Quote:Lets see. Take a very complicated game, where you design and enhance character in increasingly complex ways. Have your player base challenged by increasingly tough PvE mobs.Little Johnny (or any new or sufficiently inexperienced PvPer) is going to have NO clue and if he's also a person that is iffy on the whole PvP thing from the get-go,he's going to have a seriously sucktastic time and will be even more convinced
that PvP is this game is assinine.

Okay, now make some zones where they can fight each other. BUT WAIT. Change every single rule about how everything operates. heh. BUT WAIT! THERE IS MORE. Do not, repeat, DO NOT tell the player entering that zone that every single one of their powers now operates completely differently. ROFLMAO Okay, I gotta end this now, can't breath... -
What we need is robotic weapon gun arms for Assault Rifle and Beam Rifle. Take a look at Armored Core and Mechwarrior.
-
For those that are following it I do indeed know I am all over the board in this. Wanting survival, now looking at just pure ranged AoE. Its part of my marked frustration with the entire thing. But I feel I have tried and tried to get this thing to work, approaching it from different angles. I'll hit Fire/Psi Blast. Maybe I'll have some fun just laying out pain.
-
I've been on monthly renewal for 4 and a half years. 4 yr vet was awarded at the big change. You guys get this straightened out so I get my #5 in a few months, ya hear?
-
Wow. If you look at a power and it requires more than 200% bonus above the 100% you are given, and you still think you can do it... Just wow. And gratz if you do.
-
I took another detailed look at it. My 100th??? I compared every Primary and Secondary, looking for the most Aoe Range. I left out Archery, AR, BR, and Devices. Not saying they are not good choices, but they do not fit my super concept at all.
I came up with Fire/Psi. Probably not a shock to many of you. In fact a few of you have throw it out to me before, of course. I'll have 4 big range AoE attacks I can spam before even hitting epics. Fireball, Fire Breath, Rain of Fire, and Psychic Scream. I really want to avoid close contact for the most part. However, with 4 years experience, I know when its safe to drop in for a free leech with Drain Psyche. I will get Psychic Shockwave and concentration, of course. I will start looking at epics or patrons next. Ranged AoE is what I am looking for. Not sure how much I will throw at the build, if anything besides SOs. Just gonna play test it for a couple weeks, sorta relaxed. (I am currently endlesssly iTrialing my new main) This will be the off hand project.
Now I just need a concept. (I always build backwards) Demon/supernatural seems the natural here. Going to do a little research on-line for ideas. -
Its the exact same formula. You just need to look at it different. The Recharge Time in the Formula you want to be equal to duration. so, just plug in the numbers until it matches, that is the number you need.
RechargeTime = BaseRechargeTime / ( 100% + Buffs - Debuffs )
So, for Brute Dull pain the Recharge time is 360s. The duration is 120s. You want Recharge time to be 120s.
120 = 360 / ( 100% + X ), when x is 200 the denominator is 3, dividing 360/3 which gives you the 120s you are shooting for.
Another way of saying this is to make Duration = D, and Base Recharge = BR. In this case 120=D, and 360 = BR. The formula would be D = BR / (100% + X ). Rewritten this formula is ( BR / D ) = ( 100% + X ). That tells you that you need Base Recharge/Duration to equal ( 100% + X ). In this case 360/120 = 3. So ( 100% + X ) needs to be 300%, and X needs to be 200%
So, always divide your Base Recharge by the Duration. This gives you a number, in this case 3. The percentage needs to be that number, and you start with a 100% free. -
It has been stated by finer minds than mine (and said better) that at extremely high levels magic is indistinguishable from technology. therefore, obviously, you should make him a robot, and tech origin.

Quote:You are right, I am limiting my choices. I really actually love the mechanics of both AR and BR. But I just dont see Magneto with a Gat. If they would alter the animations for AR or BR to be "standarad blaster animations" I would take either in an instant, I love them both.Honestly, I believe the main reason you had trouble was that you were trying to play a pure ranged Blaster without allowing yourself to use the sets that are actually best for a pure ranged Blaster. Archery is, bar none, the best option for an all ranged Blaster (and Assault Rifle is one of the next best). You get the single best ranged AoE attack in the game (Rain of Arrows), a complete single target chain with an 80 foot base range, and a longer than normal cone attack to go with your standard targeted AoE shot. You even get a decent ranged stun for Sappers or mezzing Lts. Add in /Energy for Boost Range and Hover and you simply don't have to get close to things at all. The key is getting plenty of Ranged defense and some decent recharge... which brings up the number one rule of soloing as a Blaster:
Solo Blasters that actually fight large spawns require high end IO builds.
There's no such thing as a decent cheap solo Blaster if you are used to Scrappers and Brutes. Mowing down +1/x6 or so spawns at the speed of an average Scrapper is possible, but will require either softcapped defense or high recharge and a crashless nuke (and some defense).
That still leaves the secondaries as a heaving mosh pit of Blapper love. Not sure what to do about that easily.
Lastly, and i hate to admit this, I was struggling with +0/x1. And for the Banks (badging) was even struggling at -1/x1. And my build had hover, stealth, and invisibility. Okay, I'm gonna shut up now. Sigh. -
Quote:That was a really good post. I thank you for the time you put into it. But it went sideways (and I think you know this) with pretty much the first sentence here. Not your fault, you are absolutely correct. Blasters are not built to be Ranged, no matter how big the letters "Ranged" get in character creator, or how many times it is said they are Ranged. Blasters are purely designed as Blappers. If you want to make it Ranged you have to accept some sacrifices (usually at least some AoE damage, definitely ST damage, and many times a lot of neat buffs go out the window as well.)Actually Blue the problem may be that you don't understand the blaster (or blapper) playstyle. That's not a bad thing it just takes practice.
My main is an Energy/Energy/Force Blapper.
To me it is a giant con. I really hate to be conned. The more they say Ranged the more I feel conned. If they just said Blapper, or High Damage Character w/ some Ranged powers, or even just called them Blasters. But nope, they keep insisting the thing is Ranged. Either they are stupid or they think I am. It aint ranged. -
Yeah. I love SS. SS is on my new main, a tricked out SS/Invul. (thank you Scene EU for the Bones of the build) But SS is not the best DPS Brute Primary. there are people who look at arcanatime, look at optimal attack chains, and do spreadsheets on this stuff. I do enough bookkeeping at work lol. I make cool characters and mash buttons. But after 4 years in the cities, seruiously well over a year of that time on one SS Brute or another, I can tell you, it aint the best. I would look at Claws, Fire, or Dark. But again, that is just word on the street. I know Claws and Dark come in real close to the top I know, Fire I threw in cause its best everywhere else. I use Dark myself quite a bit, and its a mean little set. But I am unsure exactly what is the best, just know it ain't SS. (Now if we could get the Devs to axe the drop...)
This is another thing that goes away from your discussion, because it's not a primary thing, but I think it might add to the discussion. SS is much better for Vets than non vets. And the longer the vet, the sweeter the set. I have 3 high damage attacks to use during Rage drop. So, my DPS does bot suffer significantly during that time. (Except in huge combats where I may miss the tells I am in Drop time...) Also, as was pointed out earlier in the thread, the constant +ACC in Rage allows you to take that off the table of what needs to be enhanced in a strong build. Very nice.
But every set has little things like this that if you know how to use their strengths you will benefit much more than someone just throwing it on and mashing buttons. Except that set...(doesnt say it, wont take the flak lol) -
Can a free to play player have more than one costume slot, and if so how many?
-
Argh lol, I was about to run to Wiki and look for a FF corruptor. I don't mind dieing, I dont love it, but meh. I do have a problem soloing because of the squishiness, but have decided I just will not ever solo with the Blaster. I've got a Brute for tips, badging, etc. I want to stay at Range, period. I also want him to be somewhat durable. Thats my whole concept for the build. Really seriously peeved everytime I go to create a character in the game and it says "Ranged". I don't think that word means what they think it means. I am back to considering Blasters because in the end I will add nothing to teams as a pure Ranged melee, it just is unfair. But I can still take quite a few things and use build tricks to make a sturdy Blaster.
-
thx for the heads up. I was actually considering a HP Lovecraft themed villainous Blaster for a sec. But if it has the same prob that I am working with on Blasters I will stay with Blasters.

Quote:Wow, this opens a huge discussion. In short, it ain't that simple. I am horrid at this, but I'll give you a thumbnail of what I understand.Speaking of Secondaries.... in short: Defense sets for Scrappers and Resist Sets for Brutes?
Damage mitigation in CityofX comes in 3 flavors, Defense (not getting hit), Resist (ignoring some of what hits you ) and "I got better" (Healing). It is always best to have all 3.
softcapping Defense is the benchmark for survivability in most builds. You can almost never softcap to everything however, and seeking to softcaop can lead you into a weird looking build if youre not careful.
Resist is near impossible to cap, except for oddities like fire armor to fire damage. But more is always better, seeking more (throwing a ton of work into it) is usually bad, but putting a couple resist enhancers in your resist powers is rarely a bad idea.
Healing, this depends a lot on your secondary, possibly your epic, and maybe quite a bit on how much you I/o it.
Pure Defense sets either Scrapper or Brute are great, right up uintil you get hit. they have no resist, or little, and sometimes not enough healing. An alpha that gets thru is ugly time. However I hear that a full I/O Shield set is a joy to run.
The only pure resist set I can think of is Stone, Granite. I wont run it, dont know much about it, it may even have some def. I tend to run Invulnerability, and add as much Defense as I can to it. I have also run Willpower, softcapping a Will Tank once. It was a god, ran it for 3 months.
Pure heal sets, wow, I love the idea, have never ran one, and do not plan to. How do they live?
In my understanding Archtype is rarely important for secondaries, except at the extremes. Resist caps are lower for Scrappers, but that is rarelyt a problem. Health is higher for Brutes, especially the cap. So if you plan to stack Invul's Heal, (a lot) go Brute. But in general I believe most secondaries perform very much the same on either archtype, at least for survivability. For damage dealing (damage auras), it changes a lot. -
Quote:You have to remember Blasters have a secondary that largely puts them in the thick of melee
This was part of my problem. I tried for weeks to get a Blaster going that was pure range. With the forums help finally settled on Ice/Energy. But was not happy with it. I have a number of issues in looking for the perfect match. Guns are right out, I hate redraw. Plus, I still dont see my concept pulling a rifle. So very very petty. Arrows? Great if youre a greek god I guess, or some other medieval diety. Otherwise, a bow, really? oh, yeah, and redraw. I may look around at the pure Blasters again, and just see what power sets I love the most, and not take all the powers, then build for tankiness. That will probably be where I have to go. It will never be a fire/fire Blaster. But if I am happy playing it then I will have succeeded. And I'll have a cape!
PS, great suggestion about the Khelds. Unfortunately I have read HP Lovecraft, and the creator who came up with Khelds obviously had no idea that whatever they were looking at that inspired this storyline was in fact a rip off of ol' HP, and the entire storyline to me belongs redside rather than blueside. Like I said, I got issues. But seriously, squids? Am I the only gamer that has read gothic horror? -
I'll farm for cash and buy them off the market at market price as they come available. That way I'll be converting something I enjoy (high end game content on almost any map) into these I/Os instead of spending real cash (spending real cash with a .001% chance of getting the I/O i really want at that....)
Personally I think anyone who buys these lottery packs is either rich, stupid, or both. -
The OP has made it clear that we are not talking about synergistically creating the highest DPS brute. The OP wants the highest DPS Primary. This leaves out vet attacks to patch the SS Rage hole. It leaves out the effect of SS Rage on secondary and Epic pool damage. As well as many other favorite (and accurate) build tricks that really work in PvE.
You might as well ask which single attack from a Brute primary does the most damage. Don't use any Buffs/tricks/etc. It is an isolated question, asked for its own merits. PS, does anyone know that one off hand? -
Quote:It's almost entirely a min/max question, and the responses are showing it. In a slight nudge to the conversation it is said that Kinetic Melee is better on Scrappers because of how the crit was changed for the top end power to reboot the power boost. Are you talking about stuff like that? Where because of the different power write up or how the power interacts with the archtype it makes a difference which archtype you choose? For instance I would assume Energy Melee is better on a Brute because it can absorb the self inflicted wound better. (Who wrote that set?)than on a scrapper and vice versa?
I am in no way a min/max player, but I love both ATs and really like to understand the mechanics that are behind some powersets. I heard that claws is better on a Brute while elec melee is better on a Scrapper? How can you tell? Is there some information on this (I did not find anything specific using search)?
Any help and insights on this would really be appreciated. -
I have a build with 2 attacks that will rarely be used. Kick and Brawl. Both single enhancement slot only. I was thinking of putting a Touch of Death Proc in there. But it's only a 15% chance for damage. I could just throw an damage I/o in there. The build is such I do not need accuracy. I suppose something like a damage/recharge Hami is possible, since the only time I can conceive going to these attacks are when my RECH has been nerfed into oblivion. Any thoughts?
-
well, 10' is right on top of the mob. I use a +stealth for running through missions like an idiot, but I normally try to not get nearer than a guestimated 3x what I need for KO Blow. Depending on the mob type, map layout, and luck this sometimes works like a dream or is just gonna be "let me pull the entire map right here so we can get this over with..."
-
If you respec and keep the enhancers on the same character, they stay at the boosted level as I understand it. If you want to move them to another character you have to destroy the booster. the source I got that from said it is an unproven technology, i.e., do not boost purps and be sure you can move them later. When you respec you can tray the things, but cannot move them off the character. So, ALT build is possible. Thats what I have figured so far. I could be wrong on all of it.
PS, thanks for the mids help. I guess I'll take it as a win that no matter how I cram +s onto the build it has almost no effect. -
Wow. I/O coolness that are randomly dispensed via a pay for lottery like system? seriously? And I seriously thought PvP was the stupidest idea I ever saw from CityofX. Well, it was. Until now.
Marketing wise I am sure they will make money, so from a greed based management decision I get it. After all, there are people who will spend thousands of dollars rolling randomly to get exactly what they want. If they want to go this route they should just sell a Boutique level of the game where you pay them 500-1000 for one or two characters. You get a rep who helps you design the thing, load it with all the best enhancers, and 50 it. There, play it. But for the rest of us having a new currency or new toy (AT specific I/Os) put in the game that are only achievable randomly by spending RMT is about as stupid as it gets. -
Quote:Sigh, this makes me a little sad. I just imploded my SS/Fire?Mu Brute, who was pimp'd, purp'd, and Incarnated out. I just wasn't playing him for 6 months. I grabbed 1/3 of his stuff for my new main. I may need to look at Blasters again, not for "running the entire course", but as just a team player when I want to sit back and unleash hell.Don't sweat it. There is very little succeeding with blasters. You need redefine your victory conditions before you start playing them. I like to think of them, when I am feeling charitable, as pitching wedges or putters, you could use them to play an entire course but you really wouldn't want to.
Anyway top of the hit parade for tank mages is SS/Fire/Mu/Spiritual/Ageless brutes, another high damage and able to survive whatever is thrown at it would be either a fire/shield/fire scrapper or an electrical melee/shield/fire scrapper.
The damage output is as good as anything you will get with a blaster and survivability is off the scale in comparison.
Seeing as they are talking about making resistance meaningful relative to defense, the brutes and scrappers will just be pulling even further ahead in terms of survivability. -
Quote:Nice, Doc. I started poking around Wiki and was looking at Kin/Dark/Mu Brute. I dont think the monster can walk and maul people at the same time though. Electric might be able to.Pick up the Brute Mu mastery pool at level 35 - you'll get three ranged area attacks and a single target Lightning Bolt. Go Kinetic Melee for an extra single target attack and Repulsing Torrent. (If you're a knockback hater dont use it until you have Electric Fences from Mu)
For an armour set you wnat one with a disposal Tier 8 and 9, so you can start taking patron powers at level 35 onwards.
I'd recommend a Kinetic/Electic/Mu brute maybe?
