When I test for ping locally (less than 100 miles) I get 18 and when I test my ping out to Virginia where the CoH east coast servers are I repeatedly get

***wonders why he was just lit on fire by Wassy*** Ooch! Ow! Ow! Hey what gives?!
Ya but seriously IB do you really want to tell people you were a FArt runner up?
It will sound more like a mishap you had during a marathon than a prestigious art award.
"Well you see I would've been the FArt Champion but then this other contestant just "blew" right past me and really pulled it out in the end..."
(the above may or may not have been something Shia allegedly said possibly in a round-about way regarding the Foo... or it may be something I just made up a second ago to amuse myself)
Speaking of which since this is a new year and a new contest with new rules
(I'm liking the hot chick rule) and a new host (thx Wassy for signing on)
will there be a 2nd and 3rd place or runners up? or even honorable mention?
I'm happy either way just a thought.

I went back through and read them all as well.
There were some really good ones in there. The Halloween one I think was my favorite so far...
"Oh look a huge mob I attack em all... hey why dey all attack meh... werez mah healz... stipood healerz...."
"Ha Ha so your a blaster"
lol.

Nice artz there Kat. Looks like someone is about to get spanked?
As for RedFire, nice chap and he means well but he only speaks French (if I remember right) and the translator gives him trouble sometimes.
He could be trying to say auto as in automatic and it spit out car perhaps?

Cool! Nice sketch Znrgy.
Three things quick
1. You should pick a category you are drawing for (there are quite a few this could work for so you should have no problem with this).
2. You get to pick a new category going forward for other people to try out (keeps the thread going).
3. Don't worry about being too lazy to ink... there is no inking in the hot pencil... it's a quick sketch thread for pencil drawings.
Give the original post a quick read if ya like and that will catch ya up.
The sketch is looking good, now just pick out a new category for the rest of us to try and welcome to the Hot Pencil.

Seems a fairly straightforward inquiry.
Quote:Allowing only digital art may not make sense but the question is reasonable enough...
Since I've been watching the contest, and probably since CR has, all submissions have been works done digitally. CR, on the other hand, so far only uses traditional medium - pencil and paper and such. So it's totally reasonable that he'd want to know if he could enter or not...
Of course the point may be that all entries are posted online and are thus "digital" in that sense... But generally when medium restrictions are put on art it's the medium created in, not the medium presented in ..
And sorry if I'm stating the obvious... I'm stuck at work and a bit bored
everyone gets my meaning then ya your totally stating the (well to me it's) obvious... what were you thinking???
Thanks buddy.
Quote:Any art is acceptable! We had a suncatcher last year, for goodness' sake ^.^
The point of the battle is to best encompass the theme given. If you can do that with anything from graphic design, to oil paints, to macaroni and glue, go for it!
There will be ONE month where the theme itself will be using a certain medium... but believe me, you guys will have fun with it =)
I'm well prepared to put up the theme, but Foo is supposed to be getting me some sample arts. I was just waiting on that. But if you guys want the January theme before January, I'm all set on my end.
I couldn't remember the circumstances surrounding them though (if those were specialized themes allowing for that or if any medium was allowed any month) and most pieces I saw were digital so yeah I did have some trepidation being a mostly traditional artist in what seems a predominantly digital art competition.
Quote:I really hope that CR can enter - I'd love to see what he comes with.

For Fenian I see her doing the Jacobs Ladder from the Electric pool at the point before the blast when both hands are covered in electricity and the body is leaning back in an almost defensive pose like this
For Alpha I see him delivering an Incandescent Strike (PB powerset) to and uncooperative informant that may have a lead to who killed his wife. If you were to have just him in the shot it could be him at the Apex of the jump which would look cool in and of itself like this
Or if you wanted to have another figure then show the point of impact and have the informant go flailing (yay ragdoll physics) like this
For Caemgen I see him trying to learn more about how he came to be a demon born of normal parents with no seeming mutation occurring by studying those that seek to bring demons into the world, namely the Circle of Thorns. He would be in the Hollows perched on one of those floating stones near the ritual site looking down on the Mages something like this.
Or a more dramatic alternative would be to have the same shot but with the camera in the center of a ritual and up in the distance over the shoulder of one of the acolytes you see Caemgen crouched on one of the stones looking down with an inscrutable expression like he is deciding to wait and see what happens or break up the ritual (and some heads).

Here is a sample of mine.
The chart below shows my last five runs with the green arrows for down and red arrows for up speed.
Hey Arcanaville how did you test the latency to the CoH server? Is there an ingame command for that?
Edit: @ Pyro: Use what is closest to you for a best case scenario I imagine but try any/all of them if you like.
Just for the heck of it I tried a server that is as far away as I could find and got 11,543 Down 964 Up and 16ms latency.
Edit: @Arcanaville: I ran without V-sync and all settings maxed (excepting the ATI water bug which can't be helped until they patch it) and I shipped it the same way so it should still be off... can you take a look Pyro and confirm that? Also I happen to have the exact same model monitor (it's my back up screen) that Pyro does here and the same resolution and digital connection options as he should have at his house.
I do not see any shearing or visual artifacts (and I am very picky about visual quality) here with V-sync off but if you notice anything like that Pyro by all means take a tip from Arcanaville and turn V-sync back on.

I can give a partial answer but networking is not my area of expertise. I can set them up and even optimize them with custom router firmware upgrades and various registry edits but I am usually following what someone else has done and not knowing the meaning of every listed setting and how it relates to the others.
As for the FPS it is a combination of many factors but primarily it deals with how fast you are connecting to their server and how fast your PC can draw frames to your monitor.
30 fps (or thirty image draws for every second) is considered the minimum for a good gaming experience.
60 fps is generally the goal for totally smooth with no lag ever occurring.
A fast connection coupled with a fast PC and a properly configured router/system will get you smooth gaming at all times.
Somethings to consider:
If you put a fast PC on a slow internet connection (say dialup) you will get lag.
Also if you put a slow PC on a fast connection you will also get lag.
So it follows that two different computers on the same internet connection can have dramatically different FPS.
Also the same PC (moved to another house) will have different FPS readings when on different connections.
The FPS number IS dynamic (i.e it changes in real time) in response to your connection, what settings the game is using (low med high or maxed) and what is on the screen that it must draw at that moment so you want to look for an average. Is it always at or around 60fps at your house? or does it range from 60fps to 120fps?
***Your listed speed in that connection box is NOT a dynamic number (i.e. it will always show 1.0Gbps no matter what you are doing) and only shows what the maximum possible is.***
If you want a more realistic number for what your connection speed is google bandwidth test. DSL Reports has a good one and also SpeakEasy is good too. Run a few and take an average. For a reference I am getting 16752kbps Download and 1024kbps Up and 13ms latency on average.
So what to take from all this?
In a best case scenario you want to have nothing being the "weak link" in the chain. You want a fast PC hooked up to a properly configured router on a fast internet connection for the best possible result and if you are seeing 60 and above while gaming you are fine. If it were to frequently drop below 30 I would say something was definitely not right with the connection or the router or some other variable, the PC I know is fast enough to run with as much bandwidth as you can give it.

Which raises the question will this be tablet/digital art only allowed?

Tunes in...
Any chance of some NightWish (Everdream) or some Zombie (Pu$$y Liquor or ThunderKiss65)?

Quote:Heh yeah, well to be fair, you are pointing at two of my most favoritest-est things in the whole wide worldz...Dohoho, I see what you did there.
Oh yeah, I totally forgot! I think that's SO cool of you to do that for him!He definitely seemed to like it all, and I'm very happy about that.
Of course I am referring to the "City of " logo and the color red...
(like what else were you thinking and stuffz?)
Yeah the custom edition videocard turned out great. I may even do one for myself... if someone ever gets around to my commissions... ahem.
Quote:*gawps at the t-shirt* Okay, that's it, you're entirely too lucky *plots to steal your powers*
P.S. Hey you responded like within a day of my post I thought you like never go outside your thread and stuffz... oh wait this is your thread...
...that explains it.

Great job on the sketch Scooter! Im really liking how it came out.
I was actually going to "tag" you next and draw your avatar to encourage you to post a quick sketch but ya beat to it... that and your avatar won't sit still long enough for me to draw her.
Yeah on the whole time thing for me personally the hardest ones to keep close to 5 minutes are the busts (not those busts the head and shoulder kind) or portrait types.
I think everyone that has tried a closeup face has gone over the 5 min by far even in other categories, whether it be Caem's DN or Grey's or Starwinds Catgurls it's probably the hardest to make yourself stop on, especially when it's going good and you think to yourself if I only had a few more minutes. Crestent is the only face sketch where I got close to 5 min on (if you subtract time for the lettering) but much of his face is covered and his hair is light and so didn't need much line work to show it.
Yeah my desire to see a face come out "right" always seems to win out (whether I'm consciously aware of it or not) over sticking to the time limit. So I'm kinda to the point where I try and keep it close to 10 min for a face and close to 5 for everything else but I do still force myself to keep the pencil moving fast as I can at all times, which is also hard to do on a face where I want to frequently stop and stare at it for a moment and "plan" my next lines, in the spirit of quick sketch.

Just checking in briefly here, I'll have more time to post stuff tomorrow but yeah I had started planning this out back when I was looking at a windowed case for Pyro or even a reverse btx style case, where the motherboard is upside down and so the videocard graphic is visible through the window. It ended up going in a different direction but I decided to see it through because I knew Pyro would still appreciate it and it was good practice for me that I can carry on into other builds.
I'm always looking at ways to add creative touches to make my builds stand out more and really make an lasting impression on the recipient. The ultimate goal for me would be to combine my artistic ability with my pc building skill and do custom paintjobs and even laser cuts like the Dragon case... this is a step in that direction.
Hope everyone had a great Christmas with family, friends and many shiny presents.
-
Very nice sketch Temperus.
Nothing like cool artz to spread holiday cheer I say.
P.S. Sorry to hear bout the videocard, but hey look on the bright side,
assuming you have a PCI-E slot (as opposed to AGP) and that your
powersupply can handle it, this is a great time to be upgrading.
-
Merry Christmas Cashoo!
Nice present ya got there I'm jealous of people who have those,
thanks for pointing them out...
wish I had two of em...
uhhh the shirts that is... two of the CoH shirts ya know,
one Hero and one Villain (ok maybe two hero)... Ahem.
Thanks again for letting me use your design to customize Pyro's video card... I think he likes it.
Love the Santa hat too, Happy Holidays,
Christopher Robin
P.S. Holy mountain of hair care products... do they send you your
very own stylist when you order in bulk like that?
P.P.S. I totally beat Caemgen to da punch wit da innuendo nyah nyah lol
-
Well I'm off then to go visit with family, not sure if there will be a pc I can use to check in there or not so just in case you see no orange text until after... take care everyone and thanks for following along, have a safe and Merry Christmas.
-
That's a great piece Wassy.
Lovely expression on her face and her hand gesture is well done too.
Kinda looks like she and the reindeer are in one of those globes that you shake up to make it snow inside.
-
Kheldarn, did you already try the "verify all files" routine and failing that use a system restore point to go back before the winter event patch and try running it again (make sure to close any other unnecessary apps while updating).
-
Oh yeah that's Atlas lol. Nice one.
I was staring at it going why is the bag of presents round like that hah.
-
Well you can still use your new PC tonight even if you just can't go online with just yet. And you know
you will be ready when your parents do arrive tomorrow rather than having to wait until the day after Christmas.
You sure you don't have any ethernet tucked away in a box (like the one your ISP gives you) somewhere?
P.S. Sent you a PM with some pics you can post up tonight if you like otherwise we can all wait until tomorrow.
P.P.S. You should be up and running as soon as you have a cable to plug it in... that is one of the things Win7 excels at
is getting a network setup. Often times it will just do it all for you and by the time you get back up from plugging in the cable
and sit in front of the screen you're already online. If for some reason there is a problem it will troubleshoot and tell you exactly
what to do to fix it... it's way better than older Operating Systems at fixing stuff.
-
If this doesn't get you in the holiday spirit I don't know what will. lol
