New Video Driver

Ok guys, so my laptop doesn't play COH worth a nickel. My desktop plays it better and it's a much weaker machine. The desktop is a P4, 2 gigs ram, 256 nvidia geforce card. Much weaker. So I'm thinking that it is the video driver on my laptop that is causing the issue. Here is the COH help file, maybe you guys can help me locate the newest driver.

Btw, I did search google, and it appears the I have the newest driver according to my searches, but some of you video gurus may have a nice site that contains different drivers than the standard sites.

Only one I found at nVidia's site is a beta (179.48 Beta) that's older than the version you have. That was for a Geforce 7150M. There are newer ones for the desktop version but not the same thing. As strange as it sounds did you try Windows Update and see if Microsoft has newer drivers?

However the Geforce 7150M is an extremely weak integrated GPU so it doesn't surprise me that the game's performance is poor even at those settings.

Low free space.

Fairly old, entry-level mobile video solution.

So yeah, not surprised that a desktop system of a lower "apparent" spec is kicking it.

Updating the drivers, if possible, MIGHT help. The problem is, there IS no newer driver.
The latest offered from nVidia is 179.48.
You're on 195.81 (which is probably the default nVidia driver that Microsoft shipped with Win7).

At this point, you're kinda stuck boss.

I was afraid of that. Got this laptop years ago for $475, special edition media laptop etc. Shoulda researched it better but I saw the duo core and 4 gigs of ram and got pulled in.

So, what do you guys think about maybe running coh in linux on this thing?

My d: is hp recovery drive.

My c: drive is quite full, but the partition COH Helper didn't pick up, that partition is 60% free and running ubuntu.

If games ran better and faster under linux, Microsoft would have been out of business years ago.

Hyperstrike answered your question already. You can't squeeze anymore performance out of it. Laptops are not good for gaming and those that are good for it, cost big bucks.

Bottom 4: (Peacebringer) way below everything else, Mastermind, Dominator, Blaster

I'm guessing that your Linux install is at the beginning of the drive? Is there any chance that having the Windows side of things closer to the end of the platter is causing the issue? My thinking an increase in seek times, etc.

I'm running an older Intel version of that line with 3Gb usable RAM and a 256Mb GeForce Go 7600 with no probs and I'm on even older drivers. I'd check your temps, etc and see where you're going from there. BTW, within the driver settings and even within the windows power management settings there are options that will intentionally reduce the performance of your machine while it's under load. You might look into setting everything for Maximum Performance (as opposed to Power Saving) and see how it goes. Just remember that you're obviously sacrificing battery life.

Perhaps you could elaborate on what exactly you're feeling is inferior experience wise.

Bumping over to Linux, if there's enough free space, might help. Right now his Windows partition is just too full, and NTFS gets all sorts of pissy once you start limiting free space below 15-20% (and usually falls off a cliff at 10%).

But it's not likely to be that much of a performance bump. The machine is just too old and low-end.

I'm afraid Hyper is probably right. The laptop may just be to old. Really is a shame to since I'm not quite ready to buy a new one so I was hoping to continue using the hard ware I had.

Heat may be an issue, it does get very hot when playing a movie or game.

What I'm experiencing is this, intense, I guess video lag. If I push e to turn, and hold E until I start turning (usually takes 1 or two seconds) then the toon does a 90 degree turn instead of just turning right. FPS is very abysmal, what you might expect from an old school hami raid in terms of FPS.

When I run the game in safe mode though, responsiveness shoots up to normal, which is what keeps bringing me back to it being a driver issue.

I'm not sure if you've ever wandered the HP forums, but you'll note a few things about these laptops. Firstly, I'd check and see if your laptop was part of that battery recall. Second, there are known thermal issues with the nVidia chips that are so promenant that I've had three repairs done across three machines as well as there actually being a service offered on ebay JUST for this issue. I run the GPU Meter gadget and with just the browser open I see it settle around 54C. If I'm ingame it'll hike up past 60C and I've seen it go Over 80C during trials. Needless to say I'm not playing much until I get the last bit of money for my desktop build.

Yeah Aries, I knew this particular model had issues. I always saw it described as a fatal flaw that would cause the laptop to just die. With my renewed interest in using the laptop until it dies, I wanted to be able to do everything I can do on my desktop, ie coh. Since I've started researching into this, seems the connection between the fatal flaw and the gpu has been confirmed from what I read. Also from what I read, people are using pennies as heat syncs ( linky )on the gpu which I am going to try, although that is going to be a moot point since the laptop apparently doesn't have the spine to run the game anyway. Maybe I can make it last a few more years and turn it into a dedicated minecraft machine

I thank you guys for the information and if you have any ideas I'm more than open to listen as I would like to play coh on the laptop while I watch movies etc.
