  1. consume really doesnt need to be slotted with end mods IOs, with the accuracy involved, it will work just fine without them. Taunt really isnt necessary, whereas consume actually serves a purpose of more than just getting set bonuses, plus the bonuses from the taunt IOs are more important than pushing consumes end drain through the roof.

    Maneuvers is not something I would even consider. It has hellacious end use, from what I can tell is more just an IO holder. Like I said in my original post, I do not like building for regen unless you can get that regen to an insane level, and that is apparently how you reallocated those slots. Since I had to take Ring of Fire to get Fireball anyway, I used that as my slotholder, and those set bonuses give almost as much S/L defense as maneuvers does, even with the slots you added to it, I still get half of the recharge bonus you added with LotG, and I get to pick another power to boot. Plus that whole set costs less than any of the single LotGs you slotted into it.

    Dropping RotP is not in the cards, we like it, it is more useful than people give it credit for.

    Reducing the recharge on fiery embrace and buildup is also detrimental, if for no other reason than because Hasten isn't in this build. At the very least, keeping the HOs in BU for the ToHIt buff, switched FE to recharge reduction IOs as there is no To Hit component in it

    Also, as far as scorch and incinerate go, placing those Mako's Bites is really expensive for a very little return, only a few more points of damage with them slotted in.
  2. Well, gonna throw my hat in the ring, my gf wants to play her old fire/fire/pyre tanker again, and I spend a lot more time build tinkering than she does, so I got to try it out.

    I worked this up with the same mindset I have for my DA/DM tank, but tweaked of course due to there being more AoE in her sets. I used a build that was on the tanker guides forums initially, but completely reworked it because it was regen based, and well, to put it bluntly, it's better to not get hit than to hope you can heal it off.

    She feels the same way I do about RotP, the utility of it is nice, especially in those "oh [censored]" situations.

    I came to the same conclusion as DocOz on the consume slotting, but seeing as I am going with S/L instead of positional, I went with perfect zinger instead. I did something similar on my DA tanker already.

    Kinetic Combats and Oblits are still expensive, but seriously, not that expensive, and it's not like influence is hard to come by.

    The purple sets will be filled with Oblits and Posi Blasts til she can get em.

    Will this tank be as tough as a Stone in Granite? Of course not, but it will be far from squishy, and will be able to hold its own against most Invulns out there. I said most, as I have seen a rash of really crappy ones lately.

    Any input would be appreciated, with the exception of "scrap it and go with this." My DA i built in a similar fashion and is tough as nails, so I know the base of the build is sound.

  3. Well, I am not one to judge, but I took the build posted and tweaked it a bit.

    My gf had pretty much given up on one of her favorite toons, her fire/fire tanker. Did tons of damage, but in certain situations the incoming damage was too much. Looking at the builds listed here, they were built towards regen, and well, were kinda squishy.

    I tinkered a bit, and here is my proposed build for her fire/fire/pyre tanker.

    any input would be appreciated.

  4. Well, I have been tinkering around with my build a bit, trying to work in different things.

    I got rid of my fears, and tried OG+stalagmites for mitigation, not happy with the results of that. I really don't like OG at all, watching them wander off while disoriented has really been annoying the hell out of me. Plus, I want more damage, and I think I figured out a build that will suit my playstyle. Plus I decided to fit in taunt, as I am finding that in pugs a lot of people are too impatient to allow the aggro to build a sec.

    My defense is softcapped, not sure why I am just below 70% on the resists.

    My end use vs. recovery isn't the best, but it is about where my current builds is, and I have no end issues. Now that I have Portal Jockey and the Atlas Medallion, even less so. I really wish that theft of essence proc worked more, as I really don't see that much come out of it, and I am looking hard. I actually use DC more for aggro and damage than for end.

    I really tried pushing up the recharge rates on my powers, as right now I rely heavily on Sands of Mu, which I hate. Being planted for 3 seconds is bad enough with Shadow Maul. This should open up my attack chain a lot, and push my damage up a good bit, both aoe and single target.

    I thought about pushing into an APP, but decided I didnt want to give up as much as I would have had to to make it worthwhile. Would have boosted my AoE damage a bit, but I would have had to 6slot the 2 powers leading up to it to make up the defense I would have lost, and would have lost some max end/hp, and well, the trade off just wasnt worth it to me.

    Anywho, here is the build I am going to go with when the next freespec drops, dont feel like wasting any more of my other ones, one was enough. Unless, I get really bored and decide to run a respec trial. Then I wont be able to help myself.

    This is still my favorite tank by far, even with my current build leaving a lot to be desired. Yeah, once I finally get all my Kinetic Combats, it's respec time, freebie or not..........

    One last thing, before anyone mentions it. I will NEVER drop Soul Transfer from my build. Couple reasons, one, I actually use it strategically. DR hasnt recharged, or those rare occasions that my end is dry, I will let myself drop, then pop it as soon as I die. Mass disorient, and I have time to get all my toggles back on and get back in the fight before they all meander off, with a full life and end bar to boot. Or I will use Self Destruct, and then pop it. Also, I have never been one to hold to the "you should NEVER die as a tank" creedo. Sometimes things just get out of hand, or someone else pulls another group because they arent paying attention, or whatever else. Soul Transfer alone has allowed me to regain control of the situation while the rest of the team regrouped/rez'd, what have you, as opposed to the automatic team wipe/bitchfest that comes with those types of sitautions. That's just my take on that tho.

  5. Exactly, efficient stacking made any tank farmworthy back in the day. I sucked at it, but my gf was amazing with it. With her Ice/Fire tank on the chimeara farm (puppies and dreck had the timers on them then) she would round up a crapton of ninjas, hop into the graveyard next to a corner of the fence, and you would just watch em all fold into each other. Then came the FSC and all were dead.

    I was more of a dumpster diver when I farmed *shrug*, they would stack in there, but a ton would get stuck on the walls sometimes, usually cus I was too damn lazy to give em space. 4-6 hours of farming a day, I started cutting corners.
  6. there were APPs before ED, for around 6 months or so anyway. but seriously, I knew a couple guys that could clear a map quick as hell with Inv/SS, just by the sheer number of mobs they could pull at once. I used to race one on the Dreck map regularly on my Fire/Ice tanker. Granted, didnt seem like they were going as fast because they spent most of their time rounding them up, but when it was kill time, it was just insane. They only needed one AoE, when it one shot most of the mobs.
  7. well, I don't know about most versatile, but definitely very fun.

    I think my next project with mine is to come up with a build that maximizes damage, but tries to at least stay close to the def cap.

    I dont miss the fears, and my experiment with OG+Stalagmites has left a lot to be desired. With my playstyle, I think I can just skip all three to be honest, I try to be mobile while tanking, and while the fears help, to be honest the only time I am not on all boss maps, I am in groups where it is just not an issue. As for OG, i have been noticing on numerous occaisons the damn mobs wander away from my Death Shroud so i have to chase em back down anyway, whereas if they were awake they would be dead a few secs later anyway.

    I know I will never be able to nuke groups like I do with my inv/fire, but I think i should be able to find a happy medium between aoe and ST damage. I have found some really odd IO combinations that are working well for me, and I don't mind foregoing the damage of say Midnight Grasp, if it means it opens up slots somewhere else. I used MG as an example because 6 slotted with enfeeble operation gives over 5% s/l def by itself. Anyway, gonna see what I can monkey with.
  8. I redid my DA/DM, still trying to get the IOs filled, so it is not quite as strong as it was, but once I finish the IO slotting will be softcapped with @70% resist still. I skipped the fears, with my playstyle and the groups I ran with, the end use didnt justify having them, and even when i solo'd didnt help as much as I would have liked.

    That said, end is no problem at all now, and have been using dark consumption more for aggro and a bit of damage.

    I spent most of yesterday pissed off because I kept hearing that crap. I jumped into an 8 man spawn of bosses and held them all myself while everyone else dropped just to prove my point. The loudmouth that got me angry in the first place made a comment about not being so tough with my heal, and pointed out that I died once. I told him to go find a stoner and quit team. The whole reason I got soul transfer is this. In large spawns, in those rare times that my end is flatlined, or my DR just hasnt quite recharged, I will actually allow myself to die, or (and sometimes I will do this in farms JUST because I think it's funny) will self destruct. The second I die I hit ST, which disorients the group, I have enough time to retoggle, including aggro auras, and I have the aggro back. Unfortunately some people just see you dieing and start complaining, but some actually catch on to what you are doing.

    It was kind of the other side of the pendulum tho from my experience the other day, where the group accidentally aggroed to more groups of mobs, they all died, and I just plugged away why they all hosp'd and came back. Actually had a couple people who sat and watched amazed for a few minutes. Having someone actually express that they were impressed by how long you can live through that kind of thing made it all worthwhile. They didnt even notice that I died and rez'd when when i ran out of end (I was chatting and late hitting DC). This, by far, is my favorite tank.
  9. before ED, inv/ss was a beast in farming. Can't speak for it now. DA/SS isn't going to be too much better, but all I was saying is that it was viable. With the damage aura and a second aoe from epics, should work decently.

  10. yeah, with the build I put up, DA/SS should do really well for farming. Fireball is nice, but kind of overrated, the damage from stalagmites is a little less, but the mitigation stacked with Oppressive Gloom should up the survivability tremendously. I am actually thinking of rebuilding my DA/DM and getting rid of the fear and stacking OP with Stalagmites, or using that as a second build.

    as far as whether or not DA is going to be worse than inv or wp for farming, can't speak for WP but it will be worse than inv in that inv has more def/res without IOs. The mitigation in DA wont make up the difference unless paired with more disorients. End use on my INV/Fire is just ugly, as bad as my DA was before I started IOing him out. However, he is a beast in farming.
  11. if you are seriously planning on farming with this toon, then yeah, IOing it out would be a good idea. Believe it or not, most of the IOs you need are pretty cheap, and if you farm AE missions for tickets you can make stupid amounts of money pretty easy. Bronze level 35 random rolls are your friend.

    drop soul transfer or hand clap and get weave, and slot stalagmites for disorient. I would drop hand clap myself, the kb is annoying. other than a bit of slot balancing, you can make that toon tough as hell.

    Here is what I would do, if it were me, with IOs. The IO sets I used, with the exception of the Kinetic Combats, are pretty cheap, and most can be farmed with bronze reward rolls. Softcapped def, respectable resistance, good recharge, and the disorients should stack for good mitigation/control. I even put in taunt, which i almost never use. I even skipped Soul Transfer, because on my DA, I'm not even fully IO'd yet and I almost never use it, unless I am messing around and pop self destruct.

  12. dark/dark is incredibly viable, check Jebe the Pirates guide. It is definitely a late bloomer, and once you can start getting it slotted with IOs it really starts to shine. I have impressed quite a few people with my DA/DMs survivability.

  13. yeah, i may reroll my elec/elec brute as a tank, or even try ela/SS, that just sounds really nasty thinking about it.

    If they switch up CP, that will be perfect, as it is complete waste in ela. A heal would be very nice, as aid self leaves a lot to be desired. Aid self works fine in most content, but if you ever try to fire it in large groups, your timing has to be pretty damn good. I used to have no problems, didnt play the toon for over a year and is frustrating as hell now, so i dropped it. If you set it up similar to a strong DA setup, makes them very tough, with unlimited end.

    as far as the kb protection in grounded, if you arent on the ground solid, it is just silly. I consistently got knocked on my [censored] when i would LR into large groups until i slotted a kb protection IO.
  14. as far as only being good with IOs, I worked my way into them and was fully slotted with SOs at one point, my end use was hellish, but I was still pretty tough. If you had read all of what I posted, I still havent finished all my IO sets, specifically the Kinetic Combat sets. That said, my survivability is excellent.

    Soloing an AV for slotting acc into DR is not the best of examples. By the time you really get into that, it is not unrealistic to have switched from SOs to IOs. Slotting SO heals into DR is wasteful, the heal is big enough to do without it and end reduction is more important, switching a couple of recharges for acc later on isnt a big deal. 55% end reduction is not nearly enough for DR, especially paired with WM. In a decent group I barely need to use DR, but when I do, end is usually short as well. Nothing like popping DR, then having your togs drop and getting mauled.

    and yeah, they are both right, reactive armor in your shields is key, and kinetic combat in your ST attacks. with just the reactive armors I noticed a pretty good difference, and they are pretty cheap. still trying to get those KCs tho, much harder to come by
  15. Great guide, and as I have stated in a couple DA threads, I have used Jebe's advice to great effect. My DA/DM is my favorite tank at this point. End is not nearly the problem people make it out to be, and will only get better as I finish IOing my build.

    I went a little different than he did, but this is his guide, and I went the way I did for personal preference more than anything else. I am very interested in seeing what you do for the heavy fear build.
  16. ok, you need to start from scratch, or you are gonna get hurt bad.

    You are heavily lacking in defense. With CJ, CoD, and Weave, plus set bonuses, you can easily hit the softcap.

    ToF and CoF are sexy, they make you a fear machine, and you can lockdown bosses almost instantly.

    Here is my current build, hasten is not necessary, nor is the self rez, I just like em. My tank is tough as nails, and puts out decent damage, but is lacking on AoE, but that is the nature of the set. Make sure you drop a theft of essence into Dark Regen, I am working my [censored] off to get one.

  17. Hehe, when i saw this post my first thought was of the thread i put up not long ago.......and Jebe was good enough to link it!

    I based my current build off of advice from Jebe, and my god is it awesome.

    am currently at 49, should hit fiddy tonight. As far as how it runs, I have been tanking boss mishes with it since @38, no problem, and I have outlived most of the tanks I have run with. I still have my kinetic combat sets to get, as well as my LotG's, miracle +end, and the one purple set. also need the theft of essence for dark regen. It does use a lot of end, BUT, and this may sound odd, my invuln actually uses more. So far I have put maybe 275 million into my build.

    one thing, someone said something about slotting accuracy in dark regen, dont bother, before i got my IOs in it, i had it slotted with 3end redux and 3 recharge. It doesnt need accuracy, you hit 2 targets and you are full.

    I friggin love this tank, it is by far my favorite, and I have a 50 inv/fire &amp; stone/ss, had a 50 fire/ice that is only on test now, and also have a 44 ice/wm and a 44 WP/EM. This tank is tough as nails, and the feeling of having everyone scratching their heads wondering how the hell you are living through stuff that is murdering everyone else is just indescribable. Its not as tough as my stone for sure, but its not THAT much softer either and doesnt require a kin to be fun, and I do miss my invulns AoEs. Most of the time I get asked when i join a group how I like DA, and when I say its awesome, and is tough as hell, they kinda laugh. So far I am pretty sure I have put a pretty good dent in the misconception of DA being squishie.

    Yeah, just realized I messed up with lightning field, and the miracle in health may be a bit of overkill. Been thinking about switching up Jacob's Ladder.

    My build before I mucked about with this one was so squishy I definitely went a bit overkill on the defense. And darkest night definitely gives me some breathing room, gonna retool and repost later/.

    Every time I leave AP I get a tell within about 5 minutes. Every time.

    Elec/Ela build

    Well, after taking a very long break from CoX, and an even longer break from redside, I decided to revisit my elec/elec brute.

    I was less than thrilled with how he performed. Especially when I entered the AE.

    Having a lot of experience with tanks, and having had to figure out how to make them into the beasts they were back in the day, I decided to try to do the same with my brute. The following is the build I came up with, and slotted this way, with just SOs, I have noticed a big difference.

    Some things of note, I took the KB IO to shore up the annoying feature of grounded, seeing how I was sick of getting knocked on my tail every time i used LR.

    I did not take Aid Self. My experiences with AS are horrible, it burns way too much end, and gets interrupted more often than not. Nothing like burning all my end trying to get off a crappy heal, better off just carrying greens.

    Soul Mastery, and specifically Darkest Night are awesome. The less I get hit, the longer I live.

    You will see that with this build, I will be almost softcapped on s/l defense with over 58% resistance to s/l damage. Not too shabby.

  21. There is no easy cure all solution to the problem, and AE is not the big problem anyway.

    Complaining that someone didnt go through the regular content for contents sake is just stupid. At least half the players out there never even read the mission information or the dialog. It's like what was said before, it's the path of least resistance.

    I am more bothered by people that never learn how to play their toons. Unfortunately, there will ALWAYS be idiots that NEVER learn how to play their toons, These were around long before AE. Toons with all four travel pools. Toons who can't figure out how to slot their powers if their lives depended on it. People that play kheldians. This happens in every game, but it was never as obvious in this one until AE. If anyone has played other MMOs, they have seen it there too. I will use WoW for an example. Having a large amount of experience in that game, and with powerleveling being a bit harder, not a lot harder, but a bit, you would think that there would be very few nooblets at the level cap. Unfortunately, that is not the case. There are tons of them. In fact, it is harder to find a skilled player than it is to find an idiot that got carried through 3/4s of the content. It was so bad I actually ran across people that had gear from places they swore they had never been to, swore blind they had never raided, but had tier gear, which for those that don't know is bound to that toon the second they pick it up.

    Taking away the AE will help a little bit, but the real issue is that a rather large number of players just dont care to actually learn their toons.

    They should put in a second tutorial that is account based that requires you to run at a specific level on your first toon to learn about things like enhancements and slotting, or just set up the first 6 or 10 levels AS a tutorial, with the missions set around actually teaching you something. The second you zone into AP you get directed to the contact that starts the tutorial missions and have them cover more than just inspirations and running around. When you level, a toon tells you about enhancement slotting, and FORCES you to slot an enhancement.

    Then move the AE building to a different part of town, and get rid of the contact for it, or at least not have the contact available til level 20, so it is a little less accessible to the brand new player, the option would still be open for vets to run there at level one. To kill the broadcast spam, just make an AE channel.

    There is no easy fix for this, and the problem was around a long time before AE, but something definitely has to be done.

  22. I love the datamining comment. Hate to tell you this, but AE is far from the easiest, or even fastest leveling that has ever occurred in this game.

    Anyone remember the old blinkie mish? You could be in a different zone grinding away while the guy clickin the blinkies got you an insane amount of xp with regards to level. The krakens farms, which were all kinds of fun. Oh, and don't forget the set and forget BP farms, no server reset and you could hit 50 in like 24 hours and didnt even have to be at the computer.

    All that PLing, and they smoothed the leveling curve. Now, if your datamining comment held out, they would have made it HARDER to level, not easier. Hell, double XP, I mean really, I am surprised you arent whining about that too.

    Now, I don't particularly like seeing noobs get PLed. I leveled my first toon the hard way, went through the content, and most of my PLed toons got a few levels then ground a few levels just so I knew how to play them. That said, PLing and vet badges dont mean a bloody thing when it comes to player skill. I was in a mish the other day, playing a tank, and there were 2 morons with kheldians and at least 2 years worth of vet badges(i checked) that couldnt grasp that knocking the mobs away from the tank into another group was a bad thing. After telling them this 4 times, I was asked to "chill out". The mish went to hell, and everyone eventually quit, cus we got smashed.

    This is the fate of most of the evil farms out there. The people that are unorganized and trying to just get quick levels. Whether they do it in farms, or TFs, or regular contact missions is really a moot point. AE didnt create these morons, they are your fellow players, and to be honest, there are a lot of em.

    If I PL a toon, it is because I want to try something new, and dont feel like grinding through those first 30 levels. On my first 50 I soloed when I couldnt find a group, and grinded my [censored] off, on an emp/elec def. Oh, and all the whining about not being able to find groups doing content is crap. On that same emp I had a harder time finding groups than i do on any of my lowbies now. I have been asked to do more TFs of every level than I ever did on my emp when I was grinding him up the hard way.

    You don't like the way I play, go pound sand. No one is making you do it, so why do you feel that it is your job to tell me how I should play. I used to love the old Shadowhunter farm. That was taken away from me, then Dreck, then made it so I cant stack up ninjas like playing cards, then ED, which by the way made the game so much better half the people I know quit. Some of us ran those missions cus they were FUN. For a game that has a terribly limited end game, taking away what is fun makes me want to play something else, like WoW. Oh wait, I quit WoW, cus after I got bored playing my level 70, the last thing I wanted to do was grind up another toon doing the same content I already did before, grinding out levels that took forever, and I knew that game well enough to level up relatively quickly.

    Jebe, I like the set up you have a bit more than mine. May just adjust the one I came up with a bit more tho, as I don't know if I can bring myself to slot brawl.

    As far as either build being expensive, I am not that worried with that. I have a 50 stoner, 50 invuln, and a 50 kin, so a farming I will go.

    Appreciate all the help, I haven't had this much trouble planning out a tank before, but I do believe it will be rewarding.
