Please Critique My Crab!

Greetings! I am currently leveling up to 50 on my Crab and I thoroughly enjoy him. I have come up with a build that i will work on gathering IO's once i am relatively sure of it. I play ranged to melee - guerilla style, venom grenade, suppression, then the ST attacks. If it's still chasing me then arm lash; frenzy if surrounded (right after another venom grenade). I use omega (followed quickly by venom grenade) for large mobs or opening a boss fight and look forward to school of sharks & bile spray.

A few questions though: Is my recharge sufficient? Serum and spiderlings should be perma or nearly so. Is there a better place for the last slot in Omega; it is there so i have the distance not to aggro the foes before the bomb goes off. Are my defense/resist values high enough? Any weak spots you see or suggestions you make will be greatly appreciated.

OK, made some changes.

Perma pets, better attack chain, perma hasten, better res, better slotting all around, more power in frenzy and arm lash.

This will keep you going until the next set of ATOs.

Well, this is my interpretation of it. The one major thing that is lacking is Leviathan Mastery. I'm sorry, I just can't advise anyone to make their otherwise-cool Crab Spider run around vomiting and shooting fish at people.
Instead, I recommend taking Maneuvers and Assault from the Leadership pool. Giving yourself, your pets, and your teammates an extra 5.4% global defense means that you don't have to gimp any of your attacks by slotting them with Shield Breaker. Similarly, the extra 15% damage that yourself, your whole team and your pets gain from Assault makes your cool Crab Spider attacks so damaging that you don't need any uncool fish powers.

I removed Longfang and replaced it with Frag Grenade. Why have a single target attack when you can have another AoE? Channelgun is really the only fast filler attack you need.

In general, I tried to keep the use of purples to a minimum, although higher levels of performance could certainly be achieved if you have an extra billion burning a hole in your pocket. I also didn't include any enhancement boosters.

If you really want Call Reinforcements to be genuinely "permanent" you can swipe a slot from Health and give it a Recharge IO.

Thank you for those interpretations of my build, Trilby and Two Dollar Bill. I see in each you surpassed my defense to the three positions, capping and/or supassing the cap. You also bettered my recharge significantly (and damage levels as well).

The pools that i will not use (for appearance, boredom, or just distaste) are the Mu and Soul Mastery sets. I am curious to know though, would i do better to go with the Mace Patron instead of Leviathan? I have yet to pick from the Patron pool and wonder if Shatter Armor will increase my potential for damage.

I have been working from the one guide on tanking a SoA and many, many posts from fellow spiders. I want to be able to make a boss think twice and not be easily stopped by the masses but instead leave them lying crumpled on the ground. I see the damage and recharge you have presented to me and it's potential for devastion.

Think of me as an light tank durable but prefering to strike hard and move on, but if surrounded i will make them pay...dearly. So if you have any other thoughts, please let me know. For now, i must go to work. When i return i will play around with these builds and see what looks good for me and my playstyle (or if adjusting my playstyle might allow me some flexibility). Thanks again!

Which tanking crab guide? :O My old one? Cause I'm working on a better version.

Dropping the 2 levithan powers for assualt/manuevers is better because of getting a damage bonus agaisnt one or two targets, the whole team benefits on any target, however I tried to keep them in for you because you wanted them :P

As for a tanking crab, my post recent post in my thread has my future build in it, when the new ATO hits that makes me (already pretty strong) into very pretty, very strong! :P

You can make a perfectly good Crab without an epic power pool. The one I posted above doesn't have one, and I see Trilby's current and future builds don't either. My own Crab uses Mace Mastery, largely for Shatter Armor. AoE attacks may be a Crab's stock and trade, but when fighting an elite boss, archvillain, giant monster, etc. spamming it with Suppression just doesn't cut it; I want that single-target smackdown.

In terms of general advice.... As long as your Crab has soft-capped positional defenses and ~50% smashing/lethal resistance, you can pretty-much choose what sort of combat you prefer, and do it well. I do recommend always taking advantage of Leadership toggles since Soldiers get very favorable numbers from all the pool powers, as well as having their own superior versions. Being able to off-tank is nice, but being able to add 20% defense and 30% damage to a whole team is huge.

[QUOTE=Two_Dollar_Bill;4237272].

I removed Longfang and replaced it with Frag Grenade. Why have a single target attack when you can have another AoE?

Personally, I hate Frag Grenade, because of the knockback that it does. Nothing sucks worse than using it to help kill off Adds, only to be yelled at, because you made the tank lose aggro, because you knocked their target back. A good solo power...if you don't mind chasing down what you knocked back from yourself. But on a team? You'll tick off the tank because now they have to chase down their target again and retaunt.

I too went with Mace Mastery, mainly for theme though. I took Web Envelope (nice immob), Shatter Armor (nice melee "you got too close now I have to smack you in the face" power), and Summon Blaster (6 spiders running around is fun). Summon Blaster, is perma in the build that I run currently.

Did you choose Leviathan for theme? I could see if you were like a SpiderCat toon, where puking up fish and throwing fish would be rather amusing.

My Crab's primary build is very melee-oriented and does a lot of its damage with Frenzy. It doesn't have Frag Grenade, because the knockback hurts my DPS by preventing mobs from gathing in melee. I was ranting about the evils of crowd control in another Crab thread yesterday. So, I do understand your point about knockback.

However, I also have a second build on my Crab that concentrates on ranged combat and pets, and doesn't use Frenzy as the basis of its DPS. That build has Frag Grenade and I like it. I just don't spam it around the fire Tank who's trying to herd.

Also note, neither of my builds uses Longfang. I'd rather have a situational but powerful AoE attack than a redundant second filler attack.

Greetings! Heh, hehehe, no not quite a vomiting spidercat. I chose Leviathan because it was a toxic, ranged cone often used to follow up venom grenade (because of the 40% -res to toxic)...at least in some of the posts i read. Mace would also be acceptable; besides, i've never had any Leviathan powers higher than School of Sharks and that was on a tank i was respeccing to strip. It looked amusing enough but i've never seen Bile Spray or Artic Breath in action. I didn't realize they were serious on the method of delivery. Last thing i need is a power that causes me to be mistaken for a Vahzilok.

I am considering the Frag Grenade but in originally had it and the WAWG. I found it to be situational because of the kb. WAWG is a lie and usually only hit one or two for me, so at least one foe went flying.

A friend gave me his idea on a modified version of your suggested build, Two Dollar Bill. He wanted me to run it by you.

One of my concerns is that i am often premium and therefore can Not rely on my Alpha to boost me. Frankly that status depends on how often my boss needs me (3 days a week atm). So i need to see if i can make that work, even in a boss battle or an ambush (both are good occasions for that frag grenade...hmm) or maybe an extended battle. I intend to start grabbing accolades and of course inspirations (and dayjobs that grant larger inspirations). Any suggestions with that in mind? I picked up the Panacea proc yesterday (i am lvl eight vet rewards so IO's are goood), and i have 3 of the PVP -res IO's for whatever that's worth.

Try this, works with the next set of ATOs, 3% over softcap to all, good single target, good tanking, all sorts

Well, Frag Grenade IS situational if you don't want to be scattering your foes. But if that's a bad thing, you're going to get a similar effect from the ATO fear proc and the Rognarok knockdown proc. If you only have one annoying knockback power, you can simply choose not to use it when it's inappropriate. If all your ranged attacks cause these sorts of effects, it will be harder not to interfere with the team's tank. My own Crab uses the ATO proc in a melee attack, since I'm okay with them cowering in fear after they're already in melee range, and I don't use the Ragnarok proc at all. I'd rather gather them all up for efficient disposal.

- Tactics can be useful, especially for your pets, but I would not give up a global 15% damage boost for it. It's not going to make yourself or your team hit 15% more often. Also, Leadership pool toggles cost 0.39 end/second and I would not run one without any end cost reduction.
- The cost of slotting your pets with the +Def and +Res uniques is that these do not improve the pets' basic stats... accuracy, damage, recharge. If you are six-slotting the pets you can have respectable stats and still find room for a unique or two. If you've only got three slots that contribute stats, the pets will be weaker. It's a tradeoff, but I perfer to get the 6.25% global recharge and the best enhancement values possible with the fewest number of slots.
- Range/Damage Hami-O or Range IO in Suppression? The Centriole Exposure does contribute damage but since the power is already experiencing the full effects of Enhancement Diversification, the huge majority of that damage is lost. Meanwhile, the plain old Range IO gives you greater range than the Centriole. In a cone attack, range IS damage if it means you catch extra targets. Give that range IO some enhancement boosters and that becomes one big cone!

Ultimately, none of these factors makes or breaks a build. Finding the perfect build is a matter of endless fine-tuning and respecs, and when you finally get it perfect, your build will probably look quite different from my perfect build.

Crab Spiders don't require any Incarnate powers to fill in skills they're lacking. You can have soft-capped defenses, 50% S/L resists, a self-heal, status protection, pets, and lots of attacks for any playstyle, all without incarnate powers. This should not be a problem.
The Panacea proc and the Gladiator's Armor +3% Defense are both worth picking up if you have the dough. I'm not sure the Shield Wall +3% Resist is really in the same category of usefulness, though I am using one on my Crab.

Greetings and thank you, Two Dollar Bill, Trilby and Nightfire9 for your observations and sample builds! My experience so far with the ATO proc is that the foes stand cowering...and don't run while i use Suppression to finish them off.

In referring to the Alpha (or for that matter, Destiny) i was specifically referring to the endurance use/recovery. On a team, with all the leadership toggles running, and all the tools of the Crab soldier the battle won't likely last long. My concern was more when soloing, but the comments you have made - and actually getting to play my character - have shown me that playstyle may have that covered. That and taking out the sappers and Mu's first and with extreme prejudice.

I was going to ask if skipping Spiderlings in favor of other powers was a decent idea but i can see that it is a matter of preference and playstyle.

SO true! And so i thank you all, especially Two Dollar Bill and Trilby for your insights and reminders that i need to play it to see HOW i want to play it! I will likely post the build i choose after running it by one or both of you first, but next on my list is gathering accolades, XP... and just playing him. I will refer to this post again once i am lvl 50. Thanks again!

The reasons for Leviathan are;

1. Arctic Breath, which with enough recharge gives another roughly perma AoE -15% resist on top of the -20% from Venom Grenade. A total of -35% is on the order of what debuffing defenders provide, only none of their -resist debuffs do serious AoE damage on top of the debuff. As a note, AVs/GMs don't have their "special" resistances to -resist debuffing.

2. Bile Spray, toxic damage, if used as a followup to both of the above its seeing a total of -65% resistance to its damage, thanks to the doubling of Venom Grenade -resist vs. toxic.

Downside to Leviathan is, as others have commented, the whole "vomiting/breathing" attacks look doesn't work for everyone. Plus you need a predecessor for the above two attacks, though taking the AoE Immob isn't a terrible thing if you are a ranged crab.

Grab Assault before Artic, I see it as a -15% res debuff that applies to everything your team fights. Which is up all the time.
