I did the pahtping thing in command prompt as per the instructions and this is all it came up with. (some redactions for my privacy)

Had to do it this way because it was getting ridiculous trying to cram all those buttons (or equivalent text) into the measily sig space.

I think you're simply overloading the graphics card at your current settings.
Probably not the SOLE reason though.
The summer event can be flaky at times. Even I've been dumped from time to time.
The fact that you're running your card out on the ragged edge of it's performance envelope probably isn't helping though when you come across flaky areas where stronger cards might not hitch and die.
Please note the highlighted areas in the quote above.

To be honest, for a while before the summer event I had the game settings to advanced ultra mode and had some things turned up a bit and it ran perfectly fine. Shortly after the event started I was getting some graphics lag, especially in Atlas Park 1 with all the players there, so I turned off advanced ultra and just used the slider for ultra mode.
You pointed out some things but didn't offer any suggestions or clarify much, and what you highlighted is a bit confusing and vague. I'm not that computer literate.
And....apparently I'm not the only one having problems with crashes lately.

Edit: My graphics card is a 512MB.
Edit 2: Forgot to mention, my graphics card is using the default nVida settings. Last month I clicked help in the nVidia control panel to have it check for updates and received an error. So I went to the nVidia website and found there were updated drivers. I uninstalled the control panel and drivers and did a clean install resetting the settings to default with the new updated software/drivers in June. I also just did a check and no new drivers yet.
What hyperstrike is saying is, lower these settings.
It doesn't matter how much memory is on the GT240 some evil marketing people have them stick 2Gbs of RAM on them, its still going to be a slow card.
Edit: Until a person posts CoH helper, I don't really pay much attention to the post.

Sorry. I sometimes get so carried away with my snarkiness I don't always remember to give full advice. Beat my face in about that later.
Thing is, your settings are up too high for that card.
If you want to keep it at 16x9, I'd recommend turning Ambient Occlusion OFF. COMPLETELY.
See what that does for you first. If that doesn't help, try reducing FSAA and Anisotropic Filtering down to 2x. THAT should give your card some breathing room when graphical *blips* in the game whack your framerates down. If it doesn't completely smooth over performance issues, it should at least reduce something that, previously, would have been crash-worthy to something that just lags you for a second.

Edit: You do have a valid point. But I wasn't posting how much vram my graphics card has to say it's the best or more than good enough to run the game on high settings. I posted it in case it was relevant and to get advice on what settings I could turn down in the game for better performance, in case there was someone more technically knowledgeable and knows about these kinds of things.
I'm kinda a dunce when it comes to these sort of things.

I didn't change the settings yesterday but the game seemed to run pretty smoothly, even in AP1 with lots of players around. Maybe the weekly maintenance had fixed it. But, I will try out your suggestions to see if that can avoid future problems. It's just weird how I didn't have any problems at all until that June 29 patch.
Thanks for the help and I'll post again if I have more questions.
Note: You WILL notice that the game tends to get choppier right after big patches. Some of this is possibly due to how clients and the servers cache game assets.
That and file fragmentation may have something to do with it as well.
If you're running on a system with a hard drive and 3rd party defrag software, you can:
- Patch.
- Start the game up.
- Do the file checks.
- Log into the game.
- Sign off.
- Defrag the PIGG directory and any fragmented files in the CoH root directory.
My main machine is on an SSD RAID. So I don't need to defrag.
My laptop, I usually have it defrag right after an update with the method described above.
I DID post the CoH Helper info as per Hyperstrike's suggestion.

You were refering to another post, but that post didn't have any CoH helper. Therefore, who knows what the issue was.

Please try to be more specific when responding to me in the future. My poor little brain can't handle the confusion.
As per Hyperstrike's suggestions, I turned off ambient occlusion, FSAA and Anisotropic Filtering down to 2x. Then I defragged my hard drive and ran disk cleanup.
The stupid game just crashed on me AGAIN. This is the 5th time since the June 29 patch.
I had a freespec on my Arachnos Soldier from the 8th anniversary in May and used the /respec command. I clicked finish and chose yes that I was sure and the game went *poof*. When I logged back in the respec had gone through though.
At this point I highly doubt it is a graphics issue because, as I stated earlier, everything worked perfectly fine with what I had the settings at until the June 29 patch.
I don't know what else I can do aside from uninstalling and reinstalling the NC Soft launcher and CoH and I don't want to spend 2 hours doing that.

If you were crashing *every* time you booted up, or regularly when you did specific things (like the mapserv in the Tyrant personal mission).
There could be a stray memory leak being caused by some screwy conjuction of issues between your hardware, the game, and the OS. Reinstalling, likely, wouldn't fix this.
It COULD be a driver timeout. But the latest version of the nVidia driver actually notifies you of this and takes you to the MS KB article on the issue.
And please don't forget you're running Windows here. While it's MUCH better than it used to be, please understand that "Windows" and "stability" or "uptime" aren't generally related concepts.
I have random crashing in the game from time to time. You're never going to fix it 100%. Ever.
This is one of those 10GB of RAM HP machines. I've seen a few posts about them having issues.
If you want to try and narrow it down monkeyslap, you *may* have to resort to more drastic measures to fix this.
We are going to need more info, so its time for twenty questions...
I would start with cheap and easy first.
How hot is your machine getting? HWmonitor or core temp might give us some answers to this.
I checked on the HP website, you added in the GT240 card, who made the card? The card is often made with cheap parts in order to be profitable but knowing who made it and exactly which card can be helpful. How old is it? It would not be too surprising that the video card is failing.
Do you have a friend who can loan/help/assist with a spare graphics card?
Lets start with easy stuff first, reformatting hard drives is the nuclear option when everything else doesn't yield any answers.

Note. Five random crashes in a 9 day period, while annoying as hell is NOT excessive.

Also FXAA in both global and program settings was set to Off and I don't plan on changing that. I may just turn it off completely in the game settings though.
And please don't forget you're running Windows here. While it's MUCH better than it used to be, please understand that "Windows" and "stability" or "uptime" aren't generally related concepts.

I have random crashing in the game from time to time. You're never going to fix it 100%. Ever.

P.S. Hey I figured out how to multi-quote.
Edit: well at least how to separate your post so I can respond to each individual thing you said. lol
My computer came with on-board ATI 256MB graphics. My mom gave me the video card from her old system after she bought me my current system because she bought a small E-Machine that the GT240 won't fit in (micro ATX I think). She bought the video card on Newegg about a year ago and our computers about a month after. So it isn't THAT old.
Friends? I don't get out much. I'm not really a sociable person in public.
And I said I would uninstall and reinstall CoH and the NC Soft launcher as a last resort, not my whole OS. Are you crazy?
Note: info you requested will be in next post. The forums keep giving me an error about "too many characters, try removing some or shortening your post".
I used Core Temp about a year ago on my laptop. But when they came out with an updated version, something broke and 1 of the functions didn't work right anymore. I emailed them about it and they told me to do some weird steps in Windows to get it working again. I replied back and told them the older version worked fine and still worked fine and they got rude and said to do what they suggested or don't use the program at all. I don't use it anymore.
I did get the WD Monitor and in I clicked 'File>Save monitoring data' and it created a text file to save. But for some reason the forums is giving me an error when trying to post it saying there are too many characters like '<>--;" and to remove some or shorten the post.
But I do have a screen shot.

You can always click on the image in my sig too. It has a master link back to my website. You can follow the links back to the board from there or view the same guides on the site.
Had to do it this way because it was getting ridiculous trying to cram all those buttons (or equivalent text) into the measily sig space. |
Happened again. I went to respec another character and I click the 'Yes' button on the warning to do a final conformation and finish the respec and it crashed AGAIN.
At this point I highly doubt it is my graphics card. And I don't think it's the drivers because I installed the latest version June 11, and I didn't start having problems until the most recent game patch on June 29.
The game has crashed on me a total of 4 times now since the June 29 patch that fixed the teleport problem in the summer event trial.
1 time I went to claim an inspiration from character email that was from super packs and right when I clicked 'claim' it crashed.
Another time I was in the summer event and was the Grifter in the heist and right when I clicked on Silvia Rexem (not sure the exact spelling) her dialogue window started to appear where I could make the first choice to 'flirt' with her, but the window didn't have any text and hadn't finished loading because the game crashed on me. This really sucked because I only needed the Perfect Grifter badge on that character and chose that role to make sure I got it. I was able to rejoin the event but my team was in the hideout with almost the 20 goons defeated and I chose my role again and then entered right when the Silvia Rexem AV spawned. So I had to do the event AGAIN to get the badge.
The most recent crash was right before posting this. I decided to call it a day and log out for the night. I was at the character select screen and clicked the back button to go to the server list. Right when I clicked the 'go back to log in screen' button the game crashed on me.
The other 1 time it crashed I don't remember what I was doing.
After the second or third time the game crashed on me, I ran a repair(consistency check) in the NC Soft launcher on the game hoping to prevent future crashes, but to no avail apparently.
Edited for a few typos.
