I started a Will/SS tanker about a month ago. i 50'd him in less than a week, and have been running him on endless TF ever since. All just using regular I/Os. Put one taunt in rise to the challenge, otherwise season to taste. its a solid set. He did have problems tanking Lord Recluse, and the AVs in the STF without lots insp/help.
Just slotted in a really expensive build, def cap for all but Psi. WOW. Tanked Recluse, all AVs, its weird it is so easy. Still have a prob with snakes in Apex, need to pop an orange for those things.
So yes, if you like a no button mashing primary, then this is your set. enjoy.
I originallly said regular I/Os, i meant SOs. Thats right, 3 weeks tanking endless 50 TF, using an SO build. And he did fine. -
yeah Dechs, i was tanking on Virtue when someone asked me about Dark armor, and i threw you under the bus. Much easioer than trying to describe all ins stuff in team chat lol.

Heyas. Thanks to everyone's help here I now have a softcapped defense Tank. Wow, a real joy to run.
This toon is my main, and will be for awhile. I want to make an alt build out for him for when I am the 3rd tank on a PUG, or for Tanker Tuesday type stuff. Just a pure damage Scranker build.
The parameters are these: Willpower/Super Strength with Energy Mastery. Budget no object. Massive damage build.
My own thoughts are to get 5 Purp sets and some LOTG to cycle my big attacks in faster. I ran my Brute SS/Will like that for a year and was fun. But after seeing how effective you guys are with that defense build I slammed in, i just gotta know what an expert thinks could be done with this thing. thanks in advance for the help. -
Thank you Demobot. Pleasure to do business with ya. Great transaction. But I thought this was supposed to have a bonus 1% for total +4% defense and Hami protection too?
-
I need a glad +3% def. I will pay 2.5 billion. Either post here or send a tell in game to Jefferey. thanks
-
Ah thanks Findullas. Told you I was new at the defense game. i see know that there is a steadfast Proc, that one makes sense then. the other two are garbage, and slotting 3 does not look worth it. i am taking energy mastery as a conceptual thing. this is a video game version of a character I am running in over the board play. the attacks don't fit, but I need the area effect, so some things you just gotta roll with lol. thanks for the hints at the other defense bonuses in armor sets. I will be looking at this over the next couple days. Once i get my defense softcapped, and my procs placed, i will take a hard look at the few slots i have left. According to Dechs then i should do everything I can to pump my health level to max. So, on this toon that is what i shall do. But i am definitely cutting a bit of waste here and there on this build. that extra 2 powers (dropping SS Punch -putting the enhancers in Fighting Punch, and the tier 9, which i better not need) grabbing the 2 extra slots not put into Steadfast protection, and probably one or 2 more finds as I examine this, to get me closer to maximum insanity for minimum investment, focused on DEF and health levels only. This guy will tank, and he will tank the bigtime. Thank god i have funds (I hope) to build a damage build for him though. I think i will only be happy running this build at super high endgame stuff. Other than that it is to focused on pure survivability.
-
I agree with getting physical perfection, dropping handclap (i have to check to see if the set in there is muling for def though) I need hurl as a filler heavy damage attack, also great ranged. i can usually Hurl and Vet Blackwand a surgeon to death without moving in 2 quick buttons, happy times. Resurgence needs to go agreed, if this super high defense build cannot run without that then I am gonna be fairly pissed. i am also thinking I should look at enhancing the Manuevers and Combat jumping up to near max, i mean, its global DEF in a DEF capped build. My 1st attempt at this, maybe its wrong, but it needs to be examined. I have the 4 sets of Kin Combat, the LOTGs, the Numinas. I have my 2 billion bid in for the Glad +3%, but no idea how long it will take to fill. Now just looking very carefully as I contemplate howthe rest of the puzzle fits together now that i have the main pieces lined up. Once i get it planned in MIDs will post it here. I will be glad to get this together. I stripped my Permadom for the money. (i am a brute/tank player anyways) I really wanted this build last night on a Statesman too lol. Then I will look at getting my regular combat build together for him.

I am about halfway thru buying enhancers to create this build I stole from Atomic Woman for my new Tank, which will be my main. I am making some modificatyions that make sense to me, like dropping SS-Punch, and throwing those enhancers in Fighting Punch, giving me an extra power pick. This guy will be my big tanky build for Statesman TF, MO attempts etc. I will create a Purp'd out damage build that will probably get the most use. It is based on my old SS/Will brute (and using most of those enhancers), but will be tougher, do less damage, and Exemplar down very well.
My questions on this build come from some of the stuff i do not understand. I really do not see the value of using 3 slots for steadfast protection in High Pain Tolerance. the set bonuses do not seem to justify it. And why is there no Numina +Heal/+Rec proc is this mega billion build? Any help understanding would be appreciated.
Dechs gave me this advice when i started down this road:
Quote:I am trying to adhere to this as I try to tailor this build to my concept. Does the tiny HP bonus from steadfast really justify the 3 slots? Especially when it semi gimps the power it is put in by not enhancing it well at all?Defense is far and away the best thing to build for. After that you want +Max HP. The last thing you should be building for as a Willpower Tanker is more regen.
When RttC gives you hundreds of regen percentage, a 10% bonus here and there won't make a drop in the bucket. Getting more max HP enhances the power of ALL of your regen. Defense, though, is the best because you begin to layer mitigation at that point. Fewer things hit you, so the regen becomes multiplied.
Quote:I'm pretty pumped at the numbers I've been able to massage out of my tank's (potential) build, but before I commit to it and start buying recipes I figured it would be a good idea to have it looked at by people that weren't so close to it.
Milestones:
- Softcapped S/L/F/C/E/N defense (35.5% Psi)
- 3,108 hit points
- 713% to 1144% regen (92 to 148 hp/sec)
- 2.71 end/sec net after toggles

Quote:"Break the rules" interesting. I know this is where i struggle to understand your logic. I love this game for the character generation screen. (wow-currently my main is a pretty boring toon i just realized lol). But I also love the whole Super Genre. Suiper powers, storylines, mad scientists, etc. This game just screams of the hokey storylines found in Venture brothers. Jeez, i love watching some megalomaniac MM walk up, I laugh at them for trying to look so all that, then march my obscenely muscled tank into a crowd and ignore all attacks. For me, this all makes sense in context. Including Hami "breaking the rules" because that is part of the Uber plot, and just fun. I see what you are trying to do, i just really do not get it.You're overthinking it.
And no, we've never tried a Hami raid. What would the point be? It's not like we can find 50 level 50 Hardcore characters, and the raid is designed to break the rules and inflict defeat on the characters all too easily -- you're not really "superpowered" against Hamidon. You're more like infantry in WWI. -
Planning 3 builds for my tank, a mostly capped defense build, a rech/damage heavy attack build, and a 25-45 level exemplared build. (Exemplared below 25 is easy mode anyways, with extra insp, and some globals at 10th) - actually my attack build may become my examplared build, because will probably run purple sets----just thinking out loud here.
My question is about the incarnate slots. I have never ran two buildouts before, much less three. Do Incarnate abilities carry across to each build, so one cardiac core is goood for all 3, or are they like enhancers and need to be separately achieved for each build? -
ach, you got me thinking. of my 3 builds i have planning this will be my "master run" build. So I will need travel powers and extra attacks in it. that said, i could still just transfer over the enhancers from SS-punch to Boxing Punch and drop SS-punch (prob picking up a travel power i think now) Unless i get rech-nerfed i should be fine for attacks, and with this much defense rech nerf should not hit often.
-
I have just 50'd my new main a Will/SS. I have been going over the forums lookig at old ss/will posts. this one is pretty impressive. I think i may just steal it lol. There are 2 modifications I would want to make for mine. I would drop SS/punch, because i have the 2 vet attacks, and just dont want another low ranking attack. I would switch the enhancers in that to Boxing-Punch. i would also drop Super Jump. I do not think losing the Winter Slow enhancer should F me over. Also, i have 3 fly temps at any one time, and the only time i lose them are for master attempts (and thankfully someone usually has TP on those) In place i would add Focused Accuracy for the tough spots, and Physical Perfection for grins. I see that the buildout offfere4d as an alternative has these, but I am actually not moving anything the way that does. Therefore this should operate exactly the same?
-
I must have misread you sorry. i thought you wrote that Invulnerabiltiy's resists were better than Willpower, and concluded that Invulnerabilty was better for team's than Willpower. My bad, sorry for the confusion.
-
Quote:I love Invulnerability, my first 50, but....... If you are talking using I/Os it has been pointed out that softcapping Def is so much more effective than softcapping resists that you are not even in the same ballpark for survivability. That is one of the reasons my new main Tank (now 48) is a Willpower. It has to do with the amount of damage you want to eat. take 20000 points of damage, in 20 1000 point shots. ouch. Invulnerability will (give a good def bump, say he has def that is effectively getting hit by 50%) so gets missed by half of this, so 10000, and eat 10% of that, so 1000 points. A softcapped def Willpower will get hit by 1000 and resist some of that, call it 30% for grins. 700 points actual damage. So, in this scenario the Invul takes 1,000 and the Will takes 700. the will is also regenerating like a wannabe wolverine. the Invul is gonna have to juggle to do heal management.Even with a softcap to S/L/N/E/F/C, your resists are low compared with Inv(which can also get softcapped S/L/N/E/F/C along with some psi protection) and you are more vulnerable to defense debuffs. You might have better solo capabilities due to your superior self healing, but in a team setting Inv trumps WP.
That is the short (and hopefully understood) version of why softcapped defense is better than softcapped resist by an order of magnitude. You are not even fighting the same fight, not playing by the same rules. -
Okay, I see the lure of this. There are at least a couple problems with it. 1st) it's totally honor system driven. i have gamed a lot. this can be a problem. 2) this is a super powered game. How do you justify using energy blasts from your hands that can flatten dozens, but not a power that rezzes you? How do you justify 27 people wailing on a tank while he stands there and mockingly berates them and laughs (obviously using no superpowers-right) because when he does fall no super powers are allowed. In essence what i am asking in #2 is, what is the plotline/ For the love of god, what universe/world is this that so many fantastic magical/scientific powers are available but when it come to death we are stone age?
-
Given the many "deaths" in the Marvel universe....and the subsequent storylines with those same dead characters, i am going with death is not forever. Some characters (just like in the cities) sorta die regular, but their power keeps bringing them back. Wolverine and Pheonix come right to mind, and of course I didn't even have to struggle to think of those. I am sure hardcore Marvelphiles will rattle off a few hundred others. (At least a few dozen) So by 'hardcore" are you saying no superpowers? (seems you may be in the wrong game)
-
For sheer synergy toughness without any I/O expenditure: Hands down Invulnerability / Dark Melee. I am talking strong. the Dark melee gives a heal to supllement Invulnerability's mega heal/Health boost that is also an attack. dark melee also has an End recovery attack to help with a tankers sometimes end hog power curve, and allows you to run the two fighting toggles with ease, for extra survivability. This frees up your 41-49 picks for more Aoe goodness. good luck.

Heyas, running a Will/SS, currently @ 43 and just using SOs. planning to pimp this guy out as my main with a Defense build, and an alt pure damage build. While i am still experimenting in the SO world i am experimenting with powers. How does the Defense toggle from Leadership rate for usefulness? Is it used when people softcap Def? 9i could squeeze it into the build i am sure if needed)
-
Ah, so it is not unthoughtful programming, just incompetent. Thanks for the clarification.
-
I played the game for 2 years and never used chat channels. Then I randomly (maybe not completely random) got invited to one of the best channels (IMO) on Freedom. Wow, what a difference.
I recently came back from taking 2 months off over the Winter Holiday and decided to try Virtue. In looking for a quality chat channel there I have discovered from reading the boards, and asking in game, that all the good ones appear full. Also, from what I understand the moderators cannot clear these of dead characters like you can with SGs. This seems really odd to me. After playing with a good chat channel for SF searches, I find myself unwilling to play without one. Yet I cannot get into one on Virtue it seems.
I have played this game a long time without Chat channels, and I have played it for awhile with a good chat channel. There is literally no comparison. To be able to team with people for months on Strike Force after Strike Force, know you can depend on them, know that you will finish with a full team, probably in much less time than anyone thought possible, is just incredible. Or, without a good channel, taking a couple friends and/or SG mates (if lucky), half a PUG team, and rolling the dice on what is gonna happen.
So, I am very frustrated that I get on Virtue and literally after 2 weeks have not found a channel that is active (much less good). Even more frustrating is to here tell of great channels (I do believe they exist) that are all full.
I have been asking for help lately in the Virtue server area, with similar responses to what I have heard in game.
To me it seems that this particular area of the game was programmed without anyone ever taking the time to realize the game might be successful or popular. Because a good channel is a game changer. Especially with issue 20 creating mega teams of 24. Like I wanna do that trial on a PUG. No way brother. I may have to head back to Freedom and the good channel I have there. But it seems really odd to be stuck on one server because no one programmed a super simple piece of code into the game. They've got graphics that coordinate shadows and water movements, but forgot to make it so the way to find quality teams over years of gaming works well. WTF (this does not mean Win The Future) Its like they left out the kick feature in SGs. Why, because no one would ever fill an SG or use them at all? This is actually worse than messing up the SGs, which I use but care little about. This is how I find if any of my gang of a couple hundred quality players are online and up for a quality Task Force run. Believe me, that part of the game I use. Like, anytime I am not currently in a TF. -
Thanks for the tip. It is really odd that any good chat channels are filled so that you cannot get into them. I mean, the game designers never planned for the game to get popular? Talk about programming for failure. Maybe Freedom had the same problem and i never encountered it. I never tried to use them, and I randomly got invited to one of the best channels on the server. Now that i know how cool that is in game I am desperately searching for one on Virtue. I may end up just going back to Freedom because with little effort I can get professional quality teammates for any Strike/Task force in the game. To have to stand around the RWZ or Cim and bellow for teams gets old after that.
-
Hey folks. I am brand new to Virtue, over from Freedom. I have 2 channels I use there, one of which is the bomb. I am looking for a few good channels for teaming on Virtue, concentrating mostly on strike forces. I am a veteran player, over 2 1/2 years steady. My Virtue character (will be my main for the next 6 months to a year) is a Will/SS Tank, currently at 38. I have consistently played brutes the last couple years, with a couple tanks that I use mostly for Hami raids. I created the tank because it is a new character I play in a storyline with my wife in over the tabletop gaming. I picked Virtue because I have been on Freedom for almost 2 years, and just wanted to try something different. This is not a RP character, although I tend to speak "in voice" when i am running him. Thanks for any TF channel suggestions. Also, you can private message me in game, the character's name is "Jefferey', and so is my global.
-
Yeah. I have no idea where to find the list of Global Channels. From a cursory read of this thread it appears they are all full.
-
ROFLmao. You just got successfully taunted by a tanker.
-
I am new to Virtue, over from Freedom. On Freedom I have 2 channels (one has ben a true godsend, very very great players). i want to give Virtue a good run, but am having trouble finding any good teams. Normal PUG TFs are what I have been running. Currently on a 37 Tank that will be my main. The 2 task forces I have managed to land went very well, a 2:45 Synapse on superbowl sunday, and a ITF kill most Monday night. Good groups both of them, more mature than general PUG teams on Freedom, but maybe i got lucky. But I am still having problems getting on-line and quickly finding a team. Last night I was not able to get a single TF, though i looked for 2 hours. Any help.
