Quote:Isn't that all video games in general these days? Console, PC, Steam, Origin, something else entirely--almost all games these days collect information about how you play a game. I bet the CoH devs have all sorts of data about what archetypes/powers are used the most, how long people play, where they go, what they do, what gender they are and what gendered characters they make, etc.So they all track everything you do every second you're connected to Steam too?
Wow.
And honestly I don't really care that they collect info like that, because it means that they have a better idea of how the playerbase actually plays a game and can make updates to fit that well. And it seems way better to collect data like that rather than just get a small percentage of the playerbase's opinions, like you would through surveys or polling the forums or something.
tl;dr: Steam might collect data, but it's all related to how people play games. It bothers me far less than Facebook shopping out my more personal info, and it also leads to a (possible) benefit for me as well--if more people play games like I do, I'll see more games catered to my personal experiences. -
Saw this with my Dad. I actually wasn't very impressed with it--the action scenes were hard to follow, I didn't like any of the characters (with the exception of maybe the vampire-slaying mentor) enough to much care for them or what was happening to them and the movie took itself too seriously to really be campy fun. There was a lot of good ideas in the movie, they just felt like they weren't implemented all that well.
Actually, in terms of "weird mashups that just might work" movies, I thought Cowboys and Aliens was far, far better. (Which is especially shocking since the comic that movie was based on is really bad.)
That being said, the movie DID make me interested in reading the book, so it's got that going for it. -
@Captain-Electric: I quite like Steam, but I can understand why some people would have such a strong reaction to it. It's not perfect, but it's currently (as far as I can tell--new to PC gaming in general) one of the biggest forces in the PC market, so if you don't like it you have to put up with people talking a lot about it and a lot of other companies rushing off to make Steam clones.
That being said, I do think it'd be nice if my friends could see me playing and enjoying the game so they'd be motivated to come along with me! But I guess I'll just have to do word of mouth the old fashioned way, haha.
@AzureSkyCiel: Wow, thanks! I didn't think anyone would recognize my avatar at all! Nice to see another Lackadaisy fan. -
I honestly wouldn't be surprised. The only reason I even decided to try out COH is I googled "games with good character customization," found an old thread from years ago saying CoH's character system was good, did some more googling and found out it was free to play and I had nothing to lose. Which is kind of odd because, despite (until now, I guess?) never really being an MMO player, I know that both WoW and ToR are FTP up to a certain level right now, and I could also probably list off at least half a dozen freemium Korean MMOs off the top of my head, mostly due to ads I've seen on a bunch of websites.

Wow guys, thanks so much! That helps a TON. I'd seen both the ParagonWiki and the Wikia and I wasn't sure which one was being used the most, so it's really helpful to know about that. And I somehow completely missed all the articles on the main site and that one RP guide that Dante linked to. I've got a lot of reading to do. This will help SO much, thank you both!

Hi guys! I'm super new to the game and MMOs in general--just started to play the game a few days ago--and I'm still trying to get my bearings and figure out my most comfortable play style and the like. Although I haven't really played MMOs very much in the past, I've played in several freeform RPs on different forums as well as a little bit of tabletop RPing, so I thought that maybe jumping into Virtue would be a good way to help get involved with the community and get my feet wet in the game.
After thinking about it, though, I realized that I don't know all of the lore of the game, so it might be hard to RP in the game until I know the setting better (unless I come up with some explanation for why I/the character doesn't know anything about the setting itself, like "they're from another dimension" or something). I already have created both a hero and a villain character, so I could just play all the way through level 50 on both of them to understand the world better before jumping into RP...but that's a pretty big commitment, so I thought I'd better ask first.
So yeah, should I play through the entire game before trying to do something as complicated as jumping into RP?
(Also, any good suggestions for resources for new players? I already checked out the idiot's guide to RP and the LiveJournal link, but I'm worried I might've missed something I should've read.) -
I think this is a really awesome idea. I can definitely see myself using the logos in new areas, particularly on the belts!
