Quote:That would be a tad different from what I was going forThis might work on a new game just being introduced, but I don't think they could successfully market it to an audience that has been playing the game for a while. Especially if they had to pay more for the same gaming experience that they have been getting for less. Just for arguments sake, let's say the the pay scale goes like this:
Silver - $14.99
Gold - $15.99
Platinum - $16.99
I know this is different from your example, but this way they make money on all accounts. Only problem is that the long term players have been getting full access to the game now for only $14.99 a month, BUT that same amount would now only get them limited access. Can you hear the mental screams? Especially if the server they have been playing on is no longer one of the ones they have access to for the lower prices?
I guess that silver would be a (free) but extremely limited account, gold would be what we have now (mostly) and platinum would be what we've come to expect plus no microtransactions.
They could even lower the bar for gold so that current use is deemed 'platinum'.
Free (+MTs), $9.95 (+MTs), $14.95.
If you choose to only use one server, then you're no better or worse off than now; especially being that each tier limits you to a server set (not just one server). -
Anyway... since the convo has steered to fee tactics, I would suggest 'tiered membership'
Silver - Access to only X servers; limited Y number of of character slots, MA slots and costume slots (and other limitations, some, which can be overcome through micro-transactions) - lowest cost (or free)
Gold - Increases server access, character, MA and costume slot limits; paid server transfers; limited ig-mail privileges; even split between micro-transactions and items built into free releases (regular cost)
Platinum - Full access to all servers and slots; free server transfers; full ig-mail privileges (item transfer); anything that would normally come as a micro-transaction is built into free updates
[Not a complete example but hopefully, you get the idea] -
"leaked", lol, it's a concession.

Complaining about general AE problems IS a thread-jack in a thread about a contest. There is some overlap, but honestly, what does it bring to the proceedings?
"Hey guys, let's have a contest..."
"WHY DIDN'T YOU FIX THIS BUG?!"
"...huh?"
Yeah, kind of a non-sequitur.
Your simplification takes what's going on out of context; people aren't just blurting out "Fix a bug." and leaving people confused.
I don't even think that's where most of the complaints are.
Most of the issue that I'm seeing pertains to the general handling of MA/AE events and possibly having to axe long standing creations in order to participate.
Anyway, that's besides the point... the issue is that both pros and cons are allowed to be discussed; ie. "We like the contest because..."/"We don't like the contest because...".
It's really just too bad if you wish this discussion to be one-sided.
As I said, if they wanted this just to be an Announcement (without all the pro/con discussion), then they should've treated it just like an Official Announcement and locked the thread. -
Quote:Not a thread jack in any shape, form or fashion. Being that they left it open (while most Official Announcements are locked posts) denotes that this is a discussion thread meant to discuss Dr. Aeon's announcement. Not just to nod at it and smile.Annoyed no.
However this isn't the place for it. This is an announcement for a contest, not an invitation people to gunk up the thread with complaining.
Start a thread with your issues, PM Dr. Aeon with your concerns. But its completely off topic and a thread jack. -
Quote:I agree, Paragon needs to fully utilize the communication channels that they have.*raises hand*
I have a suggestion. Add a link to the contest within the game's updater. It was something done for PvPEC's big League tournament this year that was a pleasant surprise that surely helped them gain a little attention that they wouldn't have gotten just through the forums. Furthermore, the GMOTD should be used for spreading news and events to people in-game. -
I'm not sure if I'll be doing this one but it did get me thinking about the playerbase niches and how competitions/contests, like this one, could go a long way in keeping the players interested in CoX; overall.
We have:
The Base Builders (that kind of got slighted with the slowdown/stop of the Community Digest) - CoX would do good to follow the direction of a few of the social app games and have a monthly/quarterly Base Design contest.
PvPers - More regularly scheduled Dev sponsored events (in addition to player events) once the mechanics get to where they need to be.
TF/STFers - More regularly scheduled Dev sponsored events (in addition to player events); Fastest Time Completion, Most Kills, Least Deaths, etc (tracked like Flashback Trials are)
MA Authoring - A more regular schedule for Dr. Aeon's theme-based MA authoring events as well as events to cover CoX's major holiday cycles (Xmas, Spring Fling, Halloween, New Years plus any they themselves aren't covering) ***but beyond that, MA Author/Illustrators should be able to get recognition not only for their stories but for their Custom Enemy Groups as well (design, back-story, power selection, dialogue, etc)
Fan Artists/Writers/Videographers - Periodic contests tied into a CoX backed Fan Page; listing all the top entries from these contests.
Action Screenshot/Screen Capture of the ________
Dev backed costume contests (in-game)
Bringing back the forum games (Spot the Shot, Captions, Save the World) and expanding it to FB and Twitter (at the very least through a link back to the forum article)
***The Dev/Marketing Team did well in pushing GR through these channels but they need to be consistent in pushing all PR info through these channels*** -

Karma for the Party Pack.
(even the store doesn't want you to buy it) -
Could care less how my costume looks to other people, whether they like it or not is irrelevant to my costumes resolution... I'm not here to please them or cater to their subjective take on aesthetics or to play keep up with their graphics hardware.
It has to look decent to me on the graphics setting that I am using.
If for some reason players are having to use minimum or performance settings, they're not seeing the glories of higher resolution anyway; which means some of those newer pieces made to take advantage of higher resolutions just doesn't look right to some players sometimes; while the older pieces that cater to the lower resolutions work out just fine.
Even when the low res costume works for the player using it; there is always going to be a disparity between that player and the player at the higher end of the graphics scale... has been in in the past, will be in the future. High end graphics users will still balk [at] the decisions made by the low end users while the low end users will fail to see every last bit of detail the high end user put into his costume.
This especially holds true in the tran[s]fer of a toon from the Tailor to the open game; where lighting and other factors come into play. -
Quote:It's not objective when the poll creator states his option preference in the opening statements and then defends that preference (over the other option) throughout the rest of the discussion. To quote Robin Williams in Awakenings, "I would agree with you if you were right." It was indeed an open and honest objective platform, much preferred to the "take it or leave it" attitude that seems to bring things like the Party Pack. However, the discussion clearly supported option 1 by a 2 to 1 margin. It wasn't for show. The majority supported his original intention, yet that gets ignored. We now will either not get as many retextures as we could have, or it will take a great deal longer since they will waste 50% of that time with the menu.
We will still get retextures and costume pieces (we always do); and a new menu remains to be seen... he even stated, essentially, that its not a definite thing... just something that will be looked into. -
Quote:What would be the point of him asking if his mind was already made up? I, for one, am glad that they took a 'for show' situation and turned into what it should have been in the first place; an open, honest and objective platform for player input (unlike what happened with the Party Pack). Otherwise, do what you need to do and approach the players in a "this is what we're gonna do-no questions asked" fashion. IMOSo what was even the point of asking if you're just going to go against your original idea and cave in to the minority? "How dare you meek my character look better!" I think having outdated textures sitting next to the new upgraded ones is just going to bloat the menu ridiculously.
-
Quote:Now, THAT's what I'm talking about.Hey, guys. Just wanted to thank everyone for casting a vote and for helping us get a better picture of what the playerbase is thinking. Here's my takeaway from reading the 22+ pages of thoughts on the topic: Arguments on both sides were compelling to the point where a third option, perhaps involving the menu setup, seems like the best way to satisfy all parties. This is NOT a promise of future action, but it's the view I'll express on your behalf.
So yay--everyone wins. We'll make every effort to create new pieces that give you all better options in areas that might be lacking. And don't worry, Option 2 folks--nothing will be removed from the system.
If anyone would like to comment further about specific costume pieces, please don't hesitate to post in the All Things Art thread.
Cheers,
Noble Savage
Please look into the menu setup so that it both helps to clear the current clutter and is flexible enough to handle any future changes to costume design; like Aura separation, Chest Detail vs. Chest Pattern separations, additions to sub-menu items/variants, or even the suggested costume upgrading, etc.
Heck, if possible, I would go as far as to say see if a player modifiable menu could be done (with a default/reset button of course) so players can set up the costume creator in a manner that best fits their individual needs (a walk-in closet of sorts)
Please strive to leave in (optional) low-demand graphics (when possible) for those already struggling to keep up with the fast pace of visual upgrades.
Please strive to keep adding upgrades for those who can get the most out of it.
Please keep as many options available to the players as possible (in all aspects); this is what separates CoX from most MMOs... near infinite possiblilites. -
Quote:One thing to consider is that redo-ing the menus and placement of items within them is, in itself, a significant amount of work for the Character and Tech teams. Assume that any menu work will consume 50% of the time available for any redos.
Bottom line, avoiding menu work is preferable and brings us back to Options 1 and 2.
Redoing menus and item placement needs to be done even if we weren't faced with this 'option'. -
Quote:This. Thanks, David, for seeking our input!
This goes back to my running plea: standardized 'skins'. All pieces ideally should be able to be skinned with a standard set of skins such as: matte flat, shiny flat (spandexy), leather rough, metallic shiny, metallic reflective, etc.... This should be the ultimate goal and all updates working towards it. This would be the costume creator 2.0 that CoH needs to move towards to stay competitive; otherwise, what is the jewel in the CoH crown will be dismissed as "it's no All Points Bulletin costume creator."
Quote:What if players have been taking the low-rez version and coloring it to be horn ridges or ear flaps? One of the advantages of the low-rez 'blurry' pieces were how they could be re-purposed.
This brings me back to my point about 'skins' for pieces. It would be nice if there was a 'blank' skin that had no specific hi-rez texture precisely so that it can be colored to be almost anything. -
How about adding a Legacy Tailor contact to a specific Icon/Facemaker location (or to all such locations); move all the old school pieces there for minimized menu clutter.
-
Quote:Some pieces, like the old tank top (bikini top, skin shorts, etc), should probably be moved into 'pattern' status. They already resemble body paint and I'm sure that some players would like to keep that option if the old piece fits the bill.Sure. Not saying that this is in the queue or anything, but take a look at the tank top. Currently, it's a simple cut-out without any details. Now look at a real-world tank top (like this one http://www.undershirtguy.com/wp-cont...n-tank-top.jpg) and note the trim and stitching along the edges and bottom. Also note the subtle folds and even subtler fabric texture. These are things that could be improved in an updated texture. Would it still be a plain white tank top? Of course! But it'd be a lot more realistic and convincing.

From your first few responses it seems that you've already made up your mind, but if we're serious about following the poll then I would offer this:
Show them an example or two of Option 1 (Old pieces vs. revamped pieces)
If players still opt to keep the old pieces, then I would follow one of the first suggestions made in this thread and relegate them to a sub-menu (as it stands, this should be done anyway with Chest Details and some of the other options).
Sidenote: I'm all for pushing the envelope but not for alienating players on older machines or 'forcing' them to upgrade in order to handle cosmetics. -
Quote:IMO, False.Fortunately, I think not enough people get this. "but the endurance consumption" and "but it provides me with such a small benefit" will keep the game balanced.
I'd take it a step further than what you proposed, if everyone took Maneuvers and one of Assault/Tactics (either), everything would get even more silly easy.
1) Leadership power values vary from AT to AT.
2) This is assuming that everyone runs big teams.
3) Even if everyone in the game took a Leadership Pool power:
a) Maneuvers - Defense cap and no Defense Debuff resistance - when a good chunk of enemy groups use Defense debuffing attacks; 8 Maneuvers doesn't mean much unless you're running with 8 Crabs, other defense support toons or a defensive build that doesn't need the extra 2.68% defense buff
b) Assault - Damage cap; not too hard to reach to begin with and can be accomplished with current powers/ATs without breaking the game
c) Tactics - would be the gold mine out of the set; this would come the closest to making the game easier to run through at all difficulties. Broken though, not sure.
d) Vengeance - not enough experience with it to comment
Not to say that an 8 man Crab team or /FF Mastermind team (or any large good/specialized team) won't cause murder because of the change; they will... but the thing is, they already do -
Quote:Thanks.Carrion, yes but individual tentacles have short life spans and low base damage so it won't help very much. Fly trap, yes, it's a normal pet. Tornado and Lightning storm, only if YOU are vengeance buffed while they're cast (buff carries over from you to pseudo pets).
-
Does Vengeance buff Plant Pets (Carrion and Fly Trap)? How about /Storm summons (Tornado and Lightning Storm)?

Quote:Possibly because its one of the few things that are definite (much of that list was 'if maybe' and 'at some point'), has the most basic info available (to the playerbase) about it (people that know the Fitness Pool vs. people that know the Alpha Slot of the Incarnate System); probably the biggest thing is that a Redname responded specifically to that topic... twice (throw up any thread that has a laundry list of items and a redname highlights one... that's what most everyone will tend to talk about)seconded. given everything else up for discussion the only thing worth 800 posts and 40 pages is fitness?
something seems off here....

Damn you Cole! what have you done to primal earth! -
Tighter build? Subjective to the needs/specifics of the player. Moot point to argue.
Penalty? Why would there be... Base Health and Stamina do little to boost any toon to levels that would make them broken (outside of those that have mastered the art of being Staminaless - but still not broken). I mean, look at VEATs and Conditioning.
To maximize both Health and Stamina (in builds that necessitate that); extra slots would need to be spent... creating an slot offset *for most players* (uber players that are will to and can afford to min/max with IO Uniques and Sets are the minority and are mostly irrelevant to the overall picture; (ie. so what if 10-15% of you can slot an extra LoTG: Recharge? Most won't, can't or don't need/desire to do it.))
Making powers cost more endurance, or throwing out tons of critters that use -End/-Recov would defeat the purpose of making the Fitness Pool free; especially being that only one of those four powers has anything to do with Endurance. Besides, they've already added mobs that reflect the new powersets added (including Electric Control)
Vengeance will be cool for my /Kin builds and maybe my MMs and VEATs...
[Did changing Brawl into an non-endurance damage IO mule change anything else in the game?]
