    Kin/Fire help

    I have a 50++ KM/FA and I've found the best way to play her is fast and furious. Get as much global recharge you can, focus your build on it. Make sure you max out your Burn, Blazing Aura and Power Siphon.

    A lot depends on the concept your going with on the toon. Mine, I took just about everything except Confront. The ranged attacks add versatility to her, but imho weaken her quite a bit since I have to then skip the fighting pool. Make sure you take Acrobatics no matter what.... you -need- the knockback/down protection to stay on target to do damage. Outside of that... go with whatever you want.

    but the more Aggressive the better I've found so far.

    A properly played controller has more than ample mitigation from its primary and secondary. As such I feel it is of most importance to enhance that before going for D/R bonuses. This is achieved through recharge, +recovery and +end. Recharge to keep better controls available more often and recovery/end so you can continue controlling and buff/debuffing. An understanding of how your powers work and on who and proper aggro management can make it where an epic shield is really just "extra".

    Yes I realize there are times where you can have your cake and eat it too and I'm not saying that softcapping is a 'bad thing'. There are times where its easy to achieve (/FF or stacking of resistance in /Sonic, etc.) and your primary goals are still easily done. Nothing wrong with that. I'm just stating it's a nice trick, but far from necessary for proper controller play.

    I have a Fire/Kin as my main (and have had for 3 years now) and my best defense is the 2-ish second recharge on transfusion I've managed. Mind you, I went with the /Fire epic, but that's mostly for concept (earth does give better numbers, which is why I've got one build with the /earth epic on it).

    Same thing here! There has to be a limit to just 2 powersets! Cant have a 3rd, even if the Tag matches another power from a 3rd powerset! hehe Then you'ld have a Franken-Set! A Big no no!
    While limiting the number of sets you could choose from would be a great idea, i'd like to think that limiting between Tags would be enough. Both for great sets of powers that would bring the characters more in line with some of the power sets we see from the in-game NPCs, but it would also allow for sufficient 'power set Suicide' if you didn't focus a bit. One of the things I did do to limit that was requiring the tier 1 power... so, for Mucho-Kin to take Fire-Breath from the fiery assault, he'd have to take Flares at least...

    It would make for some very interesting builds to say the least... but, it would leave the Archetype in place. Incorporating a 'Hybrid' archetype would, in the long run make all the other Archetypes obsolete, i fear. In truth, either one of these ideas has room to make some ung-dly over-powered characters... so i doubt either would ever acutally see the light of day
  4. I had something like this in mind a while ago, but never posted it, not quite sure of the 'balance' issues and whatnot, it went something like exchanging powers for powers, here's what I wrote (modified for post-inherent fitness):

    Power set diversification. I’d like to think this is an acceptable alternate to Proliferation. It works on the concept of ‘tags’ and ‘exchange points’.
    The best way to describe the system; is to do so by example, so, let’s start out by creating a new character. We’ll make our new character like we normally do, costume, power selection, ECT… when we’re done our new toon will be set up:

    Mucho-Kin
    Fire/Kin Controller
    - Fire Control Set
    - Char
    - Kinetics Set
    - Transfusion

    Now, we play Much-Kin normally for 20 levels, (please note, that lvl20 is, were we can start to earn hero points – if you have GR). And, he’ll look something like this:
    Mucho-Kin
    Fire/Kin Controller
    - Fire Control Set
    - Char
    - Fire Cages
    - Hot Feet
    - Cinders

    - Kinetics Set
    - Transfusion
    - Siphon Power
    - Siphon Speed
    - Speed Boost

    - Super Speed Set

    Now, Mucho-Kin’s player isn’t too fond of the way things are shaping up. He’s getting in deep with the tanks and feeling a lack of oomph while standing there toe to toe with the bad-guys. So, Mucho-Kin, partakes on some Hero Tip missions, enough to gain himself a handful of hero points (say, 5 or 10 or 30 or whatever)… and he heads off to get himself a ‘exchange point’ from Fort Trident.

    Now, the way ‘Exchange Points’ work is fairly straight forward, one point, allows you to exchange one power for another, like a mini /respec. But, the kicker here is, it will allow you to do exchange one power for another across archetypes and power sets, as long as the ‘power tags’ match.
    Power Tags, another simple concept. Power Tags group powers, like, Kinetics would be tagged, Kinetic. As would Kinetic Melee. Fire Control would be tagged Fire, as would, Fiery Assault, Fire Armor, Fire Melee, and Fire Blast. True, there are some powers that are unique, such as radiation and illusion… but, one would have to take that into consideration at character creation time. (Please note, only primary and secondary powers have tags… the ancillary sets and epics do not). Each Character only has access to a maximum of two tag groups, (again, primary and secondary) so, once a fire/kin always a fire/kin ...

    So, when Mucho-Kin, opens up his ‘power exchange dialogue box’ it would show something like this:

    Exchange points: 1 Available power sets: 2 (Fire/Kinetic)
    Current Sets: 2
    - Fire Control
    - Kinetics

    Available Power Sets: 5
    - Fiery Melee
    - Fiery Blast
    - Kinetic Melee
    - Fiery Assault
    - Fiery Armor

    Because he’s on the front lines, Mucho-Kin’s player feels like getting in some damage, so he opts to select Kinetic Melee. Under kinetic Melee, he can only pick the level one power (it is a pre-requisite). And, he chooses to exchange his Fire Cages power for the Kinetic Melee level one Body Blow power. Since Kinetics is his secondary power set, any and all Kinetic powers he chooses would be treated as a secondary power in game. His statistics would now look like:
    Mucho-Kin
    Fire/Kin Controller
    - Fire Control Set
    - Char
    - Hot Feet
    - Cinders

    - Kinetics Set
    - Transfusion
    - Siphon Power
    - Siphon Speed
    - Speed Boost

    - Kinetic Melee Set

    There is nothing saying that at level 22 Mucho-kin couldn’t re-select the Fire Cages power, and he probably would, considering that is one of the fire kintroller’s mainstays.
    Also, we should talk about pre-requisites. Each power set has, prerequisites (that’d be the level one powers we –have- to take now). These cannot be traded off for other powers. Also, just because a power crosses Archetypes, doesn’t mean that the toon will be massively uber. Mucho-kin here; is still a Controller. Melee attacks from a controller are –not- something to be feared. I’d also like to consider a limiter, something like once you choose a ‘tag’ to start trading on, you cannot choose the other. In essence, that would leave you with a primary super power, a secondary, a tertiary and finally, your ancillary power sets.

  5. Sorry this took so long to get back to you on, like I said, this is by no means perfect...and it's fairly expensive, so, be ready to spend some bucks on it. In-game I acutally got a lucky Hetacomb:damage drop and plopped it in KO blow... which, of course, helped in the dps department... (and yes, i know the kinetic combats have knock down bonus enh in them...couldn't afford the damage/recharge....i believe that's the expensive one... anyway...)

    This setup gives him 47% s/l, 28% fire/cold, 29% energy/neg, psi 20%, Melee 38%, Ranged 25% and AoE 31% for defense... Res are a bit better, so he can definately take a hit... End got way better after i added the incarnate Cardiac stuff on him

  6. I've got a very survivable build at home, as soon as i get there i'll post it up so you can see it. Honestly it was one of the most fun climbs to 50 that I had, I'd say because of the challange presented by the endurance issues this combo provides. Not to say that it's a bad powerset combo, but you WILL... I repeat WILL have endurance issues until you hit certian land marks. Now, does this build do as much damage as a SS/FA, no... and, because the defenses are fairly sturdy, your going to find yourself hard pressed solo to get your damage bonus over 250%... and rage crash can hurt if your not careful.
    I built it to solo an ITF, but I doubt it can do it completely due to the lack of damage to overcome Rommie's regen, but that was before the cim lore pets and without the help of a envenomed dagger either. Would I do another /DA? yep, definately... but -not- to solo AV with, it's to painful a haul there.

    I've run this build to 50 and opened up all my toon's slots. What the others say about Burn is true, it really does make the set. The trick is to get your recharge down globally. Kick off PS, trigger FE, and then go to town with massive boosts to Damage. It's not rare to see 800-1000 pts show up over my target -without- a crit.

    Having said all that, i usually play my scrapper with the 'kill it' before it 'kills you' mentality, so I have sacrificed a few defenses to get her to that point. Hope that helps.

    SS/SD advice

    I've tried my hand at one or two of these but found my niche in the SS/DA i'm currently running. However, when I made my SS/SD i used http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showt...70#post1154870 as a guide... it's helped me a bunch.

  9. No reason to apologize, I've lurked on these forums long enough to know sometimes being direct i the only way the OP will pay attention, so Thanks for the honest and concise answers.
    I posted looking for direction, between your suggestions and some of the other posters i've come up with a build i'm fairly happy with. However, my build still includes Cloak of Fear, and I have to admit that the midigation is wonderful, it's part of the reason I decided to go with /DA.
  10. Wow, ok, and here I thought I was doing good *crawls away with tail tucked*, acutally, that's what I was looking for. I've spent the better part of 2 years playing controllers and have -no- idea how to set up a Brute properly, so, actually getting the SS part to the point where it was 'good' is an achievement in itself ... lol. But, thanks both for your input, I guess that build is the result of a lot of 'ooh, that looks good' digging through Mids. After looking at Ninja's build and taking into account what UnicyclePeon said, I came up with this build, is it any better?
