CoH on the new Mac Mini
Nice! Any chance you could tell us your average-ish framerate? Type "/showfps 1" (minus the quotes) to bring up your framerate in the upper right-hand corner. Type "/showfps 0" to make it go away.
Full-screen FPS would be nice, but hey, no big deal.
My G4 is having issues, so I'm debating one of the new Mini's or a Mac Book since Apple's kicked Intel's integrated video to the curb
edited after re-reading and seeing detail settings.
Street sweeping in Steel Canyon yielded about 35 average FPS but it varied widely depending on how much scenery was onscreen. A radio mission on the office map also gave about 35 average FPS.
Flying around Cap Au Diable averaged about 20 FPS with the same wide variance depending on scope of scenery as in Steel. Running a newspaper mission in the warehouse map seemed to average about 35 fps.
Grandville and the Arachnos Lab mission map are painful even when I lower the settings to Performance.
After significantly more playing time I can safely say that although the 9400M gives a solid performance it's running at the ragged edge of it's envelope in CoH (particularly red-side). All in all I'm happy to use my new Mini as my main CoX machine, but I don't mind running the game below max settings or with frame rates averaging in the low 30's. Anyone looking for better performance than this would probably not be happy with the 9400M.
So long as I don't dip into the teens I'm happy
Thank you!
Sorry to resurrect an old thread, I wanted clarification from the OP or anyone with the Mac Mini.
When you said you have the (new) baseline Mac Mini with the 2.0 upgrade, you mean the 2.0 Core 2 Duo with 120 GB Hard Drive? And you expanded it to 2 MB?
I ask because my old secondary PC is slowly dying and I'm thinking about buying the Mac Mini. I've never had a mac before so I figured I'd start small.
My local apple store happens to carry the 2.0 Core 2 Duo with 320 GB Hard Drive, which is the higher package, but they dont happen to have any with the better processor or more memory. Of course, 320 model has 2 GB of memory on its baseline, I just can't upgrade to 4GB.
So, if I get the 320 GB model, I'm thinking I'll match your specs (2.0 GHz Core 2 Duo processor, with 2 GB memory).
Also, I'm probably going to by a mini-dvi to dvi converter if they have one, so that I can use my old (but quite serviceable) 19" viewsonic flatscreen, to keep my costs down at first. It only runs at 1024x768 or possible 1280x1024, so hopefully my performance will be fine.
What do you think? Anyone else have experience with the new Mac Mini with the 320/2.0GHz/4GB setup?

The model you're talking about is the one I have. 2.0GHz, 2GB, 320GB.
It came with a DVI adapter in the box, so you shouldn't need to buy one.
As a general home computer I have been very pleased with it so far.
Good luck and happy computing
So, you're saying it works well with COH?
I mean, sure, you have that model and you are posting on the COH boards. But, I'm just paranoid, so I like to confirm that you are not only satisfied with that model, but that you are satisfied with playing COH on that computer?
Sorry, I just have issues sometimes.
Thanks,
Lewis

It's a highly subjective experience. One person's "fine" is another's "unplayable", but I tend to be nitpicky about smooth graphics.
I can tell you that I'm quite satisfied with it's performance in CoH, except for the odd laggy bits since i14. In missions it's very smooth, and the only time I get lag in zones is near AE buildings. Some bases are a little laggy too.
I'm running a 22" monitor though, which probably stresses the chipset a little with the graphics load, even when playing in a 1280x1024 window. I know when I play on my Macbook (identical hardware, but a smaller screen) I don't notice any lag at all.
I generally play on the Performance setting on both machines since i14.
Thanks for the reply!

I haven't tried COH on my MacMini yet (I mainly use it as a media center - Plex for the win), but I strongly suggest upgrading it from 2GB of RAM to 4GB.
It really has significantly improved the performance of mine, and from what I understand it also doubles the amount of RAM that gets allocated to the graphics card. So it should have an impact on COH too.
I did the RAM upgrade myself. Was a lot cheaper, but definitely a bit tricky and not for the faint of heart. If you got that route, check the guides that are out there first, so you understand what you are getting yourself into.
I'll post if I get around to trying COH on it.
The Video RAM available doubles from 128MB at 1GB of RAM to 256MB at 2GB of RAM. 4GB of RAM also yields 256MB of Video RAM.
I'm glad I found this thread. Like others before me, I've become tempted to ditch my PC for a Mac in general and the Mini in particular. I'm so glad to read that TheNavigator is playing the game in performance mode on a Mini. The mind just boggles. If I try and take my PC beyond the minimum possible graphics then I have lag like you wouldn't believe. I tried performance once and the menus were even so slow that it took me five minutes just to set things back to minimum graphics. Granted, I could upgrade my graphics card, RAM, etc in the existing computer but I'm pretty down on PCs at this point and am interested in trying the other kind of computer: Mac.
Of course, if CoH wasn't available for the Mac then there's no way I'd switch.
I'm running it on my iMac 27 (ATI 4850) on with all the graphics settings maxed out and full 2560X1440 resolution and I get between 32 and 60 FPS depending on where I am. That's mostly in Atlas and the Hollows though, haven't checked everywhere.
Crossing my fingers and hoping it can handle Ultra ;-).
The total silence of my iMac is SUCH an improvement over my old tower, but I really looked long and hard at the mini, finally decided against it because I'll have to upgrade from 4 Gig eventually... Well and because the screen on the iMac 27 is just soooo nice .
Have you ever put a watt meter on the mini? The iMac runs about 135-150 watts most of the time, wondering how much the mini uses.
I picked up a new baseline Mac Mini yesterday (with 2GB RAM upgrade) and spent the evening waiting for CoH to finish installing. Today I was able to play for an hour over lunch so I thought I'd post some impressions.
I have a 22" widescreen monitor, but I prefer to play in windowed mode, so I ran the game in a 1280x1024 window at the recommeded graphic settings.
With no other programs running the system monitor showed about 3/4 RAM used at peak, so 2GB should probably be considered the minimum required to run the game without trouble.
Game play was smooth and responsive. I noticed some initial lag when approaching high population concentrations (the statue in Atlas, the Portal Corp courtyard) but no jerkiness or lag in missions or while street sweeping. CoH runs well on the 9400M.
The fan on the Mini kicked in after playing for about three minutes and stayed on the rest of the time but was barely audible. The case remained cool to the touch throughout.
Sound quality on my crummy speakers was poor, but that can hardly be blamed on the Mini. There were no sound artifacts, dropouts or oddities.
Two thumbs up.
