Server differences?

I'm wondering if different servers have different styles of play associated them. Basically, is there a stereotype of each server that could be used to differentiate them from other servers? Is there a right or wrong way to pick a server as a new player?

RP server? I've seen 2 servers now, and have yet to see anyone that plays in character. Everything is out of character communication.

PVP server? Is there a server more oriented towards heroes vs villains, or is everything just PvE?

Are there GM's who run events on some servers, or is everything just preprogrammed events?

Community, mostly.

Events tend to be spread across servers. When Exalted (the VIP) server was new, there was a bit more concentration there, but with things like the Nemesis invasion, they server hop.

RP server - All servers have RP to some extent. Best to check down in the server forums, even if you can't post there yet. Virtue is generally considered "the RP server," but it's not enforced. Union, I believe, was the European RP server. Check pocket D.

PVP... another "there are events here and there." I'd say if you want PVP, go to Freedom, just from the population. On the other hand, Pinnacle and Victory (IIRC) both have some PVP activity - just not in the zones, typically. Takes some looking to find.

I play and RP on both Union and Virtue and there isn't a lot of 'open world' RP. As Bill said, PD is a good place to try but a lot of RP co-ordination happens through channels. For Union, the place to go is Union Roleplayers. Not sure about Virtue though, there seem to be a number of channels that could help. These may be restricted though depending on if you're a Free player or a Subscriber (VIP).

All servers I've ever started on tend to be very friendly and helpful. That's one of the great things about this game's community.

Virtue has a fair amount of RP, as well as a large population. Although, like stated above, it's still not extremely common and you have to seek it out yourself. There should be a few global channels or Supergroups formed for just a thing. If RP really interests you then I would recommend hoping onto Virtue, and trying to find a good RP Supergroup and global channels.

Just the other day I (unknowingly, was an invite from a friend) joined an "RP AE" group. They were doing each other's AE missions, reading the clues, and RPing it all along the way.. There was more Rping going on than playing. It drove me absolutely bonkers (not much of an RPer myself) so I politely stepped out after about an hour. Although I was glad to see them doing it and enjoying themselves.

If you play a villain, I recommend a more populated server, such as freedom or virtue. As for play styles, most servers except freedom and exalted, prefer to clear mission maps of mobs. This is ok for most missions, where you can join and quit as you please. However, for task forces, which can take up to 2-3 hours to clear mobs, the leader cant invite after he starts. So if you quit, he cant replace you. If you are a casual player and only have a couple hours to play, go to freedom or exalted since these servers tend to have more speed runs than other servers. Example, a speed lady grey taskforce takes 25-30 mins while a kill all lady grey takes 2.5-3 hrs.
Most servers have players who partipate as mentors. See the mentor project link in the forum page of a server. The server's forum page also has event announcements and a calendar link.

The irony of the mentor project is that mentor channels can't be accessed by free players who are coming in and checking out the game. Until you spend money on the game, you can't be mentored through the system that has been set up.

Fortunately, I found a few people who were helpful in the help channel to educate me on a number of things. I'm sure I'll have many more noob questions though.

I consider it a non-speed lady grey if you tp penny instead of letting her die :P
Anything else sounds like torture.

The "Mentor" Project was created in March 2010 (waaay before CoH: Freedom and free players) as a player-led initiative to help new players.

At that time, every player was a paying customer and everyone had access to all the Global Channels, so everyone could access the Project's Global Channel ("N P C").

Since CoH: Freedom, the "official" help channel is, well, the Help Channel.

That part seems to be working then. The mentor project thread might need some updating though. I was trying to get into mentor channels my first couple days before flooding the help channels with all my newbie questions.
