Now with even random junk enhancement drops removed, I really don't see how you can say that even an experienced player, let alone a brand new player, can make enough for to afford SOs at level 22 without stopping XP or getting into the Invention system to sell its drops.
If you want, with my next new character, I will level him up to 22 without going to the market or selling any invention salvage that I get. I will still sell smart, though, as that is a tool that new players will have. And then I can report back on how well I did, and see if I was able to fully slot the character with SOs (or I'd say 90% slot the character out is still pretty decent). If I can do that, will you still suggest that it can't be done?

If the TV trial gave unlimited respecs I wouldn't object but with only a few respecs available I think that's a bad strategy.
A brand new player is likely going to need to respec at some point anyways. Saving the respec for a level where they need to buy new enhancements anyways is just being frugal, since it makes the most for the respec. Let's say that a brand new player needs a respec, and they run the trial right at level 24. With a full team, they may be level 25 when they get out. Thus, all they really need to do is wait two levels before performing the respec.

Now, if they are a more knowledgeable free player, who will plan out their build ahead of time, then they likely won't need many respecs to get their build right anyways, so using the respec in this way will just help them afford stuff they were going to do anyways.

So really, I don't view this as them burning a respec, just making better use of it.
  3. If you all took Maneuvers and Assault, you'd be running around with about 28% Def and +84% damage all the time. If you all Assassin Striked the same target, you'd do about 4,500 damage in a burst. Mmmm...tasty.

I'd join if I played more, as this sounds like fun.

    1) The definition of hardcore gamer changes from person to person. Very few people tend to think of themselves as hardcore gamers. Most people have definitions of "casual," "average," and "hardcore" gamer that goes something like this:

A casual gamer is someone that plays less than I do.

An average gamer is someone who plays about as much as I do.

A hardcore gamer is someone that plays more than I do.

As such, there's really no way to tell what anyone means with this phrase, which makes it useless.

    2) What he was actually saying, if you had read it, was that at one point he was new to this game, and MMOs in general, as are some new players now. And AT THAT TIME, it was harder to do what you're suggesting is harder now, and we could STILL DO IT, which kind of invalidates your point.

Now THAT I can definitely get behind. For new players who see that contacts sell enhancements, they're not going to know that they're getting MASSIVELY ripped off.

I'm not saying that a free player shouldn't need to earn SOs but they should be able to afford enough SOs to fill their slots without needing to resort to using debt or XP locking to farm influence.

Another option I'd suggest to help soften the impact would be the reintroduction of enhancement rewards for story arcs and task forces for anyone who isn't a VIP or Tier 4 Premium. Basically if you can't earn merit rewards for task completion you should at least get an SO instead.
There are other ways to increase influence gain to help with the purchase of enhancements other than debt or XP-locking. They've been discussed in the other thread several times. But you really can play the game, and with a few smart decisions, can afford a full set of SOs at level 22. Using respecs at key levels after that can make buying the next set of SOs very cheap. For instance, if you respec at level 27/28, you can sell the level 25 SOs back at full price, and combined with the influence you've earned from level 22-27/28 will get you a full set of new enhancements (and likely you'll have some left over). Then by the time you hit 32, you should have more than enough to buy level 35 SOs.
  8. Spending billions of chasing purple sets is like spending a couple hundred grand on a fancy sports car, then remembering that you're a construction worker and you needed a car that could haul stuff.

Keep in mind your end goal, and find a solution that gets you there, regardless of whether it costs you more or less. If it doesn't get you to your end goal, the build isn't good.

At many levels, even-level SOs and DOs are still better than same-level basic IOs. But perhaps I should have phrased it as, "the best enhancements they can get at their level," since they can't make use of IOs as free players.

To me what it really comes down to is that a person playing the game relatively normally should be able to afford basic gear without to much difficulty.
Well then you're going to have to define what is "too much difficulty." I know that I never felt that it was all that hard to afford SOs at level 22 and 27 if you took even rudimentary steps to make sure you were in a good place, and that was back before the market was even around. The XP smoothing may have affected this a bit, which is why small reductions may be in order. But if a new player expects to be able to buy everything they want with absolutely no effort on their part, why should the game allow that?

SOs are not all that expensive if you plan ahead. And new players shouldn't just be handed everything just because they're new and we think it will drive them away if they don't get SOs for free. I know that I never felt like quitting because of SO costs...and it actually made me feel more like I earned it once I could get the influence to buy the enhancements I needed.

The game needs to tread a fine line between making it too difficult and too hard to buy enhancements for free players. Make it too difficult, and they quit. Make it too easy, and they get bored, and then quit as well. Making it so that influence is basically meaningless since they can afford anything they want from level 1 up makes it too easy, and likely won't keep them anymore than if you made the prices sky-high for anyone but VIPs to afford.

I think that this thread and the player questions one along the same line don't give new, free players enough credit for being willing to work for stuff and expecting that they might have to put some effort in if they want better stuff. Even in this game, which really has been about a "gear chase" for quite some time now, just in different ways than other games. You've had people chasing SOs, then Hami-Os, and now Invention sets. Working for those things isn't a penalty.

    Mu Mastery?

Yuou have to go villain for a bit, but you can get it. You basically need to switch alignment to villain, then do one of the Patron arcs, and then you can switch back to hero-side once you complete the arc.
  12. A small reduction may be in order, but it shouldn't be so low that a free player should be given enough influence just from kills that they can always afford the best enhancements for their level. If they do that, then they might as well not allow free players to earn inf and just give away the DOs and SOs for free when you need them.
  13. The LotG Proc functions as a set bonus, basically, so it would only affect you. I think it would be the same for the Miracle Proc, but I'm not 100% sure on that.

Frozen Fists is fine in terms of damage, it just needs some animation tweaks as well. It currently does the same damage as a lot of other Tier 1 powers, it just animates 0.5 - 0.3 seconds slower than it should for that damage scale.

    GIS needs some significant help.

Frost is fine as it is, as long as you learn how to use it well. It does more damage than some similar cones, and less than some others. For instance, it does more than Jacob's Ladder, but less than Shadow Maul (which gets bonus damage). It does only slightly less than Breath of Fire, but has a much greater arc to it.

    The Walking Dead

It depends on the type of zombies we're dealing with.

For instance, the World War Z zombies went after dogs, but dogs were great at detecting them.

The remake of that zombie movie in the mall the zombies didn't care about the dog at all, so they'd be great for scouting missions if you could train them well enough, or for transporting goods to/from nearby buildings, as they did in that movie.

However, pets use up an enormous amount of resources (mostly food/water) that could be spent on humans. So mine would probably be a goner, despite how cute she is.

We can always domesticate some other species after the apocalypse.
  16. Angry Dungeon Master Online: The quests are rigged, there are a ton of traps and locked chests (even though the party has no rogues), every enemy is magic-resistant and clad in heavy armor. And if you somehow get past them and are about to complete the mission, an angry diety smites you.

This is basically my own plan as well. If I ever win one of those $200-300 million lotteries, my first task is to build a defendable castle, complete with renewable energy sources and it's own, internal well system for water near a larger water source and enough arable land to support about 20 people. Train some as farmers, some as fighters, and then hope for the best.

  19. I'd vote for Blaster. Go /Energy as your secondary, and you get a decent range of powers to help you deal more damage at range. Boost Range can be fun on it's own, allowing you to shoot from even further away.

Or, since it didn't come up, a Peacebringer might be a decent option you might want to look into.

Also, and not many people are probably aware of this, but they usually also do further screening to determine if your blood can be given to very young children. Carl would likely have been fine, but if it was an infant, there might have been some problems there.

Also, I would like to point out that I've never heard the Devs say that the game was designed around SOs. What they HAVE said is that they didn't make the current content any harder when they introduced IOs. Those are two very different points. One assumes that you need SOs to play from level 22 up, while the other does not make that assumption.

You are basing your case on two assumptions:

    1) That you absolutely need the best enhancements to play, or at least close to them, and

    2) That new players will have the expectation of being able to afford them.

Both of these are false. You can use DOs at level 22 and 27, if you want. They're cheaper, and still effective enough to get you buy. Then, replace them with SOs as they are dropped/you can afford them.

The second assumption is more the point, though. If I were to hop over to WoW or LotRO, which I've only ever played as a trial account, and started up a new character, I would NOT have the expectation that I would be able to afford all of the best stuff my first time through. Why is this? Because in general, that's not how games are designed. Most are designed so that the second/third/and so on times get a bit easier because you can afford a bit more.

A Freebie should not have the expectation that they can afford everything they want without taking the time to do so. Otherwise, what's the point of having influence for SOs at all? If the game was designed so that you could just get all of the enhancements you wanted, then there would be no point to having a currency at all that you'd need for the stores.
  23. Personal apartments have been asked for many times, though I don't know why you'd have to tie it to the market. Sure, it might make them money, but since this has been asked for for so long, why not give it to people instead of making them buy it (at least for VIPs)?

As for buying enhancement slots on the market? I really hope that the Devs NEVER do this. The balancing would be a nightmare, and at that point you're basically telling people that they can buy extra power, which isn't a great idea. You'd get (more) issues with Power Creep, where you'd need to develop content that would challenge people with both the normal amount of slots and the people who have bought as many slots as they can fit on the character. The power disparity between those two groups could be huge, depending on the sets involved.

As for the rest you've confused me. Is the Pool Power system outdated or is it fine? It seems strange that it could be both.
SS+CJ gives you some additional height, and there are plenty of obstacles out there that having CJ will allow you to get over that you couldn't before.

Also, I love Flight+CJ, as it gives you more air control, and you can leave CJ on, where you'd need to toggle between Hover and Fly.
  25. I look at this from a business standpoint. Right now, the Devs are selling the Rocket Board. If they made the travel powers inherent, who would buy the Rocket Board (lost revenues), and you'd piss people off who have already bought this item (bad press and angry fans). Neither of those will help them.

We get the choice of travel powers at level 6, with plenty of other options for traveling out there as well. I don't really see a need to make these inherent. And especially from a business perspective, it doesn't make any sense.
