Help me choose... ??? / regen, for fun not min/max

I've never played a /regen scrapper, I'm going to finally roll one up and I was looking for ideas of a good primary synergy wise.

I'm thinking I will more focus on Single targets...I've been running the brutes with AOE's to death, and my only 50 scrappers are a Spines/dark AOE monster. I'm not going to skip any AOE's mind you...or purposely gimp myself and I will be eventually IO'ing up and running Incarnate with this guy hopefully.

So, help me out...

(more info... NO PVP, NO farming, I'll probably PL myself until late 20's/32ish. I know how to play lower levels, I'm not going to hurt any teams by PLing to 30, but I like to get the toys a little quicker nowadays)

Oh...and what are the biggest hurdles in the life of a /regen?

Thanks for all the help!

I think anything will be good with /regen but if redraw bugs you then obviously none of the weapon sets, regen = very clicky. If you want ST, i'd say StJ. Especially if you're PL to 32, its a good set but crushing uppercut couldn't come quicker.

DM also works pretty good with regen, never tried them together myself but i've heard it works well.

Really i don't think you can go wrong if you're not trying to min/max or anything in specific. My first 50 was BS/regen, was fairly smooth from 1-50 but that was some time ago, really the only thing that will hurt /regen would be -rech. Maybe -regen as well and if any fights last to long and none of your clickies are back up.

Dark Melee/Regen has nice symmetry. The -ToHit on just about everything gives your high +regen time to make up for any dmg, and Siphon Life, when franken-slotted, adds even more HPS without breaking your attack chain. DM is VERY ST-focused, so it will do exactly what you want.

With /Regen, Recharge is key. Slot for it like crazy, get Perma-Dull Pain and Perma-hasten. At higher levels, get some +Def, and you'll be very happy. Don't worry about slotting for +regen or +recovery, you'll end up with tons of both without really trying.

The Soul Patron Pool works well with this combo (Dark Blast, Shadow Meld), along with Rebirth Destiny.

If you decide to go this route, post here or PM me, I have lots of other little tips and tricks. I LOVE my DM/Regen - he's been my main for a very long time.

Katana/Regen. What Regen wants is mitigation. Katana provides. But yes, you have to be able to stomach redraw. It doesn't bother me personally.

The biggest hurdle with Regen is learning too play it. It's a school of hard knocks. It's also very, very rewarding when you get it right.

And I agree with everything Xyzor said.

Titan weapons/Regen would be good too...TW loves end and Regen has tons to give...

Oh and I hear claws isn't bad with Regen either, since I played one to 50 and was my main for a long time.

Really? I wasn't going to slot for +rec, but i thought with regen you always wanted more...?

See I have alot to learn.

I think I like the DM/regen. I've played claws a bunch, and not ready for TW yet.

All my builds lately are very heavy on the +rech, can never get enough...

Xyzor, I'll definitely need some more tips on my build, once I get going.

Its funny I've played many powersets, and can tell you most builds off the top of my head...and how well they play in what.../regen I have no clue...that and anything to do with stalkers or SOA. Not my style...

More regeneration is, of course, better than less regeneration. But almost anything else is going to contribute more to your overall survivability. Think of it as diminishing returns, if you wish. Or consider that survivability is, very roughly, your damage mitigation * regeneration. You're already swimming in regeneration, but you have very little mitigation. Adding more mitigation will have a much greater payoff. As for recharge, that's both healing AND mitigation since you'll have click powers that do both. And of course recharge is also important for your DPS. So you get huge benefit out of recharge.

I have a Claws/Regen build I'm working on that's pretty sick.

Highlights:

Perma-Dull Pain.
700%+ passive regen.
Softcapped to S/L.
And it has enough recharge to run Follow Up>Slash>Focus>Slash>Repeat as its attack chain, which, while it isn't quite the best chain you can run, is pretty good.

It involves the scrapper ATO set, and lots of boosted enhancements. Oh, and tier 4 Spiritual, which I'm only one very rare component away from.

If I think about it when I get home I'll share the build. It should translate pretty well on the Regen side of things at least.

Edit: Also, Welcome Back Werner!

One thing to keep in mind with regen is that you'll be clicking regen powers more than you'd be clicking in any other set. So it can get in the way of sets that you want to be able to chain your attacks together quickly. This would be most noticeable on dual blades, titan weapons, and street justice, since all reward you in some way for using attacks rapidly and not interspersing other powers with your attacks.

As someone else already mentioned, if redraw bugs you, you might not like any of the weapon sets either.

Personally, I didn't like it, due to the lack of AoE, but DM/Regen is a great combo. DM is fantastic ST damage, and the to-hit debuffs, and the heal in siphon life add survivability to regen.

Dark Melee has the -ToHit, as others have mentioned.

Electric has knockdown and end drain.

Katana/Broadsword have DA/Parry.

Titan Weapons has Defensive Sweep.

Staff Fighting (when it comes) will be able to buff you in various ways.

Street Justice has some stuns and knockdown.

Really, any of those should work. If you were min/maxing the list would narrow slightly but you aren't. I'd actually suggest holding off for Staff if you can play something else for awhile. It seems like it will pair nicely with Regen.

This!

We have a winner!, I didn't even think of that...but how much fun will that be! I won't even PL at all because it will be all new, and fun. I can wait....now I have something exciting to wait for!

Thanks for the help everyone I really appreciate it!

I am excited for Staff as well. I am fighting the urge to pair it with Regen only because I play Regen all the time. I think I am going staff/ea, just for something different and because Regen is very clicky. Staff has a lot of nice fast attacks that I would rather be clicking, but the combo should still be great fun, enjoy!!!

For ***** and giggles, here is my current DM/Regen Build. It's expensive, but who cares...

The highlights, if you don't care to look over the whole build:
Perma-Hasten and DP
750% regen
230% Recovery
33.8% S/L Def and 31.6% S/L Resist
170+% Recharge
953,000% Own Face/Sexy

I see folks mention TW/Regen fairly often. Other than having QR to fuel TW, I would have thought TW's animations would be a bit dodgy with Regen's sometimes need to click something in a hurry. Does that become more of a non-issue once you get your momentum rolling? (I haven't built a TW character yet, despite having picked it up when it came out. Too many alts!)

As you build momentum, TW gets faster and has lots of mitigation in the form of knockdown. So, knock them down, heal, knock them down, heal, redraw isn't much of an issue, and normally for me it is not in general unless the draw animation is over done. But TW will also have Defensive sweep helping you get melee/smashing defense similar to DA/Parry in Kat/BS.

I was thinking the same thing. I have a TW/Fire at 50 and I die sometime because I can't hit my heal because of the animations. It happen at early levels more often but it still happens at level 50 to. You do build momentum better at 50 but you can't keep it up all the time, at least I never have. It will drop and you can get stuck in an animations when you need a heal and easily die, I have died many of times this way and I'm just /fire.

I would stay away from TW/Regen but that is just me.

How much defense does your /Fire have? Softcapping a TW/?? character is possible thanks to Defensive Sweep. A TW/Regen with softcapped defense (to melee) would rarely be hit. Another thing is Regen has plenty of alpha strike eaters, especially if you take Shadow Meld. Then you can do things like MoG then jump in, or Shadow Meld then jump in, or you could even take Spring Attack and jump in with that. With all the knockdown from TW/ it shouldn't be much of a problem to heal during battle after the alpha strike. Not that much of that would help with your /Fire. But that's why TW/Regen works.

Not exactly.

Defensive Sweep adds Melee/Smashing defense.

That leaves you with no defense to Ranged/Lethal attacks. Machine guns are ranged/lethal. And they debuff defense. Regen has 0% defense debuff resistance

So, since you aren't avoiding those machine gun attacks, your defense is going to get debuffed in a hurry, including that melee defense.

And there are a LOT of machine guns in the game, particularly among the Council and 5th Column. They tend to stand back and shoot you quite a bit before closing to melee range.

Defensive Sweep isn't as useful to Regen as you think.

No but if you slot it right, you can get your Ranged/AoE defense in your powers through bonuses and tack on a few defense powers from the pools, and a set or 2 of melee damage adding defense bonuses to melee and I would bet you could get close. If you took shadowmeld and MoG you would also literally have 45 seconds of softcapping if you needed it/were short with only a 12-15 second break before it was up again. During that last shadowmeld hit IH and DP should be permanent already...you should be fine and if you get into trouble use rebirth then hit build momentum and get after it knocking them all down again.

I haven't actually studied what's possible with Titan Weapons, so I can't comment intelligently there.

But you could softcap a Katana/Regen to all positions, and incarnate softcap most of the time by juggling Moment of Glory, Shadow Meld and Barrier. They can also serve as your "defense debuff resistance" by interrupting cascading defense failure. That said, I believe that something more like 35% ranged/AoE with Rebirth and more recharge is even better, but you *could* go the defensive route.

Wait, I can't stop talking about min/max even when I shouldn't be. Sorry! Off topic!

The combo of Shadow Meld/MoG along with IH/Rebirth is flat out awesome. You can always have at least 1, and often 2 huge dmg mitigation (either avoidance or mega-regen) abilities working at once. Because of the animation time, I prefer to lead-in with Shadow Meld, then pop MoG afterwards if my judgement isn't up. If I'm getting hit a lot for some reason, Rebirth/IH during the Gap, as Planet_J said. And there is always Reconstruction for when things are particularly tough (and, with DM, Siphon Life in your attack chain).

The set is very clicky, but you have so many survival tools, it is almost hard to get killed (End Drain and Complacency is about all that ever gets me nowadays).

I've never played TW, but I've played a couple SS toons, and I think the Knockdown would pair nicely with Regen for the most part. I also don't play weapon sets (other than Staff), so I also don't know how annoying redraw is, or how it would interfere with the clicky nature of Regen.
