I die way to often

As the thread title says, when I solo I die way to much. On a normal map filled with enemies normally considered easy (council, battle maiden's praetorians, etc.) I tend to hit the floor every 2-4 mobs.

Offcourse I've read Dechs' MF-ing bible, and I've got the "more bodies" mantra stuck in my head, but even with the 85% ress to all I get from Eclipse my green bar depletes faster than i can "arrest" the enemies around me.

I run at +0/x6 no bosses and a "normal" fight goes like this for me:
-Wait for eclipse to recharge (about 15 seconds from perma, but working on that)
-Run in with shadow cloak and SS activated
-Find a spot where i can hit at least 6 enemies with eclipse, and use eclipse
-Human Mire -> Dwarf Mire -> Nova Detonation -> Nova Emanation -> Dwarf Mire -> ND -> NE, etc. till there's only 1 or 2 luits standing
- Dwarf ST attacks to take care of the last few
- Stygian return/Dark Extraction.

What am I doing wrong? I really want to like this toon, but being unable to survive for any lenght of time solo just plain sucks.

Im not sure entirely what you're doing wrong... Your attack chain and tactics seem pretty up to par. So, instead of trying to figure out exactly what you're doing wrong (because I probably won't figure it out lol), I recommend taking a look at my Warshade video in my signature (click "Gaze into the Abyss"). It shows my WS taking on groups of +4x8 with bosses. Mind you, I have clarion (which could be easily substituted for break frees, but anyways...) and I use other incarnate powers, but other than that my tactics used in the video may help you.

Remember; the best idea is to keep the minions alive so they can fuel you while you annihilate the bosses/Lts. Fuel = power and survival. Whenever you notice your losing enough health to cause concern, gravity well a minion and then slurp up his delicious soul for endurance/healing. Stygian Circle is quite amazing. And fluffies! Don't forget your fluffies! Masterminds got nothin' on them! (OK... perhaps an exaggeration, but a good one at that :P )

Just watched, Diggaroo. At first I was like "Eh nothing too special" then you beat down a bunch of purple maltas. You are the nictus overlord.
So the MFing warshade guide is updated to i21, I take it?

You're a life saver. Maybe now I can enjoy my warshade even more. I love the i21 update on them but I'm having the same problem of dying too much to normal enemies. EBs/AVs, however, I completely decimate.

I don't see you using Gravitic Emanation or Gravity Well anywhere in there? If you leave the mob free to attack you, that might be the problem.

First, thank you for the compliment

You're destroying EBs/AVs... on your Warshade? Interesting. I have the worst time against those types. It's the smaller mobs I completely demolish. If you're having issues with the smaller mobs, do as Stone has suggested and keep them controlled. "Gravimetric Emanation is a ambulance" Dechs says. (And I concur!)

Quick question:

How do you have your Eclipse slotted? Are you monitoring your resistance levels when you hit it? It's possible that you don't have enough acc in the power, and therefore, it may not be hitting every target (and you may not be capping your resistance as a result)--which may explain why you're taking more damage than you can dish out... Just a thought.

The strategy you are employing doesn't seem bad...except for the dying part. There are a number of things I suggest...

1. While stunning is effective, killing (i.e. "arresting") your enemies is generally more effective. AIB's phaser is never set to "stun."

2. You may not be prioritizing your targets effectively (e.g. If you are targetting a Malta Boss while the Sapper is sucking you dry you may want to rethink that tactic...while you are facedown on the pavement...).

3. You may be using a build that is slotted in a way that hampers your overall efficiency. If you share it with others they may give you some beneficial feedback.

4. Perhaps your skill level has not yet developed. At least, not enough to accomplish what you are currently trying to do...remember...practice makes perfect.

5. Use more inspirations. They drop like candy, especially when you become a killing machine. "Use early and use often."

6. Read through the various guides and relevant posts to aquire as much info as you can.

7. If soloing is frustrating then team with others while you are in the process of working through the aforementioned items. In particular, team with someone who can show and tell you about the ins and outs of Shadehood.

That's because I've got no idea when to use them, I've got both Gravitic Emanation and Inky Aspect, but I feel that when I use GE I hit at most 1/3 of the mob, as for Inky Aspect, I've never seen it stun anyone...

I've watched Diggaroo's video, but to be honest, it doesn't make it much clearer to me. (Sorry Diggarro, still impressive performance )

I monitor my smashing resistance (but can be any resistance for that cause), and most of the time i see it hit 85% and turn blue.
As for slotting: 1 acc, 3 rech, 1 res.

1. See above
2. I've been avoiding Malta and mez heavy mobs like the plague. As for other mobs, i mostly target either the strongest or the one with the most harming effects first.
3. Will do when the game is back up. I am building towards this build by THB http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showp...6&postcount=11
4. I know for sure my skill is part of the problem, but even than i shouldn't be using Stygian Return more than I use Nova Detonation
...
7. As long as there's someone there in the team to take aggro I do very well, only when I get hit continuously I start to get in trouble.

Thnx for your advice all, I will keep sticking with my WS somewhat longer

Gravitic I use on mobs that have multiple bosses, or look like they will cause me trouble in general before the fight (before rushing in for eclipse/mire, usually). Otherwise, you can use it during a fight on specific enemy clusters that annoy you, just keep in mind your position and where they are likely to get pushed. What do you slot it with? I like to use Absolute Amazement on mine.

As for Gravity Well, I find my playstyle has three general uses for it. My first targets are troublesome enemies, such as sappers/debuffers. I lock those down, my life is easier.

Second, I use it after eclipse/mire on a fresh mob to kill a single minion, whom I then use for pet/corpse exploding purposes.

Third (and I imagine this is applicable to human form builds only due to shapeshifting animation length), DPS.

I took a look at that build, and I'm not exactly sure that would be the best build for you to use... That build is built specifically for Smashing and Lethal defense, and it depends on you having a Luck inspiration on you at all times to sofcap your defense--and even then, that build is only viable at level 50 content, so if you're leveling up your toon, that wouldn't be the best build to use while at lower levels.

On top of that, this build has sacrificed a lot of potential damage in order to build for those defense values, particularly with Dark Nova Bolt & Blast and even possibly Dwarf form.

Don't get me wrong, it's a viable build--just not one that I'd suggest for "everyone."

As you can see, it still needs quite some work, but my characters aren't what you would call rich...
If anyone could show me a tri-forming build that can do what i wanted to do (take out white x6 spawns (or higher ofc) with relative ease and actually finish a mission without dying) without delving into expensive purples and/or PVP-io's, you would have my eternal gratitude.

Well sure, if that's your current build, it's no wonder you're having issues soloing. It's nowhere near complete. I wouldn't solo with a building with half as many empty slots, myself.

I can look for one of my old triform shade builds if you still need it when I get home, it's relatively cheap, and it worked for me. It DID have an absolute amazement and two pieces of soulbound allegiance (two of what are considered the cheaper purple sets), however. Stupefy and some frankenslotting can do in a pinch, I guess.

I can probably scrape together enough inf for 5 pieces Absolute Amazement and 4 pieces of Soulbound allegiance. But I don't have enough inf to slot every 500M+ recipe out there...

Yeah I must have a reverse WS O_o. He tanks both AVs in Sutter with ease but normal enemies seem to wreck him. And ah, I'll have to play around with some things then.

(Biggest problem so far is the Inf for LOTG, Performance Shifter and Kinetic Combat)

Do you think this can survive 0/x6?

I think that build could handle 0/x6. That said, I promised you a build, so here we go. This is essentially how my build was slotted back in the day, with a few small changes to reflect your build choices. Note the blank spots in Unchain Essence--that is where I would put the kheld ATO set, since it has better recharge/endurance values than positron. And the global bonus, of course, would go in ebon eye. You'll be happy to see that I didn't include Absolute Amazement (but I left the Soulbound Allegiance since you used it in the last build). Hopefully this helps give you ideas.

Personally always been a fan of more, more stable recharge on a Warshade/Nictus build. The build I'm using, although still lacking the Purples, has been getting better and better at surviving as the recharge has gotten better. Ergo, I can only surmise that the recharge helps me fight

My personal preferred build;

What I'm wondering, why do you slot the nova ST attacks? Aren't the dwarf or human ST attacks better?

No, not really. I find the Nova attacks to be far more potent than the Dwarf ones, probably because the Nova damage scale is far better. Dwarf is good for mez shielding, dual-mire and brief res hits when Eclipse is down, but not for out and out damage.

Dwarf is good for pounding on a solid target (like an AV), but frankly most of your time you aren't doing that. For mob to mob killing, I find it easier to have at least one strong nova ST attack for hitting bosses with--the mob doesn't all die at the same time, after all, and it's a waste to use only AoEs on a near death enemy or go through the whole process of shifting forms (by which time the boss will be dead from the rest of your team).
