    Phantom Enigma

Sorry for the delay in my updating, but I have really great news.

Phantom's caregivers are having a meeting in the morning to discuss, among other things, how soon he's going to get to come home! We have a meeting with the case worker at 4pm to find out the information. We're all very excited!

Phantom is making amazing strides in rehab. He loves the occupational therapy (doesn't hurt that all of the OTs are really cute women, either ), as they have him do fun things like make pudding, play cards, play Wii games, etc. They're working with him to do laundry and stuff like that now, which isn't fun but will be helpful.

His spirit, sense of humor, and creativity are all in tact. We were cracking each other up today while we put together the LEGO Space Needle kit that Manoa and Somber sent him. We also took a nice long walk and had a great conversation. It's just now starting to sink in what happened to him, and the enormity of it (like that he survived at all) is now something he's aware of. He feels really fortunate to have made it (and he is!) and is very thankful for all the loving and supportive messages he's received from so many people.

Phantom's really looking forward to being home and getting back into his normal life, and fighting/causing crime with all of you again. He asked me a lot of questions today about the new things coming up and was really excited!
  3. I'm sorry Ally

I was actually happy for the change because Phantom should be home by then, and he was looking forward to 2XPW.

    Bad news

I'm so sorry to hear this LSK. I'll keep you all in my thoughts.

Phantom has had quite a week! He's been moved to the rehab unit where he gets an hour each of speech, occupational, and physical therapy. He took some unassisted steps the other day and was walking with the hand rails today. He's been very touched by all your messages of good wishes, care, and concern.

Thank you all so much for all your kind words. It means a lot to all of us!
  6. I will be in Florida this Monday, but will try to catch you after I get home.

I love that you're still doing this, and I can't stop laughing over the name this week! I can't wait to tell Phantom the name of the SatMat this week. It always makes him smile.

He was watching Tom and Jerry.

Thank you Manoa for posting that! It has indeed been a very busy week. Phantom is now out of ICU and into a regular room. He has all of his tubes and monitors off and out except for the picc line and the heart monitor. He's eating normal food, though it still needs to be pureed before they give it to him. He's still quite raw and tender in his through and esophagus from the long intubation. He was in very good spirits yesterday and laughed a lot. My sister and I are on our way now to see him again.

Thank you all so much for your continued well wishes and support!
  10. Can't make it this time. Gonna be out and about with the crankiest tank the Justice server has ever known.
  11. Are you guys serious about this Sister P art? She looks like a sex doll, and on top of that she looks completely incompetent and unprepared for battle. BAB is all ready to go, has his game face on, and she's like "Golly gee, I have no idea what to do! I'm frightened even though I'm the second most powerful psychic in the world!" Come on. Not only does she deserve better, but so do all the women who play this game. Have you forgotten how many of us there are?

How about giving her, and by extension all the women who play this game, some dignity? How about not making her look like an empty-headed sex object?

What ever happened to all the squawking about "Having female pets for Masterminds would be sexist!"? Did you forget that argument? How about all us women who WANT female minions, and DO NOT want to be depicted as vapid second-rate heroes who are barely more than sidekicks?

Great Phantom news today! Over night, he drained a LOT of CSF (cranial-spinal fluid) out of his cranium, and the swelling really went down. His ICP (inter-cranial pressure) dropped and all of his vitals continue to remain stable. His night nurse was very pleased with his results and said he made fantastic progress. His day nurse today echoed that and said the doctor was very happy this morning when he checked in on him.

Phantom's doctors and nurses have been asking him to give a thumbs up to answer their questions. Today, he gave two spontaneous thumbs up! Once was when my mom and I were telling him he's doing very well and made good progress, and the other was when I told him Brax was coming to see him in a few days. He also moved his head and feet a lot, which he hadn't been doing much of before. He squeezed our hands on command, and even reached for Mom's hand once on his own.

    Great day for progress!

All is quiet on the Phantom front tonight. He's still making slow and steady progress, and his prognosis is great. Doc said yesterday that he sees no reason why Phantom won't fully recover.

Again, thank you all so much for your outpouring of concern and well wishes. I've shared them all with my family, and they thank you as well. It means a lot to all of us that so many of you think fondly of Phantom.
  15. Welcome! A good way to get started on Justice is to join the SatMat. It's an excellent and long-running event that brings together regular forum users (and some folks who don't but are always willing to help fill out teams) and helps you get to know people.

He's a Fortunata or NW, I believe. I know he's an epic Villain AT.

Thanks for once again naming the SatMat for Phantom! I can't wait to tell him about this when he's awake and lucid again.

Put me down as a maybe. I'm not sure if I'll be home (all depends on how Phantom is that day), but if I am I'd like to team with you all. If I can make it I'll bring whatever the team needs most.

    Phantom Enigma

There's no significant news for Phantom today, other than he's responding to commands and questions by giving a thumbs up or thumbs down. He's still progressing nicely, though injuries of this sort are very slow to heal. Doctors are all pleased with what they see. He's also opening his eyes a bit to the sound of my voice, but he's still on a ventilator so he's not going to be fully awake again for a while.

Thank you all so much for your outpouring of well wishes and concern. I was stunned speechless by some of the e-mails and PMs I received. Once again Justice reminds me why it's my virtual home and why I love you all so much.

Indeed, we are all very thankful he pulled through this. We lost a cousin to this very same thing, had an uncle who survived, and lost our father to a brain tumor. We take matters of the brain quite seriously. Even the doctor tried to impress upon Phantom how lucky he is to be alive, and he gave a very Phantomesque fist pump and smiled at the doctor.

Still, he's not entirely out of the woods yet. The next hurdle is getting the brain swelling to go down and stay down. This means waiting for his body to reabsorb the blood in his cranium. This is a slow and nerve-wracking process, and that's why he's in a medically-induced coma right now.

When he was awake, we laughed and joked with him, and he remembered all of our old and obscure inside jokes from childhood. THAT was highly encouraging. He remembered song lyrics, movie quotes, and was even able to do one of his favorite things - take Broadway showtunes and change the lyrics to something vulgar. (you probably don't want to know what he did to "Greased Lightning," but it involved feces) So we are confident that his quirkiness, sense of humor, and creativity are still intact. For that we are enormously thankful!

Karo already posted what I was going to update you with, but I wanted to share some of the more amusing things from when he was awake.

Our youngest brother flew home from NJ last night (he's in the Coast Guard and they gave him emergency leave), and Phantom was quite happy to see him. At one point the nurse asked Phantom if he knew why he was there, and he pointed to our brother and said "He told me I ran head first into the TV." (Little Brother had said nothing of the sort) Phantom has no memory past Wednesday, and he's trying to fill in the gaps by making stuff up, sometimes to humorous results. When I told him it was Friday, he said "That's not possible. What did I do yesterday?" I said "You spent yesterday in a coma and had major brain surgery." He did a fist pump and said "Alright!" :-)

When we got to talk to him today he showed signs that his personality and creativity are still intact. However since the damage is in the frontal lobe, he has no social filters and he said some pretty colorful things. >.>

I want to thank you all so much for the messages you've sent. It means a lot to my family to know that Phantom is being thought of. :-)
  21. Missi you are so sweet to name the SatMat for Phantom this week. :-) I can't wait to show him all this stuff when he's ready.

Quick update from my phone - Phantom is awake, off the ventalator and talking. His short term memory is off and the situation hasn't fully set in. I'll post a better update when I am at my computer.

Thank you all for your well wishes!

    Phantom Enigma

I wanted to let everyone know that my brother, who you guys know as Phantom Enigma, had emergency surgery this morning for a ruptured aneurysm. He made it through the surgery beautifully and is now starting a long recovery. He'll be hospitalized for about two weeks. Though doctors are optimistic about a full recovery, it's going to be a long and rocky process for him. Matters of the brain are always tricky and delicate.

Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers. If you would like to pass along any well wishes, you can either PM them to him or e-mail them to me at arwen.darkbalde@gmail.com.
