Quote:I think it might just be cheese rule or cottage rule, but basically it's like the standard code rant with powers, but instead of saying how hard it would be to do on a technical level, it's about how difficult it would be to change a power set without facing backlash not just from the players but themselves and their own previous coding as well.I /sign your idea and all but...
What is the cottage cheese rule?
tl;dr: it means the devs loathe changing powers sets and avoid it like a plague that killed you with bears. This rule was implemented once Jack Emmert left, as you might imagine.
@FleetWhisper, I had actually forgotten about that, but I'm not exactly sure it counts. I mean it would be like saying Masterminds have dual uzis because their pets get it, or that stalkers, brutes, etc. get Widow powers because they can summon them. -
Quote:It's one of countless NPC exclusive powers (others include things like the Tsoo's Dark and Thunder Sword hacks, Chill of the Night, Mask of Vitiation, Missile Swarm, etc. etc.) which, while it would be cool to have, are not, and probably NEVER will be available to PCs, partly due to the Cottage Cheese rule.I went to Paragon Wiki and read up on the Legacy Chain, and what stood out in my mind was the powers of Inferno Of Flame
Fire Blast, Fire Ball, Fire Breath, Fire Sword. . . common powers, yes, but wait, there was one more, Fire Sword Slice!!!!!
Fire Sword Slice Lowers your opponents defense!
I want
Was this power ever in game for us players ? I have never taken it, but is this what we call Melt Armour?
Anyways. ..not real sure why I posted this except I thought it interesting and am now curious about Fire Sword Slice.
One Idea I had for circumventing that would be the idea of "Alt Powers" in power sets which would basically be alternative powers you can choose from a set which would lock out one option or the other. For example: let's say at level 32, you had either a choice between Golden Dragon Fly, or (A katana version of Claws') Shockwave. By picking out shockwave, at 35 you would not be able to select Golden Dragon Fly, or at any other level without respeccing out of it. (Like some of the Soldiers of Arachnos' powers between the branching jobs) -
Quote:Sounds interesting, I just kind of worry that if it's selected and set, people will complain, if you can switch it out and in, it'll be, well... It just wouldn't feel quite right. What if this becomes part of character creation/customization? So, you choose one of the pre-selected special location and whenever in range you get your buff. So, let's say I roll a mutant with the ability to tap into other bodies, that used his ability to trap people and bring their bodies to Vazhilok. It's only natural to select sewers as a place of power. Now, for my natural ninja character I select warehouses(?), but for my Kheldian I go with Rikti zones. More choices are always good in my book.
Also, how about choosing enemy factions instead?? Like, my ninja, descendant of an ancient japanese ninja clan, bearing a grudge against tsoo for centuries, chooses Tsoo as his nemesis(?) group. So, basically every time I fight tsoo, I get higher SO drap rates or perhaps damage/resist/def buffs??
But on the note of your Tsoo-Hating ninja, I should point out that the Tsoo have only been around for maybe a decade or less, so the idea that his clans would bear a grudge against them for centuries would more fall into the fact that they're Hmong, wouldn't it?
(Technically and concept wise, it does make sense in another context.) -
Quote:Yeah, Sammy, this pretty much sums the biggest problem with the idea.Wait, what? Why would mutants get a bonus for being in the sewers? Why would anyone get a bonus for being in the sewers? Are you saying that, say, Magneto would feel inspired by the sewer stench?
Later on, I see a mention of warehouses and Natural heroes, and I have to ask - why? The clause in the Natural origin that states "Or maybe you're not human at all!" makes me question this. Wouldn't my completely natural space alien (read: Kheldian) not feel more at home in a Rikti base than in an abandoned warehouse?
And what about ambiguous locations, like the sea shore? That's not magical, it's not technological... It's just the beach. Or your average Mayhem/Safeguard. It's just an area of the city that has buildings in it. Would Natural Heroes get a bonus from Paragon Pizza while mutants more from El Super Mexicano? Would female characters get more of a bonus from the super ladies' bowling centre?
This comes up every time someone tries to make origins mean something - I can never agree with them on what they should actually mean. Our origins are FAR too broad to try and pigeonhole, as far as I'm concerned. This is in the same vein of making Magic characters activate their powers with spell chanting or forcing Natural characters to forego travel powers. It's not a bad idea in theory, but I question the practice of it. Specifically the practice in such a way that doesn't make me go "Wait, that doesn't make sense!" for a lot of my characters.
Just names and flavour text I can deal with, but an actual in-game advantage is more than I'm willing to concede to origins.
Closest way to circumvent it is figuring that various places would actually give a bonus to two or more origins.
Like Rikti base would boon Mutant, Science, and Natural, labs boost Science and Tech, etc. etc. and leave various neutral zones of course. -
-
Whoa whoa whoa, did I actually make a "How to make origins matter" suggestion that people liked?
Anyway though, on the note of proper SO/DO enhancements for Places of Power, that's kind of a Day Job power isn't it, but otherwise it could work.
And the reason why enhancement stores wouldn't work is that this is supposed to be an active buff while you play and not something you log out to gain charges on. -
Quote:I had actually been thinking of an MA TF based around this, where Lord of the Frosts froze himself and fellow members of the Imperial Wind to bind their time and they actually have been active and awake for some time now (awoken by the Rikti invasion) and with Reichsman free, they basically want to ally with the 5th Column and perform a Coup on the Japanese government to start a redux of World War II, or at a rerun of something like the Meiji Revolution.Ever since the first Winter event, I've been holding out hope for something, anything about the Lord of Frosts.
He only appears in the backstory on the site, and while I know he's probably dead by now, I was hoping for some closure on the "mysteriously disappeared" plot development. One of his artefacts, or something. An unknown heir. Yet more time-travel shenanigans. -
So here's the run down, Places of Power work sort of like Day Jobs, only they're active as you place, meaning they're large areas of effect that would give small damage bonuses based on your origin, but no penalties. (Maybe a bonus NEVER greater than 10%) And of course, enemies would not benefit from them.
These could either be applied to areas on a mission, areas in a zone, or both. For example, Oranbega cave missions would offer a damage bonus to magical characters.
Now as for why? Just throwing an idea out there to try to make origins matter without them becoming a major deciding factor, plus it seemed to make a little sense that maybe a tech origin character would feel more inspired in or near a lab, or a magical origin character could take the powerful magicks within oranbega and use it for their own ends too.
In the end, this isn't really a pressing idea, just something to throw out there and let people chew on in their heads. Problems also come up when you try to figure out where other origins would gain boons from, since magic and tech are the only ones with truly defined aesthetics, unless sewers would somehow be a haven for mutants and science origin and stuff, which could probably be loaded with unfortunate implications. -
Storm summoning could also have...
-Storm Control (especially for doms)
-Storm Armor (a little trickier)
-Storm manipulation. (It'll be really cool if you'd also be able to set up something like Bioshock Cyclone Traps)
Traps and Devices could also make for...
-Tactical Control
-Tech Armor (kind of stretching it here)
Assault Rifle could be...
-Shotgun
-(heavy) Machine gun
-Rifle
-Explosive demolitions
I'd bring up a flamethrower set, but fiery blast kind of covers that
Katana and broadsword would be style variations like...
-Fencing (broadsword, less damage, but faster and inherently more accurate)
-Iaido/Iaijutsu (Katana, rather than always having your sword out you keep it in its scabbard and perform lightning fast cuts (slow recharge however) with deceptively long range for massive damage)
-Zweihander (Broadsword, not exactly named for a style, but basically two handed version of broadsword that's slower but deals even MORE damage)
-Sword Beam/Sword blast (Both, see many many anime sword attacks) -
A plant dominator who speaks only in caps named: Hammy Dom.

Tsoo NPC: Terrible Wind
I want to make a Nemesis arc where you fight an "automaton" of him and when you beat him it summons and ambush of soldiers who will say: "[Character] has broken Terrible Wind!" -

With incarnates announced as a future update, I wanted to lay this thread down here to pass some of the time with the question...
Who would your toons be incarnates of?
For the sake of fun, you will not be restricted to the Greco/Roman Pantheon, you can even give example what they'd be within that Pantheon and what they'd be outside of it.
And just to add to the fun, let's also consider who canon characters, besides States. Lord Recluse, and Stheno, would be.
Starting with my own...
Takezo "Akuma Ryu" Himura-
Greco/Roman: Ares
Other: Fenris
Sakura "Tenshi" Sakuraba-
Greco/Roman: Nike
Other: Coyote
Kaede "Tenshi Ryu"-
Greco/Roman: Hera
Other: Izanami
And my guesses for canon characters...
Positron-
Greco/roman: Hephaestus (duh)
Synapse-
Greco/Roman: Hermes
War Witch-
Greco/Roman: Nike or Athena
Back Alley Brawler-
Whatever he wants to be. -
Quote:Hehe, well, actually I had wrote up the skeletal frame for a sniper rifle set a while back with the point of it being that what it lacks in AoE, it would have plenty of knock down (and a whole from a cyro round), fast animations and recharge, high damage, and most of all, long range. This one wishes to see Sniper Rifle powerset.
This one feels that simply having a sniper rifle as a costumizable weapon does nothing towards the want to create a sniper.
This one simply wants a set designed on picking off enemies one by one at a distance with the need of having to butcher an existing powerset just to get a weaker result.
This one does not know why this one is refering to this one's self as this one. This one may just be tired right now.
Regardless, this one always wanted a sniper set but has been disapointed in not having one. -
Now normally, I'd argue, but really, if you just lowered the level requirement for Ouroboros then opened up the older version of the content that way, then, bada-bing, you don't even need to worry about it being lost forever.

Quote:And why can't we get both spears and staffs? If they call it a spear power, then people will want to throw it - just call it a staff power
Also, I think it would be more polearms than spears, which would include Dao spears, halberds, etc. etc. the bladed kind unsuited for throwing, and dammit, GG, why do we have to argue in every thread we come face to face in? Am I supposed to be your cheap, 90's-riffic anti-hero arch-nemesis. (By the way, if that's the case, than maybe we should, I dunno, pool our efforts together to stop the not-so-anti-villain who's gonna bomb that orphanage?)
@Bittplayer
But I hear there's good hope for Bee Summoning. -
Quote:Actually, I can tell you as a martial artist that you can do all kinds of moves with a spear without needing to take the risk of throwing it.I think we'll get a staff set - but maybe not a spear, as it'd be hard to have you throw it, and then get it back.
Being the nerd I am, I went into my backyard with a staff with tape on the end (to mark the "spear head") and practiced a bunch of moves that could be used. if I wasn't so shy, had a camera, and didn't look like an idiot, I'd probably send it as a youtube link to the devs to help with with ideas. -

Exactly as the topic says, we talk about things we probably will never get as a powerset and why, to start off with-
Demolitions Blast: all powersets require at least a certain number of Single Target attacks, you try to tell me how a grenade or any form of explosive can be a single target power.
Sword Blast: They Devs probably know enough about how well that went over in BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger to not risk the endless RAGE in game.
ninjutsu blast/manipulation/control: It'll never happen just because BELIEVE IT!
Aquaman-... Something: Well, it depends on the incarnation, if done right it could be truly OUTRAGEOUS! -
Quote:We can just take it to Talos where Lusca doesn't spawn, we might not get as many tea ships, but we'll avoid Lusca. My dear Doctor Paradox, I had not thought of that! Those crafty devs consider everything!
Hmm. I shall retire to my thinking place, and come back with a new idea to force their hand at dismantling this racist prejudice!
besides, the calamari only spawns way out in the middle of the bay, we'd be safe even if we did do IP. -
But what about my Fatal Frame toon? (Fights only ghost type enemies in MA.
I'm not serious on this, and I actually do agree with you. -
There was an idea like this a while back, and I give full support both then and now, but I would like to add that one needs to remember how crazy fandom can be.
So I say villains too can get swarms of twisted and crazed adoring fans who love your character BECAUSE he or she is a villain.
On the flipside, heroes too can get ambushed by protest mobs, angry for locking up their "Beloved Captain Castillo" or harming their "bishie Nossie-kun." because some people root for villains, plus, news media/tabloids probably love to smear heroes since heroes are less likely to come kill them than villains.
As a side note: Arbiter drones don't teleport people off to prison, they just vaporizes them.
As a side note: a new walk emote should come with this, like a fly emote but for the walk power, and it would basically involve your character strutting as the angry mobs descend so that your PC, without words, may say "Haters gonna hate" -
Allocate half of the infinite resources to the Dev Team and put War Witch back in charge as lead developer of City of... And then I'd help with starting City of Heroes 2.
