Sadly I'm not sure the Devs ever got around to changing it. To save time they probably could have even used the natural eyes they created for the lion pet so the modification to the panther should have been fairly trivial to accomplish.
Oh well...

If the moderators/OCR team get quite a few notices of several posts being reported in a thread it tends to get their attention to the entire thread more than just the single posts.
If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.
