Hey Freedom Folks!
I started out on Freedom back in 2004 and have held out a few characters in the hopes I'd be able to get them transferred to the server I finally settled into but as the game ages, that seems less and less likely. I decided to do a little housecleaning and have let go of the following lowbies:
Silver Saber
War Raven
Doctor Necrotic
Nothing grand but hopefully someone can have some fun with them. Good luck! -
I have a few silly questions that may require you to make up something semi-official on the spot. However, there is such a wealth of material between the comics, mission dialogue, novels, and official background that maybe these have actual answers that Ive missed:
Before the Rikti invasion, did Paragon City boast of any professional sport teams? If so, what were the sports, mascots, and colors? Does the University have any teams? Again, if so, what is/are the mascot and colors?
Im guessing with the influx of heroes and superpowered arena bouts presumably open to the public, any professional sporting teams may have moved on to greener pastures. It kind of makes sense that there wouldn't be any now.
Im curious about this specifically for a characters background. I can certainly make it up but if there is anything even semi-official, Id love to hear about it. -
Actually, I'm wanting a spear but would appease myself with something along the lines of a pike as long as the animations are not laughably bad and the set is fun to play. This is all operating under the assumption that none of the developers have a burning desire to do a spear set the way it should be done.
But maybe Im being overly pessimistic. A lot of the MMOs that operate with purchasable point models seem to generate a ton of niceties for their players, be it special powers and abilities, costumes, emotes, and what have you. Without the need to package all content for issue releases, there is financial incentive to get the product online as soon as it is available and working properly. I cant speak for other VIP players but Id still buy and spend points for the occasional powersets, especially if said powers are outside the realm of what is thought to be more traditionally of the superhero genre. -
Quote:I’m not really trying to be disagreeable as what you are saying sounds correct and reasonable but the brief research that I was able to engage during my lunch also seems to indicate that the culture, time frame, and the size and style of the weapon has a lot to do with the way the spear was handled. I have to also say that a spear set is kind of a personalized “want” for me as I don’t really see spear-wielding superheroes being a staple of the genre. I’m not saying that there aren’t any but there are probably tons of powersets that should be explored first for a superhero MMO. So if they tossed something in the TW mix that was kind of polearm-sized with a spearhead and it didn’t look completely silly in use, I could roll with it.While I would love a spear set, I would be really disappointed if it was two handed. Spears were predominantly one handed weapons, used with a shield. Ideally, the spear would be used in an ancient Greek style overhand manner, but even an underarm fashion would be good as long as it's not two handed
Of course, a real thrusting, jabbing single-handed spear powerset would be the ideal and I would love to see one. With the precedent being set for some limited range attacks in claws, spines, and KM (I think), you might even be able to toss it! My mouth waters at the idea of one of my mains finally having the spear she was always meant to have. If she ever gets it, I may never leave this game. -
When it comes to two-handed weapons, Id love to see a spear set. Ive never really studied spear usage but I have to think there would be a lot of jabs and stabs with the spearhead and that seems at odds with the Titan Weapons (dont much care for that name) description and I dont think it would work as an alternative for a theoretical quarterstaff set unless there were specific animation differences (or choices) depending on the weapon. Having said that, the TW set might be my best chance to see a spear in the hands of my characters before senility sets in so something semi-spear-like would be cool. I can RP the rest.
With regard to mammoth impromptu weapons in the hands of presumably super strong characters (the railroad crossing sign, other street signs, railroad ties, steel beams, motorcycles, random citizens, the fiberglass Statesman standee from an Up & Away Burger advertisement) it might be cool to have some kind of also have some kind of randomizing feature that cycles the weapons of this ilk out every 10 minutes or so on redraw just to give the flavor of the character grabbing whatever is at hand. Of course, you could do costume swaps to achieve this effect but a randomizer would be much cooler.
I'm stealth posting and reading from work so apologies if any of this is well tread territory. -
Im pretty happy with this list even if I dont have a half dozen character ideas that are now made possible by these combinations. That said, Ive had a controller concept in my mind for awhile that I think I could make work with a Poison secondary. I would just hope that the set gets some alternate animations too the spit animations (cant remember how many there are) just dont work well for the idea I have in mind. Still, I could roll with it for awhile.
If I do a post about Alternate Animations, do you think well get another Intrepid Informer on that subject in the next 24 hours too? -
Relevent to my interests:
Intrepid Informer: Powerset Proliferation 3.0
But when?? I'm reading on the sly from work and could only skim. I didn't see the when!
EDIT: Bah! Too slow! -

Quote:Yes, Im aware. Thus, the kindly request from me above. The feature list for i21 has already been announced. Proliferation isn't on it.
Exactamundo. -
With a new tutorial and a (presumably) new VIP server on the horizon, playing fresh new characters on this shiny new server could breathe a little bit of life into the early game. It’s getting a little hard to find a team outside of Incarnate Trials and weekly Strike Targets already. With only one new powerset in I21, a little proliferation could go a long way towards giving folks a reason to make new Level 1s rather than just focusing on how to move their existing Incarnates over as quickly as possible.
One personal note: I just had a fight last night with Maelstrom in one of the tip missions so if you could only proliferate one powerset for I21, please, please, please give us a version of Martial Arts as a blaster secondary. Please. It totally works. You’ve got your stun, you’ve got your build up, you’ve got your knockback “get away from me” power, you got your AOE knockdown. With some minor adjustments, it would work wonderfully as blaster secondary and would provide us with a much needed “natural” option for those primary powersets that don’t have a thematic match. I have a number of blasters using energy now that would instantly get a re-roll with MA if it were available. What better time to do that than with the release of a new issue with a new tutorial? -
Quote:Yeah, I was kind of shocked to see a new deviation from MMO Art. I'm kind of curious myself. I've always liked a lot of the work but just saw the name on too many rip lists to bother making contact. Personally, I can live with someone who takes their time but I don't like it when the communication stops and that was exactly what I'd heard happened to a few people with this artist.Zombie rules and other stuff aside for the moment I'm surprised no one is mentioning the fact that this is an MMO Art.
Thought he was on the do not commission list for stealing hundreds of dollars of peoples money and disappearing without delivering anything in return.
Has there been new info or developments you might share with the other collectors here (or was it never a problem for you getting what you paid for out of him)?

Quote:Yep, that was it. And I could have sworn I had put you on Watch but you weren't. I fixed that.

Quote:It would be a money making venture for the cosplayer but I think most of my character costumes are broad enough with regard to patterns and emblems and pieces to avoid being classified strictly as a CoH character. The costume creator is just a handy tool for making the costumes since I cant draw a lick.1) I'm not a lawyer so everything below this is just me talking out of my butt / giving my rather uninformed opinion.
2) I think a whole heck of a lot would depend on if this was a money making venture or not. If nobody is trying to turn a profit then probably no harm no foul.
3) a lot would also likely depend on just how closely the cosplay outfit resembles specific and unique costume pieces. If it's all just inspired by but not really much resembling unique costume pieces then I think you'd be safe. However if you were trying to exactly mimic the Arachnos Soldier outfit then I'd see a lot more possibility if CoH and associates caring...
As for whether I'd considered this or not, no I did not. Thought never occured to me. I think the stars would have to align just right for me to do so - the perfect looking cosplayer (in regards to how I envision my character) and the right cost, etc etc...
It's definitely an interesting idea though and I would be very curious in the results. Both how the pictures turned out and if you liked the results as much as you thought you would...
I broached the subject with the cosplayer in question but I dont even know if shes interested yet as she hasnt responded. I know that I could get someone to do it but it probably would be one of my more expensive commissions ever. Still, I love the idea of seeing one of the characters come to life and I definitely want to make it happen.
Incidentally, I already am kind of doing a cosplayer commission already a female friend of mine wants to get a costume for Rogue together for the SDCC and I agreed to help defray some of the cost just in the interest of ensuring that she gets some good work done. Im looking forward to seeing how that one turns out.
Quote:I tend to think I can get closer to the perfect shot via art than model. I think I'd be more willing to look past imperfections in art and let my imagination go whereas in a photo I think my mind would be more stuck on the reality, imperfections and all... if that makes any sense.
Quote:I say, date the nearest cosplayer near you, make her/him/them dress up as YOUR ideas, and snap a lot of pictures.
Quote:NCSoft owns the rights to your character as they appear in game. NCSoft does not own the rights to your original character, as they appear outside of game.
This means that they own Massacre Melanie, the Fire Blast/Dark Miasma corruptor that resides in the Rogue Isles and has adventures burning Paragon to the ground. They do not own Massacre Melanie the corrupt magical faerie who that seethes with arson fill hatred and happens to wear a red leather jacket with combat boots.
Certain costume sets are designed around NPCs or enemy groups they use, such as Kheldians and VEATs, Vanguard, etc. But they don't own the rights to your overall design. If you make use of the very specific NPC parts, then you can get around copyright by simply changing the piece to something more generic.
So don't be afraid that NCSoft owns your soul. They don't. You still own your characters, just not their ties to the game.
Yeah, I remember that and Im sure it is still archived somewhere. Some of them were quite nice. -
Quote:By the time I get around to commissioning characters as art, they've generally already moved away from their game origins to a degree. I nearly always add details that can't be found in game and with my interest in MMOs somewhat waning at this point in my life, I imagine some characters I get commissioned going forward (because I do still enjoy that) won't be from a game at all. This is all a long way of saying that I don't think the costumes or the names would be an issue so far as violating NC Soft's purported ownership of all characters in the game.So long as you don't use the City of Heroes/ Villains trademark in any way, you should be fine, same with the lady selling the pictures of herself as your toon.
She may also want to avoid using the exact name of your character on her pictures and, if she does title them, go with something generic. I recommend this as I know costume and prop makers who can get away with offering a Captain America costume for sale by offering it as "Patriotic Hero".
Costume makers who don't generic the names of their products risk being hit with Cease and Desists by Marvel or DC. I've been a cosplayer for many years and I've seen a lot, including people getting shut down by Marvel.
Personally though, I'd love to see the finished product that you and your cosplayer create. I've been slowly working on a costume for myself of my own character for use at SDCC but it keeps getting put on the back burner hehehe.
By the way, great costumes! I've seen some of them before but I'm not sure where. dA account, maybe?
That may be an idea... But it seems that there are a few folks in the art buying game that harbor commercial plans for their characters. I'd always heard this was prohibited (unless the character can be proven to pre-date the CoH version) but I kind of have to think it would only become an issue if a character just exploded in global popularity. At best, this would be a cosplayer making a few bucks off prints of her as one of my characters that kinda sorta looks like you could make the costume in CoH. Seems like pretty small potatoes and it's hard to imagine NC Soft going ape over a few rupies being made from one of the millions of player characters. A signature character... that I could understand. -
Quote:Yeah, my characters don't have any of me in them and I really have like zero interest in dressing up in a costume myself. As most of my more art-worthy characters are female, nobody on this good green Earth wants to see me trying to work that out in drag. Trust me on this.Never really thought of that myself, but likely because I consider my characters to all have a little part of me in them. I would be overly critical of someone essentially costuming to be 'me' even if they asked and would likely just end up making them pissed off at me. That said I believe the actual cosplay wouldn't run afoul of anything with some photos, but actual studio-like photo shoots/prints might.
Quote:It would matter if the cosplayer actually looked something like my hero. Other than that I thick it would just boil down to a matter of cost.
Quote:Only thing I'd worry about is if at some point in time the girl actually copyrighting the costume and/or character herself. Then claiming you stole it. It's probably a non-issue but that's about the only one I see as being a problem. Of course that's easily overcome with documentation of your character prior to her use BUT if you're like me, you don't think of that stuff... -
One of the commissions I've really wanted to have done in my heart of hearts is to get one of my female OCs done up as a cosplay commission. Basically, have a female cosplayer make a costume and model the costume for a few shots. They keep their work when they are done and I get a few pics of an OC. I'm poorer, they're richer. We're all happy.
Does anyone else want or think about doing this? I've encountered a cosplayer who was looking to sell posters and prints but was concerned about using trademarked characters and thought that if there was a market for this, it might be a work around for her. I can't speak for anyone else but I don't really have any commercial aspirations for any character I've come up with and if some girl could make a buck selling pictures of herself as one of mine (without me somehow losing all rights), I can't see much caring about that. I've already encountered some commissions being offered as prints - I'm not sure this is that different.
Anyway, has anyone else considered a cosplayer commission? I'm about to broach the subject with the cosplayer in question and wondered if there is a market or if I'm the only one. -
Quote:I love it! And my favorite part is the implication that Airhead may be the voice of reason judging from his concerned expressed. Or maybe he's just vexed that she took the last marshmallow. Either way, it's a very unique piece of work... Thanks for having Janet in it.Gamb1ear's got so much style. Hallucenogenic. Unusual canvas shape. And the colours are serious stuff, with a pinkish nose that keeps him human. Gamb1ear's gotten much faster with his commissions now too, tho it's best to choose the option to have him do the colours too if you're impatient. Thanks G!

Quote:If you do owe me any thanks for MyAmbeon, you're getting it right back with EuROPA777. I've wanted to get some more model sheets for my characters and these just might fit the bill. Great stuff!Truthfully I don't know if I found her before your contest or not... If not, then I owe you some thanks! :P

Quote:I really love this artist - I found her myself through her awesome entries to my Vanessa Lake contest last year - but every time she's open for commissions, my funds are tapped. This one turned out beautifully and it is definitely interesting to see something from her outside the surrealism she's known for... Great commission!Another beautiful Fenian painting, this time by MyAmbeon from DeviantArt...
MyAmbeon is an artist I've been waiting and waiting to see open up for commissions and when she finally did I just had to jump on it!Sometimes the fact that you've spent too much lately just doesn't matter.
To really get the full effect you need to see this full sized... MyAmbeon didn't upload the full sized version to her page so you'll have to check out mine once I upload it :P But any faves or such should really go to her. -
Quote:Thanks VexXxy! I can totally imagine the scene where she pulls out some dainty lady-sized space derringer that prompts the bad guys a snickerin' until they see it whirl and twist and transform into the highly deadly purple and pink proton pistol we all know and love.I hate to tell you guyz this, but the ray gun is collapsible. When she needs it, she just adds a little bit of air...and WO-LAH!
Gratzzz Attache!! She turned out totally cute!! -
Quote:I mix up both. If I'm posting a lot here and flip over to dA, I use the brackets when I should use the <>. If I'm posting a lot there and come here, the reverse happens. The main thing I carry over from dA is their emoticons. I cannot tell you how many times I typed  or :highfive: or  into these forums. Fortunately, I always seem to catch it.Reversed for me heh.
I tend to get it right here and mixed up on DA.
Good thing they have a preview function cuz post's are
permanent over there (no editing after the fact but, though I
don't know how, I think there is a way to hide the comment altogether).
Of course, you can do this if you're really committed -- but who has that kind of time?

Quote:I know but I get them confused flipping back and forth from dA to here. I usually preview to make sure I didn't flub up but I was also multi-tasking here at work. I'm surprised I spell anything correctly, honestly. It's brackets [ ] not greater than/less than < > for the syntax.
