Plant/Thorn dom vs. Spines/ Scrapper

I love my plant/thorn dom, however it has occurred to me that a spines scrapper would offer a bit more damage (i will run quills, but more concerned with general attacks).

Is it possible to get a plant/thorn dom up to scrapper level spines damage with IOs and Incarnate stuff or shall I carry on with leveling up my Spines/Regen scrapper?

Thorns/Spines is a top attack favorite for me and I want to feel powerful come 50 with my scrapper. It is worth it?

Thank you in advance for your time and input.

Spines is an amazing AOE damage set, but lacks in ST. I can't really see a Dom being better at ST though but that's fairly filed as conjecture... I think that Plant is a great Dom set for control and damage but I don't see Plant/Thorns competing on the same level as a Spines/Anything Scrapper.

I personally recommend /Fire, not Regen. Unless you want to PVP. If damage is your main goal, a Spines/Fire Scrapper will burst out AOE that I don't think it's reasonably possible to consider a Plant/Thorn competing with it.. But Confusion damage is pretty hard to judge.

I'm not sure how dom Thorn and scrapper Spines compare, but I might suggest a Spines/ stalker. The new AS change gives Spines a single-target burst and sustained dmg that is awesome.

Wow, thanks for the prompt reply.

I have 3 /fire brutes and the one thing I am looking for is damage along with survival. I want to do end game content without faceplanting to get through it.

P.S. I love /fire but I think burn on a scrapper would annoy the heck out of me with all the running to and fro. Any other suggestions for a secondary (dark is not an option for me).

The last stalker I played was my energy/regen before the change to ET. I havent looked into playing a stalker since, however I have been reading up on the changes and players really seem content with them. I might give this a try too.

No personal experience at that level (endgame stuff) but keep in mind the slow effects in Spines ... they might run but not fast enough with the way Burn's damage is currently front loaded, particularly if you can get some slow enhancement in there (either with IO enhancements and/or Alpha slot boost). Least it seems that way for my friends Spines/Regen where I can visibly see, as a teammate, the slow effect occurring.

You just aren't building /FA right. I can understand budget being an issue, so you could have a point if that's what is stopping you from building a durable /FA character.. But with enough inf. and enough cleverness it is very possible to build a 32.5% defense to all positions or softcapped s/l (45%) FA character without gimping any aspects of the build whatsoever and retaining decent global recharge.

Edit:

Made this just for you, OP (and potentially for my currently benched Spines/FA, to be used... Someday.)

32.5% defense to all positions... AND Shadow Meld w/ 50% uptime

Hasten 1s from perma

No gimpage

End won't be sustainable without Ageless +recovery, but it's an end game build for a reason.

Turn accolades and Incarnates on.

Woohoo! Thank you! I will load this in mids as soon as I can.

You're right, I havent built a sturdy /fire AT to date, I shall look this over and give it a go.

Thanks again

Or maybe he just doesn't want to roll another /Fiery Aura character?

That said, I dunno.../thorns isn't the highest powered assault set but it's pretty decent and what it loses in -rech and -movement, it gains in -def (in the realm of +15% defense debuffs...Thorn Burst and Ripper have -30% defense in it!) Yeah, you might need it, but all those foes with 50% chance to hit you need a better chance of killing each other after you toss out Seeds of Confusion.

I honestly wouldn't know if Scrapper Spines would be better than Dom Thorns but for AoE, one would consider both their options, huh?

For Scrapper AoE:
-Can't use Shield Charge but Spring Attack is an option.
-Lightning Field, Death Shroud, Blazing Aura and Burn from Secondaries.
-Energy Torrent
-Torrent, Tenebrous Tentacles
-Exploding Shuriken
-Fire Ball
-Disruptor Blast
-Ball Lightning

For Dom AoE:
-Anything from your primary so AoE immobilizes, pets
-Also got Spring Attack as an option
-Bile Spray
-Disruptor Blast
-Ball Lightning
-Dark Obiteration, Dark Consumption, Soul Drain (!)
-Fire Ball, Rain of Fire
-Sleet, Ice Storm
-Energy Torrent, Explosive Blast
-Psionic Tornado, World of Confusion

IMO, I think Scrapper will kill the few foes closest faster, but a Dom will kill more foes at once due to larger AoE options along with pets and debuffs. If you want a damage aura to match the Scrapper, World of Confusion.

For secondaries, I'd say it's honestly up to you. Dark is great, Electric is nice, if you want to try Ice you have to go Stalker (the only AT thus far with the Spines/Ice combo). I'd bet Stone Armor would be a good choice too if you simply want indestructability. I'm a fan of Invulnerability, it's hard to take down but probably better on a Tanker or Brute (which don't have Spines) so you can aim to cap smashing/lethal.

But my honest suggestion: Plant/Thorns. You won't be disappointed. You'll be soloing mission team spawns in the teens. It only gets better when you get Carrion Creepers, pets to add damage for you, epic pool attacks, alpha slot for recharge (possibly perma-domination), judgement, interface proccing with pets, creepers, epic AoEs, any survival from Lore, Destiny, Hybrid...the sum of it all will outpace a Scrapper, in my humble opinion.

1. There should be laws against that.

2. See his last post. He doesn't seem to mind.

On my current personal Spines/FA build, I go Weapons Mastery for the nice slow stacks from Caltrops. The running away is a pretty big problem for Scrappers, speaking from experience- Maybe in the level up process (the perspective you seem to be speaking from) it isn't as much of an issue, but when you have a god-mode Spines/FA it's pretty freaking hard to stop things (read: x8 spawns in their entirely) from running away before you finish slaughtering them in my experience. Caltrops is a nice band aid, but what would help more than anything is PORTING SPINES TO BRUTES! Yahhr! This I currently want more than anything else in COH.

I actually prefer /Thorns more than Spines/. Spines is VERY painful to level due to the lack of decent ST...unless you roll a stalker.

Both are super stupid powerful. I would roll both to be honest. Thorns is like heaven for Proc people! I love throwing the AH proc and the Neg Lady Gray proc in there for good measure on my Dominator and throwing as many procs as I can into Thorntrops. I think /thorns flows better than Spines but both are sexy!

Thank you all for your constructive feedback!

I have a 50 Plant/Thorns dom that I absolutely adore. Some of the best memories I have playing CoV is with this particular AT.

With that said, I want moar damage! Damage and survivability. Like I mentioned earlier, I love the thorn/spines sets and I'm not so worried about the difficulty of awkward levels, but I would like something to invest IOs and Incarnates into and a toon that can solo Dark Astoria (this is content that I haven't tried yet).

Can Spines/FA survive DA without being a +4? The whole idea with this zone is to help with incarnate XP no?

I'm not sure of your Plant/Thorn build, but I can think of one thing that might bring a Plant/Thorns Dom on par with a spines scrapper as far as damage is concerned. Leo_G mentioned it, but it got included in the general list of AoEs and really needs it's own catagory. This is Sleet from the Ice EPP. Sleet is a huge boost that is available to Doms, and not scrappers or brutes. Once you add Sleet + Ice storm to the AoEs available to a Plant/Thorns Dom I expect the Dom will solo kill groups just as quickly as a scrapper. Plus be more beneficial to a team thanks to the -res in sleet benefiting the whole team.

I'm not saying that scrappers are bad. Scrappers and Brutes are very fun and effective ATs. However if your just looking for better damage numbers, a Spines/Fire scrapper might be a little bit better, but ultimately the difference will be very minor.
