Ran across another player the other day who said that controllers with no pets were absolutely useless because the powers before the pet didn't do anything at all.

Why did this player say this?

Because he had been running nothing but level 54 boss farms. Controllers aren't very useful when you are fighting nothing but bosses, because they resist the majority of controller powers, giving the impression that those powers do nothing at all.

So there you have a player who has a misconception of an entire AT because of a limited experience that does not naturally occur in the rest of the game. In normal content you will never find a spawn of nothing but +4 bosses. In AE it is very common.

Players getting a skewed perception of how an AT plays because of something like that is not a good thing.

    [/ QUOTE ]

    This. Totally QFT.

New players that only see boss farms really gets a skewed vision of what the "normal" game is and what they should expect.
  2. Are you sure Maria Jenkins is not listed with your inactive contacts? I have seen thsi happen very often on villain side of the game. New contacts get introduced but get sent on Inactive and are pending because i have too many active contact and too many books opened. Happens to me all the time. Last week i could not even talk to my Patron ( Ghost Widow ) but she magically came back on the Active list after i completed Levantera Vanguard story arc.

I will never understand why some people are so obsessed with how fast *other* people are leveling. How fast I PL my alt has nothing to do with anybody else. The world would be a far better place if people would just direct all that misguided energy to more worthy... causes.

    [/ QUOTE ]

If every MMO were working on your principle, there would probably not have any left going on the market. You know that?

Devs certainly did not create 50 leveling steps to see them bypassed in less than a week, a day or even a hour.

    This is non-sense.

You know the funny thing is that I am American, and I'm so used to my fellow Americans and their unwillingness to correctly use our language that I didn't even notice that your grammar wasn't perfect.

May I ask what your native language is?

French. I live in Quebec. I learned english watching Star Trek and Babylon 5 haha

With grammar like this, I can barely give this post 2 stars.

    ...Seriously, "thinked"?

...That's an awfully unsteady high horse you're on...

I'll add to what other people have already said that if you're mid-level for the task force or strike force, clearing (or very nearly clearing) each mission is the most rewarding way to play: maximum XP, maximum loot. For all but the longest TFs, and for all villain SFs, that's what I'd actually prefer: to join the TF or SF that is my level, and play it as designed, fighting our way to the objectives.

But since task forces and strike forces give only merit rewards to people above their level, and since running the TFs and SFs their own level more than once per day gives diminishing rewards, your average TF or SF has at least half of the players getting no reward for anything but the end of the mission. So, by definition, half or more of the players on the team want to get to that end-of-mission as soon as possible.

(What? Inf? Yeah, as if there's anything left in this game that can be bought with the amount of inf you'd get from clearing a TF. You get inf in this game by grinding out merits, using merits to buy reward rolls, and selling your unwanted random rewards to people who got their inf from gold farmers.)

    [/ QUOTE ]

And that point that we bring up is that merits and influence and drops and all those rewards are only good for one thing..... enhancing your character for combat. To solely focus on the reward and toss aside the combat is silly. It devalues the reward. What good are all the merits and recipes and IOs and bonuses if all you do is race past all of the mobs. It's like saying "I like going to the movies. I time them so that I can catch the last 20 minutes of all the movies. I can fit 20 movies into a weekend!"

Sure the climax is at the end of the movie, but what's the point? The same with this game. What's the point of collecting all of these rewards and having a pimped out character if you don't want to actually play? To just see the cool bonuses listed?

    [/ QUOTE ]

Except how many times can you go see the same movie, before you stop giving a [censored]?

After doing the ITF about 30+ times, I really couldn't care less about the story. I know it by heart. And it's not as if the combat is all that compelling. This game is still pretty much, beat stuff down till it's dead before it kills you, in it's basic form.

The AI in dev content is still dumb as rocks.

I can see some folks loving the reward and yeah just pimping out a character IS in fact the point for many. If not many folks would have stopped playing by now.

    [/ QUOTE ]
That's my point. Why are they playing if they find the content boring? I may not have said it, but if actually playing the game is boring, then why are they doing it? To pimp out a character so they can not play the game?

Using my movie analogy, it's like saying "I hate going to the movies, but I go anyway so I get coupons to save money on movie tickets." Great. You've got coupons for doing something you don't like doing, and had to force yourself to do it to get the coupons.

You've got great enhancements for a character, but don't like playing him.

It's burnout. The old phrase "familiarity breeds contempt" comes to mind. Some people don't like the content because they've done it all before, so they concentrate on the rewards, forgetting that the rewards are only good for enhancing the content, which they claim they don't like anymore. So what do they do after they get the rewards? Stand around and show off their set bonuses? I wish! Instead they put together TFs and SFs, speed through the content so they don't have to play, and deny everyone else on their team who actually enjoys beating the bad guys the ability to do so.

I tend to agree with what you've written here.

I am given options to rate stuff as i see fit and that is just what i do.

On a purely philosophical basis, you are of course free to draw your own line in the sand and stand by it.

The rest of us are free to point out how unreasonable your standards are.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Fair enough. Not that i ever claimed to be a reasonable person anyway

I do not give a damn about what other players thinked about a story and how they rated it. I never give a 5 and i never give a 1. It really is that simple.

    [/ QUOTE ]
Now I'm confused. I distinctly recall you once saying you would only give stories ratings of 5 or 1, based only on whether they had bad or good average ratings already and not on their contents at all. When did that change?

    [/ QUOTE ]

I changed when i started to actually care about the arcs i was trying. And like the other guy said, if an arc is not worth an A then i have no choice but to give the next rating below which is 4 ( B+,B,B- ).

Too bad the rating system doesnt work with a 1 to 10 value. Id probably never give 10s but i might give 9,8 and 7s quite often.
  11. [ QUOTE ]
I never give a 5 and i never give a 1. It really is that simple.

No, it isn't. If I adopted that policy no one would bother reading my reviews, and they would be right to do so. Your standards are unreasonable.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Well, i dont play by your rules, thats too bad heh. I am given options to rate stuff as i see fit and that is just what i do. We all have our own criterias.
  12. [ QUOTE ]
First of all the post that you're responding to was directed to Mr_DJ, not to you. Just so you know, I wasn't accusing YOU of anything.

    [ QUOTE ]
YOU do not decide for me what is worth 5 stars or not.

[/ QUOTE ]I don't think that anyone here ever said that they do get to decide for you, I know that I certainly did not. If you read my post you will notice that I specifically said; "...in your opinion." Do you understand what the words "in your opinion" mean? I'll give you a hint, they do not mean "I get to decide for you."

    [ QUOTE ]
I will not give 5 stars to something because all players before me decided to do so. I do not give a damn about what other players thinked about a story and how they rated it.

[/ QUOTE ]Also I never said that you have to rate an arc with 5 stars just because others have done so. Make no mistake, if 5,238,066 people give an arc 5 stars and you give it a 1 that is not griefing if you honestly didn't like that story-arc. But if you refuse to ever ever ever ever give any story-arc 5 stars then you either do not understand how the rating system works or you are griefing.

    [ QUOTE ]
    I never give a 5 and i never give a 1.

[/ QUOTE ]Here's the question then: If you played a story-arc and you honestly thought that it was the best story-arc that you've ever played in City of Heroes, would you give it 5 stars?

    [/ QUOTE ]

Yes, i might give it 5 stars if it was the very very very best story ever but to me it is like giving a 10 at the olympic games for gymnastic or artistic skating. It is very unlikely.
  13. ( Not replying to anyone in particular )

When i log on into the game it is because i am here to play. I do not feel any rush or need to hurry when playing. If i play it means i have free time on hand and willing to have a good time doing whatever i will do. I see no need in piling rewards fast because these are limitless ressources. The game will still be there when ill come back tomorrow. Might as well have a good time and enjoy playing my characters. All my characters are built and were meant to fight. That is just what i intend to do with them. Simply put, stealthing and avoiding battles bore me.
  14. [ QUOTE ]
    [ QUOTE ]
so it doesn't make sense to you that I don't believe anything is perfect?

    [/ QUOTE ]
No, it does not make sense. I'll explain why.

If by definition nothing is perfect, then by definition a 5 star rating does not mean perfect. The rating system has 5 stars, each of which represents 20% of the maximum possible rating. If you rate a story-arc with 5 stars it means that the story-arc is in the top 20% of story-arcs in the Mission Architect in your opinion. That's all that it means. 5 stars does not mean it is perfect.

If you're refusing to give 5 stars to any story-arc then you either do not understand what a 5 star system is supposed to be OR you are intentionally griefing others by refusing to give 5 stars to the story-arcs that deserve to have 5 stars. In other words: if you're playing MA story-arcs and intentionally refusing to give any of them 5-stars, then are either an idiot or you are griefing.

    So which one is it?

    [/ QUOTE ]

YOU do not decide for me what is worth 5 stars or not. I will not give 5 stars to something because all players before me decided to do so. I do not give a damn about what other players thinked about a story and how they rated it. I never give a 5 and i never give a 1. It really is that simple. Most of the time i rate everything with a 3 because almost every arcs i played were not that much impressive or that much bad.

And now if someday devs or gms were to ever accuse me of griefing then ill reply to them that maybe they should rate the content for me if they do not want me to rate it the way i want.

    That is all.
  15. [ QUOTE ]
What's the prob with capping res? I mean no you can't hit AT limits on res without a bit of fiddling, but I know you can make a cheapish IO build for INV tanks that softcap you for smashing/lethal and keeps your other resists kind of ok.

    [/ QUOTE ]

But again, when you play Invul, you kinda have to cherry-pick your enemies. Sure you can achieve a very high defense with Invincibility running, CJ, Weave and lot of IO bonuses and you can add over that capped Smash/Lethal resistances with Tough/Temp Invul/Unyielding/RPD...

But! If you are fighting mostly Smash/Lethal enemies, you end not getting much use for high defense since 90% Resist + your health recovery is often enough to do the job.

And! If you are fighting enemies that are more into exotic damage like psionic/energy/fire/cold then your resistances are getting alot less useful at soaking damage so while great defense will definetely make you tougher to kill, a few bad hits, defense debuffs and what not will start melting an Invul very fast ( especially if damage is psionic or toxic ).

Yeah, Invul is overall great and looking good but there are still quite a few enemies that can cripple him very quick and that even with IO set bonuses to defense.
  16. I never rated any story with a 5. I never give the perfect score to anyone. If i am impressed, i give a 4 at most. Most of the time i vote a 3 on everything. Really bad missions get a 2. I never gave a 1 yet.
  17. What i find hilarious is that there are lot lot players broadcasting to join all the Mayhem missions they skipped because of AE powerleveling on red side.

But since there are almost no one doing the Mayhem anymore they will have a very hardtime getting Invader bonus hp. I am very happy that Mayhem cant be flashbacked. You choose to farm and PL but at least you miss on something that is worth many IOs you could get for free ( 10% more hp ).

Ive been done with AE for quite awhile and now that most badges are gone i have like no reason to go back there. And i do not need a 20th level 50 anytime soon so i decided to play the game the good ol way.

Makes no sense anyway to see all these level 1-20 joining with level 40-50 in boss farms. Truth is only the very high level are doing a fair share of work in these missions. Lowbies are simply dragged along and getting overthetop XPs without really contributing anything.

In the old sewer teams, players were all around same level and everyone was contributing the same. Thats the big difference i see between sewers and AE.

Also this constant spamming from power usage gets old very, very quickly.

    [/ QUOTE ]

    I can attest to this.

I have a Fire Blaster that used to use macros for some of his attack powers. After a while I got so many complaints from team mates that I just started using the regular power buttons again and I moved the macros off to the side so that I could still pop them off once in a while.

    My macros:

/macro Blast "local Hey catch!$$powexec_name Fire Blast"

/macro FB "local Fire in the hole!$$powexec_name Fire Ball"

Now, imagine the chat window getting filled up with...

    Catch this!
    Fire in the hole!
    Catch this!
    Catch this!
    Fire in the hole!
    Catch this!
    Catch this!
    Fire in the hole!

    It get's annoying really quick.

Totally agree. It is best to use them just once in awhile sparingly.
  19. Many people think Detonation sucks big time but i like it. It is cheap and is good while waiting to slot more expensive stuff. It is also the only AoE set that carries some defense bonuses i think. People says it has not enough +Recharge in the set. They are right but nothing prevents 5 slotting Detonation and adding a level 50 Recharge IO with it.

Anyway, i /bugged it too as soon i noticed it was broken.

Barata, you should have been on the ITF I was on last night. We had people regularly still stomping baddies in the mission after the mission complete, we charged up the hill on the first mission instead of flying up the back, took down every ambush in the second, even if it didn't feel like coming to us, we searched it out and destroyed the heck out of it.

In the third mission, that team was the only one I've ever been on that charged straight up the canyon of lag, and one of the few teams that took Rommie and Requiem on the platform.

Oh yeah, and the entire TF was done on invincible.

    Glorious...

    [/ QUOTE ]

Hey! I was on that TF last night! I was playing my VEAT Impervium Widow!

Yes! It was GLORIOUS! We simply charged and obliterate everything we saw! And i got Hecatomb Dmg/Rech Recipe thee hee hee
  21. I am totally with you Barata. I play the game because i like to see my characters actually fighting stuff. I enhance my characters with cool IOs so i can enjoy fighting stuff even more.

When i start a TF, i warn people that i intend to destroy/kill/arrest everything that shows on sight in every missions. I would not have it any other way.

Oh and remember, the level 50 enemy you avoid always is the one that carries the Purple Recipe. Thats my motd
  22. DETONATION IO: The 5th set bonus is gone! After bonus number 4, the two following bonus are marked as a 6 and they indeed both work only when you have the complete set slotted. So basically, five-slotting Detonation is not anymore giving the 1.88% AOE defense. I noticed it on my VEAT and he is missing the bonus in the RealNumber screen.
  23. Hi guys, so far i only noticed one bugged IO but there may be more:

    binds or macros

If you want to create a macro, you can start by typing:

    /macro NAME "powexec_name POWER $$ local TEXT"

NAME is the name of your macro that will show up as a new button in your powertray.
POWER is the name of the power tied to your text.
TEXT is the text you want to say in local.

So a macro could look like this:

/macro Punch "powexec_name Shadowpunch $$ local I hope you like pain!"
