Hey Psygon, great work on your recent batch of cutes, Pyro Nypho's came out great
and so did Twilight Snow's and Raelith... Arbiter Fabulous' is hilarious heh.
You should probably go take a peek at my "Thank you Artz" thread. -
I was thinking the other day wow there sure are a lot of cutes running around on the forums here someone really
outta do something about that.So I thought I would take a crack at the queen of "cute-ification" herself Psygon!
Still a WIP the hands and cape still need cleaning up and more definition work but I'm pretty pleased with the face so far.
Hope she likes it.
Note: Her "cute" avatar has the two ponytails so I guessed that it would be closest to the "Feisty"
hair style but the references I received a bit after I started this had 3 different hair styles but none
of them were Feisty... did I guess wrong?
Also I took some license with cape clasp it was supposed to be an oval but I kept seeing the letter
P for some reason so I drew it in, it can easily be removed if she doesn't care for it though.
Psygon has the horizontal stripe face paint as a mask it will be darker when I get a better photo of it.
Also a bit hard to see cuz of the flash but that is the "thorn pattern" for the chest design. -
Some nice stuffz bro, keep it coming!
Oh and welcome to the art (best part) section of the forums.
-
Who would've thunk it that with a theme of tragedy that I would be laughing so hard at this stuff.
--------------------------------------------
The Foo:
I guess that ******* Phipps got his "just deserts" --bah dum dum' tish--
Ok bad pun of the week out of the way now on to the artz.
When I read your post of...
"I want to pinpoint the exact second that turn is made, the straw breaking the camel's back,
and commit that to an image of such unrivalled, heart-rending sorrow that it leaves you all feeling
hollowed out." ...I knew it would be good, but I was unprepared for the colossal cone fail. This piece
actually made me laugh aloud so nice work on capturing "the look" of the moment Phipps snapped inside.
The top down look works well in that I felt was looking down on him as he silently curses the
heavens. Also his pose helps to convey all the right things, from his feet being planted so close
together and stiff arms, to his arrow-straight tie and clenched fist, he looks very straight-laced
and wound up tight... like all it would take is one more teeny little thing to go wrong and there
would be hell to pay for decades to come.
What was (literally) missing for me here was the ground. Almost anything would have sufficed
but there are things that could've added even more to his suffering (and thusly the tragic/comedic
punch) like him walking up to his parked junker of a car only to find a parking ticket or a brick
thrown through the front windshield or graffiti on hood telling him to "have a nice day a-hole"
(or all three + the hellions set it on fire) or if he doesn't have a car (don't know his back story
that well) a cloud of pigeons crapped all over the seat of his bike or just a bike lock lying on the
ground where his bike should be etc etc. Even just a grimy street corner or a sewer grate for his
ice cream to splat onto would be better than nothing.
The other concern with having nothing is that it makes the perspective a bit trickier to get right...
with no ground for frame of reference the eye tends to define air space by whatever else is available
and for me I see a line going through where his belt is and another going across the front of his
shoes and the gap between those two lines as the "airspace" between where he is holding his ice
cream cone and the ground. Since a part of the "splat" falls into that space it makes the ice
cream look like its hovering about knee-height and has yet to hit ground.
What you have given us here Foo is real good (his expression is classic lol) I think you just needed
to take it a little further to make it truly epic.
I only feel mostly-hollowed.
------------------------------------------
Toxic Shia:
Very well done Shia. I am glad you took the time to submit another piece... your
first one while chuckle-worthy didn't really feel tragic to me. Also the misspelling of Zeus
(twice) and the suspiciously phallic zipper in panel two thrown weren't helping the tragedy
factor any >o.0<... fine for a quickie joke but not up to your usual high standards.
Your second piece however gets it right and really has it all... comedy, tragedy and irony all rolled
up into one plus all the great little details that really make me enjoy looking at your stuff to find
"teh hidden funnehz." I found myself laughing then going awww then laughing some more then
noticing the irony of the situation... then cracking up over another hidden gag... GREAT STUFF!
***Spoiler Alert*** If you want to pore over his piece and look for the stuff yourself then skip the
rest of my review. I wrote it as small as possible and in grey to make it hard to read on purpose
for this reason... if you don't mind then you can left click and drag your mose over the below
text to highlight it and make it easily readable again.
From the "Sony" subwoofer (well he is made of junk after all lol) mounted on his shoulder
and the X-box controller hanging from his wrist down to the 70's style rotary telephone soldered
onto his butt... lol all he needs now are some fuzzy dice hahaha. Not to mention the hamsterwheel
"powering" his kneecap and what appears to be a yin/yang in his elbow. It's also funny to me that in
Clock King's "what I desire" thought bubble Penny's eye stalks have eyelashes (all the better for
her brain to wink at his lol) and there's a strand of her hair riveted to the outside of the braincase
while in her thought bubble is a superstud with all the "hearts" seemingly centered on his package hahaha.
Even funnier, since they are both powerful psychics and can read what the other is thinking,
they are not just thinking wistfully to themselves... they are actually "talking" to one another
heh. It's like he's saying to her "I will love you for your mind and her response is "yeah that's
really sweet clocky but I like a big *$#!$*"
The use of a photo background is understandable given how little time he had left and it actually blends in
fairly well... I'm curious though where that shot is from, the style of buildings kind of suggests a European
city and Essen House is German (eating house or restaurant) but it could be anywhere I suppose?
-----------------------------------------
Aprosaath:
I'm hesitant to say to much on this one since it's still a WIP and I would just be speculating.
That said I will comment on a few things I gather are fore the most part "done."
I like where this piece is going and I was able to get "Mom finds daughters broken body under
a car" without yet having read the caption text (did read the note though). Although in retrospect
it could, I suppose, just as easily have been "Daughter finds mom's broken body under a car" making
the scene a depiction of the "what he did to you" referenced in the note vs. the note describing events
that led up to the scene.
What you got right though was that the injured (dead?) hero under the car "looks" younger
and more likely to be Little Belle from her size to the miniskirt outfit. What would have really
made it a definite thing rather than an educated guess would be the wording of the note. Some
part of it should indicate that "what he did" (which could mean anything) to the mom didn't include
killing her with a car. Something like "I won't let him get away with all the suffering he put you through"
might work... you get the idea (or maybe you don't and I'm just rambling cuz it's 4am and I'm half awake lol).
The other thing that jumps out at me is the hand seems to be floating and not bearing the weight
of the car. It's kinda like doing fingertip push ups where you don't let your palm touch the ground...
same way here with her fingers only slightly curled it looks like she is fingertip pressing the car rather
than whole-hand lifting it. Her fingers should either curl all the way around to show they are gripping
the car or they should be completely flattened by the weight of the vehicle so the palm looks like
its making even contact with the underside. Other things would be perhaps round off moms chin a bit
and maybe a tear running down her cheek from under the visor. Just suggestions though and I hope you
complete it and share the finished piece with us.
-----------------------
Well I think the most tragic think here is Aprosaath's use of Vista (I build and repair computers... had to be said)
but since I can't vote for that my vote goes to Shia for taking the time and really pulling out a great piece even
though he could've coasted by with immunity this month.
Sidenote: Had Shia gone with his first submission I would've probably voted for Foo.
P.S. Great piece you have there Tigerz, that's some really sharp pencilwork, I'd love to see it finished...
oh and TA get well soon bro.
P.P.S. Anyone know what happened to LD???
I was really looking forward to seeing what great art would come up with for this theme.
-
American Samoa and Eritrea
P.S. Out of curiousity why use the CIA?
Was the NSA or FBI factbook down?
-
Afraid this might exclude me as I only play blueside. Never got a level 50, or
heck anything above level 10 for that matter, redside.
If it's Co-op, AE, or Hero-side though count me in.

Quote:Just quote someone who has a linked word in their post... like this one,Well lets say {} is [] then it would be {url="site"}text
...hmm... im still missing something...
anyway.. tyvm for the comment
and you can easily see the syntax used.
P.S. Nice sketch, gonna ink or color it? -
Very nice work on the Masked Shrike, your bold use of color always treads teh line but somehow you pull it off nicely.
That Dr. Vahz is impressive for a speed-anything. The use of up-lighting and the way he has his head turned really add to the piece... it's like he just noticed you out of the corner of his eye (and now your screwed lol) but hasn't turned his complete attention to you yet. All the reds and greens and haphazzard stitching make the meatsuit look angry if that's even possible lol.
Some fine work.
Sidenote: For some reason this thread refuses to open in Firefox and even IE (which I had to switch back to teporarily to post this) is glitchy with this thread... anyone else having this problem?
It's not any one comp as I've tried it on 4 and all have this issue... there are like 3 threads that all have this same issue I just get a white screen and a strand of numbers for the address tab. weird -
Not too shabby Caemgen, lots of little details to keep the viewer interested.
Lolz @ the red stapler.
-
Gratz BubbaWheat & Jophiel and thanks Caemgen for running a fine contest in the spirit of giving back.

Quote:At that point, Mel's skin washes over with the supernatural darkness of her black magic so that it's nothing but a swirl of pitch black shadow with visible splits and tears in it where her inner core of fire seeps out, like lava on an active volcano...
This is as close as I ever got to a look I was happy with in the game, though it's only because I'm frustrated with the character creator that I finally settled on it. If I had my way, I would have something much more akin to the Vulcan pictures I linked earlier.
Sooooo something like this then?
I got a little sloppy towards the end (hands and such) cuz it's late and I'm tired but hey close enough. -
Taclobanon: You know there are "57" varieties of Heinz.

Quote:Yeah the ninja pile up is hilarious.Yes, I had tons of fun coming up with the pile'o'ninja, there.
Here's where I am now, with the forms rendered out in grey. Some of the colors are kinda mucky because of that, but my next step is to switch out the grey for proper hues.
The top one reminds me a bit of the cartoon gargoyles?
Was going to mention the MM's cuff but it looks like you caught it already
It's looking good so far Liz.

Quote:Wouldn't know about that since none of my male heroes ever run. They're awesome like that.<--- girl
I've never played a male character in this game... they run funny.

Quote:Ok I hadn't heard of that series before (only Vulcans I know of are the The Roman God of the Forge and the "Live long and prosper" type) but ok at least I got the fire/hair idea right heh (thought I was pushing it on the hair becoming fire lol I guess not far enough). When Mel manifests her BURN into it's penultimate form she looks similar to the Vulcans from Odin Sphere:
Though I appreciate the effort on your part. Thank you. :3
I think my main issue is the same one that Caemgen has. It's not recognizable as Mel anymore, since the distorted features are more androgynous. Though the hair manifesting as fire is right on the money, since that's what it was always meant to be a symbol of in the first place. Don't take it the wrong way though, since I'm always appreciative of any art I get. You just happen to be open to discussion, so you get the feedback that I normally hold back.
If you could soften the features up so it's more feminine and find a way to reconcile hair that flows upwards, with a hairstyle that has pronounced bangs then it would be much more recognizable as the character.
Ok then if I decide to take another crack at it later when I get some more free-time can you answer a few more questions? You don't have to spend a lot of time, simple yes/no or brief explanation is fine.
1. Fire in the eyes, good or bad?
2. Are her eyes always green or would they turn red amid burn.
3. Placement/shape of the horns ok?
4. In the Vulcan pics you put up the horns are longer, do mels ever change shape size or curvature or are they a constant?
5. Placement/shape of the ears ok?
6. By pronounced bangs do you mean some hair always has to fall forward across the forehead? Or just that there has to be more recognizable sections?
7. How close is Mel to her look in the CC reference as far as the face... or was that face chosen because of the pronounced green eyes?
8. Pronounced canines yay or nay?
9. "joker grin" too much? In other words should I keep her mouth normal size and just curl it back for the effect or can it stretch?
10. How much of her actually becomes fire and what happens to her clothes?
11. Bonus question what's this emoticon mean? :3 is that like curly villain mustache or something? (Also the emoticons here on the forum really suck, sorry but the rolleyes don't even roll their eyes what's up with that? the smiley, mad and stick-out-tongue are passable at least but the rest /e thumbdown)
P.S. It occurs to me after a couple tries, with mixed results, it's hard to surprise someone with thankyou gift art when you can't ask questions or ask for references beforehand (though I have found your reference sheet now) without giving away the surprise.
Suppose I could've asked Deebs or Shia...

Yeah I always did like that painting. That's pretty easy to do... some of the other stuff, like flush mounting the
zone monitor screens right on the teleporters (which I think should be standard... or at least an option) is a bit trickier.
The program is called Splasher and it's great for loading screens too as well as changing music
you don't care for... like the tunes playing in pocket D, same mix over and over for years, now mine
plays tunes from MP3 favorites list on my pc. Great little app. -

So I wanted to take a stab at Massacre Melanie (well not literally... that would probably be bad for my health)
to say thanks for spending the time to really critique my LJ piece... and Suichiro just had
a birthday too so great... but I wanted to do something a little different.
I was wondering what would happen to Mel if she totally flipped out and let the BURN consume
her to the point where it warped her features and her hair actually manifested as literal fire!
Well I'm not sure how close I got to that but hopefully Suichiro likes the results so far.
If not... well it's the thought that counts.
Happy Birthday Suichi!
P.S. A bit tough to see but those are supposed to be flames in her eyes as well...
Also am I the only one that sees something of the Joker in this pic lol??? -
Soooo cute... gah teh cutness it burns!
I was wondering how you would do the hair and wings, they came out beautifully.
D'oh one little thing missing though... the eyes of the goddess are golden.
Is there anyway you could do something like you did with Iskra or Grinning
Spade but leave in the black lashes?
Kinda like this --->except neater (it's hard for me to get the lines right
since I have no tablet or mouse just a trackball)?
Edit: Thank you for this.

Dude that's what capes are for.
