Thanks! I figured I was missing something. I have one contact in Croatoa, but I think I had stuck in my head that it was PvP. I'll head that way and follow up with the other suggestions.
Thanks again. -
I've been playing for a few months, and have my blaster to around level 30. I'm enjoying the game, but I'm hitting a bit of a slowdown the last couple of weeks. As it's taking a bit longer to level (which I'm fine with, I'm all about the journey), I'm also noticing that I'm stalling a little bit in terms of having content to do. I'm sure I'm missing something, so I'm looking for advice on where to look next.
I've been working Independence Park contacts, and have most of them at Confidant status. Given my playstyle and the nature of my odd work schedule these days, I have a strong preference for PvE and soloing, so I've not touched a couple least one that required a team to play. Are there other zones I should look at this point for contacts?
Also, I'm really interested in investing in the mythology of the game, as its the story that is going to hold my interest in the game long term. In terms of quests, I've been focusing on book missions, feeling like the investment in the story arcs provides a far more engaging experience (and yes, I read the mission texts!). Is there anything I should do in-game or out of game to get a better sense of the larger story arc? This is the only my second MMO, and the other one I play is an IP that I care a lot about (LOTRO). I'd like to get a better investment in the story of this game.
Thanks for any advice you might have! -
I'm still figuring out a good use for Lightning Field in my soloing. I'm finding that my current play style focuses on the range, but draws on the melee attacks either when I'm mobbed, or when someone comes inside. Because of that, I've actually liked the sniper power, as it's allowed me to take down the first of a mob pretty quickly. I'm trying to deliberately use Lightning Field more just to see what it can do, but even in my heaviest battles (again, so far and only soloing, now at lvl 26) I'm not having battles last long enough to take advantage of much damage over time effects. On the other hand, I'm liking having one more option to either freeze or knockback somebody, as I'm running into a few mobs that are a bit heavy for a squishy like me. In this build, it will be 30 before I can get stamina, so I have to watch it.

It definitely doesn't bother me to get too much information, so I appreciate seeing one full build. I figure that a month in, I have many, many months of play on this character to even begin to figure him out. The game intrigues me in allowing different power variants for a single character, much less all of the enhancements, so I recognize that I'm sipping from a fire hose in listening in on these conversations. Still, they are helpful.

Playing around with the build tester, I'm seeing that by lvl 50, I could have all of the energy and electric powers, hover/fly, and stamina (with the 2 prereq powers). Is there something else I should be thinking about getting, such that I should be thinking about which of the ene/elec powers not to take?
Also, is hover valuable once I have fly? My understanding is that when still, fly acts the same as hover, so couldn't I just take the other prereq power for fly and ignore hover altogether?
Again, thanks for the discussion. I'm sure I'll be getting an imperfect build, but I'm certainly learning from this conversation! -
Great thoughts, all. Much to think about. So far, I've found Sniper to be one of my most useful, but I realize that it may change as I learn the game more. My typical play, is to do the sniper first thing, which sometimes can one shot weaker folks, sometimes can significantly weaken the first in the mob. I quickly follow with my medium and light blast shot (can't remember the names), which have better range than my big shot. Most of the time, somewhere in those three I've taken out the first of the mob. If others are coming in, I'm then trying to use a couple of melee shots, and then follow with another blast as needed.
I'm interested to hear the recommendations for electric fence and aim, because those are the two I've been using probably the least. The lightning clap was a new one for me, so I haven't used it much, but as the mob sizes are increasing these last couple of levels, I am concerned about getting too many around me with no way to control them.
As far as the enhancements being separately built, I was reading on the wiki about unassigned enhancements in respec. Is that related to something else?
Thanks for everyone's feedback. This is definitely helping the learning process! -
Thanks. I tried a re-spec, getting stamina in exchange for Aim and one other power. When I got done, I didn't have any enhancements. When I switched to my other build, they were all still there. Do you lose the enhancements on a second build, or did I do something wrong?
Sorry if this should be a separate thread. -
I've been playing for a little over a month. I've leveled my first character up to level 25 and am curious if there's anything I should be aware of as I'm making my way along. The last few times out, the difficulty is definitely climbing up, and I'm starting to feel my lack of defense more, as well as starting to have to be much more aware of my endurance levels.
Here's my current build (approximately, I'm doing this from memory)
Primary: Energy
Power Bolt
Power Blast
Energy Torrent
Power Burst
Sniper Blast
Aim
Power Push
Secondary: Electrical
Electric Fence
Charged Brawl
Lightning Field
Havoc Punch
Lightning Clap
Power Pool 1: Flight
Hover
Flight
Any thoughts or advice about powers I should focus on instead? I'm curious about Stamina. In terms of play style, I've been trying to work from a distance given my low defense, but have tried to choose some good close in powers to couple with a knockback or stun. Still, I haven't tried any teaming yet, so I feel like I'm on the early part of the learning curve for both the game and the character. I'm also trying to level this one out in the regular world rather than using the AE, in case that matters.
Thanks for any advice. -
FWIW, I just opened up my account last month towards the end of my free trial. Started with the Mac edition, then added GvE, CoV Collector's, then CoH Collector's, I believe in that order. I assume I still have the Architect edition to go, and maybe the CoH original edition, though I'm questioning that based on what I'm reading here. Either way, they all have stacked fine, each giving an additional month tacked on to the expiration date of the previous period.

Thanks for the replies! This is a big help.

Here's another question I've been curious about. As I'm getting missions from various contacts, some of them are giving me 2 options. It seems most of these are choices between missions in the cities and in the buildings. Generally, I've been picking the one that follows the storyline I'm working on, and if there is none, I'm just picking based on my mood. Is there anything I should be aware of about the selection of these missions? I'm always interested in chasing engaging storylines, so whatever guides me along that path will be my preference.
I'm sitting at about 18 or 19 if the level matters.
Thanks for any feedback! Still enjoying the game. -
So I'm finishing up my free trial this weekend, and am looking forward to some months of play. I've started with a blaster, and have enjoyed reading other postings about the player type. I'm curious if anyone has any advice/feedback to offer as I press on with leveling the character.
I'm now about level 15. I'm doing energy as my primary and electrical as my secondary, with flying as my transport power. I've tried to balance small, medium, and large damage/induction on my energy blasts, and so I now have bolt, blast, burst, and sniper. On electrical, I've tried to balance those blasts with a little bit of melee in case they get in close range, so I've used electrical fence and charged punch (or whatever it's called). I did hover and now flying for transport.
I'm trying to keep my enhancements in use, with an emphasis on damage, accuracy, and ranged for the bursts. Fence is the only AoE I have so far.
All I've done so far is solo, and I haven't touched AE yet. While I expect to solo a lot, I do hope to learn the character well to maximize my effectiveness when I do group. Definitely don't want to be a drag when the grouping comes.
Any advice on things I should think about as I continue to level him up? It's been a fun ride so far!
Thanks. -
Thanks. I went ahead and dropped it, but thanks for the info on the /petition. Luckily, my drop had just reset.

Giving this mission a try (Steel City, Jewelry story, police scanner mission), it tells me to head to the location and find out what's going on. I clear the place, rescuing the hostages, all of whom just say these guys are after me. Once cleared, I can't find anything to do, but it won't list it as completed. Anyone remember this one?
I'm new, so if there's a good source out there with quest hints/guides, if anyone has a link to share, I'd appreciate that too.
Thanks for any advice! -
mmmm.... doughnuts.... grrrrllllll......

Great advice, all. Had a nice session in the Hollows, and made the contact with Meg. Figuring out Hover also gives me some sense of how to navigate. It slowly starts to make sense...
-
Wow! Quick responses, and extremely helpful! I had the hollows mission, got thoroughly confused about how to get there (kept getting killed as I was clearly passing through an area way too difficult for me) then dropped it in the hopes of getting a different kind of quest. I'll head back to the map (I'm getting more comfortable with it) and find a way to the hollows.
Thanks for the advice on the Tram too. I thought I had seen something about it, but couldn't find anything about it.
Thanks again! -
Sorry if I've already posted this, but I think my connection may have failed on my and it didn't get posted. Anyway, I'm in the middle of my trial, and have liked it enough to purchase GvE and try it for another month or so. Still, I'm trying to get my feet under me, and am finding questions along the way. I've only played one other MMO (Lotro) so sorry if I'm just slow on the uptake.
I've leveled my first up to about 8 or so, but I'm not finding a lot of missions to go on. I've pretty much followed a linear track, as the contacts have given one thing to do at a time, then passed me on to someone else. The problem is that the current one I've got has me heading into Perez Park, which seems beyond my at my level (solo anyway). While I'm happy to group up for stuff, I'd like to have story lines to get involved that can be solo'd at my level, as I have an odd playing schedule.
Who should I be talking to to get involved in some fun story lines at low levels? Any other advice for getting my feet under me while new to the game?
Also, is there any way to fast travel from zone to zone? I have hover, but it's really not much faster than sprint at this level, and some of these contacts are just sending me on to other zones, so I'm kind of doing a tour.
Thanks for any advice! -
Thanks for the info! One followup to the original reply: Is it important to put the codes in in order of release? So, for example, if I pick up a GvE copy and put in that code when trial runs out, am I limited then to the Architect Edition, or can I still go back and put in the older releases later?
Looking forward to getting more into the game! -
New player question, sorry if I've come to the wrong forum. I'm in my free trial right now, and am thinking of trying a month. A store nearby is selling new boxes of apparently older releases of the game - Good vs. Evil edition, even the original box. I realize that these boxes won't contain the latest update like the Architect edition, but they are pretty cheap ($10 or so). Does the included game time in these old boxes still work for the game? Once you subscribe, can you use the codes from the old boxes to get additional months of game time, or are they limited to new accounts?
Thanks for any feedback!
