Secondary for fire?

Always wanted a fire/ scrapper, it's just whenever i go to make one i get stuck on deciding a secondary. I tried fire/fire awhile back, the whole no taunt aura thing just killed it. Other than that i was thinking maybe /shield, /wp, /inv.

Anyone have any advice/experience with any fire/? scrappers? Seems like the set doesnt really mesh well with any certain secondary other than /fire and maybe/shield.

Any help is appreciated

I love my Fire/Shield. Moar damage!

This isn't anything special, but here's me farming some +3x8 Council so you can see how it plays when purpled out. This is with the alpha level shift, so they're really +2, but no other incarnate powers.

Anything that brings some additional aoe damage would be great with fire. Shield is a fine option, or one of the resist sets if you're leaning that way. Dechs has wooed many a poster to dark armor with his dark/fire tanker videos. Wouldn't be anything wrong with elec armor either.

I loves me some Dark Armor (my main is Katana/Dark), but it's a lot easier for a Tanker to soft cap one. On a Scrapper, you pretty much don't do that except with Katana or Broad Sword, and it's still a bit of an undertaking. For a Scrapper, it doesn't seem to me that Dark Armor brings a lot to Fire. Death Shroud is nice, but I doubt compares to Against All Odds and Shield Charge. And while you can't get 95% anymore, at least you get some defense debuff resistance with Shield. If you prefer resistance to defense, of course, you'll get a lot more of that out of Dark Armor. And if you simply like Dark Armor, as I do, what you like can trump what you believe is best on paper.

I suppose I should mention Super Reflexes. Fire/Super Reflexes was the budget combination for AV soloing back when that was a popular pasttime. I also consider Super Reflexes a good choice for incarnate content since it's fairly easy to hit the incarnate soft cap. I've not played that combination, nor have I played Super Reflexes against incarnate content, so take that with a grain of salt. And damage will be lacking comparatively.

Also, all combinations are good. I don't think it's possible to make a bad Scrapper. If something sounds like fun, just go for it.

Fire/Shield is a great combo, as is Fire/Fire. Heck, I've seen people who loved Fire/WP and Fire/SR as well. I suppose that Fire is great with anything then. :P

Don't I know you???

Thanks for all the replies. I have to say, fire/shield with the musculature alpha is sounding really nice. The only thing i think that would bother me would be my end. And how would it play on the ride to 50? Im really looking for a new toon that i can invest quite a bit of money in, and stay interested in long enough to go through all the new DA content but if it's a pain all the way until incarnate stuff and until the soft cap, im not sure thats the combo for me.

/wp feels like a nice fall back, love it on my stj/wp scrapper. But i can't help but feel that no mitigation from fire would make /wp feel pretty squishy, same for /inv.

I went with the cardiac alpha to manage endurance, but I suspect that with some tweaking, you could get it to work with musculature, and do a little more damage. Also, one problem with my toon is that it's a concept toon with ONLY sword melee attacks, and having perma Hasten with Fire Sword Circle in your "single target" chain is a good way to burn too much endurance. So yeah, I bet you could do musculature.

Honestly, the ride to 50 doesn't stick out in my mind. I guess it was neither painful nor transcendent. I think it was fun? I wasn't shooting for the end game as I recall, just leveling for fun, so it at least met some minimum standards. But I really love how it plays all purpled out. I haven't fiddled with defense debuffers since they fixed Hamios though, so I might love it less now. I'm sure it won't be bad, though, as the point of the build was massive damage output with sufficient survivability, not massive survivability with sufficient damage output. I have no heal, for instance.

Neither Willpower nor Invuln really need any help from the primary, even if like any secondary they benefit some. I suppose Invuln would love a heal, so it loves Dark Melee, but you can get the heal some other way, like Rebirth at the top end, and maybe Aid Self while leveling if you've feeling too squishy for the difficulty level you set. I think both would be fine with Fire.

Sorry for being every other post. I feel like I'm stomping all over. I just really like my toon.

I strongly suggest giving Fire/SR a serious look. This combo is an easy cheap AV killer, if you are into that sort of gameplay.

The development team and this community deserved better than this from NC Soft. Best wishes on your search.

Add a third vote for Fire/SR. To this day that remains my favorite character ever. He can pretty much do anything I can think of to try.

Have to be honest, i didn't even think about /sr lol. It's been awhile since i've had an sr scrapper, like pre-IOs. I have heard that it is fairly easy to soft cap. Is the end manegable(spelling, lol)? I'd be willing to use alpha slot to help with end issues but musculature just seems to good to pass up on a scrapper.

Think i've narrowed it down to /shield, /sr, and /wp, leaning towards /sr the more i think about it.

Thanks for all the replies and all the help, hopefully i can roll this toon and stick it out to 50, lol

I'd vote for Shield. +Dam, a good AoE attack and with Grant Cover teams will like you. Little harder to softcap than SR, but still more than doable.

Between SR, WP and Shield: SR and WP will have better low end and leveling up performance as well as a potentially cheaper high end. Fire/Shield on the other hand will be the unequivocal best of the 3 with a proper build.

I have a fire/shield scrapper. She's probably the most powerful of my characters. I've got her softcapped without the use of any purples, although my build doesn't achieve that until 50. It's a bit short on AOE at 47, and softcapped to melee at 40, however. I got around this by, uh...begging friends that could buff defense to come along (like Cold Domination users, empaths with Fort, VEATs, that sort of thing). She was perfectly playable without that, of course, I just got hooked on hacking my way through missions set for x8.

Now that she's 50 and has all the shinies, I use Agility Radial Paragon. The endmod bonus isn't too useful, but the boosts to recharge and defense are very handy, and I figured a bit of extra moving speed is more useful than a tiny bit of extra bonus for Stamina. Endurance can be an issue, which is why I took Ageless Core Epiphany for my Destiny power, which basically lets me push a button to refill my endurance, and by the time the recovery bonus wears off, oh hey, Ageless is back up!

I took Reactive for the obvious reasons and Phatoms because they fit, but those can be traded out.

Also, Werner, I have a question: are you softcapped? Because I looked at my own build, and almost all of my powers that can take purples needed other sets to squeeze out every bit of defense. She's not purpled because I just didn't have the room.

If you're using a glad armor proc it is quite easy to fit in a bunch of purple sets on a Shield.

It is quite easy to softcap. And yes, the end is manageable, even without using your alpha slot, though it can be a close thing. My fire/sr has the musculature alpha, and has sustainable end with perma-hasten running a chain of GFS-Incinerate-Cremate, but he had to take the body pool and physical perfection and conserve power to do it. However, he was built before incarnate stuff came out, so I didn't really have a choice.

I WAS softcapped, but after the Enzyme fix, I'm not any more. Yes, I'm using the Gladiator's Armor. It looks like I only have four purple sets instead of five, and went with Basilisk's Gaze in Char for a touch of defense and a saved slot while losing 2.5% recharge. Huh. Interesting. I took Assault instead of Maneuvers. More damage and didn't need the defense, I guess.

Anyway, the build needs fixing for the current issue, and was just a quick I19 respec of an older build, and keep in mind that it's a concept build (main restrictions: only sword attacks in melee, must have Hover/Fly), but here it is for what it's worth.

Fire/Shield is hands down THE BEST choice. I threw this build together in about 5 minutes. More or less Perma-Hasten, fully end-sustainable without any incarnate stuff, and can run musculature. It does HUGE single target, HUGE AoE, and is an all around beast. I know this because I'm running a build very similar to this one.
