Best way to use 400+ reward merits on a retired toon?

well 400 merits is enough to get almost any ATO you wanted if you didnt want to buy one on the auction house
I ended up with nearly 1k in merits from buying super packs chasing the Elemental Order costume bits. I'm slowly converting them to Hero/Villain merits via characters parked at Ft Trident/The Crucible.
Not a fast turnaround, but I expect to reap a mighty payoff when I finally do cash them in.

Convert to hero/villain merits, get converters. Buy pvp io recipes cheap, craft, convert to pricier ones, sell.

I was about to just do some random reward rolls to clear out my reward merits on a toon I just don't play anymore; no need to waste them. However, the game system has changed a lot and I want to make sure there is not a better option...
You thoughts?
