Information Gathering for future Ultra-mode capable PC
Oh, and mouse/keyboard. Well, whatever you're comfortable with. I used to use corded mice at work and home, but started to have symptoms of repetitive stress injury (i.e. like carpal tunnel syndrome, except that's generally from keyboard mis-use). So I got a trackball at work and a cordless mouse at home. That has me using different motions at home and at work. Both are Logitech.
My keyboard is also Logitech and is corded. The main concern with 'non-gaming' keyboards is 'chording' - i.e. pressing multiple buttons simultaneously. Due to how they are wired internally, some keyboards can't read multiple keypresses correctly. I had to replace the keyboard I had when I started playing CoH as it would not let me superjump AND move forward AND turn all at the same time. My current keyboard handles that fine. Any keyboard marketed for 'gaming' should also be fine. Mine isn't a gaming keyboard. It's a very basic Logitech keyboard that cost me about $14. As far as I'm concerned, it's perfect. Once I saw how much I liked it, I bought another so I have a spare.

Does anybody know how many fan headers these have? It's really hard to find out unless someone's done a youtube review vid, but honestly I haven't looked there yet so...
EDIT: Fixed link |
Missed this in my initial reply.
If you hit Newegg, they should provide a link back to the product's page on the parent company's website.
Most of them have a PDF version of the motherboard manual available. And most of those have a board layout in them describing fan header locations.
QCSR boards look nearly indistinguishable from Socket 2011 boards. They have 4 DIMM slots and that's it.

And why not just buy 2 sticks of 8GB memory? Then you can chunk in another 16GB later on without replacement. |
My setup:
Logitech G510 keyboard. 18 3-function macro buttons? Hellz yes? Please? Microsoft Optical Mouse. While I use the macro buttons on my keyboard, I DON'T fiddle with umpty-zillion buttons on a mouse. Too easy to accidentally press one. But to each his own. |
er... enough? I have never given a single thought to how many fan headers a mobo had for any of my builds. If you're going to start adding extra fans, you'll probably be plugging them directly into the power supply.

The reason I got an aftermarket cooler is that I *AM* working the CPU hard. It runs at 100% utilization on all cores, 24/7. |

Yeah yeah, I'm sure I'll be getting an I told you so, but it seems my Thermaltake Case (had I the money to build right now) could have been a bust as there seem to be production issues with the case fans. Their forum server must be overloaded atm because it takes forever to get somewhere and over an hour's worth of registration attempts have failed (it seems). Atleast the main page's support email works in a timely manner as they advised me that the fans are on backorder. Japan (for example) really needs to stop getting all these disasters so we enthusiasts can get our toys. ;-)

WTF are you doing to that poor thing to run it constantly? :-p

They have both a mouse with a built-in trackball, plus a stationary trackball with a larger ball. I have the stationary one.

While I definitely agree with that, I was also trying to avoid the whole 6'-10' of usb extension cording. Tis not safe for Aries' eyes to be 2'-4' away from a 40" TV w/ 120Hz refresh. ;-)
|
Actually it's safer than doing it on a monitor with 60Hz refresh.
And at 4' you might be a BIT close, but it shouldn't have you going gonzo with your peripheral vision. I'm at about 2' with my 24".
With a 40" monitor, sitting at 4' should give you roughly the same viewing angle I have without eye strain.
I'm running 8 instances of SETI@home. It's an application from UC Berkeley that lets people assist in SETI research by having their computers analyze radiotelescope data when they would otherwise be idle.

Grr...after losing my primary laptop last month to GPU fix-failure my backup laptop's right hinge has broken (again). I guess this build's been pushed up. Too bad I shredded that latest Citibank offer for 0%/12mo CC. >.<
