  1. Is there anything in that data folder? (silly question, I know, but you'd be surprised...)

You should put that data folder in whichever spot has the most files (between either City of Heroes or coh).
  2. I'm using vidiotmaps and I don't get any hangs because of it.

Any errors in the Console log?

Also, try throwing out ALL the preferences. There's both a cache and a user settings database, if they get out of sync that might cause additional problems.
  3. Those directions had an error in them. The missing step was:

    - Locate the section (in info.plist) that looks like this:

    <key>PrefsFolderName</key>
    <string>City of Heroes Training Room</string>

    And change it to this:

    <key>PrefsFolderName</key>
    <string>City of Heroes</string>

Failing to do that can possibly corrupt the Training Room preferences at a future patch, and it can also cause support confusion if something goes wrong.

I edited and fixed the original post as well.
  4. Hmm...

In the post I linked to above, did you follow the instructions for modifying and using the Training Room client (in the quoted section)?

EDIT: Re-read the post linked above - I found an error in NCSoft Support's instructions. I'm going to ask them to correct it - but in the mean time, my instructions work properly.
  5. This is a new one then - send a support request to help.ncsoft.com.

Otherwise, any messages in the Console log (Applications > Utilities > Console) right after you start the Mac client?
  6. Your issue I believe is the same as this one, only with different symptoms:

    http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=222794

Read the above, follow the instructions again, and also send a support request to help.ncsoft.com so it can be tracked.
  7. If you're using Intel GMA950 those shader options will always be missing.

Otherwise, there's a random bug which causes Cider to detect video settings improperly and then cache those settings. You may have been unlucky enough to be hit twice in a row.

Possibly the screen resolution is set larger than your screen's available resolution. I'm still just guessing at this point, probably Support will know more than I do.

In Windowed Mode that's normal, unless you set the game's screen resolution smaller than the actual screen size. The missing chunk at the bottom makes up for the menu bar and application window bar being visible.
  10. It's here:

    Q. The Patch Servers are down, I'm up to "Connecting 20…" with no relief. Can I get around it like Windows users can?

    A. Yes, but only if you're patched up to date, otherwise you'll get an error when you log in.

    1. Open Terminal located in Applications > Utilities.
    2. Type one of the two following commands:

If your City of Heroes data files are located in City Of Heroes.app > Contents > Resources > transgaming > Program Files > City of Heroes:

    /Applications/City\ of\ Heroes.app/Contents/MacOS/cider -- cityofheroes.exe -project oh

If your City of Heroes data files are located in City Of Heroes.app > Contents > Resources > transgaming > coh:

    /Applications/City\ of\ Heroes.app/Contents/MacOS/cider -- cityofheroes.exe -project coh

Hmm...I'm not sure, I haven't seen this particular issue, so I'm just guessing.

Is 3D Resolution Scaling in the game Graphics and Audio settings set to the same as Screen/UI Resolution?

EDIT: If that doesn't work, contact support at help.ncsoft.com - they might know something I don't.

Is this the chat window? I found that sometimes if it's an odd size it'll do that - making it bigger or smaller fixes the problem.

I believe that's covered in my guide.
  14. I'll test that later tonight and see if there's a larger problem.
  15. Follow the instructions here and see if it makes a difference for you:

    http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showp...6&postcount=25
  16. Which newest model? The 2010 one or the late-2009?
  17. That's still consistent with the graphics corruption I experienced in testing - you'll have to throw out the preferences at Users > (yourname) > Library > Preferences > City of Heroes Preferences and then restart the Mac before running CoH again. Then, at the CoH patcher, check the Safe Mode box when you see the license agreement. Change your settings, and start the game again.

If that doesn't work, try this (copied from YBNormal's post so it's stickied):

OK I finally got a fix for this situation from tech support. Here is what they said to do. I had to still open it in safe mode the first time and change my graphics setting, but it loads every time after that. I also didn't have to edit the info.plist file as those lines weren't present.

Please download the City of Heroes Test client and check to see if it has the same issue. The test client can be found at http://download.cityofheroes.com/Tes..._Server_US.dmg

If the test client works properly, please try the following:

    1. Move the "City of Heroes.app" file from /Applications and "City of Heroes Preferences" from ~/Library/Preferences/ to the Trash.

    2. Control-click on "City of Heroes Test.app" and choose "Duplicate". Rename the new copy to "City of Heroes.app"

    3. Control-click on the new "City of Heroes.app" and choose "Show package contents".

    4. Open Contents.

Now, I would like you to modify the info.plist file that is located in the Contents folder and remove the following lines:
    <key>CiderGameOptions</key>
    <string>-- cohupdater.exe -test</string>

    5. Close and save the file. Then check for the issue again.

*make sure you check safe mode the first time you run it and change your graphics settings there or it will just give you the black screen. If you forget to, then just delete your preference file again and launch it again in safe mode.*
EDIT: There is an ERROR in the instructions above from NCSoft Support. They forgot this very important step:

    - Locate the section that looks like this:

    <key>PrefsFolderName</key>
    <string>City of Heroes Training Room</string>

    And change it to this:

    <key>PrefsFolderName</key>
    <string>City of Heroes</string>

Failing to do that can possibly corrupt the Training Room preferences at a future patch, and it can also cause support confusion if something goes wrong.

As for the heat issues, try removing the cooling pad to see if the temperature changes. Those often cause more problems than they solve. If it's still way too hot, see if an Apple Store's Genius Bar can test it and make sure it's within normal range.

I haven't seen these - what kind of Mac and video card do you have?

There is also a random graphics corruption issue with ATI cards, nvidia 8600, and nvidia 9600 that could be causing it.
  19. I believe Ultra Mode is available on nearly all Mac models that are supported by the Mac client (with the exception of the Intel integrated graphics, which doesn't have hardware support for some of the features). But like anything, just because you can doesn't mean you should - the average middle-level iMac does best with some of the settings reduced.

I'm using the following settings on my Macbook Pro:

FSAA: Off (uses a lot of CPU for the effect)
    Shadow Mode: Shadow Maps/High
Environmental Reflections: Low (I don't see an extraordinary difference)
Water Effects: High (not Ultra - one tick below)
    Ambient Occlusion: Off (personal choice)

Usually I get around 20-25 fps on the Macbook Pro at 1440x900. But I get only 30 on my desktop PC, which has identical settings except FSAA is set to 4x. Both have world/character detail set to 100%.

So don't feel bad if you can't crank all the settings as high as they can go. Ultra Mode was built with the future in mind, so there are very few PC's or Macs with the power to run all the effects at once.

In short, I think either iMac will do fine, the bigger one is just more powerful, so it won't become obsolete as quickly.

Is it just downloading the updates for CoH, and will take awhile for me to see anything on the screen?

    I'm running Mac OS X V10.6.3
If you mean *absolutely nothing* (if it was downloading updates you'd see the download progress) follow these instructions:

  21. No need, the #1 cause of game lag, download speed problems, etc is the internet connection. It's pretty common.

    mouse troubles

Open System Preferences and go to Universal Access. Make sure all the features related to Mouse and Trackpad are turned OFF.
