Staff/EA build

I am starting a Staff/Energy Aura build and my search Fu is weak today. Are there any gotcha's with either of these that I should keep an eye out for?

I have read on the staff, but have not seen many current teardowns for Energy Aura.

One of my mains is a Staff/EA I REALLY love the set.. one of the biggest gotchas I found out was EA has a weakness to Psi and Toxic I made a few small Sacrifices and built my range defense up..nearly to soft cap actually and this helped a lot. Might not be the prescribed way.. but I found it made her quite sturdy.

Edit: There are times In ITrials that I need to pack along a few oranges for just in case but those times are not often.

A lot of what you might find on the forums are old posts about EA.. but in its current state it is an extremely hardy set. For me anyway I found it so good that I have a Staff/EA Brute, DB/EA Scrapper and TW/EA Brute!

Wow, it's not the way I would do it, but I commend you on going that extra mile. Something to keep in mind is that some Psi attacks have NO positional flags on them, so you'll still be open to them. Still, nice solution, even if I wouldn't recommend it.

To the OP, at this point, I wouldn't advise making any Defense set builds. With the coming changes to IOs, I think it would be best to at least wait for a Mids update before doing anything. Chances are you could make yourself a Soft-cap to S/L/E/N/F/C build with moderate resists to stack on top of it. If you can pull that off, you'll be very sturdy indeed.

Heck, even *just* the soft-cap is very good. And some of the mitigation you get from Staff/ will make that even better.

Kill 'em all. Let XP sort 'em out.

Pfft. Why go for the normal softcap when you can hit the incarnate softcap.

Specifically, this is incarnate softcapped to smash/lethal/energy without energy drain, and everything except psi with it. Because if it's worth doing, it's worth overdoing.

You rebel scum!

Sounds like some good solid numbers (can't look at it at work). I wonder what that would look like on the beta server with the new IO adjustments.

It's actually not much difference, you get some fire/cold resist from the three kinetic combat sets, some extra smash/lethal resist from the doctored wounds, and the aegis 2 piece bonuses become all move speed rather than just run.

Realistically, though, you're still going to be better building for defense. Mostly because resistance only mitigates damage, and only of that type. Defense on the other hand also mitigates secondary effects like debuffs by virtue of the attack not hitting you to begin with. And also mitigates other damage types to some extent depending on the attack. Consider the energy melee some of the IDF guys use, just as an example. If you have resistance to smashing and lethal, you'll take less smashing damage but still take full energy damage, unless you also have energy resistance. While with defense, over time you effectively reduce both damage types by the attacks not hitting you at all. Admittedly that makes more of a difference on a straight resistance set like fiery aura than it does here, but still something to be aware of.

You're welcome. Least someone will get some use out of it since I shelved my own staff character. Set's too slow for me, even if it is pretty. Truly, the dual pistols of melee sets.
