The Weirdest Thing

Hi Guys,

Here is my problem. When playing the game, every 3 minutes or so my game will briefly pause and flash to a previous screen of a zone or some other area that I was in previously. The whole process only takes about 1 second(just enough time to screw up an attack lol) I lowered my settings to "recommended" eventhough my FPS was sitting around 50-60 on ultra. Now it is around 70-80. I have no pronblems in other games like skyrim which I thought would be more demanding.

I also thought aybe it was because I play wirelessly on my laptop but even wiring up to my router I still have the same problem. I hope I am giving you all the required info to be helpful.

Thank you for any help you can give. If you need a better description of the problem I will try but not sure how else to explain it.

50-60 FPS with ultra mode on with old Intel Integrated Graphics? What the crap?

Does the system actually have optimus or something? No way Core 2-era Intel graphics could get that performance.

Edit: whoops, misread, that's a SB Core i7... still, the HD3000 doesn't get that sort of performance, or anywhere near it. I see some references to 'nvidia', so it must actually have optimus, and CoH Helper is just missing it.

You see reading my speca above I see the intel. Now that must be the problem. I have optimus. Is it not using the nvida card? I went into the nvida control panel and made COH use the higher end card awhile ago so what else am I missing?

Ok So the game is definately using my NVIDIA card. Could it be because it is overclocked? Even though it has been for over a year and this is the only game it happens on. Mind you its the only online game I play.

The Intel shows up since the nVidia chipset is only being used while the game is being played. The rest of the time it is using the Intel graphics. Since you aren't running the game while you are running CoH Helper, it can only report on the active card.

One of the reasons I dislike this setup on newer systems. My laptop does the same with the ATI chipset.

It does keep us from seeing the driver and chipset information on the nVidia chip.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

Ok techie I am not. But when I get home I will run the game,go out to windows, and then run coh helper. Will that work?

Posted

Isn't there a way to tell the system to not use the intel GPU long enough to rerun the test?

Posted

Ok trying to run helper while the game is running did not work. Anyway, the card is gt 550m(yes I'm kicking myself for not upgrading to the 555m, and even that one is middle of the road. Mine is overclocked to 760 and the game runs great minus the above listed issue. I ran netgraph and it was mostly all green with the occasional quick red spike. Fps was anywhere between 55 and 105. Did a memory test and it passed.

Any ideas?

Try shutting off the overclocking.

There have been some of the overclocking utilities that caused issues with the game, but most of those issue were of the "game won't start" variety or "stuck at load screen" variety.

It would eliminate the overclocking from being part of the problem.

Also, go into Device manager and look at the properties for the video card driver. It will give a version number and a date. Let us know what those are and it will let us know what drivers are installed.

Ok so I have driver 296.10 from March 13. I downclocked it back...still have the issue though.
I will keep trying whatever you suggest.

Sorry to bring this thread to the top but I am stumped. Any thing I search on here or in Google doesn't match with what my problem is. Is my description good enough? Does anyone have or heard of a similar problem?

Posted

Okay so I am writing here more for informational purposes because my problem seems to be solved and wanted to share in case it helps someone else. There were beta drivers available from April 4th I believe so I excitedly downloaded them aaannnd............still had my problem.

But I was playing around with my screen resolution and for some reason the recommendation was 1920x1080. I always had it at 1600x900 as it was easier on my old eyes. The game also was on 1600x900.

So I put both at 1920x1080 and voila!!!! No more weird flashback to previous screens.

Not sure why but thought it would be interesting to share.

Regards

That probably means your monitor's native resolution is 1920x1080. Modern flat screens really don't like being forced into other resolutions and doing so can result in some quirky behavior.

Posted

Interesting, and here I thought a lower res would yield better gameplay but not only is the problem gone but the fps stayed the same.

Posted

Since you had Vertical Sync (vsync) enabled, your FPS would be capped at your monitors refresh rate (60/second). I'm sure your system is being taxed more by running at a higher resolution, but, not enough to drop you below the cap noticably more often.

Ok so I ran evga while playing and gpu temps are in the 72-75 range. I am reading mixed thoughts on this. Some say that's way too high and others say that's average for that card and laptop. Is that ok? Settings are on "recommended"....prior to the res change they were that temp as well.

Also am I breaking a forum rule by asking a seperate question in my thread?

Nothing in the forum rules about asking a question related to what has already been said in the thread.

Since the thread was having recent conversations about the graphics chipset already it seems quite relevant to ask about the temps here rather than start a new thread and have to link to this one or repost a lot of what was in the thread.

So what are your thoughts on those temps then ?

My thoughts?

It may not agree with everyone else's thoughts.

My personal opinion is that laptops run very hot anyway so those temps are likely OK as long as those are the temps you are seeing under load, like while the game is running. CoH puts a load on systems anyway and is a good stress test for systems.

I'd start to worry about it if those were the temps during normal computer use (browsing the web, creating documents or spreadsheets, watching a video, etc). Especially since the game is going to put a load on the graphics chipset and CPU. That would be what I'd consider the high end for normal computer usage (ie, non-gaming).

If those are gaming temps, I wouldn't worry until it got around 85 or higher and I'd only run that for a short time.

If you are going to be running an extended game session on the laptop (over an hour) I'd recommend tabbing out at times to check the temps or keeping the temp monitor on top of the game if you can keep it out of where you need to see most of the time.

Frankly, I don't use my laptop for any extended gaming session mostly due to temperatures and less cooling capabilities. Most of my laptop gaming is short sessions.

Others may have differing opinions on the temps. I couldn't find any specs on what the 550M or 555M are rated at for temps (not sure which you have, but those are the two that came up for that model number).

I'd agree with these.

To help the system out, you could use /maxfps 30 to cap the FPS at 30, which should help relieve some strain, without making a humanly perceptible difference. I also generally set /maxinactivefps 3 (or a similar <10 number) and alt-out occasionally, putting the game in the background for a few seconds (such as to read the forums ) and then be able to still keep an eye on what's going on, while there's much less load on the system.

You system seems fairly new, so this might not be an issue yet... but laptops often build up lots of dust inside, which makes cooler harder. You could get a can of compressed air and take off the bottom panel, then lightly blow the compressed air in through the exhaust vent (note: do this OUTSIDE unless you want a face & room full of dust!).

Still, those temperatures aren't too bad. They're high, but, all things considered, that's generally to be expected on laptops under heavy load.
