Newbie Stalker question - How do I lose enemies?
There are a few methods. Obviously, playing on a team with a Brute or Tanker will greatly reduce the odds of you getting picked on, since they'll be automatically taunting a good deal of the enemies you're fighting. All of the Stalker primaries have Placate in them, which is a reverse taunt. It makes an enemy unable to attack you, and the Stalker Placate will put you into Hidden status so that you can pull off a crit (provided you're not hit immediately afterwards). There are a few temp powers that also placate enemies, and a power in the /Ninjitsu secondary that does an aoe placate, but those don't put you into Hidden status, just prevent incoming attacks. The other option is, yeah, running away. Provided you don't stumble into a new group of enemies, the ones you've engaged should back off after a while. I'm sure there's a Paragon Wiki article somewhere that would give you the exact numbers of specific behaviors if you're interested in those.
With the i22 changes though, Stalkers are exceptionally potent in combat and running away or avoiding enemies isn't exactly a top priority. Even now in i21, you should have enough damage and survivability to handle most situations - if not, I'd consider adjusting your difficulty. Disengaging and making frequent use of a hidden Assassin's Strike isn't exactly an optimal playstyle.
My math indicates that having up Super Speed with a Stealth IO in it makes me effectively invisible to everyone but Snipers in times when I'm not "Hidden", but that doesn't shake the mobs I pick up from dropping a guy with Assassin Strike.

The only ways to lose aggro are to have someone else take it away, to run away so far the enemy resets, or to placate the foe(s). For the latter method, you can use Placate (in all Stalker primaries, placates a single foe and puts you into Hide so your next attack is a guaranteed crit), Smoke Flash (Ninjitsu secondary, PBAoE, does not hide you), or the Fortunata Hypnosis proc (slotted in a sleep power, adds a 33% chance to placate).
And I assume that on the odd mission with magic homing enemies, they cannot be stopped short of killing them. |
Also, Archvillains (including those downgraded to EBs) will see you through Hide once you enter perception range, after you've aggroed them the first time. If you die to one, head to the hospital, and come back to the mission, they'll aggro on you when you get close, before you start fighting again.

Orc&Pie No.53230 There is an orc, and somehow, he got a pie. And you are hungry.

Negaduck: I see you found the crumb. I knew you'd never notice the huge flag.

Thanks everyone for the help. Good to know that Hide really is the alpha and the omega of stealth, and I needn't bother with other kinds.
Android - I should have specified that this character is soloing only at this point. (He's a Praetorian on Defiant, not much other option.) I realize that strike and fade is not the optimum playstyle for a stalker, but A) at level 13 I seem to get annihilated whenever I'm fighting more than 2 opponents for more than 5 seconds, B) I kinda like the "strike and disappear" thing for style purposes, and was just wondering if it was at all possible, and C) as long as I'm the only one affected by my sacrificing efficacy to feel like a ninja, I don't feel bad about it.
Again, I appreciate the pointers from everyone.
Once you are added to a mob's aggro list, the only way to get off of it is to let them reset or placate them. Which when talking about AV's they for some reason do not reset. So if they kill you, you hosp and then come back into the mission, when you get within range, they will start attacking you again, even if you are hidden :/
Because aggro is in list form, even if some on on the team taunt's the mob, you are still actually in the aggro list, just on a lower rung than the taunter. If the taunter dies, and you are hidden, the mob will still know exactly where you are and attack you again.
Stealth only helps when you have not aggroed the mob yet. On a side note. In teams, when one person aggros a mob, the whole team is added to the aggro list. So if the mob is bigger than 16 enemies, and you follow the person into the mob, some of the mob will turn around and attack you, even if hidden.
So.... yeah this is why it is a hard life for stalkers and they required a buff to AS to help it be helpful outside of hidden... because most of the time you won't be hidden.
Your character does not have capped defense. Depending on your AT the cap is between 175% - 225%. Your defense is not teal in the combat window, it can go higher. STOP SAYING IT IS CAPPED! The correct term is Soft Cap.
I enjoy playing in Mids. I specialize in Melee Characters, other AT's usually bore me.
Fair enough. To that end, I'd recommend stocking up on small purples (Lucks) for missions. 4 of them at a time will give you a 5% chance to be hit, meaning you could probably stand in the middle of a group and wait the 8 seconds to get put back into Hide, and pull off another AS. Might require less depending on your secondary. I realize it's not exactly feasible to keep that many specific inspirations in reserve at all times, but not getting hit can make a world of difference, especially if you utilize the terrorize component of AS as well.
Only been playing a little over a month, trying my hand at a stalker before Issue 22 brings everyone back to the AT.
I've been wondering - is there any way to shake enemies once they've noticed me? My math indicates that having up Super Speed with a Stealth IO in it makes me effectively invisible to everyone but Snipers in times when I'm not "Hidden", but that doesn't shake the mobs I pick up from dropping a guy with Assassin Strike. What will? Running away (and hopefully having the Super Speed/Stealth combo keep me from making new friends)? Hitting them with a control effect and THEN running away? Or do I just have to kill everyone who notices me?
And I assume that on the odd mission with magic homing enemies, they cannot be stopped short of killing them.
