Im not saying that it would be easy to create the model/body types. I never said it was easy for them to create the 3 body types that are already there, you just made that assumption.
Making one body type would be equally as difficult as making another one.
As far as the difficulty with costume options. There is no need to provide all costume options for all combinations.
City of Heroes/Villains doesnt even do this at the moment.
Eg - You cant have Trenchcoat & Wings
This is because of practical reasons, I wont pretend to know the exacts behind it, but I suspect it stems from the fact that a trenchcoat wouldnt look all that good with wings sticking out through its back.
In the same way, Wheelchair doesnt necessarily need to have all the same options that are currently available.
Providing WheelChair as a lower body option, and just limiting the different clothing options would make it possible.
Note - Even if we dont want to go into wheelchair options because of the potential issues with disabled characters jumping over rails, there is no reason not to provide hover chairs then. We have longbow chaser fighter aircrafts, which would be around the same size as a hover chair, just shove a visible npc figure on it, and call it a hover chair.
Note - this approach gets closer to mounts than actual disabilitys.
However, I think that players should be able to design their mission givers, or mission npcs how they like. Mission Givers dont necessarily have to move.
However I do acknowledge that the ones in the game, with the yellow circles around their feet do have all the available animations that other characters do. (You can test it with the demo player - change your model to sister psyche and you can see that you get the yellow contact circle, but still have the animations everyone else has.
It limits our story giving ability if we cannot give them props, or real life issues.
[ QUOTE ]
If you want mobility disabilities, put them on a bench with a sit animation and have them say they needed help getting there.
[/ QUOTE ]
Can we currently do this? Or will we be able to do this?
I havent heard anything about being able to assign npc's with animations or setting them to be sitting down.
If giving them orders to sit in a chair was possible, then giving them orders to sit in a wheelchair would be equally possible, and that would be problem solved. -
Even if we move away from the idea of wheelchairs for players, you have to admit that it permits role play opertunities if npc's could have it.
Whilst models might have to be made for it, and animations might have to be made, I think it would provide an overall boost of realism in a plastic universe.
Other games such as Spiderman Web of Shadows - Has limited scenes of wheelchairs in use, its just ignorant to assume that having wheelchair use shown in gameplay is offensive to everyone. There are valid story lines, and story telling reasons to have the ability to give your npc's maladies, and illnesses, and disabilities.
Mission Giver - A Hero who got paralyzed by a curse from the Circle of Thorns. (hes in a wheel-chair)
Mission: Please go retrieve this magical crystal, and return it to me so I might regain the use of my legs.
Next Mission: Paralyzed hero miraculously can walk, and actually shows up at end of mission, as an ally.
Providing wheelchairs wouldnt be any more harder than providing female, male, and huge body types.
Or just making a new lower body option for npcs. -
Well, I think we all agree then, that there is no GOOD reason that they deny customizable pet costumes.
They are allowing us to customize entire costume for villain groups for crying out loud, which could be 12+ costumes per story arc, whats with allowing a player to store costume creations for their minions.
Note - For anyone who has made demo recordings, you might be aware that the costume of a character appears at most as 30 lines of text. Thats it.
This is a player I encountered a year or so ago. I still had the demo file. This is what the data is for their costume.

All would be required, would be this x 3 for a mastermind. Assuming you wanted 1 for each type of minion, or if you wanted 6 costumes, for each individual minion. -
In all seriousness.
Some players like to create toons that reflect them.
Im not saying that every disabled kid wants to envision their alter ego as also a vertically challenged person, however the possibility exists that a player who is disabled, might want their disability to be part of their characters history/costume.
Good writers often draw from their own lives, and now that Architect is going up soon, I think its kinda unfair that the creators limit peoples creativity by having such a limited view on what should be in the costume selections for npcs.
Maybe I wana make a mission where a player has to rescue the wheelchair bound npc.
Or maybe I wana make a new villain group that composes of completely disabled npcs.
The Free-Wheelers they could be called.
Attacking with rifles like longbow weapons, with secondary attack power called 'Shin Shredder' where their wheelchair pretty much rams into the players shins causing crushing damage.
Note - I cant remember for sure.. but I think I remember seeing either wheelchairs or medical beds in the hospital in paragon city.
Not sure. -
How about walking sticks then.
Make it a prop for scrappers and stalkers.
Instead of a sword... a stick.
No matter how advanced their medical tech is, I still havent seen any elderly people being carted around npc wise.
Or limping with a walking stick.
Its like they have implimented my
'anti recession burn the old people scenario'
Burn them when they are no longer useful to society, use the heat generated to boil water, make electricity, and scatter the ashes as fertilizer.
What do you think powers the war walls around Paragon City. ;-)
Lack of old people in the city... coincidence? I think not. -
Get them to hire a real DJ.
Hey isnt there a radio channel devoted to city of heroes or somthing?
Paragon Radio?
Why not give them control over the music in pocket d.
However, the problem there is bandwidth.
Music streamed to that zone, would cause lag, and plenty of it.
The only way to reduce this, is to reduce the sound quality, and therefore, you get grainy music, and no one likes that.
Unless there was a pre-set selection of music/sounds downloaded to players pc in each patch, and the dj just controls which ones plays.
Imagine being able to make requests to the dj. Lol
The idea behind playing your own music isnt entirely original, Black and White the game did something similar, you could put a music cd in th drive, and your creature would dance to the music.
There is nothing peventing the developers letting the players do something similar, I mean, we can already alt-tab and run an mp3 in the background, I just think the idea behind integrating this into pocket d would be more benficial to the city of heroes/villains franchise, it makes the zone nicer, more interesting, and players might actually go there, to listen to their music.
Other ideas spring to mind, however they might not be legally sound copyright wise.
You could have a friend with you in pocket d, and let them listen to your music. But that might be classed as music/file sharing, or the broadcasting of music - which is sometimes mentioned on music discs and dvds as being prohibited.
eg "This dvd/cd is not for resale, rental, or public broadcast".
Still.. the listening to your own music, would be a quick and dirty way to give pocket d a much needed revitalization. -
Could have sworn I saw disabled signs somewhere, even if the sign was for huge, I guess that means that the paragon health service is so great that they dont have a single paralyzed person.
I know there is a limit to the amount of depth that should be put into a game, but at the minute, everything looks too polished, and too shiny and perfect.
The game doesnt look like a game of comic characters, comic characters are realistic, they get injured, they have illnesses, they occasionally need a walking stick.
This is a game of action figurings, they should just scrap the City of heroes comics, since the game resembles nothing comic like at all. Even the hair on characters resembles action figurings. The more I think about it, this game is more like Toy Soldiers than a comic game, there is an idea for a mission architect arc.
Buzz-Lightyear = Sky-Raider
Mr Potato-Head = Banished Patheleon Totem.
What If I want my mission giving npc, to be seated in a wheelchair.... Thats a VALID reason to get wheel chairs in as a costume piece. Even if its just for npcs.
I seriously think the City of x series needs an overhaul on realism, to get away from the plastic looking world. Textures are just ugly. Its like they designed everything with the computer systems of 7 years ago in mind. -
Occurs to me that one of the things that people love most about the vet rewards is, is the oppertunity to get temporary powers, as permanent powers.
Perhaps an examination of what the favorite tempoary powers are?
I volunteer the Sapper Rifle. It is wicked for pvp.
Failing that, a void rifle would be my second choice. I know they are toned down now days, however, it has to be one of the nicer looking weapons in the game.
Failing temporary powers being made permanent, perhaps special enhancements, or recipies given to characters/players when they have completed enough months of payed/played time. Creating new recipies that could only be acquired in this fassion would open up a new market on the Black Market/Wentworths.
However, exploitation would be rife, after all, since the reward is available to new toons too, you could create unlimited amount of them... which means an enhancement/recipie idea might be a bit bad.
How about an extra power choice?
Eg - Go into badge menu, and in the same method you would select 'claim bonus powers', you could select 'redeem bonus power' or something.
Then fly to a trainer, and have 1 power available to select from any pool/powerset that you have at your disposal.
This then opens the possiblity of gaining enhancement slots from additional months of play time too. However, we are not talking along the lines of getting slots every 3 months, but maybe granting 1 ever 9-12 months or more.
It makes perfect sense that once you get to level 50, your powers should continue to grow with time, to simulate your character growing more powerful with time and age. -
I agree that we need more music in Pocket D.
It must be the only night club I know, that has the one track on loop.
Perhaps even making it possible for players to have their own music on their computer play in pocket d.
It wouldnt require uploading any music, and would not infringe on any copyright laws at all.
1. The Music 'should' be playing from pre-determined 3 dimensional locations in the level. Eg - From a sound speaker in Pocket D.
2. The Music on your computer would be assumed to be legal, or media usage rights would be verified. Either way, if the music is on your computer, you have the music anyhow, all city of heroes would be doing, is playing it.
All you would be doing, would be feeding music from your pc, into city of heroes client, and it gets played from the 3d locations in the pocket d area. The End result is the illusion of your own music playing throughout pocket d. -
Correct me if im wrong. But....
Lightning Rod makes you get struck by lightning? Doesnt it?
That in itself would knock you back.
It was probably a developer decision to add the vulnerability to knock back as a way of simulating the knockback effect you might get after being struck by lightning.
They can't after all, just knock you back with your own attack, that would be seen as a folly, and players would just not choose that power, so instead of a straight knockback, they made you more vulnerable to knockback instead to increase the chance of a knockback, but at the same time, not knocking you back with your own attack. -
[ QUOTE ]
Why do you think they are limiting players to 3 architect arcs, because of storage space per a player would be quite large.
[/ QUOTE ]
I think I noted it first. Lol -
[ QUOTE ]
The reason we don't have robes and other costume pieces in the game is because some power animations would look crappy/off/odd with them.
[/ QUOTE ]
If this is the reason, then it is just the developers cutting corners because of difficulty.
I work for a global technology firm, and I know how acquisitions work. If your in house developers are in capable of doing something themselves, they should either buy the technology from another firm, call it their own, or buy over a failing company that can pull of what you want in order to get the technical know-how, and the staff that can do it.
Its just unacceptable to say
'Oh.. that sounds pretty hard to do, so lets not do it.'
With that attitude, the game will just devolve and fail to get any better. -
I dunno, a flip kick in a wheelchair might look visually impressive.
Professor X in X-men Mutant Accadamy was in no way a push over on the PS2. He was very adept at slamming his wheelchair/hover chair into opponents.
Note - This is not about trying to replicate Professor X.
However, it is interesting to note that not a single npc that walks around Paragon City is wheelchair bound, and yet they have disabled signs on toilets in the missions, except cave missions, cause the toilet there is likely just behind a rock. Clearly a small oversight on the designer/creators part. -
I wouldnt say 'never'.
Technology and Software restrictions are becoming more flexible everyday.
2 Years ago, if the developers were given the idea of creating a mission editor, where you could design the costume of all the npc mobs, they might have laughed.
If the ability to customize npc mobs exists, it is most certainly possible to customize your minions, its not a case of the developers cant, its just a case of they wont, because it would involve massive storage requirements. Why do you think they are limiting players to 3 architect arcs, because of storage space per a player would be quite large.
If the developers invested heavily in storage space, they COULD provide customizable minions using the costume creator, in the EXACT same method the npc mobs are getting in issue 14. -
Sign me up if you are looking for lvl50 Fortunata loaded with purple inventions.
I also have Vengeance which will more than likely come in handy since someone is bound to die. -
This will no doubt be met with controversy, but here goes anyhow.
Has anyone ever thought about introducing wheelchairs as costume options?
I mean, we have hairy monster legs, we have scaley monster legs, we have naked legs, why not provide the costume options for creating 'no legs' or legs that just dont work as well as other peoples legs.
Before people jump down my throat, I am not joking.
Many comic characters have afflictions which result in their appearance being disfigured, or disabled.
Positron himself hides his form in a suit, to contain his uncontrolable power.
A certain comic character springs to mind who was also disabled from the waist down.
In terms of practicality as far as getting around goes.
1. Hover Chairs instead of wheel chairs - Hover above the ground, but still move at same rate as running.
2. Provides new concept for travel powers - Rocket Chairs, or Chair that grows wings and blasts off, teleporting chairs, bouncy chairs, the list goes on.
3. New Level Designs could be made to be ergonomically acceptable to the vertically challenged. Disabled Persons Lifts/Elevators.
Has no one else noticed that Paragon City seems to be a utopia where disability does not exist at all? If this is the case... why do they clearly have disabled toilets in the missions?
Surely we should have some sort of costume designs available to make the characters reflect how we want them to appear. Forget about potentially infringing on copyright of marvel characters, marvel does not have a copyright claim on wheelchairs so there is absolutly no issue there.
Instead think about the little disabled boy who sits infront of his computer wishing that he could have his character look like him, without legs, and still be a hero.
Thank you for your time.
Please note, although sarcasm is present here, I am totally serious in the idea that wheelchairs could become a lower body option for characters.
Granted, I cant see many brutes or tanks in wheelchairs, but it is open for creative license. -
Has anyone heard any of the following?
1) I know it has been said that you can choose the villain group in missions, but can you choose the power group for boss entities? Eg - I dont want to fight a Longbow Warden, I want to make a custom boss character for the mission boss, and make him have storm summoning and gravity control, is this do-able?
2) Can their be 2 enemy groups on a mission map? We have seen in Developer created maps that we can have the Fir Bolg and the Tuanan demons fighting eachother, would it be possible for us to script our own missions like this? If so, I can see large scale maps being made by players and probably myself, which have longbow vs Arachnos - Like a BattleField.
3) Temporary powers? - We have got mission related temp powers before, would there be any chance of being able to design our own powers for missions that we create. Obviously there would be the restriction of not being allowed to take it out of the mission, since that could lead to exploitation, but it could be a good addition if players could make missions only compleatable with certain temp powers.
Or maybe just allow players to choose from a list of already existing temp powers that exist for players to use in the missions?
Eg - Nictus Extermination - All Team Members get 10 shot Void Rifles.
I especially would like to get my hands on a Sapper Gun again - They are sooooo fun in PVP.
Old friend was flying above me, and I sapped him, and ....he was no longer flying. Lol
4) Story Arc Rewards - Have we heard if we will be able to grant any rewards greater than badges for story arc completion? Eg - Accolade powers, or Temp Powers?
Granted, you could argue that it could be exploited by a player making a mission, and making it easy. But I can also see the developers purposly making the mission creator impossible to exploit by making the level ranges dynamic, so any mission to create will always pose a threat to players. So.. no chance of overly too easy missions. Maybe easy villain groups, but that would be the same with any mission. If a group of players completed a 25 mission long story arc, created by a player, who was very very creative, and managed to keep the players playing, then surely the players who were playing the mission deserve a similar reward as they would have got during a normal mission arc of that length. Of course, most mission arc's of that length are TF/SF and they result in respec's. Any chance of us getting similar rewards for completion of story arcs?
5) At the minute the IO Set's are in pools of rarity. Is there any chance we get to select the pool of rarity for our mission/story arc? Or would it be possible for this to be chosen based on difficulty calculated?
Eg - The mission editor might be able to calculate the difficulty of our mission is 'high' because we have high number of mobs, a vilain boss who has alot of powers, ambushes, and maybe the villain group on the map are a higher difficulty modifyer than other groups. Eg Maybe Arachnos are classed as harder foes than Freakshows. So they get a Modifyer of 1.8 instead of 1.4 and then it gets used in some mathematical sum to work out a difficulty number. Maybe the number could then be put into bands to determine the reward for completion of the mission.
Once again - exploitation might be possible.
So basically - Do you know if any of this stuff has been mentioned,
or
Do you think any of it will wrangle its way into issue 14? -
You have to admit, the ability to look at powers that you do not possess, yet, or never will, can be invaluable.
Even if it is just out of curiosity.
We can currently do this, by typing the power name into chat.
However, you have to admit, typing it into chat, and then having to send it in a chat message is abit round the garden in terms of directness. Surely it would be easier, to have some sort of menu, or maybe an ingame glossery that allows you to just read about that power via clicking on its name. Im sure im not the only one who has spent about 2 minutes trying to remember the correct name of a power, or maybe getting it wrong, or confused with a similar power. So typing it is not always an easy option. Im not saying get rid of the current system of dragging powers onto chat, or typing them in, because that is good for sharing information with other players. Anyhow... I doubt this would get done.
It was more a quality of life sorta suggestion, you know, "Why have to type the name of a power in, when you could have them listed somewhere, and just click on them." -
Just like the in-game advertising... never saw any of that appear.... at least.... I dont think I have seen any of it.
One thing I wouldnt mind to be more informative in City of Heroes is the [Power Name] feature.
At the minute, you can see the power details, and stats by typing in [Confuse] (just as an example) and then you click on it's name.
Would it not make more sense to provide all of the powers accessible from one menu? Means there is never a case of 'cant remember that power name' syndrome. Plus, you dont get players spamming you with power names. (Although, this suggestion is completely off topic.. so it will stop there). -
No Probs Carnifax, at least your respectful and constructive with your criticism.
I dont see any reason why we should not consider other uses for exported builds though.
Can you think of any other uses that could make a build export feature more useful?
(Might be interesting if you could right click on a character in game, and see his power choices from levels 1 -50)
Purely for informative reason of course. -
No, your not getting sarcastic, your just getting plain rude.
As for the 'its not an extension' bit.
What I mean, if you can wrap your mind around it, is that the developers put the 'power stats' tabs in, so we could plan our characters before we commit to any permanent choices, and before you retort with more 'Sarcasm', yes I know nothing in City of X is permanent, since we have those lovely little things called Respecs. It IS an extension of this system if you think of it in terms of an additional aid to help people PLAN their characters before they make the choices. There is no need to try and get technical with me about how it would be a totally different system requiring additional programming, being a programmer and all.
I did not realise this was the 'insult', 'retort' forum, coulda sworn it was the suggestion forum.
[ QUOTE ]
Point is. You had a suggestion, and because some people didn't like part of it, you've gone off and created an even more elaborate, bloated suggestion based on a desire to remove the need to alt-tab away from the screen for a few seconds once in a blue moon.
[/ QUOTE ]
OMG - I did not realise amending ideas was so wrong. This is the suggestion forum in case you didnt know. Calling peoples ideas bloated, and trying to reduce the idea down to the mere 'desire to eliminate alt-tab' is just stupid, as it does not benefit anyone. Using your logic, we could just assume that the developers added the power stats to the game, as the 'mere desire to eliminate the need to surf to city of statistics or arguably Paragonwiki.com too often' - You know that lovely little site that has almost every power in the game, along with their statistics. -
Or... heres an amendment to the idea.
The bit that seems to hack everyone off so far, seems to be the idea of the game automatically leveling you up according to your predefined build.
Well... how about, instead of that, a built in screen accessible from the level up screen, or maybe even just accessible from the main menu.
This screen can allow you to see, in game, the choice required to adhere to the build you have programmed in.
So, it wont be forcing you to adhere to that build, but it does show you the choices, and means you never have to alt - tab out of game. It would just be an extension of what the devs have already done so far, they gave us the ability to see abilities 'real' numbers on the training screen, which helps us choose.
It would be useful if we had an in game character planner, or even a method of looking backwards and forwards through levels, to see what powers we would have, and when.
For alot of people, getting powers at the right times in their career is important. Especially for PVP. Some people want that all important Stamina power before level 30 to take it into Sirens, Some might want it before 25 to take it into Bloody Bay.
It would be nice if we had a screen like this, that would resemble the respec screen, however, it has a slider, that allows us to select the level to simulate us at.
Then it allows us to choose our powers, and slots.
Since this is just a simulation, even allowing us to 'fake' slot IO's to see the benefits would be useful. -
I hate it when I launch a really powerful attack, and Im level 50, and launching it at a level 10 or something....
and it still misses.. Lol
Any chance we can make it so that our powers always hit if we are like 40 levels above the mobs?
I mean.... obviously another attack would kill them in one hit... it is just kinda embarrassing. -
Or wana get things right first time round?
-
Yeah, that has to go.
They finally got a nicer hover animation, could we please at least have a nicer teleport emote.
Also - if we are being left with teleport being a flash of light... can we at least have a 'nice flash of light.' Lol.
The flash of light is fairly generic, which is probably what they were aiming for. From a roleplaying point of view, maybe my characters teleport doesnt want to work like your characters teleport. Teleport is one of those powers that everyone looks the same in. Jumping players can have rocket boots to make them look different, flying players have wings, runners... well.... runners just run. Some sort of diversity with teleporting would be nice, even if it is a small change that gives one character distinction from the next.
