I can see, some people will use the Incarnate system to justify their already existing RP abilities, others will explore the content IC. Some of my characters will do both.
And as far as I'm concerned, I don't give two hoots about who's an Incarnate and who's not. If Incarnate is just another origin along with the current five, then consider how often that matter comes up in regular RP. I don't think I've ever had an RP conversation when the category of our origin or AT or enhancement sets came into play.
I'm just sad that what started as a friendly discussion about how people with RP Incarnates has turned into another bunfight, so for what it's worth OP, sorry. -
Quote:As others have said, not until i19 goes live. And second, can you get into praetoria yet without starting as a praetorian?
Our Tuesday night group is for a bunch of Loyalist characters who we're occasionally level locking so that we can experience all of the story arcs there.
And yes, Militia, Cadre and the Praetorian team (Precinct 7) are all separate but the same players may have characters in all of them and there is some occasional cross over. I'm currently working on a head on clash between the Militia and the Cadre. -

Quote:Far be it from me to contest the wisdom of Shadowe but I'm not sure this tallies well with what we've got in game already. Here's are some notes from Ashley McKnight:Incarnate is a label to describe extreme cases of a particular Origin. Nothing more.
Quote:McKnight also notes that Imperious, the man you're supposed to contact, comes from an origin that has been completely absent for some time. That of the Incarnate.
Quote:You know, in the history books of the Midnighters there is talk of a time when a single origin commanded all the power. There was factioning within the origin, similar to what we're seeing with mutants now. I've read about a battle and a group of warriors who traveled to another plane to unleash an event or a creature, the translation isn't that good. At the end of the day, there was the balance that we now have amongst the origins. Granted, I think there were some different origins back then and a few of the ones we have now weren't around, but it was balanced just the same.
And although you're right about 'incarnate' being an adjective, we do have an example of it being used as a noun in CoX such as:
Blood of the Incarnate - A vial of blood from a recipient of the power of the Well of the Furies.
Now I haven't tested Ramiel's arc, mainly because we've got a character copy tool that falls over if anyone farts too hard next to it so I'm just using what we've got at the moment to form a view. And to be honest, there's a metric tonne of assumption involved with what we're discussing and until we've got all the information on the origin of the powers, what an Incarnate really is and what it means for our characters, I'm beginning to think it's pointless to carry on.
As far as I'm concerned, the only real thing to remember is that the Well has become part of current game lore and that some people will now hold Incarnate levels of power (if they didn't already through RP means). As for how they resolve it or what my characters think of them, that's up to the individuals concerned to decide.
And don't worry Amerikatt, I don't think anyone reads my posts either. People are far more interested in winning some OOC bunfight. -
Quote:Hence my point about beliefs earlier. Anyway, I think I'm done with this discussion for now. At least until some folks go and cool off a bit. A shame as it was all rather interesting.I'm hesitant to even go near this discussion right now, but... is it really a problem if people say this IC? Characters are entitled to believe whatever silly nonsense they want, right?

Welcome back.
The Militia is a hero group that has been running for about 4 years now and we currently run three themed nights: a weekly Praetorian group on Tuesdays and either Militia (hero) or Cadre (rogue) every other week.
We're not huge or uber but we're friendly and active so if you want to stop by and say hello, check out the forum linked in my signature. Feel free to join our channel (Militia) in game which is active most evenings.
Hope to see you around some time. -
Quote:Unionites. We like things to tie up. Happens every time something new comes out.M'kay, at first this was just someone's curiosity, but now that it's mutated into this, I have to wonder: is it really that important to explain IC why/where/how your character got more powerful in-game? Do you do the same when you slot new enhancements? Mind yalls, everyone's free to do what they want, but it seems needlessly complicated to me.
-
Without wanting to move the discussion into dodgy territory but the question over whether a character believes another person to be an Incarnate or not reminds me a lot of when deists see the hand of some other almighty power at work, whether that person believes it or not. The Well is clearly doing something and some people will believe that, others won't.
IIRC, Stephan Richter was always skeptical about the Well and after his exposure to it, went on to try and create the perfect technology based society. I don't think he ever once acknowledged that his new insights and abilities were based on some magic mumbo jumbo. So inevitably, the mad scientist that comes up with a way to create an orbital cannon is unlikely to think that maybe some mystical well is manipulating him. He'll just figure he got lucky or his own incredible genius led him to it. Whereas those who know of an 'believe' in the Well could point at his achievements and cry "Ah ha! Incarnate!" (At which point they'd probably get a funny look from the scientist before being incinerated by said orbital array.)
In short, people will RP the Incarnate powers however the hell they like. We already twist and bend game lore all over the place (as is our want). My demon character doesn't use Radiation Emission, it's recoloured to be spells and curses for her. Likewise none of my magic users call on the entities named on the SO enhancements. What counts is the character, game mechanics be damned.
The only thing we need to be aware of is that the Well is now entering current game lore and so people will talk about it, just as conversations turned to Praetoria when Going Rogue launched. Whether people seek the Well IC or just find new ways to explore their powers (as I've already said I will be) is entirely up to them. Whether they're Incarnate or not is about as important as what the Origin above their head says. -
Quote:Tricky question. One has to bear in mind that it is possible to best some of the current Incarnates in game without being an Incarnate yourself e.g. fighting Recluse or Statesman. I dont think being an Incarnate is a sudden I win button, it just means theyre just a little bit trickier than the next most powerful foe. If we wanted to be arbitrary about it, some characters have been able to solo AVs and GMs without needing the Incarnate system, just some superb builds. Is it then fair to demand that Billy's player find a way to make Billy more powerful than Jimmy, to justify the Billy's status as a true Incarnate? Or in this case, is Jimmy's player at fault for "misusing" the incarnate system? Or, are we going to establish that the much-vaunted power of the Incarnates is nothing more than can be achieved through extra training or a technology upgrade?
The game plays fast and loose with these kind of rules and the existence of sidekicking kind of destroys any pretence of realism in this respect. If I wanted to, I could sidekick a level 1 character to my level 50 and go take down a GM. The sidekick would still get the badge merely because they were sidekicked to me, regardless of whether they could even hit them or not IC. This is one of the reasons I dont like to focus on game mechanics too much.
As for RP characters as weaker, one of my 50s is a young lady with a powerful voice. And although shes carved holes in Rikti ships and shattered landscapes with it, in all other respects, she remains a normal human. If she was involved in an RP fight where some martial artist punched her in the throat, she would be almost powerless and easily subdued. So although I dont have to RP her as weaker as per your example, I can still be aware of her capabilities and RP accordingly.
And finally, as has been said both in this thread and in game, the Incarnate path is just one route to power. The Well contains the essence of human potential of all kinds so although Billy may have encountered the Well IC, I dont see why his friend could have unknowingly embraced its power through sheer willpower and focus. Just my two pennyworth. -
Quote:I completely agree. I much prefer regular people who become empowered and so I only have a few real world saving, 'classic style' superheroes.A number of my alts are played as street level heroes rather than the world saving sort, so there is no place for an IC incarnate event with out totally changing the characters nature.
Having the powers of a god are going to be massive overkill for keeping the streets of King's Row safe. -
It's not odd of you, I'm not keen on overpowered characters either. However, there is a big difference between being overpowered and having abilities that don't fit the game engine. Still, I think that issue has been debated to death on this forum already.
-
I hate the word 'reboot'. It's becoming synonymous with 'utter crap'. So I can only have one response to this news:
-
Quote:I get this but as FFM says, it's not unusual for roleplayers to want to do the new shiny and use RP to justify it. We've been roleplaying characters of Incarnate and cosmic levels of power for ages anyway, why let the game dictate our real power level? For me, Dante's already outside of the game framework with his abilities, the Incarnate content will just be another adventure for him. It's just that all this incarnate stuff is rubbing me a bit the wrong way, it comes out and all of a sudden everyones characer are going on simultanious uests or whatever to gain power.
Whats wrong with the IC power level we had before? I just don't get why everyones suddenly decided to make all thier characters that much more powerful... -
Weve been discussing the Incarnate issue over on the Militia boards for a while and the conclusion Ive come to is that there are some characters for whom Incarnate-hood just does not suit. I feel that for a few of my characters, even though they are at their peak at level 50, theyre simply not power hungry enough to seek more. That said, if all of their foes started becoming that powerful well, thats another issue.
One thought to consider though is whether this power will come at a price for some of our characters? Although player Incarnates are different to NPC Incarnates, I wonder what conditions the arc will try to place on people (not that Ill pay them much attention mind you). For example, Statesman seems to have a bad case of immortality thanks to his brush with the Well, not necessarily always a good thing. And as for Recluse, Im not sure I fancy the spider legs (although a spare arm might be handy occasionally ).
To my mind, roleplayers have already pushed the boundaries of the level cap with sometimes incredibly powerful IC abilities that would be game breaking if in game. So I dont see the inclusion of a game related way of expressing that as necessarily being a next step. Dante has always used his arcane arts in ways that step outside of game boundaries so the pursuit of the Alpha Slot will simply be him investigating new magics but not necessarily ones that make him more powerful. All that will change for him will be that there will be more situations that require him to call on more extreme magics than before.
As a heads up, there will inevitably be an increase in the demand for high level TFs being run as a means to shard gathering and Im currently working on an IC idea to pull together some of these individuals in their quest for power. More details to follow soon.
Oh and as a side note for those who dont like the mystic mumbo-jumbo side of Incarnates, one could always look at Stephan Richters response to his exposure to the Well. He never believed in the deity/magic side of it, seeing it more as a form of advanced power that unlocked human creativity and inspiration. -
Cute wins over Hot any day for me. But then I'm the guy who watched The Truth About Cats and Dogs and wanted to date Janeane Garofalo right from the off. Hey ho.
Looks like fun although it seems like more of a straight up comedy film rather than The Princess Bride which had more romance in it. (Fred Savage was right, it is a 'kissing book'). Can't see the comparison to Blackadder at all though.
I'll have to add it to the list of films to see next year.
