SS/INV, Switched from a Tanker

Hey all: So, I have a lvl 41 Inv/SS tank that I love dearly, but she's been semi-retired for a few years and is running with SOs only. She's nigh-unkillable, but can't swat a fly with the amount of speed I'd like, so I thought I'd switch up and make a Brute instead. The Brute is currently level 19, and I thought I'd throw together a quick build to be eviscerated by folks more knowledgeable than I.

I realize the RES/DEF numbers will be lower on a Brute, but is this too low? I went for recovery, psi resist, and some extra recharge as I lack Hasten. Did I miss anything? Obviously, this isn't a purpled-out build as I'm not huge on funding.

Go with Kinetic Combats for ST melee. Then get Brute Archetype enhancement 3 in FS. You can get 5 percent S/L def for each set of 3. You want to build your S/L def up. You get the biggest back for you buck from S/L def. Then focus on Nrg/Neg def or recharge depending on what you like.

Mr. Cipher is right. Building for s/l first, with e/n being a second priority is normally the way to go. Rectified reticle in focused accuracy, the brute ATE set split evenly in two is a great way to get it. I made a similar to yours in power choice and slotted how I personally would do it. This is just how I would go about it, but just as an example.

It has all the same powers, with the exception of focused accuracy.

For general tanking, you'll be "okay". Not "great", but "okay".

My standard advice for building for psi defense/resist on an Inv.

SCREW THE PSI HOLE!

Build for S/L/E/N (and if you can, F/C) defenses. A byproduct of building this way is you'll boost your Ranged and AoE defenses FAR beyond what you could reasonably get your Psi defense to.

Optimal slotting for Auto/Passive resists (Resist Physical Damage, Resist Elements, Resist Energies): 3 Aegis

  • Resist
  • Resist/End
  • Resist/Rech
Optimal slotting for toggle resists (Temp Invulnerability, Unyielding, Tough): 4 Reactive Armor
  • Resist
  • Resist/End
  • Resist/Rech
  • Resist/End/Rech
Moreover, slotting this way will ACTIVELY reduce the amount of endurance your build "eats" when at rest. This translates into a longer attack chain before your character runs out of juice.

Working back.

In trying to build for recharge AND plugging the psi hole, you've kinda compromised your build.

You don't need Focused Accuracy. Properly slotted Rage will be up perma, with a good chunk of Double Rage overlap. Even without Hasten. Suggest converting FA to Hasten.

Physical Perfection is GROTESQUELY overslotted. It's a good spot for procs and the like, but beyond that, you're better off slotting in Superior Conditioning, Health and Stamina.

A better use of your AoEs (Foot Stomp and Spring Attack) would be to frankenslot.

3 Obliterations

  • Damage/Rech (or the Proc for occasional bouts of Energy Damage Goodness)
  • Acc/Dam/Rech
  • Acc/Dam/End/Rech
And either 3 Cleaving Blows or a frankenslot of:
  • Multi Strike: Acc/Dam/End
  • Multi Sttrike: Dam/End/Rech
  • Eradication: Acc/Dam/End/Rech
If you have access to ATIOs, three slots of the Brute ATIO in each are kinda nice too.

From a set bonus standpoint, the 3 CBs are better since they improve your Recovery AND give you an additional nifty E/N bonus.

Boxing should only be used if absolutely necessary.

Take Taunt. LOVE Taunt! No, you're not a Tank. You do more damage. Thus, enemies get scared of you faster and run the hell away!

Dull Pain is overslotted. And if you're going to slot it, 5 slots of Doctored Wounds is more optimal, since you get a recharge bonus out of it.

As noted earlier, your resists are sub-optimally slotted.

For comparison, here's a similar brute I'm running right now:

And if I felt I could live without Laserbeam Eyes, I'd pick up Maneuvers and rebuild this way:

Alrighty, here's what I came up with last night, using your tisandtricks, pluskeeping myown flavor (she *is* a Supergirl/Powergirl/Ms. Marvel tribute, after all, have to keep Hurl and LBE).

Also, how do people manage to use Rage *and* Hasten when only one power can be auto-cast? It boggles the mind.

Supergirl/Powergirl?

Why yes, I have a kryptonian themed build handy. Has Cryonic to simulate the frost breath, lbe, and afterburner to fly at supersonic speeds.

For my Captain Marvel/Wonderman toon, I went Peacebringer.

So...apart from the purples (and the LOTGs, which are about as expensive), this is *very* interesting! I like the addition of the Cryo Judgement.

As for me, though...I just can't see using this build without Taunt, and slotting Brawl over Boxing just seems silly to me, though I might be wrong; the 4-slotted brawl still does less damage than unslotted Boxing...is it worth it that Brawl is free (endurance-wise)?

Also, I just now noticed that ALL of those enhancements are +5...that's WAAAAAAAAAY out of my price range. Oh well...perma Hasten, DP and perma double Rage sounded good, anyway.

That be what is called a "mule". It gets deleted from the bar and never used.

I understand what a mule is...but it just seems to me that brawl doing half the damage of Boxing with the same slotting doesn't make sense, even if Brawl is endurance-free.

Since neither will ever be used for any reason, which you pick to slot is not relevant at all.

But brawl is faster. Meaning you can use it as a Fury-builder.

See, that's a constructive answer. Brawl, slotted, and used as a Fury-builder makes sense, and saying so doesn't make you come off like a condescending derpbag. Thanks!

I'm sorry if my post came off as condescending. That tone was in no way intended.

I've been called many things, but this is the first time "derpbag" was used. I guess that's interesting.
