Quote:Some times he uses a dirty great wrench :PReally, think of this along the lines of a Doctor Who storyline. What super-power does the Doctor have? Brains and knowledge. It shouldn't matter what power level the characters are, it should matter what they know, and how clever they are. This assumes I'm clever enough to do it right, of course.
-
Quote:Just a personal issue of mine, I like to have an IC explanation of each and every power. Not exactly sure what that means, but the plots I run tend to revolve around roleplay rather than running lots of MA missions. RP powers which aren't just power-gaming are not an issue.
Don't know why I mentioned it actually, might be hungry. -
In game or on the boards?
Would be nice to be able to use the less game play mechanics centered powers. -
Quote:I think his point is, that there is no PVP required to accomplish the current tasks.Again, engaging in is not the same thing as winning. What differentiates the mechanics for getting Shivans and Nukes from your hypothetical is that an objective must still be achieved. Whether you achieve it via direct conflict or evasion is irrelevant, you are still pitting yourself against another player, you just happen to be challenging his ability to find and catch you.
Also your hypothetical is flawed in so much as it doesn't have any bearing on my point. That evasion isn't itself an achievement worthy of merit doesn't stop it from being a form of competition.
And yes, much like any player who has won a game of Capture the Flag, or Conquest, or Death Match or whatever, you won a PvP game, a lot, but that doesn't make you anything but good at the Bloody Bay mini-game.
The mechanics still work if you are the only person in the zone, without pitting yourself against any person. -
They can't copy right character names you know that right?
NCsoft has a list of names that they disallow, to simply save time on moderation.
But to get genericed you'd need to have both the name and costume, which then becomes a copy right infringement.
Edit to clarify:
They can't copyright a name like Red Mist, because it's made of two normal real world words.
That's why 90's Grim Dark comic characters have misspelled names, because it's easier to copyright those. -
Quote:Amusement given how empty the zones are EU side.Just as a thought exercise:
The Devs introduce "PvP Merits".
Defeat a player of equal or higher level to earn one.
Shivans and Nukes cost 10 PvP merits each, and are no longer available the old way.
What would be your (the generic 'your') reaction?
Personally, I have a number of conflicting but interesting thoughts from this scenario. -
Quote:Why?Ah, but now even non-PvP'ers may disagree with you. I sure as hell do. I like the Shivans and missiles exactly the way they are. If I have to risk getting attacked and deal with different combat rules to get them, I'm absolutely fine with that.
I do NOT want them nerfed and made available by other means - UNLESS they keep the 'good versions' available in the PvP zones.
The current version rewards the same whether you PVP or not, hell it rewards the same if you're the only person in the zone. -
Quote:But if there are no PvEer's then there isn't anything for them to take, therefore the whole system of reward is based upon PvE.That doesn't refute my point. This entire argument has assumed that there IS someone doing the PvE aspect. Otherwise, there would be no argument. And yes, it's an argument, it ceased being a debate about 7 pages ago.
My point is: It is possible for a PvPer to acquire Shivans and nukes by doing nothing but PvP.
Not only can they prevent someone from gaining a PvE reward....they can gain it for themselves in the process by killing them and taking their stuff.
That's what I meant about the intent and reward structure both being on the PvPer's side.
It's not really a PvP reward system if it still rewards with out any PvP. -
Quote:Without some one participating in the zones PVE aspect though, there are no codes or shards to receive upon defeating some one. You're leaving out an important point here.
You said at one point that the PvPer has the zone's intent on his side, while the PvEer has the zone's reward structure on his side.
That's not true. The reward structure is on the PvPer's side as well.
How, you ask?
How do you get Shivans? You travel around the zone clicking on meteors for the shard you need to combine with the other 5, then you defeat a few turrets to unlock another clicky.
There's an easier way......Let someone else do the legwork and then kill them for the shards after they take out the turrets. And, voila! You just obtained a PvE reward through PvP.
Pretty simple really. If we weren't supposed to do that, it wouldn't even be possible to do. There are only 2 zones in the game where you can take something away from someone against their will....and they are PvP zones. Sounds to me like the intent was to fight over the shards and codes....which are the reward structure for those zones.
So, if you really get down to it, both the intent AND reward structure are on the PvPer's side in those 2 zones. -
Quote:Ahh but that's not how the mechanics work on those rewards work.If that's all you care about you are in the wrong zone.
PvP zones are for competitive fun.
If you're goal in game is to avoid player interaction going to the zones with the most possible interaction seems excessively counter productive.
Also how does it reduce time for nukes. Two people can clear groups much faster then one.
If PvP zones were purely for competitive fun, then these rewards would be based on a PvP mechanic, like WoW honor system.
Correct me if I'm wrong on the mechanics, but the Warburg nuke scientists reward a code only to the person who rescues them?
Which means an additional trip to a deposit point per code, per person on the team, assuming of course you're being fair with each other. -
All of these have a negative aspect as they all require a loss of time. The first scenario only loses time if acquiring nukes though.
-
So you agree that the during the game play process, interaction with other players has an entirely negative aspect for the initial player?
-
Quote:If you can get them without PVPing, then they aren't PVP rewards.Right, there'd be the "Wah! We cannot get Shivans/Nukes/stealth powers or badges without PvPing! The devs are making us PvP!"
Shivans and nukes are not required to play the game. Should the devs setup a store where you could buy them for 100 million inf or 500 merits? -
Quote:An entirely optional, and quite often not even applicable occurrence. You forgot the "don't get killed by other players" part. It's the chute in your ladders.
It does not effect the reward, gaining a shivian shard without PVPing does not grant an inferior reward than if you'd fought ten people during the process. -
Quote:If you play chess by yourself you always win. PvErs in the PvP zones are trying to do that.
---
Even funnier analogy it's like going onto a paintball field because you heard there was a great view...but you don't plan on playing. You may not be there to play but there is a pretty good chance if those who are see you you will be shot.
Not really, because the mechanics of those rewards are entirely PVE orintated, defeated mobs, use power on object, deliver captives. At no point during the process of getting nukes or shivians, are you required to defeat another player.
If the mechanics of those rewards required PVP there wouldn't be this whole issue. -
AE was supposed to be an alternative method of leveling, for those bored with the regular content.
Removing XP means it's not an alternative leveling path.
This current patch, also means it's not an alternative leveling path.
-------
I'd say it'd be like WoW, instead of letting people grind dungeons, or run through quest lines for XP, randomly deciding to nerf quest line exp so badly that dungeons are the only way to go.
There are some really nice stories on the AE system, but am I going to play them when they are offering 1XP per mob?
Nope, I'll be back to farming paper mission after paper mission.... -

Quote:Cap has a BM and a university within one SJ of each other, no other zone does.
The people who are -still- trying to exploit AE to get any possible rewards it could give nerfed into oblivion have gotten a -lot- quieter. During the Rikti Comm Farm explosion, people were spamming anything and everything in broadcast. Now, not so much. The biggest clue any more, Redside at least, are the level 30 plus characters "lft" in Cap.
Hence why people idle there from level 20 to whatever. -

Is a game faction, so has min/lt/boss.
Is giving much lower rewards than yesterday.
---------------------------------------
So what ever they've changed must be affecting AE rewards as a whole. -
Inside AE
You have defeated Council Empire Grenade
You gain 38 experience and 25 influence.
On the streets
You have defeated Green Ink Man
You gain 174 experience and 73 influence.
Both are white level minions. -
Was getting the same with council mobs.
That is to say, getting much lower rewards than yesterday, from running the same mission. -
President of Oceana, to stand trial at The Hague.
The apparent mastermind behind a plot to kidnap U.S nationals, is to stand trial before the U.N council in several months time. The country of Oceana, has had a turbulent albeit brief time on the world stage, appearing early in the year, it quickly established itself as a key point for shipping.
A peace keeping force of U.N forces and Longbow, are currently occupying the island, until a new government establishes itself. -
Quote:Take four purples and not get hit?If I am playing a tanker there's at least something I can do without being in melee range. On a scrapper, there is nothing. At least, no one here has been able to come up with any plausible suggestions, even if pointing this out is not taken well.
Bear in mind that not every player is even going to have access to a Nemesis staff. Again, what exactly is a scrapper to do in a situation where being in melee range is counterproductive? It seems blindingly obvious to me, even if it's not to anyone else, that in a situation like that any other teammate rather than a scrapper would be preferable. -
((Well I'm guessing that wraps this up, unless anyone has objections?))
((I'd imagine that Longbow would step in as a temporary peace keeping force, until the whole kidnapping issue had been cleared up.
Eventually the government would change a few faces, a new security force established and order returned to the Island.
But that would be many months if not years down the line.)) -
Quote:As leader of Oceana. I do hereby admit that the idea to lure people from the United States of America, to Oceana, was entirely my idea. The people who carried out the plan... she looked over at SusanSue rolled over onto her back, well and truly exhausted, You will have to pay the price for your crimes, you do understand dont you?
There was a few moments of slow steady breathing before she added, I saved your people though, please let this act of kindness set the right tone for the way things will go from here.
Were entirely blameless and acted only, upon threat of punishment. She gave Susan a look, judging if the psychic woman would let it stand or not.
