Hi CuppaManga,
Moving it off the main screen is basically what I am doing, because on the main screen you loose the extra space for the Apple menu.
But for all my work the Dell monitor is the main screen, whereas to play COH I need the MBP display to be the main screen. It's a pretty simple switch...open System Pref. --> Displays --> Arrangement --> move the Apple menu bar, but it's involved enough that a little script would be handy.
I'll look into the Spaces feature as well.
Thanks -
I recently added an external monitor to my MBP...(a 24" Dell (2408WFP)...aside from the extra cost the 24" Cinema Display was not an option due to that stupid Mini DisplayPort (only DVI on my MPB)).
Anyway, love the set-up (aside from some color calibration issue with the Dell), but I find that I end up switching the Apple menu bar manually from one display to the other when I am playing COH in windowed mode, and was wondering if that is something that an Apple script could do instead?
Here's the set-up. The Dell is my main display with the Apple menu at the top. If I start the game before making the MPB screen the main display and go into windowed mode, I end up loosing space for the window bar at the top (any idea how to turn that off?) AND for the Apple menu. So I usually switch the main display to the MBP screen before I start the game and move the COH window over to the Dell monitor. That way I only loose the space for the window bar, but not for the Apple menu bar.
What I'd like is to have a scripted shortcut that will switch the main display from the Dell to the MPB display without me having to go into System Preferences. Sadly I have no idea about Apple scripts, so before I dive in I figured I'd check here if anyone has a suggestion.
Thanks. -
I haven't tried COH on my MacMini yet (I mainly use it as a media center - Plex for the win), but I strongly suggest upgrading it from 2GB of RAM to 4GB.
It really has significantly improved the performance of mine, and from what I understand it also doubles the amount of RAM that gets allocated to the graphics card. So it should have an impact on COH too.
I did the RAM upgrade myself. Was a lot cheaper, but definitely a bit tricky and not for the faint of heart. If you got that route, check the guides that are out there first, so you understand what you are getting yourself into.
I'll post if I get around to trying COH on it. -
Scholarman,
There were 2 different places you could sign up at...the one on the US site took only your e-mail address and the one hosted on the European site (but for US players) had a field where you could (with some difficulties... ) enter your tech specs.

This is really a fantastic development!!
Playing on a MacBook Pro right now and the game looks great under Bootcamp/XP, but it's the only reason I reboot these days. A Mac game client would be fantastic and I'll be happy to give any feedback that will help this along (signed up, and yes, there are issues with linefeeds and overall character count on the form).
I am wondering if it might be more constructive to split the discussion about the bonus items to a separate thread. That's obviously of interest to a larger group of people and I'd hate to see this great development for Mac users drowned.
Thanks a lot. -
Hey Solar,
I can't tell you what might have gone wrong, but I did have Leopard installed on my MacBook Pro before I set up Bootcamp/COH, so that should not be an issue. Actually Boot Camp now is officially only supported under Leopard anyway. -
I've also installed the updated Apple video drivers that FrankNospam had mentioned. During the install process it pretty much looked like I was updating using the regular nVidia drivers, so I am not sure how much customizing Apple actually did on those.
Anyway, they do work great and took me from I believe 101.xx (the Bootcamp 2.0 version) to 167.44.
So far this CoX on Mac has been a great experience. -
Thanks for the feedback on NTFS format. Pretty much echoes what I thought.
Frank, I'd love to hear how the new nVidia drivers work out. I am not having any problems with the Apple drivers (I am really impressed how good everything looks), but if "even better" is an option...sign me up! -
Hey CuppaManga,
Thanks for the guide. I was really helpful in making my decision to go from PC (Dell Inspiron) to Mac.
Got a refurbished Macbook Pro 17" (1920x1200, glossy). Somehow they included 4GB of RAM, instead of the 2GB they had in the specs - oh well, who am I to complain.
Anyway, set up Boot Camp (XP) today and COX runs beautifully on it. Very pretty.
Couple of questions you did not touch on in your guide.
What harddrive format did you choose in the set-up. Fat32 or NTFS? I chose NTFS for the bigger file size, and because someone mentioned that Apple is working on a driver that will allow both read AND write of NTFS volumes, but I was wondering if either file format actually performed better for games.
And what did you do in regards to the video drivers. Compared to what is available from NVIDIA the Apple drivers seems kind of old. Did you keep them, or did you upgrade (and if so what did you use)?
Thanks. -
The double XP was fun, especially if you had characters that you wanted to get "over the hump" (eg. travel power or stamina)!
Unfortunately, I could not get on to Freedom for most of the time and had play issues when I did. Therefore some of my main character did not feel the 2XP love...oh well. Still fun. -
To me the problem with the new, and for that matter the past couple of Updates is that the changes in the Power Sets completely overshadow the new content. When this one goes life I will be mostly dealing with getting reacquainted with my characters...the new content will be secondary.
Play balancing is a great idea, but one would think that as time goes by we would be getting closer to a "balance" and require less and less drastic changes. Apparently the opposite seems to be true with a whole lot of very fundamental changes occurring - again. This is really going in the wrong direction.
I don't think that we will ever have anything close to balance with all the powers combinations out there...and I don't think it is necessary. Not all heroes are created equal and I am at times happy to be the Daredevil next to the Hulk. If I want to be the Hulk, I will create one. That is the beauty of COH.
So....let's stop worrying about play balancing beyond the fundamentals and start concentrating on new content, new powers, new enemies. That is where I want to see the innovation. I have to admit that I have only skimmed the new stuff on Test...the Island looks nice, the new types of missions sound good, etc. The new powers seem disappointing...new animations mostly for a variation on existing powers... Not too many new costume options from what I can tell... THIS is where the efforts should be concentrated.
I love the game, I won't quit or even threaten to, but Updates have become more of a bummer than a joy...keep that in mind for the next one please.
