New Player, RP related question

Hi guys! I'm super new to the game and MMOs in general--just started to play the game a few days ago--and I'm still trying to get my bearings and figure out my most comfortable play style and the like. Although I haven't really played MMOs very much in the past, I've played in several freeform RPs on different forums as well as a little bit of tabletop RPing, so I thought that maybe jumping into Virtue would be a good way to help get involved with the community and get my feet wet in the game.

After thinking about it, though, I realized that I don't know all of the lore of the game, so it might be hard to RP in the game until I know the setting better (unless I come up with some explanation for why I/the character doesn't know anything about the setting itself, like "they're from another dimension" or something). I already have created both a hero and a villain character, so I could just play all the way through level 50 on both of them to understand the world better before jumping into RP...but that's a pretty big commitment, so I thought I'd better ask first.

So yeah, should I play through the entire game before trying to do something as complicated as jumping into RP?

(Also, any good suggestions for resources for new players? I already checked out the idiot's guide to RP and the LiveJournal link, but I'm worried I might've missed something I should've read.)

ParagonWiki.com, only resource you need. You can also read up on a lot of the lore there.

Avoid the Wikia site, it's outdated, to say the least.

Welcome to the game BrightBlueInk. I hope you find a home here and feel comfortable amongst the RP community. I'm a Union roleplayer myself but I do dip my toes into Virtue every now and then.

My first tip would be to read some of the entries on the main site here:

http://na.cityofheroes.com/en/game_i..._of_heroes.php

I would suggest reading the entries under:

Signature Heroes and Villains
Know Your Adversary
Geography
History
Story

As a good start. It doesn't cover everything but then that's ok. Paragon Wiki will fill in the gaps where you need them.

I'll also point out Zortel's still excellent primer for roleplaying in CoX, linked here:

http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=164362

Not sure if that's the one you mentioned but it still holds up several years after it was written. A lot of roleplay lore (separate to canon) is held in the Virtueverse and Unionverse Wikis:

http://www.virtueverse.net/wiki/Main_Page
http://union.virtueverse.net/wiki/Main_Page

I will also add this tip: If you're not sure where you are and what you're doing, create a character who is a genuine noob. Maybe they're young, maybe they just arrived here from another country or another dimension. It can help you learn the lore IC if you like, it certainly worked for me.

And finally, don't be afraid to ask questions. Most roleplayers in CoX are friendly, approachable and glad to see another roleplayer around. Send them a tell (type /tell Character Name, [Your message here]) and I'm sure they'll be happy to help. Or bring them to the forum where are legions of lore junkies will be only too happy to assist.

I hope that helps a bit.

Wow guys, thanks so much! That helps a TON. I'd seen both the ParagonWiki and the Wikia and I wasn't sure which one was being used the most, so it's really helpful to know about that. And I somehow completely missed all the articles on the main site and that one RP guide that Dante linked to. I've got a lot of reading to do. This will help SO much, thank you both!
