was thinking of building up a DA/DM tank, always was interested in those sets, but never could bring myself to level a scrapper (they are too squishy for my taste). I have a lot of experience with tanks, think this one will be number 6 for me. What I don't have a terrible amount of experience with is IOs, as my play has been sporadic since they came out, and I have been too lazy to really get a handle on them.

anywho, here is the build I came up with in Mid's, melee def is pretty much capped, decent s/l def and 70% s/l resistance

You might want to take a gander at the "Critique my Frankenslotting" thread down a few from this one; we get into a discussion of the merits of typed vs. positional defense for a Dark/ tank. (I'm a typed def advocate myself.) Whichever you pick, you should probably stick with that as much as possible; Energy is Dark's weakness, so you want to make sure that's covered as much as possible.

Looking at your build, Death Shroud and Shadow Punch are very underslotted, and your shield toggles are overslotted. You can easily hit the ED limit with 4 set enhancements in your resistance powers, and IMO adding more slots is a waste unless you are getting a *very* desirable set bonus.

A full set of Obilterations is a problematic choice for a Dark/ tank; the Melee defense bonus is terrific, but there is very, very little end reduction in the set. I prefer Eradications for PBAoE attacks because you can get the def bonus with just 3 enhancements and then you can use another set to round out your slotting.

Dark Regen uses a huge amount of end--I'd definitely recommend that you slot it more heavily for end reduction. 60% or above is good. I think you should also consider picking up Op Gloom instead of Soul Transfer--it's very 'end cheap' and provides a lot of mitigation with almost no slotting.

I pretty much agree with everything Findulias is saying. You are underslotting for end on your attacks and heavy end users and overslotting your shields for end reduction. Also, while the theft of essence proc in dark regeneration is great (mandatory imo) since it can turn your heal power into a heal+end power, I advise against slotting it in siphon life since this attack only works against one target. It works wonders in dark regen but you will be greatly disappointed with the proc in siphon life.

It is much easier to hit your defense soft caps if you take CoD, Hover or CJ (or both!), weave and then socket for S/L defense. Most attacks have a s/l component and the attack engine will use whichever defense is highest against the components of the attack. For example, let's say you are being targeted for an energy blast by a mob. This attack has an energy component and a smashing component (look at the dmg numbers in City of Data). My tank has over 20% defense to energy damage but has 46% defense to smashing damage. Since my smashing defense is higher, the attack engine uses this percentage against the mob's to-hit roll to calculate whether or not the attack hits. If the attack consist of nothing but energy damage, then the attack engine would use my energy defense.

Once you have your defenses up (and yes S/L defense is your friend, read Call_Me_Awesome's invuln guide) slot for +max end and only socket for +recovery when the option for +max end is not available. Think of +max end bonus as max end AND recovery. couple the +max end bonuses with the +max end accolades. The +recovery uniques in health are perfect especially since there is no +max end alternative. I run with no less than 9 toggles at the same time for any given period and I'm still missing Portal Jockey. Needless to say I don't worry about endurance.

I figured the +max life was a bonus you received from your positional defense bonuses and not a bonus you slotted for as a priority but if you were actively looking for this, I'd say not to focus on this as first priority. This is more important than regen however, do not look at regen as a priority at all.

yeah, was looking primarily at the melee defense, and was using the s/l to cover the aoe/ranged components. With my playstyle melee def was my biggest priority. Will look towards s/l instead now. And yeah, I was kind of concerned with end use. May drop conserve power for OG, as much as i like conserve power when its up, it is down enough that I can just pop blues instead.

Will look at those guides and then adjust

Looking good, just a couple of things...

Consider resocketting Cloak of Fear for more accuracy and end reduction. It is one of the highest end users and the base accuracy is piss-poor. I like stacking this with Touch of Fear but it has to hit first .

Unless I counted wrong, you can get another s/l defense bonus from Kinetic Combat. You can socket this in brawl or boxing.

Bleh, expensive is subjective, bid low and leave your bids up for a few days. You'll be surprised on how much you can save doing so. It only gets expensive if you "buy it now".

hmmm. I've been a bit unhappy with my dark/dark tank.
I tried a different approach, fear and max healing and endurance (no endurnace == horrible death), but I wasnt happy with my defense.
The fears are very endurance intensive (I use this approach on my ss/dark brute, but she has a better CoF).

Here is my alt build, I'd welcome any comments/improvements upon it. I figured, even if my melee defense is low, dark regen will cover that slack. Thus, a bit more emphasis on range.

Empty slots are for 'potential' pvp IO's (uniques).

as a side note, this is my planned alt build. I usually do 2 builds, solo/small team/competent team, and large/deadly team/save them from themselves team build.

This is for maximum survivability, letting the team do their thing (I really dont like dying). My other build is much, much, much more damage/solo friendly

Sorry, I didn't notice the post as I was bantering with Kruunch. From what I can tell, (and not much since I can't use Mid's at work for set bonuses) it looks like you didn't slot defense bonuses for defense, typed or positional. Adding defense is what keeps from having to depend on dark regen, which keeps my end bar blue.

Also, it looks like your heavy hitter, midnight grasp is underslotted. You want this thing to hit and hit big.

Personally I didn't take any powers from the presence pool because frankly, I wanted to use the power selections elsewhere. I can see the potential but it appears to be a bigger slot and power selection switch for me to consider it at this time.

Theft of Essence +chance for end in Dark Regen is like Adam and Eve, Abbott and Costello, Bonny and Clyde. A complete waste of merits/influence/time/enhancement slot in siphon life imo. What makes it shine in dark regen is the fact that it will target multiple mobs in one application. This is not the case with siphon life ,and if you're spamming it to see some benefit then you're not using your heavy hitters. If you expect to be gaining endurance by using this IO in siphon life you will be disappointed.

If you decide to resocket for defenses, I suggest looking into S/L defense over positional. Try socketting reactive armors and kinetics combat. You may have to resocket other powers for max end which is fine, but make sure you socket for +max end over +recovery first and only socket for +recovery when there is no optionfor +max end. The +rec uniques in health are fine but the +regen really aren't needed. You have 2 heals fercrissakes!

Gah! Even on a team build I don't how you can stand such underslotted attacks. It is certainly possible to build a sturdy, team-oriented tank that doesn't skimp so much on offense.

I don't have any experience with the Presence pool to speak of, but do those powers really add much to a build that already has CoF and ToD?

As for your slotting, after our last exchange I'm sure you can guess what I'm going to say...drop the Imperviums for Reactive Armors, and slot your attacks with Eradication and Kinetic Combat. I'd also drop the Presence Pool for some more attacks and OG--but then, even my team tanks are very offensively oriented!

I've gotten my DA/DM tank to lvl 43. I keep fiddling with mids to try and find the best setup for my play style. I don't have what I would call a perfect answer yet, which is why I haven't contributed much to the thread yet. IF I can get everything I'm thinking of, my tank would be sitting around 31% s/l def, 70% s/l resist, end rec. at 3.52/s with end usage at 1.38/s.... But knowing me I'll change my mind tomorrow.

Short answer, I'm 50. I wouldnt/couldnt handle that build leveling. Even attack heavy, I want that thrilled with my dark/dark tank.

I just want somethign I can go into a nasty AE mission, or a group of aoe happy blasters and know I can control the situation (or mostly).

yes/no. CoF only affects minions. With presence pool I can affect bosses and lts. Plus, ToD and Intimidate let me handle AV's and multiple bosses. Quite a few times we've aggro'd a nearby mob, and this saved the day. I've also tanked the renegade vanguard easily, where my max invul tank died (this was before def debuff resistance, so now, I dont know). This was my brute. It works VERY well. I've out tanked some tanks.

My dark/dark tank uses OG more, and I skipped COF and presence pool for more damage. The mag on CoF is different on brutes/tanks, btw. That is why I was thinking of applying it to my tank. I havent done this build it, but seriously considering it. All my other tanks are max def builds, I dont mind one being max heal.

OG is a great aura, but I really, really, really dislike them wandering away. I like them near me (even if it isnt an immediate benefit, like invincibility). CoF does cause the to stay and fear, but it has a horrible accuracy and endurance drain. I like to stack. If I was dark/mace, I'd agree 100% with you. Now, if I'm heal heavy, I worry about endurance for long AV fights.


The biggest question for me is:
Can I increase my defense and not need my heal powers?
This saves massive endurance. Thus my post and request for help. It might be slotting reactive and kinetics,a s you suggested. I wont need the heals as much, thus saving endurance (which is good, as I wont have the imperviums).

If I dropped the presence pool, I'd drop CoF and get OG. I HATE the wander off, but it does hit/work effectively on minions.

I love the double stacking fear on my brute. Im not sure where the best line of survivability lies, thus my request for comments :-)

Plus team tank isnt just having 17 foes around me, it can be that single AV, where dark regen isnt a sure thing.

Like I said, my other team tank builds are near/at max defense, and do have attacks (I think in only one case did I slot an attack with a non attack IO set (e.g. stuns)). I dont mind him being different, but I do want him EFFECTIVE.

Listening to the suggestion here, I think I realized my mistake.
before the typed defense boost (IO's only gave typed or positional), I was going for positional. Thas my current build.

Also, with dark, is melee/SL defense as helpful as range/energy? Asking, since you have melee heals. You cant heal off them at range. I prefer SL defense on my fire tank (self heal), but dark has accuracy based heals. Then, SL will help MUCH more with AV's (and you'll need the heal anyways) ... Ok, Im thinking too much.

Strange, I have 2 darks, and I still dont know. dark/ is a strange beast.

My leveling build mixed in both and did fine. There were times where I wished I had picked a toggle over an attack and vice versa but it was never build breaking.

Yeah but are they NOOB blasters?! :P Anyway, you can have a build that handles this and AV's. Actually it's intended for this exactly.

Yes and no. You will always need a heal since you have to mitigate against things like heavy energy damage, defense debuffs (of which you have no resistance) and -recharge. Slot for S/L defense. It's the easiest to cap due to requiring less slots.

CoF on a brute is far more effective, and since im dark/ss, presence pool just makes sense.

Im dark/dark, but I'm building it closer to my ss/dark brute.
The synergy isnt the same (ss/ has rage, so cof hits all the time).
