  1. Well, I'm frustrated. My new ATI Radeon 5870 card (replacing my two nVidia 9800GTX) is great and all, and enables me to use a resolution of 1920x1080 on my 24" wide screen monitor, but CoX on test on Ultramode... if I'm just standing still it looks very pretty, but my frame rate is like 17. (On regular CoH it's 50-60, sometimes higher.) It looks choppy and is quite frustrating. I know earlier in the test run they intentionally dialed down the FPS, but it should be normal now, right? (And no, I'm not using FSAA and occlusion together since I knew about that issue.)

    At this point, I feel like I spent $400 for nothing. I'd blame it on my 2.5 GHz Quad CPU, but none of my four cores are anywhere near maxed out. (CPU usage is at 20%, RAM is at about 35%)
  2. Well, misery loves company, so I guess I'm glad I'm not the only one!
  3. I upgraded to ATI Radeon 5870 and everything looks great, and I also upped my resolution to 1920x1080. However, when I select a menu - like costumes or Personal Info - the game will snap back to a scene earlier in the mission for a second before bringing up the menu in question. I've never had CoX do this before. Any ideas?
  4. I finally decided on the SAPPHIRE Vapor-X 100281VX-2SR Radeon. Ordered it from Newegg yesterday with three day shipping, and it is due to be delivered TODAY. Hooray! I will post results once it is installed and running.

    I currently have two GeForce 9800GTX cards in SLI configuration. I'm going to yank one and see if I can get it to fit inside my son's PC. The other I'll probably sell, though I did read that there is a way to get it to work as a dedicated PhysX card. Does anyone know if that is actually possible?
  5. One last question -

    Is there any benefit to getting this card as opposed to the one that's $10 cheaper?

    First card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814150443

    second card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814150476

    The first one support the eyefinity thing, which I don't care about since I only have one monitor. (Though I guess it wouldn't hurt to have it if the card has any other benefits.) The first one also talks about the double lifetime guarantee, but I thought all XFX cards had that?
  6. I managed to figure that out myself (about the six screen setup) after I posted that, so maybe there's hope for me yet!

    Okay, I've decided, I'm ordering the 5870 1GB card. As far as I can tell, that should be a good card for CoX and just about anything else I decide to play in the near future. Newegg has a variety of them for around $400, which was kind of my self-imposed ceiling, so now all I have to do is figure out which brand. (Diamond, XFX, Sapphire, PowerColor, Gigabyte...)

    In the listing of the stats, there doesn't seem to be much if any difference, which makes sense since it's essentially the same card. That said, the Effective Memory Clock seems to vary quite a bit, anywhere from 1200MHz to 4800MHz. What's that about?
  7. Firstly, I want to say a big thanks to those of you who are more video card savvy for helping the rest of us!

    Secondly, I've noticed the Radeon 5870 comes in 1GB and 2GB flavors. Is the extra 1GB of RAM worth the $100 bump in price? What benefit will I see?

    Thanks!
  8. Okay, I need to upgrade from my two SLI nVidia 9800GTX cards. I've posted before, and want to get whatever will let me play CoH in ultra mode with everything set to the highest setting. I have the (not-yet-released-but-available-for-pre-order) EVGA GeForce GTX480 in my Amazon cart. But is that overkill? Some comments I've read lead me to believe that it may well be. I don't play any other PC games. Just CoX.

    I've read a lot of good things about the (also available for pre-order) Radeon 5850, which is about $200 cheaper. Would this card allow my 2.85 GHz quad core PC w/ 8 GB RAM to play CoX in ultra mode on all the highest settings with excellent frame rates?

    Is there a card out there that's actually available now that would meet all the UM criteria w/ highest settings and 60+ FPS?

    Thanks!
  9. As it stand now, with a nVidia 9800GTX card and all the options turned up to the highest possible settings, I regularly get 50-60 FPS on CoX. I can do ultra mode on all the highest settings, but the FPS is lower and it looks a little choppy.
  10. So what would be the real world benefit of buying the GeForce GTX480 superclocked edition as opposed to the regular edition? Is it really that much faster? And I always thought overclocking was supposed to be a bad things in terms of the life of your graphics card.

    I'd be putting it in my 2.85Ghz Quad Core system with 8GB of Ram, 64-bit Windows Vista Ultimate, and a 1000w power supply. Would I benefit from the overclocking?

    Thanks!!
  11. I was thinking of getting the GeForce GTX 285 because Positron mentioned that one in his initial post in this thread, so thanks for the heads up re: DirectX 11. I guess money is an object to a point - I don't want to spend $700+ for the Radeon 5970 - but the Radeon 5870 or Nvidia GTX 480 look like possibilities.
  12. So what is the absolute best card out there to run CoX with all the Ultra mode options on the highest settings?

    If it matters, I have a 2.85Ghz Quad Core system with 8GB of Ram, 64-bit Windows Vista Ultimate, and a 1000w power supply, not to mention a fairly huge case, so size of card of the power it takes isn't a great concern.
  13. They should still be free. It's silly to charge $10 to transfer one bit of data from one server to another.
  14. Success! I opened up my PC, and apparently the fan was trying to grow a kitten, as it was covered in dust and fur. I hauled the case outside and spent about 30 minutes cleaning it with compressed air, and it's running beautifully now. I have CoH running while I'm writing this note, and the temp is a nice 60 C. Idle temp was 50 C!

    Thanks so much to you guys, your advice helped a lot - especially the advice to take the PC outside. It was so much easier to see everything in natural light, and all the dust that I cleared out... well, it's much better off outside than it would be inside!

    Also, I want to mention that if you're ever in the market for a new PC, check out Cybertron. (cybertronpc.com) My PC's warranty has expired, but customer service nevertheless promptly answered my frantic emails and were great about giving advice and help. They are top notch.
  15. Am just about to power down, crack open the case, and try cleaning out the dust, so wish me luck!
  16. If it is a thermal paste issue, how do I fix that?
  17. Thanks for your quick and thorough reply! You've given me a lot to check out, and I really appreciate it.

    As it stands now, it seems fine unless I'm playing CoH (or, probably, other CPU intensive games.) So I'm going to leave it be for tonight and tomorrow, when my head is clear, pop the side panel and check things out.
  18. I've been playing CoH for two years, but only today did this problem start. I'll play for maybe ten minutes and the CPU cores (I have a Quad core system) start going up. They start around 72 C and fairly quickly raise to 80, then 95, and a few times got to 100 which sounded the alarm on the Real Temp 3.40 program I'm using. According to Real Temp, both of my video cards stay around 60 C, so I don't think that's the problem. (Or maybe it is and it just isn't recording a temp change? I have no clue.)

    Here are the relevant stats for my PC:

    * Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300 2.5GHz Quad Core Processor
    * Asus P5N-E SLI Motherboard
    * 8192 MB (8GB) DDR II 800MHz PC6400 Memory
    * Dual nVidia GeForce 9800GTX 512MB GDDR3 PCI-Express Video Cards in
    SLI Configuration
    * ANTEC TPQ1000 1000W P4 ATX POWER SUPPLY
    * MS WINDOWS VISTA ULTIMATE 64BIT

    Any help would be appreciated!!
  19. It is very frustrating, I keep getting emails that they are "escalating your ticket for further assistance, and someone will be in contact with you as soon as possible," and yet nothing gets fixed.

    It's not like I'm in desperate need of a shoulder cape or anything, I just look forward to the rewards and it's annoying not getting them.

    If I forgot to pay them, well, they'd be right on that.
  20. I've sent a petition, so hopefully it will get fixed soon. It's just annoying, it doesn't seem like something that would be that hard to get to work correctly.
  21. I should have received my 21 month veteran reward on Feb 21st. Today is the 23rd, and still no reward. I've written NcSoft and received the standard "I am escalating your ticket for further assistance, and someone will be in contact with you as soon as possible" but have yet to hear anything back.

    I've had no interruptions in service, and I assumed this was automated, so I'm not sure why I still haven't received my reward. Has this happened to anyone else?

    I know it's goofy, but I look forward to those rewards every three months, and it's a let down not to get it when I was supposed to.

    Thanks!
  22. I've been playing CoX for almost two years now, but never designed a base. Last month I bought my son his own account, and the first thing he wants to do is make our own SG and base. I know how to build rooms and decorate them, but for the life of me I cannot figure out how to build things like teleporters. I've searched this forum, and nothing I can find explains what apparently I need to know.

    Can someone offer up a clear, exact, step-by-step set of instructions on exactly what I need to do to build a working teleporter to, say, Atlas Park?

    I would really appreciate it.

    Graphics card

    I have two nVidia GeForce 9800GTX 512MB GDDR3 PCI-Express Video Cards in SLI configuration running on a 2.5 GhZ Windows Vista quad core machine with 8 GB of RAM. I assume I'll have no problem playing in ultra mode?

    Thanks!
  24. Thanks guys! I will concentrate my slots on sprint, and whenever I do a respec I may switch out Swift for Hurdle, since I do enjoy hopping.
  25. For the first time, I'm trying to get by without a travel power. I have ninja run, as well as Swift from the Fitness pool. Would I be better off adding extra slots to Swift or Sprint? I want to get the maximum speed and jump that I can, but only want to devote two slots to it.

    Thanks!
