  2. I like what they said about Hartman's impersonation of Sinatra: He was horrible at impersonating the actual person, but was great at impersonating and lampooning Sinatra's image.

    Basically, yeah.

I think it also feeds into the distaste some have for "awkward" humor. Some people find cringeworthy humor, well, cringeworthy. Cera and his movie choices/roles always have that tinge to them. The cringe-tinge!

Jolie has the world's most recognizable knees!
  5. I am sure a character will say "They sunk out Battleship!" and the aliens angle makes it viable that the ships will be attacked from the air, in straight lasers, mimicking the red pegs one uses in the game.
  6. I think the Cera hate comes from him playing basically the same character (not in my mind) in every movie: an awkward teenager/young man who has the same tics and characteristics as George Michael Bluth. Basically, Cera can't act.

Also, some AD fans didn't take to kindly to Cera saying not only would a movie never happen, he doesn't want to do the movie. He has since said that he was only worried that a movie would be lower in quality than the show and didn't want to hurt the show's legacy.

    First you get the sugar,
    Then you get the money,
    Then you get the power.
  8. Interesting idea for a flick, especially if they stick with the "told through the dog's eyes" angle.
  9. Next headline:

"Will Universal say 'Sorry' about 'Battleship' movie and make 'Sorry' instead?"

I don't know if we have gone off the deep end or are wallowing the shallows.
  12. Honestly, the Cera hate/backlash probably only affected the "in the know" fans. Like you said, like the ones who frequent these sorts of boards. You sub in another young B-lister (and really, who out there doesn't have backlash? Shia, R-Pat, Jesse Eisenburg) and I doubt it goes from placing 5th to 1st. Heck, I doubt it goes from 5th to 4th.

Why is Solid Snake photoshopped onto the still from a Simpsons episode?

Exactly. Which is why I give it a fighting chance to open huge. Well, relatively huge.
  16. Vampires Suck won't open number one. It may open in the top 5. The [Blank] Movie movies keep on getting made not because of big BO, but because they are relatively cheap to make and recoup those expensives during their runs.

I expect the Expendables and Eat, Pray, Love to fight it out for number one again next weekend, with an outside shot for Piranhas 3D (which may suffer from the same problem SPvsTW: lots of good buzz within the geekosphere, very little talk outside of it) or Nanny McPhee (never underestimate kiddie flicks, especially this time of year when they are back from summer camps and right before school starts again)

There is a slight possibility that through word of mouth it manages to hold onto or increase its BO despite new releases and sticks around, despite not opening at number one. There's Something About Mary did this, not getting the number one slot until maybe its 4th or 5th week of release.

I don't think that's going to happen with this movie, but one of the advantages of opening this late, near the end of the summer season when studios start dumping films is that you don't have 7 evil blockbusters waiting to take you on for the right to make some dough.
  18. Basically, both the Expendables and Eat, Pray, Love were going to kick Scott Pilgrim's butt because EPL draws in the females and has a big box office star in Julia Roberts and The Expendables have the "red blooded" male audience with a big action star in Sly.

SPvTW is a niche-type film, with no big stars, with limited appeal across generations. It is Cloverfield-like in that its characters are twentysomethings (or younger), it is an "odd" film and the story sorta takes a backseat to how the movie is made. Releasing it in the wintertime, when there is lesscompetition may have boasted its take, but again, it dpeends on what exact movies it would be going against.

In fact the only bits I liked were the nosegun scene and the shotgun.
Though I didn't like that scene, mainly due to Rourke's acting, it does fit the movie in that it provides the motivation for the Reluctant Hero in the archetype of a typical 80s action movie.

Though I thought the motivation would come from learning that Sandra was taken plus Gunner killing Rourke's character. But then again, I forgot that other action cliche: the good guys always survive.

    The Expendables

This is a movie that doesn't try to be anything other than a cheesy, fun action movie. I could tell the story beats way before hand, but since they were delivered with explosions and blood, and I loved it.

You want brainless? This was brainless, and great brainless!
  21. I too loved the movie. I feel like it is an American version of Kung Fu Hustle (in spirit) with the over-the-top action sequences mixed well with the "realer" parts. In fact, I loved how as soon as things seemed to settling into a normal scene or joke, there would be a slight twist (a sound effect or graphic) and it would seem all the more sillier.

The one complaint I had was not directly with the movie: the sound was slightly wobbly, I think in the backing track. So most of the dialogue was fine but some of the sound effects and backgroumd music sounded garbled. For any other movie it probably wouldn't be so bad, but there was a lot of cool backing stuff.

How could I not love a movie that opened with the Universal logo and theme song done in an 8-bit style? AND WITH THE ZELDA MUSIC FROM A LINK TO THE PAST!
