  1. Agreed. Check that thread on memory leaks and turn off unneeded background programs. 2GB should generally be plenty to run the game. More won't hurt but shouldn't be required.
  2. The Clockwork Prince was saddened and dejected to learn that Serge didn't have any of the shiny new Ultra Mode reflective pieces in his size.

Video Card. I have a huge problem with manufactures who market a card as a GTS 250 when they clock the GPU 9% slower and the memory 20% slower than the GTS 250 standard (GPU 675MHz Vs 738MHz, Memory 1800MHz Vs 2200MHz), which happens to be the same GPU speed as the 9800GTX and the same memory speed as the 9800GT. I consider the practice fairly dishonest. That said it's still the fastest nVidia card at that price at NewEgg. Probably twice as fast as the GT 240 I was suggesting in my previous post but only $30 more.

And that's the rub, there is a 20 card pileup at the low end of the price curve with huge differences in performance over a very narrow price range. Your original video card choice, the 9400GT was only $57. The underclocked GTS 250 pre-rebate is a tad over twice the price but is easily 5 times faster.
I looked at that Motherboard and settled on the one I chose as I felt as it ended up the same price with more features, it was a better choice. But I suppose either would be fine.

Your case is an ATX model so it should be able to handle most any board you might want to stick in it.

For a suggestion, I might throw this one out there: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128419 It's a bit more than your selection but after rebates comes in at the $80 mark X talked about. It's made by Gigabyte and they make good stuff. It also includes USB 3.0 and SATA3 for the future.

While it probably doesn't matter much for the immediate build, I'd change the power supply. That uit has 4 12V rails. It's generally better to get one with just one strong 12V rail than multiple weak ones. It will make life easier particularly later when you consider further upgrades down the road. Otherwise it doesn't look too bad given your requirements.

Hyper-threading is an Intel-proprietary technology used to improve parallelization of computations (doing multiple tasks at once) performed on PC microprocessors. For each processor core that is physically present, the operating system addresses two virtual processors, and shares the workload between them when possible. Hyper-threading requires not only that the operating system support multiple processors, but also that it be specifically optimised for HTT, and Intel recommends disabling HTT when using operating systems that have not been so optimized.
    From here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyper-threading

The fact you had to turn it off to make things better is kinda odd in my opinion. Let us know if you want more help.
  7. Ok, so playing your Kineticist crashes the game. Is it just logging it in and running about or a certain power or what? Basically, is there any common thread to what you're doing with it when you crash? Can you team with a Kin while on another toon or does that crash you too? Do you have another kinetics toon you can try or have you perhaps tried creating a new one just to test? Have you tried running the game in safe mode? Safe mode is accessed by checking the safe mode box which appears in the updater when you get to the TOS screen. Check the box before clicking Accept. It will force your graphics down to minimal but if your Kin still crashes you then that would tend to suggest graphics are not the issue. Also, you might see about getting an update for your sound drivers as well.

  9. Ok if I could just get everyone to line up for the picture. I need all the Nictus, Nictii? to move to the front so I can see you as well as the shorter Winter Horde. Eochai? Can I get you to stand up straight so I can see you back there? Maybe shift a bit to your right too please. And can we lose the Shadow Fall? It's interfering with the camera focus...

  10. Ok, the 3GB of system memory thing is due to a limitation of your OS. 32-bit OS's can ony address 4GB of memory. The reason it only reports abut 3GB is because that '4th' GB of address space is being used up by your hardware. So even though you have 4GB worth of memory sticks, the system can only use 3GB worth of them.

I have a decidely better system and I've seen the draw distance issue myself with the advanced shadows. It just seems to be something baked into the shadow system that the nifty shadow maps only render at a certain distance. Why, I've no idea. This was mentioned in the Beta by folks and I can't recall the Devs ever commenting on it. So either they can't increase the draw distance for them or they aren't doing so for some unstated reason.

Any choppiness you see is likely more an artifact of your card not being entirely up to the settings you have the game at. If you still consider it playable then just keep going.

As for memory I expect CoH can subsist on less (with reduced performance) but it likes to have that GB when it can and thus runs better. Excess memory needs would just be paged out on systems with lesser memory amounts.

As for your system I will note you're behind on patches being only at SP2. I'd suggest doing something about that. An audio driver update wouldn't hurt and I see that your C: drive is exceedingly low on space. That can hamper system performance. I'd recommend freeing up some space. I believe Windows doesn't like it much when free space gets below 20%. Otherwise things don't look too bad.
  11. Been like that since Beta actually but yeah, they need to fix it. Similar sort of thing I've seen on the sloped sewer sections too.
  12. Definitely let us know. It might prove useful for other folks. Also, I've seen the Television urging folks with problems to go try the Test Server. I gather there's a patch there that may fix some of these type issues. You might try that with everything on and see what you get. If it works, then a fix is on the way, if not, then I'm sure they'd like to know so they can work on it more.

Well my travels have hardly been exhaustive, but, barring actual rubberbanding lag spikes, I have yet to find a place where my play is anything less than perfectly smooth. I haven't had time and opportunity to do a raid yet, but that's about the only circumstance I can imagine right now that would make me stutter in the least.
  14. Have you cleaned the dust out of your case lately? Might wanna do that and make sure all fans are working properly. Could be a heat issue. I don't suppose at any point you have used or are using the 196.75 drivers? There's a known issue with them causing the GPU fan to not work properly and overheat the card. You can also run GPU-Z to monitor the card's performance.

    -----------|------|------|---------
    GPixel/sec | 17.7 | 33.6 | +90%
    GTexel/sec | 50.6 | 42.0 | -17%
    GFLOP/sec | 1011 | 1345 | +33%

For ~$500, immature drivers, and more heat and noise, the above did not seem to be a good deal, and unfortunately you've helped confirm that. What resolution are you running at? My first-level reaction is that the increased pixel pushing power and slightly increased overall processing power should help folks with high-res monitors in general, but that for Ultra Mode the reduced texture performance would eat into that.

Fermi, as we have it now, is a pale reflection of what it was supposed to be; the best available configuration in reality is the crippled-clock, disabled-shaders version that should have been the discount bottom if things had worked as designed. It remains to be seen whether that can eventually be fixed or not.

Note that going ATI isn't an easy fix, either; to get one that is at least equivalent on all the above stats requires going with at least a 5850 (~$300 - $390 just to about stay the same), and it looks like you'd need to go up to a 5870 (~$400 - $520) to see noticeable improvement across the board.

Considering that I paid $220 for my GTX 275, the price/performance of the current crop of cards is terrible.
Well speaking as the owner of a 5850, I'll say that the game runs beautifully for me. The only hiccup I have is the FSAA/AO conflict and I'm confident that it will be resolved in due time. So I have no hesitancy in recommending a 5850 to anyone in the market for such a card.
  16. If you haven't already try refreshing the drivers but make sure the current driver files are cleaned out first. Uninstall them, then boot to safe mode and run Driver Sweeper to get all the leftover bits. Then boot normally and install the latest driver set. That should make sure there's no older driver files mucking up the works. If that doesn't fix it then you may have a deeper issue as a 280 shouldn't have much problem with UM and as you've not had a problem till now.
  17. Sailboat, your video and sound drivers are rather out of date. I'd suggest updating them. Also, it looks like you are on wireless. There have been reports of folks on wireless connections having various issues. That might be a contributing factor. Using a wired connection if possible might help.

Soul of Fuji, you also need to update your drivers. You can find Intel drivers here: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Deta...=2576&lang=eng They look to be the most recent I can find for you. If they won't install you may need to follow the instructions found here: http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/sb/CS-022355.htm You can also try the -useTexEnvCombine switch and see if that helps.

    1. Right click on your CoH shortcut
    2. Click on Properties
    3. Click on Shortcut tab at top
    4. Go to Target window which should show: "C:\Program Files (x86)\City of Heroes\CohUpdater.exe"
    5. After the last " press space once
    6. Enter the following code exactly: -useTexEnvCombine
    7. Click on Compatibility tab and make sure the Run as Administrator checkbox is selected
    8. Click Apply and then Ok

French Kiss, My first suggestion as always is to update your drivers. I'd also recommend a memeory upgrade if you can swing it. 1GB is workable but more will help your performance. Beyond that, since you seem to be having input lag, I'd suggest disabling the ATI Hotkey Poller service. That might fix your chat issue.

elvnsword09, boy am I sounding like a broken record. Update your drivers. You're also behind on your Windows patching as you're only on SP2. Go get SP3 and get up to date. I'll also note that your hard drive is rather low on free space. I'd suggest freeing up some space. As your free space declines, so will your Windows performance which will affect CoH as well. Probably wouldn't hurt to defragment the drive after you delete or offload some files. Try all that and see if it doesn't help.
  18. As above, check for dust buildup. You'd also be well served by making sure your fans are running properly too. After that, you could also try getting one of those laptop coolong pads to help keep the temps down.

And while it almost certainly has nothing to do with your heat issue, I will note that your video drivers are fairly out of date. You can get the latest ones here: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownloa...-Bit%20Edition

I'll stop you right there. *NO* OS is invulnerable. Windows gets all the press and attention from virus writers because it is the OS most deployed across the planet. The virus writing folks are just following the numbers. Should Macs or Linux ever gain a much greater install base such that it becomes worthwhile to write serious amounts of spyware, viruses and the like to attack them, you can bet your last dollar it will happen and in big numbers. So the 'security' inherent in Macs and Linux stems more from the fact that 99% of what's out there targets Windows rather than any actual lack of potential vulnerability on their part.
  20. Well you could try contacting Support. They might have a fix. You may not be the only one out there with this issue and it's certainly a bug that should be looked into.

So they update the graphics possibilities, and now I cant use the game anymore without shelling out more for a better gfx card?
Sounds like the input lag issue some have complained of. One possible fix is to disable the ATI Hotkey Poller service. That might fix you.
  22. Hm. Yes. That does pose a problem. Ok, have you tried running the game in safe mode? That should force everything to minimum graphics and maybe will reset the opacity slider too. Not certain about that bit but, maybe?

Or, peering at the screenshot, there is that 'Set to Defaults' button there that might do something helpful.
  23. Hm. Have you tried fiddling with the color and transparency settings of your UI? Maybe it's just the screenshot but they look very transparent (or at least the bits that do show up). Perhaps a bit of twiddling there would make things show up properly. A bit of a left field idea but it just occurred to me.

To enable safe mode, in the updater when you get to the TOS screen but before clicking Accept, select the Safe Mode check box. This will force the game to run at minimum graphics.

  25. If others are seeing it, it's probably a game/server issue and nothing you can do will fix it. You can file /bug reports to help them track it and if I read it right that a toon is affected, Support may be able to help fix that specific issue. AE characters and any mobs or whatever with the issue will probably have to be fixed by the Devs.
